General Session I: Passing of the Gavel & Keynote Speaker OUTGOING CHAIRMAN: John J. Keating INCOMING CHAIRMAN: William C. Ensor III KEYNOTE SPEAKER: James Bradley, “Achieving the Impossible”

The author of the New York Times bestselling book Flags of Our Fathers, James Bradley’s writing captures the story of the six young men (one of them being his father) responsible for raising the flag on Iwo Jima during WWII, which became the most reproduced photo in American history. An inspirational storyteller, Bradley shares the story of these young men and how they came to embody the power of “doing the impossible.” Reflecting on his own victories, along with the lives of these five marines and one sailor, Bradley inspires us all to overcome the “impossibles” in our life by seeking out challenges, staying committed, and remaining focused.

Engineering OPTIMIZING PAVEMENT DESIGN The industry faces multiple challenges regarding how specifiers decide what sorts of pavements should be used. This session covers pavement design and pavement type selection topics with an emphasis on MEPDG and Perpetual Pavement. A major Pavement Economics Committee-funded project is examining these issues. Attendees will learn the issues involved, as well as the status of the project. ACCELERATING PROJECT DELIVERY IN URBAN AREAS Asphalt can get work zones cleared and traffic flowing again much more quickly than other paving options. This session highlights projects that used asphalt in high traffic areas to speed up construction and build long-lasting pavements while minimizing user delays. Projects on I-66 in Virginia and the New Jersey Turnpike will be highlighted.

PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS MAP-21 mandates that the U.S. Department of Transportation develop a method for measuring pavement conditions on the Interstate Highway System. Why is this important for asphalt contractors and what impacts could this have on future highway funding for states? This session will update attendees on the rulemaking, what the state reaction has been, and how performance-based outcomes are the wave of the future.

MarketingPAVEMENT PRESERVATION MARKETING PLAN The Pavement Economics Committee has underwritten a new marketing plan to capture market share in the pavement preservation sector with thin asphalt overlays. What is the plan and what role will contractors and state asphalt pavement associations play in achieving this sustainable objective? This session will highlight the branding and engineering behind Thinlay pavement treatments.

Environmental SustainabilityPAVEMENT IMPACTS ON FUEL ECONOMY The effect pavement performance characteristics have on vehicle fuel economy is gaining increasing scrutiny. This session highlights recent research funded by the Pavement Economics Committee to examine the connections between pavement-vehicle interaction and fuel economy, including a critical review of the Concrete Sustainability Hub’s rigid pavement theoretical model and a look at the real-world data on pavement roughness as tracked in the federal long-term pavement performance (LTPP) program.

SUSTAINABLE UPGRADES THAT PROVIDE ROISustainability involves adapting operations to improve both economic and environmental outcomes. This session looks at examples of sustainable upgrades to business assets and operations, such as the use of cost-efficient compressed natural gas to retool a facility and trucking assets. Discover how sustainable facility modernization can provide a significant return on investment even with a relatively small capital expenditure budget.

BusinessOPTIMIZING TECHNOLOGY IN ASPHALT COMPANIES Asphalt companies have embraced revolutions in technologies to increase operational efficiencies and save money. This session will explore the use of paperless technologies, GPS, and the Cloud to be more efficient, productive, and to strengthen the bottom line. WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT An aging workforce and uncertain market have made it very difficult for asphalt contractors to hire and retain a skilled workforce. This session will explore the steps companies are taking to manage their workforce and prepare for the future.
