FIRST DAY SHOCKS

As we step into the college on our first

day, no matter in what year you are, you

will be receiving a warm welcome from

a stranger or a group of strangers telling

you their names and ballot numbers

and that might leave you perplexed;

what was it all about? Actually those

people are candidates contesting

DUSU elections and the welcome was

to make sure you vote for them. And

surprisingly most of our freshers are

often clueless about how the the whole

algorithm of DUSU elections works. It is

not like other local election, there are a

lot of differences that we can go on

ranting out here but lets keep that out as

we are discussing the insights here.

WHAT DUSU IS?

To q u o t e W i k i p e d i a h e r e

“The Delhi University Students

Union, generally abbreviated as

DUSU, is the umbrella student

organization at the University of Delhi.

DUSU is the representative body of

students from most Delhi University

C o l l e g e s a n d

body of students from most Delhi

University Colleges and Faculties.

Each college also has its own students

union to which elections are held every

year. Student elections are keenly

contested. Several of the office bearers

of DUSU have gone on to hold public

office at the State and Centre level.

DUSU elections are considered the

most high profile student union

elections in the country as they provide

an opportunity to enter directly into local

and national politics. Arun Jaitely,

current finance minister, was a member

The University of Delhi has a long

history of student political activity.

The elections to Delhi University

Students Union, formerly indirect

through the electoral votes of college

Councillors,are now held by direct

voting by the students of the university

and constituent colleges. The elections

are usually held in August–September

of each year.”

THE ELECTIONS

Every year around 5-6 major political

parties including NSUI (Mentored by

INC), ABVP (Mentored by RSS) and

AISA contest for the post of

Pres iden t , Vice -Pres iden t ,

Secretary and Joint Secretary.

Apart from DUSU elections you will

President, vice-president

and Secretary, and two Central

Councillors, who will be taking

care of the students affairs at the

college level. DUSU panel looks

after the overall student rights

phenomenon at university level

and the college panel would take

care of fests and other activities in

your college. It is an amazing

platform that comes as a luxury for

DU students who want to pursue

local politics as a career.

DUSU PERKS

The fun part here for all of us is that

the contestants would do all the tic-

tack tricks to lure you into voting for

them, you will be offered free movie

tickets, picnics, rides, booze and

what not? you might even go

bonkers about the choices that will

be offered to you in exchange of

votes. Most of us would obviously

flush away or morals and dive into

the perks offered. You would also get astonished

seeing flyers and posters decorating the whole city,

which would be a little more than the usual election

campaigning mess (Not a pleasant sight for Eco-

friendly guys out there)

THE CHAOS

There will be cars roaring around the colleges and

campuses with the advertisements stuck on them,

rickshaw-wallahs, auto-wallahs and all those daily

“wallahs” would seem as if they are parroting the

name of a contestant. strange part is there is less of

promises or debates but there will be names and just

names everywhere. Beware you might get one

pasted on your face, it is highly recommended to not

to indulge into any feud leading to some legal action

against you. Despite of all hooliganism, money-

muscle showdown and littering, the atmosphere is

one of its own kind. You might not find the similar

conditions anywhere else in the country, anyway

DUSU elections are one of the most anticipated

students’ union elections of the country.

It would be a great treat to enjoy yourselves with all

those perks and handsome offerings but it is always

advised to vote for the right candidate. Everything

has been seen and done as now the elections are

over and no more of excitement. Life is back to the

boring normal days of studies and there will not be

interruptions of campaigners in the ongoing boring

classes.

Students on INDEFINITE DHARNA for Rent Control

Delhi University as a premier

institution of the country attracts

thousands of students from all over

India. But the problem here is that

Delhi University and its constituent

colleges do not have adequate

facilities to accommodate all of the

outstation students, till now only

fourteen DU colleges provide hostel

facilities to their students. This

causes students to look for

accommodation in private PGs and

Rooms. The private accommodation

sector has now emerged as a big

business, room rents have gone up

by almost 500% in the span of last

five years, one of our correspondents

said that in her PG there are around 9

rooms and out of which the owner

has the annual turnover of more than

15 lacs. In these times of hardships of

living we must not forget that large

number of people in India cannot

afford paying around 8000 as rent

and this yields into difficulty for outstation

students to be able to survive in Delhi.

Students who are facing these struggles

have gathered for an Indefinite Dharna

at Art Faculty gate under the banner of

Delhi Room Rent Control Movement. thThey have been on dharna since 20

August. According to information

provided by the students there is no legal

sanction and no effort from the

administration to regulate the rent

increment. They have told that the

students, who have come from remote

places in India, are living in a grossly

disturbing condition. The lack of

hostel facilities has given a chance

demanded the implementation of

section 33 of Delhi University Act-

1922, in Delhi University(which

university). Their other demands

include implementation of Delhi

Rent Control Act, Roll Back of

CBCS, No Profit- No Loss

Canteen/Mess, 24x7 Library (Fully

students. We are yet to hear from

the administration.

On 19th August E & Y selected 36 students as assurance associate in campus placement of Shaheed Bhagat Singh college morning. And on

th20 August Bajaj Capital visited at SBSC (M) for campus placement. Apart from that 27 students were also selected by E & Y in Delhi College of Arts and Commerce on 14th of august.

New Principal at Hans Raj

Dr. Rama has now become the new principal of Hans Raj College. Her taking over of the post according to students is too visible on ground as there are a variety of signboards put up in the college for preaching students. And the heritage of the college called 'Lovers Point' or LP in short is to be renamed as 'Chhatra Kendra'. Lover's Point was rumoured to be the place where the famous alumni of the college Shahrukh Khan proposed Gauri Khan. This step is not at all welcomed by the students and they have decided to still call it Lovers Point. And also there are rumours that soon wearing shorts would be banned in the college. All these steps smell of propaganda from the side of college administration. The sudden shift of power has become a bad news for the students.

New Societies at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Evening College

This year various new societies were formed in Shaheed Bhagat Singh (E) College. Women Development Cell (WDC), the WOW society and the ACE Society being one of them. The ACE Society - The ACE Society of our college basically deals in the terrain of "How to be a good communicator". Its primary function is to focus on the threesubstratum of an individual that would make him/her eligible enough to cast a staunched impression on the interviewer/employer. The society was successfully inaugurated on 18th August 2015, by Mr. Kapil Nayar, co-founder of International Business Advisors, a boutique consultancy firm. He is also an alumni of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College; Ms. Vaishali Chakravarty, one of the leading theatre practitioners in Delhi and a member of Actor Factor Theatre Co. , 'Associate of Trinity College London-Diploma with Distinction' and Mr. Neeraj Yadav, audio-visual voice artist and a freelance actor for boosting confidence and skills of communication among the students. Also on 11th August 2015, The WDC was successfully inaugurated in the college campus so as to motivate its students to be a part of the social cause and the cause of others.

Sanskrit Week at Kalindi College

Sanskrit week (28 Aug-3 Sep) was celebrated in Kalindi College on 31st of August. Indian classical dance performances by students and Qawwali was the main attraction. It’s aim was to give Sanskrit it’s honor. It was organized by Delhi university.

BulletNews

All the peace lovers and noise haters must know that if you wish to

stay away from the hustle and bustle of big cities Swami

Shraddhanand College welcomes you with an ornamental fountain

that would force you to brew a smile on your face. It has huge lush

green lawns which would be a pleasant treat to your mood. The

college library is one of the assets that the college boasts of. NCC

of the college has its three wings-Army, Navy and Air force all of

which are very active. One could be pleasantly surprised to see the

unconventional games like Kho-Kho, Kabaddi etc. being played in

the huge playground of the college. Breaking off the myth- only

campus colleges are enriched with ultra-modern facilities, it stands

with pride and honor reflecting the efforts of its students and staff.

Therefore the college in no respect lags behind in terms of general

standards of other 'popular' colleges and is capable of giving a

perfectly crafted college life to every student.

The solitude that I enjoyed here was an important asset that a

student must experience. I was away from any kind of college

gossips, rivalry, baseless branding and the friendly administration

was cherry on the top. It all gives me more time to focus on my

studies and my vision rather than wasting my life thinking about

what the students of 'college across the road' might think about me.

I was full of anxiety when I came into the college due to all those

stereotypes about the college that some of my friends warned me

about. But to my surprise it did not take me long to realize the

shallowness of those general perceptions about the college and

also the thinness of the pride of all those over-hyped colleges. The

college has been existing since 1967 and is located in Alipur area of

North West Delhi. The college was named after great social

reformer and freedom fighter Swami Shraddhanand.

So if you think that all we do in our college is studying and nothing

else then let's face it! The college is also a hub of popular and some

distinct cultural activities for example it has an Agrochemical

society, Audio-visual society, Planning forum, Sanskrit Parishad,

UN Association etc. It is also one of the very few colleges which have

Human Rights Club and where students work for the rights of

women. The career placement cell helps students to achieve their

dreams in the best way possible. Students of the college are

regularly seen buzzing around the 'Burger Box', famous for its extra-

soft burger buns, which happen to be located just in front of the main

entrance. Apart from this, the college canteen attracts bread-pakora

lovers and offers toothsome deserts, and of course the universal

favorites like tea and coffee.

Debunking Off-Campus StigmaBy Shruti Mehra

A freshly school pass-out will definitely

relate to it. From preparing for our board

exams to waiting for it's results to giving

entrance exams for further admissions,

our main aim is to get admission in a

reputed col lege. Students often

compromise with their courses over their

dream college. But do we ever wonder

why we all fascinate about the on-

campus, renowned colleges? Just

because they're the 'brand' ? The majority

of students run after getting themselves

ingress in these colleges without

considering the perks and essence of the

off- campus colleges. Below are some of

the reasons that will make you think twice

before finalising your college choices ;)

Let's take a look!

Alma- Matters

From the first women speaker of Lok

Sabha, Meira Kumar (Indraprastha

College) to the famous activist Aruna Roy

(Indraprastha College) to 'The Student of

the Year' Siddharth Malhotra (Shaheed

Bhagat Singh College) to Miss India, 2015

Aditi Arya (College of Business Studies)to

Koyal Rana (Deen Dayal Upadhyaya

College), who represent India in Miss

World pageant, off -campus colleges too

have a larger pool of talent. Be it

Bollywood, Politics, Sports or Glamour

world, our not-so-famous colleges make

DU proud with their gifted alumnus.

Larger pool of opportunities

Call it myth or rumour; it's nothing like

those on-campus colleges will provide

you more opportunities. If I comment

practically then off-campus colleges will

help you grow individually. You will get to

learn things from the grassroots level and

your inputs will be welcome with open

arms. Talk about internships or part time

jobs; you'll never take a step back from

learning. Off-campus colleges keep you

g r o u n d e d . Yo u f i n d y o u r o w n

opportunities and grab them accordingly.

Faculty

No doubt on-campus colleges are the

'Brand', but off-campus colleges are the

home for knowledge. Faculty are the one

strong point of studying off-campus. If you

really want to learn in a true sense rather

than just relying on the name of your

college then go for off-campus colleges.

Your professors will leave no stone

unturned to provide you as much

knowledge as they can. And apparently,

you will develop an urge for learning.

Variety of courses

Bhaskaracharya College for Applied

Sciences offers a specialised course in

Instruments, also Lady Irwin College and

Institute of Home Economics offers

undergraduate degree in Home Sciences,

the above colleges are the only ones those

are offering these specialised courses.

Recently, Kalindi College has introduced

its diploma course in Photography and

Videography, which can pursue by any

one irrespective of their courses.

Just by scoring 99% in your boards or

getting admission in a top college doesn't

make you who you are. You are the one

who make your college famous; your

college doesn't makes you famous.

Lastly I would say, “college famous ho ya

na ho students famous hone chahiye"

*wink*.

College Anxiety? It’s all in Your Mind!

By Shivani Ramachandran

It's in the Mind!

The beginning of a new

academic year always comes

wi th a dab o f anx ie ty,

excitement, euphoria and

uncertainty. As it is rightly said

-' We suffer more in our

imagination than in reality.'

Well, it is human nature to

fabricate the reality and cook

up delusions; thinking of which-

make us squirm in our seats.

By now I think you would have

got a hint of what I am implying

on- 'It's all about the mind-set!'

If you find yourself in paradise it

wouldn't be long before your

mind says “Yes, But….” All

problems, anxiet ies are

illusions of the mind. It's all

about realizing that there are

no problems. There are only

situations to be dealt with now

or to be left alone and

accepted.

In the purview of college life it is

an open avenue where you

would experience a new influx

of people into your lives,

different ideologies, probably a

new place to stay etc. All of

these changes and the tinge of

new found freedom which

e v e r y c o l l e g e s t u d e n t

experiences, might sometimes

trigger restlessness and

apprehension.

There are some indispensable

strategies you can employ to

develop a healthy mindset. To

begin with acknowledge that

change is possible. The mind

has the capacity to unlearn and

relearn. Often take control of

the situation and don't allow

yourself to believe that the

power lies with someone else.

Turn it around and you will see

yourself in control. You must be

authentic in what you are

doing. Always be yourself!

When you are being yourself

your energy and enthusiasm

will be felt by everyone. And it is

a lways important to be

confident about what you have

t o o f f e r . T h e i m p l i c i t

understanding is that it is up to

you to have the confidence to

portray your value. All it takes is

a positive attitude and a

healthy mindset to make the

possib i l i t ies of success

limitless.

For the bookworms! Here are

some suggested books, which

can be your companion when

you experience one of those

times where you are fighting

with yourself!

The Power of Now Eckhart

Tolle

 The Intention Experiment

Lynee Mc Taggart

 Reality at Dawn Ram

Chandra

On a personal note, I feel the

mentioned books can be used

as a self guide. The words on

the pages of such books

a p p e a r r e a l l y t u e a n d

convincing when we are in a

stale mindset and immediately

triggers a new spark and

avenue of optimistic thought.

As Tim Shriver' puts it- rising

tide lifts all boats. It' not just the

kids with problems, but all kids

who can benefit from these

skills these are an inoculation

for life.

All the best DUites!

Help Him Help Himself:

A humanitarian initiative

We argue with a rickshaw puller for ten

bucks and at the same time we do not

hesitate shelling out a large chunk of our

pocket money to shop at expensive shops

and to eat at heavily overcharging

restaurants for the sake of our brand

consciousness, and then we talk about

tradition, freedom, rights and morality etc.

Hypocrisy is trending dude! Not on twitter

but in real life.

There is a poor man who sits around the

Vishwavidyalaya metro station with a

weighing machine with a gleam in his

eyes that begs hopes for bread before he

bids farewell to the sun. Some of the Delhi

University students have come up with an

initiative to help this poor man who rises

up everyday before most of us in search

of bread. 'Help Him Help Himself' is a

Facebook page started by some students

in order to make people aware of the

hardships that this man undertakes and at

the same time requesting people to help

this man.

Quoting the info section of the page:

“The man with the weighing machine near

the vishwavidyala metro station. Help his

business and help him live an honest and

dignified life. This man sits near the metro

station. As you cross the food van and the

rickshaws, turn right towards the metro

station and keep walking, you'll spot him

in front of two food shops, sitting with a

weighing machine. His sole income is that

weighing machine and he charges Rs 3

per weighing. Last I checked, this man

earns approximately Rs 30-40 a day. He

also wants to earn honestly and live a

dignified life. This page is an earnest

request to help this man, check your

weight twice or thrice a week. I'm sure many

of us can afford to spare him Rs 6 to 9 a

week. Plus, it doesn't hurt to monitor your

weight now and then, and have a heart

attack at 50 instead of 30.”

This certainly gives us an Idea about what

the page is all about. It is basically a

humanitarian initiative to help a poor man

who is ready to do his bit. We keep on

criticizing system for the faults but here it's

our chance to look back for and clear the

stains of our own collars and ask what we

are doing to for the change that we wish to

see in it. We study poverty, we write papers

on poverty, we sympathise with poor people

but hypocrisy overrules us when it comes to

doing something about the poverty! So let's

pledge together and help this man earn his

wages.

The Social Disease of Slut Shaming By Anna George

Every press clipping of an

actress or model which would

violate the so called 'morality

and modesty' or let us use the

umbrella term, 'Sanksaar'

would be frowned upon by

people though cherished

secretly. On Facebook, these

photographs would fetch plenty

of lewd and vulgar comments

and ultimately it would the

woman's attitude and clothes

w h i c h ' p r o v o k e s ' t h e s e

comments and she is held

guilty. But I wonder if these

comments are the reasons why

even today there are women

refusing to come out with their

true stories of molestations and

rapes.

Maya Angelou is one of the

boldest modern American

writers. In her biography, I Know

Why the Caged Bird Sing she

explains her first rape. She was

eight years old and was living in

.

In a nation where two rapes occur every hour,

one can be rest assured that every time one

passes a lewd comment on Facebook, some

rape victim might read it. And you would be

burdening her with the guilt of being raped, of

having a body rather than supporting her. May

be it would more sensitive of people not to let

out frustrations behind the online masks and

accept it online and offline that rape is not the

victim's fault.

her maternal house with her grandmother

and uncles and it was a neighbour who

raped her. She did not know what

happened to her and when she explained it

to her family, it was their honour that was

compromised. The rapist got bailed in a

matter of days and her family exacted their

vengeance by killing him in public. But little

Maya Angelou felt it was her voice that killed the

person. And she refused to utter a word for long

three years. In spite of her family's support she felt

it was her fault. Daya Bai, a social worker in

Jharkand mentions that she burnt her breasts

after an attempted rape, because she felt it was

her body, her fault that caused the rape.

When TOI defended the infamous Deepika

cleavage controversy, they said in the open

that if Deepika has the right to wear the dress

they have every right to make that statement.

It was criticised for being sexist and

misogynist but is it not just another form of slut

shaming. When someone insists on not

wearing a skirt when it is dark, are we not

indirectly accepting that it was the dress that

invited the attack? When hostels put different

curfew timings for boys and girls are we not

seconding the MLSharma's statements?

Identifying a Chetan Bhagat Reader Chetan Bhagat has grown as a

sensation and has seeped deep

even into our bedrooms and

even taken his place near the

pillows. You will find Bhagat ji in

the Delhi Metro solving the

existential crisis in the hands of a

youngster trying to figure out life.

You will find Bhagat Ji in the

romantic shelves of the cheap-

side bookstores. Bhagat Ji has

found his way as a reading

alternative to Bollywood for

those who “enjoy reading”, but

not reading. So here I am going

to introduce you to some

foolproof CIA tested methods of

identifying a Chetan Bhagat fan

without loosing your swag.

Chetan Bhagat! Chetan

Bhagat! Everywhere! Thats

what it would be like if you take a

CB reader to a bookstall (if you

have the endurance), you will

find them staring at Bhagatji's

books. Other authors may as

well be dead (some of them

actually are). And every other book will face a

severe visibility crisis no matter who wrote it

and how much loved it has been, it’s CB

swag! you know. Dan Brown, J.K. Rowling or

even Amitav Ghosh will also need to

reconsider their merit at such times.

Stereotypes Alert! Would be the alarm that

would ring around them – Bhagatji's subjects

are prone to some real lowlife and ridiculous

stereotypes (which may or may not come

from the books themselves, but yeah let us

assume because we are reading something

not so pro Chetan Bhagat). They will

introduce you to some life saving stereotypes

related to a huge variety of general interests,

related to class, gender, region, religion and

what not. “The purpose of life for an engineer is to

either make a flying-bot or get placed, and apart from

this, sex is the only thing that revolves around the mind

of an engineering student from a rural area”. Dial it

down a notch maybe?

Cocoon, Shell, Snail all these words would pop up

when you think of them. You will find it hard to come

across a CB reader who has the guts to face what the

(ignorant) world insists on calling literature. They

stereotype “Bhagat brand” books as great and all the

“other stuff” as boring old literature without even

looking at it. Queer.

English Vinglish who cares about that? As meaning

(well sometimes there is) and words are not in

agreement with each other, you will find the readers

following this trend in their lives too. Many of my friends

read those novels to learn English (the horror). No

further comments.

say hallucinations and they call it cool. A reader of the

Lord might give you lessons on conservatism since that

is the only good left in the world. His novels are like a

constant reminder that conservatism is the only thing

which can save the world from an apocalypse. So let's

just go decades back to breathe the freshness of the

society.

WTF NEWS:: A Cockroach died at Hansraj College

A cockroach recently was

trampled to death by a canteen

worker in the Hans Raj College

canteen premises. Though the

involvement in the alleged killing

there were witnesses who

professed the crime. As per

sources, the cockroach was

dead. This news of bloodshed in

the campus has created havoc

among the students and the

whole cockroach community.

According to our sources the

cockroaches along with the

students were on a protest rally

Sharma ji, 'naam to suna hi hoga'

yeah the same pados wale Sharma

Ji, well guys he is a perfect husband,

father and a vibrant society member

and most importantly he is a 'caring'

neighbour (pun intended) for

Sharma Ji others' business is his

own. He has the ideal family

including his son, daughter and his

wife.

His wife has a lovely personality, she

is a gossip queen of the society and

a self proclaimed information centre

of the society's internal affairs. Apple

of her eyes is her daughter Pinky, if

we talk about the life of Pinky, she is

the most adorable creature on earth

as she is extremely 'sanskari' at the

unattainable levels of sanskriti. She

is pursuing BSc Home Science

Honours from IISB (Indian Institute

of Sanskari Bahu) She wears the

traditional salwar suit, neatly ironed thand carries the full swag of the 19

century India. Then next in line is our

desi kalakar, the adarsh son to every

Indian family “Sharma Ji ka beta” the

obvious IITian whose main ambition

in life is to study, study, study work (a

good job), and die. Though he is

repeating a year in college but who

cares, it's IIT. This was Sharma Ji's

sweet little family.

Isn't it weird reading a fifth grade

biography of somebody called

Sharma Ji? Well it is a common

character in all of our lives. You can

only not relate in case you live under

a rock. So here we have our dear

Sharma Ji at DU Times debunking

the common myths in our society

that we all come across. Read DU

Times to keep in touch with Sharma

Ji because if you don't then Sharma

Ji kya kahenge!

A Hosteller’s DiaryWanted to get inside of Hindu, Hansraj or

Stephens without getting into a mess with those

rude gatekeepers? Well, been there done that,

so here is the solution. Find a friend in the

college you want to enter and get their fee

receipt photocopied and trust me the guards will

always look for the layout of the receipt and will

not bother looking closely even for the sake of

reading your name unless and until you have

done something really creepy in front of them.

Just in case this doesn't work take name of any

teacher you know they will not bother stopping

you.

Free Food? Oh! Yes! You heard it right there is a

smartphone application called “Tiny Owl”

download it and on the first order you will get

150 bucks cash back and if you use the referral

code to have your friends download the app you

will get 150 in your online balance at tiny owl app

itself when they order which is equal to more

free food.

Who have lived a year or more as a hosteller in

DU would relate to this completely, and those

who have not should use these tips and tricks

for a better hostel life. There is a lot more to

come, stay tuned to DU Times, Hosteller's

Diary.

The very first thing that strikes in my mind is his distressed

dressing sense. As poor child never gets time out of books!

Hence he plays the odd not the men! I might even end up

imagining him in coming ten years as lab assistant, or maybe

some doing some mainstream job. It is hard to find someone

who did physics honors and invented something.

Sharon Singh,BA English Honours,Aryabhatta College

B.Sc Honours in Physics is a great course, but Indian students

are driven by the IIT/Engineer dreams of parents (and peer

pressure) and are forced to leave their interests. It's true about

all the courses not only Physics. Engineering Gives You Direct

Placement, B.Sc. Physics won't drop you anywhere! So

normal physics dude needs to work hard and like M.sc. would

be compulsory for at least getting placed as a lecturer, future of

a B.Sc. degree holder is not secured at all. So I would perceive

him/her to be someone with insecure future.

Rajiv Jain, B.com Honours, Bhim Rao Ambedkar College

The person pursuing B.Sc. Honours in physics must be

engrossed in books, mugging up all the formulas, having no

social life, but all of this at the cost of little exaggeration and

wrapped up in the packet of generalization.

Harshita Arora, BA Psychology Honours, KMV

well! "B.Sc. Physics Honors" you must be Sheldon

copper or something but frankly speaking none of

this makes sense, I mean so what if you are

pursuing "bsc physics honors" life is what you make

it and if you really want to achieve anything in life you

have to be serious in whatever field you go to , no

matter whether you are doing English honors or

Geography honors you got to do the hard work. Any

student pursuing honors in a science subject is seen

as somewhat typically of a studious one, but at the

same time, we can't neglect the efforts every course

requires to be put in.

Asma Zafar, BA English Honours, Shaheed

Bhagat Singh Evening College

Somehow people from science stream always freak me out

because of their being calculative and hard work needed in

those subjects. So if a person tells me that they are from

BSc. Physics Honors, I think of them to be sincere & no-

nonsense type. I also feel that people think students from

these streams are more intelligent that others. But most of

the time we students choose our subjects because of our

passion in those subjects & not intelligence level.

So finally you got into DU and yeah into a hostel

too. As dreamy as the university is, it comes

with its own set of expenses and memories,

most amazing of which are often very cheap

especially if you are a hosteller. From learning

how to club out to having the best restaurant at

your tips, one thing that you undoubtedly learn

indeed in your forever broke and lazy college

days is “jugaad”

A more experienced lot can maybe better

understand the midnight cravings of habitual

junk, but not anymore as you are in hostel/pg

right now and the doors will not be opened for

you at 1 am and food will not be allowed inside.

So here we will tell you what most genius minds

do to cope up with such a situation. Get a dead

beat basket or a packet tie it to a long enough

string and fling it out of the window to collect

your order. Isn't that easy? Yes it is indeed.

It is a birthday month and you've got loads of

friends? Hudson is the place where you would

love to be. Restaurants like Hudson Café and

Vintage Avenue will not only offer great food, but

are reasonable as well when it comes to your

pocket. Plus a bill over 500 INR while checking

into Hudson Café would earn you a free drink.

What would be the first thing into your mind when you meet a person and that person tells you that she/he is from B.Sc. Hons. Physics?

Bsc physics as in only degree is not enough post graduation

is a must otherwise you have lesser options for job which

isn't satisfying. So I would see the guy as future

unemployed struggling his way through the tantrums of

NET/JRF and long queue of job interviews.

Future of : Hindu CollegeThe Virgin Tree?By: Akshara Srivastava

The end of an era? Think of Hindu college and there

are a few things that would instantly come to your

mind. Among these things is the incredibly famed V

-tree.

Prayed to on Valentine's Day, this tree has been the

object of fancy of almost everyone in the campus.

For those who don't know the tale behind this tree

here is a rough idea- The students from the Hindu

hostel and subsequently the whole college pray at

the tree every year to a 'damdami mata' in hopes of

losing their virginity. Nothing short of a festival I tell

you! Now I don't know if the mata actually fulfills

their wishes but what's the harm in trying right?

In a completely unprecedented and shocking

move, the authorities at the college decided to cut

down the tree and close down PAM- Pizzas and

more. The cutting down of the V-tree was justified

by the purpose to facilitate the construction of a

new academic block and the girl's hostel.

Hearing this, the students launched protests

against the college authorities. The officials cut

down the six trees in the V-Tree area and were

allowed to cut down parts of the V-tree and in turn

were given a penalty of planting a hundred trees in

the college campus. If things could get any worse,

they did. The parts of V-Tree were cut down on a

Sunday to avoid any hassles of protests by the

students- nothing short of a betrayal.

According to sources recently the V-Tree has been grilled and hostel president has

warned the principal that students will break the grills and do their worshipping.

The Virgin Tree as on 14 February 2015.

Image Credits: Dharam Gupta, KMV, For DU Times

In conclusion the V-Tree stands, but it looks

like an ugly ostrich at the moment. It'll take

time for the heavy canopy to grow again.

Until then all we can do is pray for its quick

recovery.

A Piece of Prose Life in Verses

Ayan PalI believe in doing the 'write' thing... always!

Ayan Pal is an Electronics and Communications Engineer with over a decade of experience across IT majors CISCO, WIPRO, and IBM. He is also an author known for his acclaimed short stories in the Amazon Bestsellers ‘Chronicles of Urban Nomads’ and ‘21 Tales to Tell’. He has also contributed to India’s first composite novel – ‘Crossed and Knotted’, ‘Upper Cut’, ‘Her Story’, ‘Rudraaksha’, and ‘Long Story Short’ respectively. Based out of Kolkata, he is passionate about public speaking and leadership. He also loves reading, creative writing, and binge watching his favorite TV Shows. He is currently working on his debut novel.

“You could never impose yourself. You are truly weak.” said White, in the snappy fashion that he was notorious for. Light Yellow felt bad enough that he was the one feeling White's wrath today, but this last accusation felt most incredulous.“Huh. You are one to talk about imposing-““I have a job! I am the base! You exist because I am, so don't you even...”

The Monthly Conference of Colours had just ended and it had been nothing less than a nightmare for Light Yellow. A strict legislation had been passed that each colour must carry a title that best suited its ability or how it was globally perceived. Light Yellow had had the worst end of this deal.White now sounded more scornful than ever, “I mean, Baby Blue got a better title than you LY. What was it? Cute? Pfft. I would have died, make no mistake, but she seemed happy enough. But yours though, I must say, sounds oddly accurate.”That stung and LY visibly flinched. Light Yellow the Weak, he repeated in his mind, and a horrible sensation engulfed him. White was a member of the executive panel of the committee and had been allowed to choose his titles. White the Pure, the Peaceful, blah blah, thought LY, envious and disgusted. Any colour who knew White, and they all did, agreed that White was far from pure and the proposition of him being peaceful was laughable. LY had to protest.“It's so unfair. Something must be done. The others, they don't know me. How can they vote me as the Weak? I say they are weak!” said LY, close to tears now.White perceived a storm was brewing. One of his titles he had chosen was 'the Wise', and it was an opportune moment to show exactly why.“Really? Tell me, then, what should be done?”LY thought for a moment before replying, “I don't know. But someone must do something!”“And who should it be?” asked White, gradually moving towards his point.“Uh...someone in power, of course.” said LY in a matter-of-factly tone.“And what does that make you, LY?” asked White, knowing very well that no reply was forthcoming. LY was stumped, and as awareness dawned, he realised that he had been robbed of the power to retort, a power he never really possessed anyway.“You see,” White continued now as he wrapped up his paperwork and made his way out of the Conference Hall, “this makes you powerless, LY, hence your title. It's not your abilities that make you weak, it's your attitude. We all don't get superficial titles as the one gained by Baby Blue. More often than not, you have to earn your title and prove it to all who doubt you.“Gold is royal, Violet is pompous, your big brother, Yellow, he is brilliant, all for a reason. And I,” White gave a subtle smile, “I am pure, peaceful and wise in more ways than you can imagine. And LY, you now have the greatest gift of all, actually. You have a chance to prove all of us wrong, to do away with this tag of being weak, and earn a title that you desire. It all depends, as I said, on your attitude.”LY was dumbfounded. White the Wise had made sense, and once one cut through the verbiage, the message was crystal clear.White poked his head back into the room one last time, “Start today. One day, your big brother will be proud of you.”

Wielding Words

OctoberEdition www.storymirror.com

thSunday, 16 August, 2015 was a much awaited day for it was

supposed to be the first meetup for the StoryMirror community and

was aptly christened 'StoryMirror Square'. It was supposed to be the

day for the writers, thinkers and the creatives, contributing to the

meteoric rise of StoryMirror in the past few months to make their

presence felt, to speak their hearts out and touch a few others with

their words on the open mic. The venue was Kunzum Café, hidden in

the romantic bylanes of Hauz Khas Village.

The day started off with a bunch of our ever-enthusiastic friends

from DU dropping in, in small groups of 4-5. They were followed by

the writers and the poets, many of them already published in reputed

publications. The stage was well set with an amalgam of the pros and

the amateurs.

The event kicked off with the core team of StoryMirror

introducing itself and sharing the vision and idea behind the concept.

Each member of the team took turns in expressing their roles and

sharing how the love for the arts & literature drives them. The

StoryMirror team also urged the audience present to come forward

to join the cause and let their passion drive them through their career

paths.

Then it was the turn of the writers and dreamers to take over the

open mic, as one by one brilliant poets & writer came over to share

their creation with those present. Language proved to be no barrier

as people expressed their love in English as well as in Hindi and with

a couple of Shayars echoing the hall with their couplets dripping

with romanticism as well.

As poetry flowed, ghazals echoed, the mood in the hall was

permeated with love and longing, with passions unbridled, with

poetic dreams of an afternoon slumber coming to life. You could see

it in their eyes, you could see in their faces as those present sat silent,

enamored by the spirit of love, the spirit of StoryMirror, with serene

faces and an occasional smile dancing on their lips.

Mid-way through the event, with hearts full of poetry, empty

bellies rumbled but it had also been taken care of in advance by our

team, as coffee and cookies accompanied by bowls after bowls of

chips and snacks poured in, followed soon after by sumptuous rolls

and soft drinks. With hearts and bellies full, we sure were on our way

to making StoryMirror Square a fulfilling experience.

A huge success, as it was, StoryMirror Square One was just the start

together, the time we we spend on telling tales of yore. So if you're

already a part of the journey that StoryMirror Square is, we ask you

to look out for the next and if not, we have a caravan waiting for you.

Come join us on the next StoryMirror Square.

Strumming on his guitar, Girish sang songs on demand for the

His soulful rendition had the house swaying to his tunes and in no

time you could hear all present echoing after him. Music sure did
