Competition Obedience with the Companion Dog Sports Program (CDSP)

by Debbie Kaminski

The Companion Dog Sports Program (CDSP) is based out of New Jersey and has clubs in the Mid-Atlantic

region. I have been involved with CDSP obedience since 2011 and began serving as a Representative a

couple of years later. CDSP differs from traditional obedience venues in that you can reward your dog

with food at the end of every exercise at every level. The secret is to reward after the judge says “Exercise

Finished” and before you start moving to the next exercise. Food must be kept in your pocket and not in a

bait bag or other visible pouch. You can also praise your dog and give additional commands as outlined

in the rules and regulations. Another benefit is that you can continue to compete in certain levels and

earn higher titles within those levels. For instance, after your dog has earned the Novice title (CD-C) with

three scores of at least 170 or higher, you can continue to compete in the Novice C class for individual

class championship titles. Ten scores of 185 or higher are needed to earn championship titles.

In addition to the Novice, Open and Utility classes, you may enter a dog new to obedience in the Starter

Novice optional titling class. Both the Starter Novice and Novice classes are a great way to get a new dog

used to the whole ring experience. I view CDSP as a stepping stone between training/show n go’s and

AKC obedience trials.

For this article, I will focus on the Starter Novice and Novice classes.

The exercises in the Starter Novice class are as follows: On-Leash Heeling Pattern; On-Leash Figure 8; On-

Leash Stand with Distraction (the judge walks around the dog at a two-foot distance but does not touch

the dog as they would in the Novice class); Off-Leash Recall (half the ring distance and includes a front

and finish); Off-Leash Sit-Stay (half the ring distance). The Sit-Stay exercise is similar to the AKC Novice

“Get Your Leash” exercise. Handler leaves dog on a sit-stay and walks to the chair where the leash has

been placed and then proceeds to return to the dog and stand in heel position.

The exercises in the Novice class are as follows: On-Leash Heeling Pattern; Off-Leash Figure 8; Moving

Stand for Exam; Recall Over Bar Jump; Sit or Down Stay

Another interesting note about CDSP is that each class has components of the next highest level(s). For

instance, in Novice, the dog does a moving stand and does a recall over a bar jump (as in the Utility class)

and the off-leash figure 8 that is performed in the Open class. The moving stand is more like the signal

stand exercise in Utility than the actual moving stand exercise. You will heel forward and stand your dog

when instructed by the judge. You will remain standing in heel position until the judge instructs you to

leave your dog. The judge will then walk past your dog and lightly run their hand(s) across the side of the

dog’s body. Handler will then return to heel position. For the stay exercise, it can be either a sit or a

down, depending on the judge’s preference. The exercise is conducted similarly to the AKC Beginner

Novice stay exercise. Handler will leave the dog in the middle of the ring, walk away and turn left as they

proceed to walk around the inside perimeter of the ring. Upon return, the handler will remain standing

across from the dog at one end of the ring until the judge instructs them to return to their dog.

Look Out For These Diseases During The Dog Days of Summer

By: TherapyPet.org Ear Infections There is no doubt the summer season is full of environmental allergens, bugs, parasites, mites and whatnot. These

are all factors that can increase the risk of your dog getting a bad ear infection. As you take him on a walk on daily

basis, you don’t know that kind of bugs and mites that may jump onto his fur or land right in his ear. Look for these

symptoms of ear infection:

1. Ear odor

2. Head tilting or head shaking

3. Lack of balance

4. Excess scratching

5. Redness of the ear canal

6. Swelling of the outer ear

7. Yellow, brown, or bloody discharge

Dehydration Low water content in the body leads to dehydration. However, this problem can also be caused by excessive

vomiting, not eating enough food and water, high fever, and diarrhea. Keep in mind that dehydration is not as

harmless as it sounds and can prove to be fatal for your dog. Symptoms include:

1. Sunken eyes

2. Decrease in desire to eat food

3. Weight loss

4. Excess urination

5. Weakness

6. A dry mouth

Seasonal allergies Dogs may be allergic to a variety of seasonal items, such as grass, fleas, and several other plants, during summer.

You can tell if your dog is allergic by looking out for the following symptoms:

1. Constant itching

2. Allergic reactions like rashes and redness

3. Shedding coat

4. Excess sneezing

If you notice any of these signs, get in touch with your vet as soon as possible.

Worms Hookworms, tapeworms, roundworms, and whipworms are pretty common internal parasites in dogs. And even

though any worm infection can make your canine uncomfortable, some, such as hookworms, can even prove to be

fatal in younger dogs and puppies. If you notice any of these signs, seek medical help for your dog immediately.

1. Weight loss

2. Diarrhea (may be bloody)

3. A change in appetite.

4. A dry, coarse coat

5. Scooting on bottom

6. A general poor appearance

7. Vomiting (particularly true for roundworms)

Visiting your vet is the best thing to do here, but you can also include oral medicine as a follow-up. Don’t try to treat

him on your own unless you have comprehensive knowledge about the type of worm infestation in your dog.

Remember that a medication that kills tapeworms, for instance, does not kill roundworms.

Fleas It takes only three weeks for one flea to turn into a massive infestation of 1,000 bugs. Fleas are a pretty common

canine problem, but thankfully they are pretty easy to get rid of as well. Symptoms of fleas in your dog include:

1. Hair loss

2. Allergic response resulting from contact (known as allergic dermatitis)

3. Excessive licking, scratching, or biting at the skin

4. Tapeworms (they are usually transferred by fleas)

5. Flea dirt, which looks like tiny black dots on your dog’s skin

Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is an infectious condition, caused by germs. It is usually transferred by drinking lake, ditch, or puddle

water infected by urine from other infected wild animals. This might also contract via body tissues and can also

affect your dog if he comes into direct or indirect contact with another infected dog or cat. The problem may prove to

be fatal if not addressed right away. Symptoms include:

1. Body pain

2. High fever

3. Joint pain, weakness,

4. Vomiting

5. Discharge from eyes and nose

6. Diarrhea

Thinking of You Contact: The Sunshine Coordinator, Sharon Spies at [email protected]

Our sympathy to Melvin Knight on the loss of his brother

In Memory We recently received a donation of used agility equipment from Mr. James Mayes. A number of Oriole

members were able to receive some of this equipment for training. Mr Mayes told me that his wife, Gerry,

had been a Member and Trainer at Oriole a number of years ago, prior to her death in 2014. I thought it

would be nice to remember Gerry in this issue.

Frances G. 'Gerry' Mayes, dog trainer Frances G. "Gerry" Mayes, a dog trainer who also showed dogs, died Aug. 4, 2014 of cancer at her Essex home. She

was 71. The daughter of Alexander P. Studzinski, supervisor of Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s Penwood power plant, and

Frances R. Jednoralski Studzinski, a homemaker, Frances Geraldine Studzinski was born in Baltimore and raised in

Dundalk. After graduating in 1960 from Dundalk High School, she attended Baltimore Business College for a year

and then went to work as an accountant at the Monumental Life Insurance Co. She and James Mayes, her high

school sweetheart, married in 1961. She left the insurance company in 1964 to raise their son.

Mrs. Mayes began training and showing dogs in 1968 in the U.S. and Canada. During those years, she owned and

showed Pembroke Welsh corgis, Shelties, border collies and Papillon spaniels, which won many awards.

"She enjoyed dog obedience, confirmation and later the dog agility areas of dog competition," said her husband.

"Gerry started dog agility in 1998 and her dog earned many titles with numerous first places and also included a

Master Agility title." Mrs. Mayes became an obedience instructor for the Dog Owners Training Club of Maryland

during the 1970s, and later was elected to its board of directors. She became an agility instructor for the Catoctin

Kennel Club in 2001, and a few years later, for the Oriole Dog Training Club. Her expertise with animals extended to

the avian world: She had two parrots and two cockatoos that she trained.

Mrs. Mayes was also an accomplished ballroom dancer and dance instructor. She enjoyed dancing the polka hop, her

husband said. Mrs. Mayes enjoyed spending time at a second home that she and her husband owned in Ocean City.
