Dr. James Andrews courted by investors for surgical

    project in China

Renowned orthopedic and sports medicine surgeon Dr. James Andrews and other

members of his staff could soon be flying to China to operate on new

international patients, according to an administrator at the firm.

Andrews and other physicians at Andrews Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Centers have

performed surgical procedures in Europe, the Middle East and South America for

the past 25 years '" leaving their Birmingham-based practice on an as-needed

basis, said Andrews Center administrator Michael Immel.

Immel said a group of American and Chinese investors are currently constructing

surgery centers in China and are courting Andrews, his partners and his staff to

    perform surgeries there.

"Once the situation solidifies in China, there is a possibility we would be

doing something on a regular basis there," he said. "We're very fortunate that

people are interested in the kind of care we give."

The developing business agreement has been in the works for roughly a year and

has a few hurdles, including completed construction of the surgery center,

selection of physicians to perform the surgeries and learning how business is

conducted in this new market, Immel said.

"It's a very difficult market to get involved with because of how different

business is conducted there compared to here," he said.

The desire for American doctors is high internationally, especially in

orthopedics, Immel said. He said while there is a large market of more than a

billion residents in China, the per capita income is lower and health care may

be too expensive for many prospective patients.

"There are more and more expatriates in China who are looking for care and are

looking for high-quality orthopedic care," he said. "I think foreigners still

see America as one of the best places to get health care. In some countries,

patients sometimes have to wait for something like a total joint replacement

    surgery for an extended period."

Mike Morissey, director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Lister Hill

Center for Health Policy, said the traveling surgeons will most likely serve

    American and European patients.

"It's an increasing trend of medical tourism," he said. "There are a number of

clinics in India and Africa invested in this, and people fly to those locations

and are put up in nice facilities to get high levels of care and spend a

pittance of what they would pay here in America."

Andrews is already well known as an orthopedic surgeon of professional athletes

such as Brett Favre, Troy Aikman, Charles Barkley, Roger Clemens, Allen Iverson,

Bo Jackson, Michael Jordan, Jack Nicklaus, Emmitt Smith and John Smoltz. But

Morissey said expanded international surgery will add to his credentials. He

said the high level of orthopedic care and surgery located in Birmingham also

boosts the city's visibility as a destination for those needing care.

"It's a very small percentage of surgeons who get to do these procedures," hesaid. "But this could be the first step for something more dramatic down the

road where you have an internationally known surgical team that could expand

into medical tourism directly or to provide services throughout Asia."

Andrews operates at locations in Birmingham and Pensacola, Fla. Immel said

future locations for Andrews surgery centers are being explored in Texas and

    West Virginia.
