CHAIRMAN’S REPORTCHAIRMAN’S REPORT It was wonderful to see so many boats and crews around the Club for the Great Southern Regatta. With visitors from the RSAYS and PASC this regatta was well attended and from all reports, enjoyed on water. Well done to Jess Hargreaves who, despite the challenges of a software glitch during the results process, managed this regatta very well. Well done also to Race Officer John Gibson and of course our invaluable on-water duty crew volunteers.
Our second Phil Hoffmann Twilight series has concluded and we thank our excellent sponsors, Phil Hoffmann Travel and Yalumba Wines for their generous support once again. Greg Manuel and his crew on That’s Life finished top of the list in Cruising Division A and avid competitor Adrian Wotton received reward for his efforts with a series win in Cruising Division B.
It seems that our Ladies Helm twilights are proving to be a great success. The Chairman’s Cup is a trophy which can be awarded for any race at the discretion of the current REX Chair. In the spirit of balancing the scales I decided to make it the prize for the most recent Ladies Helm Twilight and warmly congratulate Tracey Pegler on a fine win.
The end of each racing season is the time for reflection. The Racing Executive is a committee which makes decisions based on available information and feedback from members. Mostly we apply a democratic approach when it comes to decision-making but we cannot make the best possible choices without your help. Shortly all skippers will receive a survey from REX. We strongly encourage every skipper to consult with their crew to provide feedback on the past season and make suggestions for the next. It is next-to-impossible to please everyone but the weight of numbers will certainly help to ensure that the majority of members’ wishes are catered for in the 2012/13 season.
Presentation night is just around the corner so book your crew tables now, I look forward to seeing you all there !

The SA IRC Championships have now concluded for Season 2011/12 - we had a record fleet of 13 contesting this series (7 from CYCSA and 6 from RSAYS) . With the addition of a few more yachts to the IRC fleet, next season looks very promising!
This season we also ran the SA IRC Division 2 Championships. The fleet of 7 boats (4 from PASC, 2 from RSAYS and 1 from CYCSA) keenly contested this series with the final result not know until after the final race - even then the winner won on countback!

The 2012 J24 Australian Championships were held at the CYCSA over the Adelaide Cup long weekend (10-12 March 2012). The Club hosted 10 interstate boats (from Victoria and NSW), as well as one entrant from Port Adelaide Sailing Club, and 4 home club entries: Good Company, Vertigo, Such is Life, and JJF.
DOWNWINDDOWNWIND 2012 J24 AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The weather Gods were smiling on us for the regatta, aside from
a few later than expected starts while waiting for the afternoon
sea breezes to pick up. Each day was sunny, with superb sailing
conditions. The scheduled 4 races were all sailed on Day 1 (4-9
knts), as were the 4 on Day 2 (10-12 knts), while on Day 3 (7-10
knts) the final 2 races of the series were run. The racing was keen
and extremely competitive for the fifteen boats that showed up
to establish the top J24 teams in Australia.
In a nail biting finish that went down to the last
race finish positions, Dave Suda and his crew on
PACEMAKER won the 2012 J24 Australian
Championships by one point - with Ben Lamb
(sailing Alyn Stevenson’s FUN 2) coming in second
and last year’s winner Sean Kirkjian sailing SAILPAC
coming in third place.
In PHS the winner was our very own Jamie Goode and the
crew on VERTIGO, in second place was Peter Stevens (CODE
VIOLATION), and OD winner Dave Suda (PACEMAKER)
coming in third place. It is customary within the J24s that the
PHS placing can’t be won by OD place getters, so third on PHS
went to Melbourne sailor Hugo Ottoway (BRUSCHETTA VI). OD WINNERS ‘PACEMAKER’

Following on from the record number of entries in the Premiers Cup Regatta, we once again had excellent interest, and a record number of Keelboat entries, which was boosted by the continued support of the PASC (providing 11 of the total 36 entries / RSAYS 5 / CYCSA 20).
On the Thursday afternoon prior to the Regatta the weather forecast looked OK for the Saturday, with winds around 10knts, however Sunday was shaping up to be a potential disaster with winds 0-3knts all day. Luckily, the wind gods helped us out and we had enough breeze for the RO to run 2 W/L races on Saturday and a longer course on Sunday with all boats finishing within the time limits.
RACE 1: The start of Race 1 on Saturday was delayed due to a 20 degree shift just before the warning signal. The new course for Div 1 was 2 x laps 1.6 miles 230 degrees /Div 2 and J24 was 2 laps x 1.2 miles 230 degrees, with the wind speed around 7 knts. Clear start - just after rounding the windward mark the wind increased to 10/12knts and shifted to SSW, causing the RO to move the windward mark to 200 degrees for the 2nd beat. This was a good move as the breeze stayed in that direction for the rest of the afternoon. Excellent racing with the first 11 Div 1 boats finishing within 4 minutes on PHS. Div 2 had 8 in 5 mins, and although only 3 J24 started they were within 30 secs.
RACE 2: Race 2 had similar courses for all divisions, with the wind speed around 10/12knts, 200 degrees. It was another very close race result: the first 10 Div 1 boats in 5mins / first 10 Div 2 in 7 mins. The only real drama in this race was on the start line when Kaesler and Alliance had solid contact resulting in a crew member from Alliance having his leg injured. After the protest hearing Kaesler was a DSQ.
RACE 3: Race 3 was a long Race on the Sunday, and as expected 0-3 knts greeted the yachts at 1130. Luckily the breeze increased to approx 5/7knts from the west just prior to the midday start and gradually built up during the race to 8/11knts. The RO set a good course for the conditions with plenty of opportunities to shorten course if required. The first mark was a gate off Point Malcolm (about 60/70 degrees) - perfect for code zero if you have one. From there it was to a mark off Escort House (assy), then to the Wreck Buoy (60/70degrees), then to the finish dead downwind.
Div 1, 2 & J24 completed the course in 1 and a half to 2 hrs, whilst Div 3 finished in 2 to 2 and a half hours. It was a sunny day, with very pleasant sailing conditions. The results were very close, with the first 12 in Div 1 finishing within 5 mins on PHS, the whole Div 2 fleet of 14 finished in 6.5mins, the J24s were within 1 min and Div 3 all within 14 mins.
A very successful regatta with great atmosphere. William StrangwaysWilliam Strangways

The last offshore race was vitally important as Asylum was sitting second in PHS on eleven points equal with Two True who were winning on count back. We were also third in the IRC division behind Secret Mens Business, again on equal points. SMB chose not to race giving us second for the series in IRC.
Now we come to the race itself. We were thankful that the REX committee set a course appropriate to the light conditions: Start -Glenelg - Orontes Beacon - Finish. A longer race might have taken all weekend.
Our crew for the race consisted of owner Derek Morrison, Steve, Paul, Dianne, Tony, Mike, myself and guest helmsman from Two True Rob Human. The challenge for us was to win outright as usual but to be in front of or very close to Two True at the finish so as to be ahead on handicap, allowing us to be one point ahead in the series.
The start at 1300 was a tricky affair being a rare spinnaker start as we had a northerly breeze and the first leg south to Glenelg. In addition Tony had not been on the bow before although he has had years of experience in dinghies. He did a great job all day. We set the masthead kite and held it all the way to the breakwater at Glenelg. Asylum made great speed on this leg, being the first yacht (I believe) to gybe off of Henley in 11-12 knots of breeze. Asylum was first to reach the Glenelg break water turning mark at around 1450 after an intense dual along the coast.
Two True, like the great competitors they are, were right on our tail and only a few more boat lengths to Aikin and Vulcan from the Squadron.
On the second leg we were confronted with a lack of breeze which dropped out altogether at times. We pushed west with our code zero, like Kamikaze pilots, into dead pockets of no wind, covering Two True in search of more wind. After an amazing sunset it became difficult to keep track of the surrounding yachts. We ate our customary dinner of curry and drank teas and coffees. The early favourable tide was on the turn making our slow approach to Orontes all the more difficult. Many yachts had taken a northerly course and found more wind than us and reached Orontes just before we did at midnight.
Thankfully a really solid wind from the north to north east set in on the last leg. We were able to fly our code zero again and steered higher than the fleet across The Gulf to the finish. Mike navigated us to the finish line and recorded the time at the line of 3.01.56 secs Sunday morning (from memory). Dianne informed race control of our finish as we celebrated on the way in to the CYCSA. A 60 mile race in 14 hours, works out to an average speed of just over 4 knots. We did finish up third on PHS in front of Two True fourth. In Derek’s words – mission accomplished.
The end result of approx 14 hrs of frustrating sailing resulted in Asylum taking first place in the Offshore PHS series & second in the Offshore IRC series 2011/12 . We are very happy with that.
