DUNDALK v GALWAY UNITED

KICK-OFF

WELCOME TO ORIEL PARK:THE HOME OF FOOTBALL04

Page 5: Dundalk v Galway United (Friday 24 June 2011)

The news that Dundalk FC will not beextending the squad in the July transferwindow is tough on Ian Foster who has hadabsolutely no luck with his injury ravagedsquad this season.Who knows where wemight be if the likes of Stephen Maher,Jason Byrne and Stephen McDonnell hadbeen available. The team have been heroicso far this year considering the fact that thelikes of Colin Hawkins, Dean Bennett,Nathan Murphy, KeithWard and GregBolger (and more) have put their bodieson the line and played with injury. It wasnoticeable against St Pats that both Deanand Colin were in extreme difficulty yetplayed on until the end. It’s admirablededication to “the cause” and I knowall Dundalk fans are appreciative of thesacrifices that the players have made thisseason.

While the decision not to spend money in thewindow is a pity, it is absolutely the correctdecision. It’s just far too dangerous to speculatefor success at this point. Dundalk fans arestruggling to keep up with the often incessantschedule that the FAI have demanded. As hasbeen said before, the decision to squash theLeague of Ireland season into such a tighttimeframe may keep players contracts shortbut also leads to a fixture list that many fans

05dduunnddaallkkffcc..ccoomm

have difficulty keeping up with. The away support at Oriel Park hasbeen mostly disappointing. In therecent Louth Derby, DroghedaUnited brought just 99 supportersup the M1. Who would have believed that we would just attract576 spectators to the Galway FAICup match a few weeks ago? And10% of those gate receipts went tothe FAI with a Galway entitled to40% of the balance. After match expenses Dundalk barely had anything left to put in the bank.

There is a tendency for people to switch offwhen the club makes statements relating to finance. But the fact is, we have a lot of things in our favour. In particular, Ian Foster has theteam playing attractive positive football. Football fans who know the game will appreciate what is on offer on a match night in Oriel. The club is a good place to be around and there is no air of panic or crisis. There is a lot of information in tonight’s magazine and on dundalkfc.com about different fundraisers such the Liverpool Legends match. These are absolutely crucial. But the simple fact is that the most importantfundraisers occur every second Friday night. If you are reading this it is likely that you area part of the club’s core support – we all needto reach out to the people who pick and choosetheir games or are liable to decide againstcoming up to Oriel Park on account of theweather or other small things. Some peoplejust need a push. We all know several peoplewho fit the bill – ring them, text them, tweetthem, do whatever we can to raise the priorityof matchnights in Oriel in people’s lives. Let’s not just accept these low crowds. The club deserves better!

KICK-OFFDUNDALK v GALWAY UNITED

GOOD EVENING and welcome to Oriel Park fortonight’s Airtricity League Premier Division gameversus Galway United. Firstly, I would like towelcome Seán Connor, his players and backroomstaff, the directors and supporters of GalwayUnited who have made the long trip east thisevening.

I’m putting these notes together before last Tuesday’strip to Shamrock Rovers. Going back to our last homegames against Drogheda United and Saint Patrick’sAthletic, the performance against the latter is what I’vecome to expect from our players. I think what wasrefreshing and reassuring was the fact that the fansstayed and clapped the players off the pitch becausethey could see the effort and the endeavour that theyhad put into the game. I think ultimately it was a gamewhere we were carrying both centre-halves; DeanBennett and Colin Hawkins had identical ankle injuries.

hurt Drogheda and that was disappointing. We didn’tplay with the urgency and the speed that we need to,to shift teams about and create chances. We got sloppyon the night but, like I said, we put in a better effortagainst St. Pat’s, and the lads will be aware that if theycome off it again tonight that Galway will no doubt geta result. We’re not good enough to pick and choosewhat games we’re going to perform in to get results;we have to be at our best every time we take to thepitch or otherwise teams will beat us.

I had a wonderful time in Galway. Everybody at thefootball club were really, really good to me. I’ll beforever grateful to the directors and the chairman,John McCormack, for giving me my first chance as amanager. They showed great faith in me; I was 32 yearsof age when I took over and it was a wonderful learningcurve. It’s not nice to see the predicament they’re in butit’s difficult times all over the place. We’re all suffering

financially; gates are down and sponsorship is down. And, as I found in Galway, attendances are always aproblem. Even when the team was doing really well,I don’t think the gates were what we have in Dundalk, and it’s a shame, because it’s a wonderful city. I justdon’t know how you get the supporters in through theturnstiles. There is a lot goes on in Galway; the festivals, the Gaelic sports and also the rugby. It’s a very sportycity; it’s just unfortunate that there aren’t enoughpeople going to Terryland Park.

Finally, I would like to thank Michael Hector for, firstof all, coming to play for Dundalk. It was a huge stepfor an 18-year-old kid leaving his club, his country andgoing into digs with lads he didn’t particularly know, ina league he didn’t know about. He showed a lot ofcourage coming over. He was a wonderful part of thesquad, a fantastic young talent and we’re all desperatelydisappointed to see him leave, but we wish him all thebest in the future. Enjoy the game!

Ian FosterDundalk FC manager

Both were struggling to ‘get out’, but without adefender on the bench it was very difficult to changethings. It wasn’t down to those two boys that the resultchanged so quickly, but it certainly didn’t help us.

We just have to all stick together now. The injuries havebecome an issue, but we’re still good enough to put inperformances like that. Hopefully, we can see games outa little bit better or a little bit stronger. We were due totravel to Bray Wanderers last Friday but it was obviouslypostponed due to a waterlogged pitch at the CarlisleGrounds, and I think it was a blessing really. ShaneGuthrie came back into the squad but Dean and Colinhadn’t fully recovered from their injuries, so we werepleasantly surprised and pleased that the game wascalled off. Obviously, it’s going to be a quick turnaroundwith the game re-fixed for Tuesday 28 June, and it’s onethat we’ll look forward to. Looking at tonight, it’s nevereasy playing against a team that are fighting for theirlives, like we found against Drogheda. My players cameoff it, in fairness to them for the first time this season, and they got found wanting. Even in the Droghedagame, we dominated possession, but we didn’t really

KICK-OFFDUNDALK v GALWAY UNITED

GOOD EVENING everyone and welcome toOriel Park for tonight’s Airtricity LeaguePremier Division game against Galway United. It is a pleasure to welcome the Galway Unitedmanager, Sean Connor, his players and staffas well as the club officials and supporters toDundalk for this evening’s game.

As I am writing these notes in advance of lastTuesday night’s round of Premier Division matches,Galway currently find themselves at the foot of theAirtricity League Premier Division table, threepoints behind Drogheda United. This is the fourthtime that we have played Galway United this seasonand of course we just played them three weeks agoin the third round of the FAI Ford Cup. While wehave been successful in winning our three previousleague encounters against the Connacht side thisseason, Ian and the players know that they will haveto be at their best to take all three league points onoffer tonight.

From our point of view we have unfortunately hada poor run over the last few league games. As I ampenning this piece in advance of our trip to Tallaghtto play Shamrock Rovers last Tuesday night, hopefully we have now reversed our run of threeleague defeats and have got a result in that game. With a small squad and a terrible time with injuries,

I guess that it was inevitable that we were going tohit a rocky patch at some stage during the leagueseason. However as I’ve said many times previouslyin football, the next game is the only one thatmatters and we must look to get another unbeatenleague run going again and start climbing the leaguetable.

With last Friday night’s game against Bray Wanderersat the Carlisle Ground called off, it has given anopportunity to players to have a bit of a rest andrefresh themselves for this week’s matches.

We were handed a really tough draw in the fourthround of the FAI Ford Cup against DroghedaUnited at Hunky Dorys Park. We have beenunlucky in the Cup draws this year, drawingAirtricity League Premier Division opposition inboth rounds. While the game against Drogheda issome way off (we will already have played them inHunky Dorys Park in our scheduled league gameon 12 August) it will certainly set the pulses racingas the game approaches.

With the transfer window opening in July, theBoard have been in discussion with Ian about thepossibility of taking in some new players to theclub. As it stands we are not in a position toincrease our playing budget for the rest of the

season. While this isunfortunate, we haveto be very realistic asthe money simply isn’tavailable to add to thesquad at the moment. That’s the financialreality we findourselves. Clubfinances are extremelytight and we have tomanage the club in that light.

We have a number of high profile fund raisingevents planned and the first of these is the visitof the Liverpool legends in Saturday 23 July. Thiswill be an opportunity for all local soccer fans tocome out and see the past heroes of Liverpool FCin action, and of course the presence of our ownStephen Staunton in the Liverpool line-up will onlyadd to the occasion. This is a very importantfundraising opportunity for Dundalk FC and wewould ask that all soccer fans in the town supportthis event.

This is Galway’s second visit in less than three weeksafter our FAI Ford Cup tie on 5 June. But that resultwill mean nothing now. I thought it was a greatperformance on the day and we’ll be looking formore of the same this evening. Going 1-0 down wasa surprise and I don’t think we deserved that. It cameout of nowhere. I think had we scored first it couldhave opened the gates. But we got a great responsefrom the boys and it was good to go in 2-1 up athalf-time. I think we were comfortable in the game.I don’t think they really stretched us or had manychances. I don’t think Peter Cherrie. It was acomfortable win. We had a few players missing atthe back but I thought we defended well when weneeded to.

People spoke about complacency being an issueagainst Drogheda but I don’t think we will have toworry about that tonight. Going into the Droghedagame, maybe our attitudes weren’t right, I’m notsure. But we know against Galway that we have towin and that nothing less than three points willdo. Injuries are killing us at the moment. It’s not

IT WAS DISAPPOINTING to recently lose ourlong unbeaten home record. Our form here atOriel Park was our base for pushing up the table. We had been very strong here and it wasextremely disappointing to lose our last twogames, especially against Drogheda United in alocal derby. Our performance wasn’t goodenough in that game, we weren’t at the races andwe didn’t really deserve to get anything out of it.

But against Saint Patrick’s Athletic I thought it wasone of our better displays at home. Especially in thefirst half, we had a couple cleared off the line and weshould have been ahead at the break. It just didn’t goin for us. We got the goal then about ten minutes intothe second half but I don’t know what happenedafter that; for last 20 minutes or so we just fell apart.Tonight, we will try to get back on track. However, despite Galway United’s poor run of results we knowthat we will have to enter the game with the rightattitude and be professional in how we go about it.Hopefully, we can start another long unbeaten homerun, which we need to do to climb up the table.

’’making excuses but injuries really are killingus in the last few games. All season, we have hada lot of injuries and wejust can’t seem to get afull squad for games. In every game we playwe seem to pick up oneinjury, maybe two, andwe’re going into gameswith players not fully fit. We’re struggling, but wehave got to keep going – there’s nothing else we can do.

Personally, I feel fresh (after playing every minute of the season so far). I don’t feel tired; it’s only themiddle of the season, you shouldn’t be feeling tiredyet. I just love playing every minute. I don’t want tobe rested. I just want to play every game. The moodhas always been good in the camp. I’m putting thesenotes together before last Tuesday’s trip to TallaghtStadium, so looking at the results before that we

have all been disappointed. But we know as a teamthat we can play better, we have done, and that wecan pick up points anywhere we play. The gameskeep coming thick and fast, and we have another big one next Tuesday in the re-fixed game away to Bray Wanderers. I think it’s important to startbeating the teams around us, and hopefully we can do that.

Finally, we’re all disappointed to have lost MichaelHector, whose loan will not be extended. Michael was a big influence on the team, he played really well when he came in, and everyone would like towish him all the best in his future career. For us, we have got to move on from it, stick together as a team and hopefully get back in form over the coming weeks.

Enjoy the game!

WWHHOO AAMM II??I was born in Pato Branco in the late 1980s and started playing indoor football at the age of three. Soon, I became known around myhome state of Paraná for being skilful and a talented goalscorer. Itravelled to Porto Alegre to try out for Gremio, the club I supported asa boy, but I was unsuccessful there. Local rivals Internacional tried toconvince me to instead play for them, and despite the two clubsbeing bitter enemies, my parents persuaded me to join ʻColoradoʼ.When I was 11, I broke my arm and while examining the injuries, doctors found a tumour in the arm and feared that it would have to beamputated. But a successful operation removed the tumour. In June2006, at 16 years of age, I was signed by Internacional to compete inthe Campeonato Brasileiro Sub-20. I became a prolific goalscorerand finished at the top of the goalsʼ charts as we beat Gremio 4-0. Imade my first-team debut later that year against Palmeiras, and Iscored my first pro goal within the first minute of the game, while Iadded two assists in a 4-1 win. I was part of the squad that then wonthe FIFA Club World Cup. During that event, I broke Peleʼs record asI became the youngest ever player to score in a FIFA-organised competition. I joined AC Milan in January 2008 and, days later, againscored on my debut, against Napoli in a 5-2 home win. Who Am I?ANSWERS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE

Sean Connor

Sean Connor’s career took in Distillery, Port Vale, Macclesfield, Ardsand Cliftonville before injury ended his playing days. He then beganan unconventional career path towards management. He spentsome time as Birmingham City press officer before coaching in theUS and in English non-league circles. He spent some time scoutingfor Stoke and Lincoln before returning to Ireland as manager at FirstDivision Sligo Rovers in 2004. Within 15 months he had led Sligo topromotion and in their first season back in the top flight Rovers finished an impressive fifth. He moved to Bohemians and thoughhe led then to third place in the League, the FAI Cup semis and theLeague Cup final the club terminated his contract at the end of the 2007 season amid rumours of off-field improprieties. Bohs wereeventually forced to settle a court case for wrongful dismissal. Connor then replaced John Gill at newly-promoted Dundalk for the2009 campaign, where 23 red cards blighted a fifth-placed finish.Club and manager went their separate ways for 2010, with Connorending up at Galway, and maintaining the club’s top flight status onthe pitch thanks to a play-off defeat of Bray. But licensing issueshave left him short on time to field a team for the 2011 season.

and these feelings seemedjustified when Sweden got off to a glorious start withgoals from Borgesson andBerndtsson inside the first 13 minutes. However, the Irish eventuallywoke from their slumber tomount a comeback. New manager John Gill wasunder pressure straight away asDundalk lost their first fourleague games. Four wins firedby the goals of Phillip Hughesand Peter Hynes suggested thatDundalk could compete, but another three straight lossesseemed to have ended Dundalk’s season in May. A remarkable, spirited 20 gameunbeaten run saw Dundalkreach the coat-tails of ShamrockRovers and Galway. Any hope oftopping the table ahead ofRovers went by the wayside in alate 1-0 defeat at bogey teamMonaghan, but Dundalk heldGalway off to finish second andqualify for the playoff, whichthey duly won against a Waterford side that had failedbadly in the Premier. That wasnot enough though. In a vain attempt to put some structureand discipline on the league theFAI initiated an Independent Assessment Group to select thePremier Division. ShamefullyDundalk were excluded.

Galway were involved in athree-way battle for the First Division title with Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers. A cruciallate season defeat at home toDundalk conceded ground in the title race and Galway ultimately finished third. Thelack of a prolific goalscorer mayappear to have cost Galway, with Barry Moran the club's topscorer with just 11 league goals, but United were the division’sjoint top scorers with Dundalk.A surfeit of draws was morecostly - Galway lost just fiveleague games, compared toDundalk’s nine, but drew twelveto Dundalk’s five. Not that athird place finish mattered, ultimately. Galway’s IAG presentation was probably thebest prepared and most creativeof all 22 clubs. With off-field criteria as important as on-fieldresults, Galway’s case was basedon optimistic but semi-plausiblefinancial projections. It wasenough to bluff their way into the Premier Division.

One of the most extraordinaryseasons in Irish football historyended as a complete and uttershambles. Dublin City foldedduring the season. After muchargument the results of theirgames were expunged, withShelbourne threatening legal action as title rivals Derry hadeffectively been ‘forgiven’ fordropping points against them.Shels were busy threateninglegal action against Derry anddemanding a match versus Bohemians to be replayed. They ultimately topped thetable but the reason for theirdesperation soon became apparent. At the end of the season all Shels’ players werereleased as they were owedwages. Shels had their Premierlicence revoked ahead of the2007 season. Remarkably theIAG process completed failed tonotice Shelbourne’s financialdifficulties. More remarkablystill Shelbourne were allowed to retain the 2006 league titleafter being relegated!

Cork City produced a fine UEFAChampions League performanceto eliminated the seededCypriot side Apollon Limassol.Billy Woods got the only goal ofthe game at Turner’s Cross anda Dan Murray header secured a1-1 in the heat of Cyprus. Cork’sachievement is underlined bythe fact that several Apollonplayers were involved inCyprus’s 5-2 win over Irelandsoon after. The Leesiders progressed to meet Red Star Belgrade, losing 4-0 on aggregate. In the UEFA CupDrogheda beat HJK Helsinki before losing out to Sweden’ IK Start 11-10 on penalties after the longest shootout in European football history. Derrybeat IFK Gothenburg home andaway and thrashed Scotland’sGretna. Derry’s 5-1 win at Mothewell’s Fir Park was thebiggest home defeat ever suffered by a Scottish team inEurope. Derry then held Paris StGermain to a scoreless draw athome before losing 2-0 in Paris.

Dundalk native and Republic ofIreland legend Stephen Stauntonwas the surprise selection asnew Ireland manager. Stauntongot off to a winning start, withan ebullient Ireland sweepingSweden away in a 3-0 friendlywin in March. Friendly defeats athome to Chile and Holland - acomprehensive 4-0 defeat -hinted at difficulties ahead. Ireland opened their UEFA Euro 2008 campaign away to abuoyant Germany side whichhas just finished third at theFIFA World Cup. Staunton andIreland performed adequately, going down to a single, deflectedLukas Podolski strike. The kniveswere out, though, afterStaunton’s second competitivegame. Ireland produced a dismaldisplay in a catastrophic 5-2thrashing in Cyprus. Some pridewas restored in a solid draw athome to Czech Republic beforeIreland rounded off the year witha 5-0 thrashing of San Marino inthe last international match atthe old Lansdowne Road.

The 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany was notable for its tactical sophistication but alsofor its defensiveness. A 4-4-2 formation, or any sign of tworecognised strikers on the oneteam was a novelty. While therewas a goal glut early in the finalsthat dried up dramatically lateron, with the 15 knockoutmatches up to the final yieldingjust 26 goals. Germany’s MiroslavKlose was the tournament’s topscorer with just five goals - thelowest total to win the GoldenBoot since 1962. Defenders weresome of the stars of the show, with the likes of Lahm, Grosso,Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Carvalho,Nuno Valente, Abidal and Thuram standing out. Switzerland achieving the distinction of going home without conceding a goal. Therewere moments of entertainmenttoo. Argentina, Germany andBrazil entertained at times, while Ribery, Zidane, Maxi Rodriguez and Totti injectingsome much needed panache.

Philip Hughes enjoyed probably his finest season in the League of Ireland. The exquisitelytalented Dubliner scored 21 league goals forDundalk, breaking Martin Reilly’s club record.Hughes’ intelligent link-up play and finelycrafted finishing were key to Dundalk’s rise up the table. He scored regularly through theseason, including nine in seven games as Dundalk overhauled Galway. Hughes began his career at Tolka Rovers, joining League ofIreland St St James’s Gate in 2001. He soonmoved to Pats, Kilkenny, Kildare, Dublin City,UCD and Monaghan, sporadically setting theleague alight. Hughes struggled to regain his2006 form in a disappointing 2007 season andsubsequently continued to his tour of the FirstDivision with Shelbourne, Kildare, Monaghanand Shels again.

Versatile young defender Alan Keane was a key component of Galway United’s defence in 2006. The Galway native was generally deployed at right back but was adaptableenough to fill in anywhere across the back or on the right wing. In 2006 Keane was votedGalway United’s Young Player of the Year for a second successive season as United pushedDundalk and Shamrock Rovers for the title.

After four seasons at Terryland Park the former Mervue United man moved on to join Sligo Rovers. An FAI Cup winner (despitemissing a penalty in the shootout in the finalagainst Shamrock Rovers) and League Cup winner with Sligo in 2010, he is now well established at right back in the Sligo rearguard.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given was in fine form for club and country. The dependable Donegal man played all of Newcastle’s 38 Premier League games in the2005/06 season, captaining Newcastle on occasion when Alan Shearer was injured. He was named on the Premier League Team of the Season as he matured into one of thefinest keepers in the game, eliminating the occasional high profile errors that had blemished his earlier career. Newcastle underlined their faith in Given in 2006, granting him a five-year extension to his contract. An injury sustained in Septemberspared Given the trip to Cyprus, with PaddyKenny deputising in the 5-2 defeat. He hasgone on to become Ireland’s most cappedplayer.

33-year-old World Cup winning captain FabioCannavaro became the oldest winner of theFIFA World Player of the Year award, and theonly defender to win the award in its 19 yearhistory. In a noticeably defensive World CupCannavaro was the star performer, leadingItaly, who conceded just two goals in sevengames, to victory. Cannavaro’s determination, impeccable timing and superb tackling morethan compensated for his relatively lack ofheight, at five-foot-nine. The former Napoli ball boy graduated to play for his hometownteam before moving to Parma and Inter, eventually joining Juventus in 2004. At Juve he won two Serie A titles (subsequently revoked). Cannavaro joined Real Madrid afterthe World Cup, winning two La Liga titles.

PLAYING WITH Dundrum-based Beaumont Schoolboysteam, just down the roadfrom Milltown, it was no surprise that ShamrockRovers was Larry Wyse’s firstsenior club. Under SeanThomas he had collected his first competition honourwhen the Hoops defeatedSligo Rovers in the final of the 1976/77 League Cup.

But the appointment ofJohnny Giles as manager and the arrival of a clutch ofexperienced players like Eamonn Dunphy and PaddyMulligan, saw the Milltowndeparture of Larry after twomonths of the new regime.

Shortly after Sean Thomaswas appointed manager ofAthlone Town, in October1977, Larry was one of severalex-Rovers to head for theMidlands. Harry McCue wouldtake the same route. For thenext two seasons Athlonefilled their usual middle ofthe table role, but the arrivalof Turlough O’Connor in thesummer of 1979 changedeverything.

An opening season eight-wins-on-the-trot deliveredthe Tyler All-Ireland Cup,after victories over Coleraine,Linfield, Shamrock Roversand Drogheda in the two-legged final, with Larry pitching in three goals during the campaign. Beforethe season ended there wasmore silverware at St Mel’sPark—the League Cup—andthere was also a runner upspot in the Leinster SeniorCup and a third place Leaguefinish, the highest in theclub’s history.

It got better the following year with Athlone’s firstChampionship pennant leading to Larry’s first European experience whenAthlone gave an outstandingperformance in the Champions Cup, losing out to KB Copenhagen on awaygoals after two drawn gamesand a 3-3 aggregate.

By the end of the 1983/84 season, his seventh at StMel’s Park, when Larry leftAthlone, after a tiff with manager O’Connor, he hadanother Championship medal (1982/83) and had appeared in three moreLeague Cup finals, takinghome two more winnersmedals (81/82 and 82/83) and a runner up memento in 83/84.

He spent the next two yearswith Bohemians, but like therest of the League teams, theywere left in the slipstream ofthe Jim McLaughlin-bossedShamrock Rovers, en route to four successive LeagueChampionships. By the time

he got a surprise call fromTurlough O’Connor to joinhim again at Dundalk for the86/87 season, he had added a League runner-up award to his growing honours collection for Bohs’ secondspot in 84/85.

Coming to Oriel Park withTerry Eviston, they joined agrowing colony of ex-Athloneplayers—already there wereRoddy Collins, Joey Maloneand Harry McCue—all completing O’Connor’s panel for a major assault on the top honours. His second odyssey under Turlough O’Connor was asproductive as his first. Part of a midfield combinationhailed by their many supporters as the best ever to represent the club, he hadMartin Murray and BarryKehoe as his partners andthis trio played key roles in all the highlights from thisera—the three-match FAI Cup semi-final victory overBohemians in 86/87, the many memorable games during the League-Cup Double victory in 87/88, European matches againstAjax, Red Star Belgrade andWettingen, a League runnerup finish in 88/89 and twomore League Cup awards, bringing his count of LeagueCup winners medals to six. He played a central role in the1-0 1988 FAI Cup final victoryover Derry City, securing thepenalty kick in the 20thminute, converted by JohnCleary, and with Kehoe and Murray, dominated themidfield area as Dundalk contained all of Derry’s efforts and won the Double.

Larry Wyse

Page 35: Dundalk v Galway United (Friday 24 June 2011)

Profile

Born in Dublin on 13 November 1956, Larry Wyse wenton to make 436 appearances in a glittering League of Ireland career which spanned 17 seasons with five different clubs - Shamrock Rovers, Athlone Town (twice),Bohemians, Dundalk and Galway United. In total, heclaimed 11 major domestic competition honours - threeleagues, two FAI Cups and six League Cups - with sixrunners-up honours - three leagues, an FAI Cup and two League Cups.

At Dundalk (1986 to 1990), he won the League and FAICup double in 1987/88, as well as two League Cups(86/87 and 89/90) and the 1988/89 Presidents Cup. Heplayed 153 times for Dundalk, and scored 27 times, making 100 starts (plus four substitute appearances) in the league, netting 16 times in the process. Other outingsand goals were: FAI Cup 18/5, European competition 6/0, League Cup 21/4, LeinsterSenior Cup 2/2 and other matches 2/0.

Wyse was twice the recipient of the Soccer Writers Player of the Month Award: hisfirst in September 1983, while with Athlone Town, and his Dundalk honour came in January 1989. When nominated in 1978 for the Sunday Independents Most Improved Player Award, he was described as has two good feetwants to playfor 90 minutes is not selfishhas good visionknows when to go forward andhave a crack at goal and when to cover back.

Larry Wyse

After four highly successfulOriel Park seasons, Larry accepted an offer from JoeyMalone, newly appointedmanager of Galway United, tospend his 15th League season(90/91) with his fifth club. What he didn’t bargain forwas another FAI Cup winner’smedal.

While Dundalk were claiming another LeagueChampionship under Turlough O’Connor, Galwayhad recovered from a dreadfulstart—seven losses in theiropening nine matches—todispel relegation fears byearly March and to sweepthrough the FAI Cup campaign to a final berth atLansdowne Road against theCup aristocrats ShamrockRovers.

Carrying an injury andcleared to play in the finalonly after a 45-minute pre-match work-out, he ensured that Galway matchedRovers in the vital midfieldsector. A late winner fromJohnny Glynn gave the Westerners their first majorsuccess and Larry pocketedhis second FAI winner’smedal. Early in the followingyear when Galway drewOdense in the Cup Winners’Cup he made his 16th European appearance —Athlone 4, Bohemians 4, Dundalk 6 and Galway 2 —spread across three competitions (ChampionsCup 6, UEFA Cup 6 and CupWinner’s Cup 4).

His last and 17th league season was spent back atAthlone Town, now in the

First Division and under themanagement of TurloughO’Connor’s brother Micheal. When he scored his loneLeague goal in late Marchagainst Kilkenny City he wasmaintaining a remarkablerecord of scoring in each ofhis seventeen League of Ireland seasons. With fiveclubs he had made 436League appearances alone

and had his name on 86League goals. When he turnedhis hand to the managementgame he had one special moment when with LeinsterSenior League GlenmoreCeltic he delivered the Intermediate Cup in 1997, onthe 50th anniversary of theclub’s foundation, defeatingCork club Everton in theTurner’s Cross final.

THE MAN WITH ONE NAME:As a general rule football fans willuse first names or nicknames toencourage a player and surnamesto barrack, abuse or threaten. Not so with (Michael) Hector.D’Shed’s latest cult hero (until hisrecent recall from loan by Reading)is affectionately, and almostexclusively, referred to as ‘Hector’.

Sadly one of the main reasons thatour Hector is called simply Hectoris the presence of another highprofile one-name Hector in Irishsociety- that most risible ofhyper-culchies, RTE’s belovedHector Ó'hEochagáin. RTEHector seems to get everywhere…and not in a good way, like StephenMaher, but in a bad way, likecancer. Apologies to any Galwayfans for whom RTE Hector is ahero, but I’ve got a cúpla focal forRTE Hector and one of them is‘off ’. An dtuigeann tú?

Anyway, back Dundalk’s numbersix, the real Hector. The Spectatoris uncommonly proud of the factthat he has always thought of(Michael) Hector as just plain oldHector- because he could neverremember his first name. For along time the closest The Spectatorcould get to remembering hisfirst name was Kevin, as in KevinHector, the England internationaland Derby County star of the 70s.But then again The Spectator hasonly just begun to accept the factthat Ross Gaynor is not TommyGaynor.

So just plain Hector it is - and whatan apt name it is. Hector, as all ofOriel Park’s classical scholars willknow, was the greatest hero of

Troy in Greek mythology. A fineand appropriate namesake, I thinkyou’ll agree.

Reducing Hector to a singleBrazilian-style name makes sensefrom a footballing point of viewtoo. With his dynamic foraysforward and his always entertainingcontributions Hector deserves aBrazilian name. Continuing thetheme (or flogging a dead horse),as The Spectator is prone to do,let’s see about Brazilian-ising someof the rest of the squad, for thecraic.

Bearing in mind that the suffix –inho means little or younger*, asin Ronaldinho is little Ronaldo,Jarizinho was little Jair etc, we’llstart by renaming our mostBrazilian player. “Daniel Kearns”simply isn’t a sexy enough name.He shall be renamed Daninho. While –inho means little, thesuffix –ão denotes large. Tostão,Falcão, Luisão... you get thepicture. Six-foot-five ShaneGuthrie surely deserves a nameto match the stature. He shallhenceforth be known as Guthrão.

The joy of Brazilian namingconventions is that there are noconventions. You can just select acool nickname and run with it…

witness Dunga, Pelé, Careca,Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Romario, Vava,Garrincha, Bebeto, Hulk, Gerson,Sócrates and Zico. Less glamorousbut equally memorable are the likesof Brazilian internationals Alex,Fred, Jo, Alan and Cris. With thisin mind The Spectator is officiallyunofficially renaming half oursquad. You can spend half timeworking out who’s who. Or go fora pint, if you’re that way inclined.

Anyhow….. in addition to theaforementioned Hector, Daninhoand Guthrão I hereby introduceQuiglinho, Hawk, Cherrião, Griff,Wardinho, Spud and Johnnybrinho, under the management team ofFozinho and Darius. Dundalk,it’s just like watching Brazil, hey.

(*Incidentally similar use of the –“inho” suffix would be wiselyemployed at Terryland Park.Galway are currently givingstatisticians, including the anorakwearing Spectator, nightmareswith the presence of Seán Kellyand Shaun Kelly in their squad.Surely the former Dundalk fullback Shaun Kelly could berenamed “Kellinho” in the interestof consistent and accurate stats? For God’s sake, won’t someonethink of the stats?)
