Dear Parent/Carer OneSight is visi ng Dunedoo Central School on Wednesday 31st May 2017, to pro‐vide a FREE vision screening. At this screening, your child’s distance and near vision will be tested to ensure they can see the blackboard and read a book, and their colour vision and depth percep‐on will also be tested. An optometrist will conduct a basic test and a full test if re‐
quired. Should your child require a full eye examina on and requires glasses, they will choose these on the day and be ordered and sent back to the school free of charge. As the charity founda on of the Luxo ca Group (OPSM, Sunglass Hut, Laubman and Pank), OneSight provides free eye care and glasses to low socio economic and re‐mote communi es, and have been doing so in Australia for over 25 years. OneSight provides this eye care program free of charge, with no obliga on. OneSight Parental Permission and Ques onnaire notes have been sent home with all students. Please complete these forms and return to the DCS Front Office ASAP.
ATTENTION: ALL DCS STUDENTS
WILL BE TESTED, UNLESS
OTHERWISE INSTRUCTED
BY PARENTS/CARERS.
Hello everyone. Congratulations to every student who received an award at today’s Merit Assembly, which is the first of two
for Term 2, I appreciate your dedication to high achieve‐ment in the tasks or activities completed so far this term. Part of my speech for today follows:
Partnerships are very important in schools these days. They involve setting up a mutual benefit for each party of the partnership – “If you do this for our student we will do this to support you”. We have engaged in many partnerships at DCS including: ASPIRE, the Three Rivers Trade Training Centre, School‐TAFE, Skillset, Community School‐to‐Work‐Placement and the Moolarben Mine partnership, to name a few. Credit for the establishment of most of these careers‐ oriented partnerships must go to Mrs Fergusson, our Ca‐reers Officer, who has devoted a great deal of time into creating and supporting them.
At today’s assembly, we were to meet the leader of one of our partners in education‐development. A very approacha‐ble, clever man, Mr Grant Arnold, who manages the Human Resources section of Moolarben Mines, a very prominent business, in our local community and one at which some of our parents are employed. Unfortunately, Mr Arnold had to cancel at the very last minute.
Last year you may remember we met the Vice Chancellor of the UNSW, Professor Ian Jaycobs, the man in charge of AS‐PIRE. We all know what the partnership with ASPIRE has done to support the development of students at this school, through its devotion towards tertiary training. The enlightening school visits by their team, as they entertain us through their informative workshops, the excursions to the University of New South Wales, in Sydney, through “Year 8 Beyond the Gate” and the other excursions in year 9,10 and 11, to other venues have inspired our students to think about life beyond schooling at Dunedoo and how best they can meet their aspirations based on what they do well. The ASPIRE partnership has grown over time from a group of six small, rural schools comprising our neighbours: Coolah, Mendooran, Baradine and Binnaway etc, to over twenty now.
The Moolarben Mine has supported our students over the past six years: through their scholarship program, “the Moolarben Spirit Award” ; their Apprentice/Traineeship program; and their Career Development program which provides tours for interested students of the Moolarben Mine workplace and the Try‐a‐Trade day. This partnership is in conjunction with our neighbouring schools: Gulgong, Mudgee and Kandos High Schools. Many students have benefited from this partnership and we have been privi‐leged to have two overall winners of the Moolarben Spirit Award: Effie Fergusson and this year Lauren Sullivan. This Award is a very prestigious award for our students to win. Every year we select a Junior Student and a Senior Stu‐dent , who have undergone a series of selection criteria to represent our school for the overall “Moolarben Spirit Award” These students undergo a similar process at the Group level and a winner from each section is selected.
Lauren was selected overall winner in the Senior section because of her outstanding representation of the commu‐nity at school and representative level in academic, cultural and sporting activities
It was, in fact, at the recent Moolarben Award Evening in Mudgee, that Mrs Sullivan suggested we invite Mr Arnold to our next Merit Assembly. We were so pleased when Mr Arnold accepted because he had a wonderful message to give to our students. That is, he has a similar background to most of them, coming from a small, rural community, and a very inspiring, personal success story based around our school motto, that if you do “your best always”, great things can happen to you. We hope that Mr Arnold can join us at one of our future Merit meetings.
It was nice to hear Mr Snell continue our school tradition of providing piano accompaniment at the school assemblies. The performance by the “Rock Band” consisting of Lachie Stoddart on drums, Meg Abbott on keyboard, Mr Snell on acoustic guitar accompanying the delightful singing of Montana Henderson was fantastic.
Mr Bush and myself enjoyed another trip to Coonabarabran with a very well behaved group of inspiring young athletes who participated in the Terry McGoldrick (former Principal) Rugby Sevens. The boys games were very competitive with some huge clashes at the breakdown. The girls team showed a range of skills and some fine finesse, with a num‐ber of tries scored by our players. Every student who went, participated in the games, at some stage and all said they enjoyed the experience.
Congratulations to our Cross Country organisers for anoth‐er very successful day with a very high participation rate. Congratulations to all students who ran and completed the course and the successful students who will progress to the next level.
We have two new secondary teachers beginning with clas‐ses this week: Mr Vitnell (not Bitnell) with TAS and Miss Foster with Agriculture. I’d like to thank Mrs Piper for her great work in maintaining the Ag program after Mr Smith’s departure.
This week sees a continuation of the Year 11 Half Yearly Ex‐ams and the beginning of the Year 7‐10 Half Yearly exams. I hope all students are taking these exams seriously because they contribute to your overall yearly assessment. Read your notes, attempt the practice questions, check with your teachers that you understand the concepts and the processes and you should do very well. Good luck to our teams at the Central Schools Touch Championships on Thursday and Friday. We may also have some students par‐ticipating in the u/16 Rugby Carnival in Dubbo.
Mrs Stanford has asked that in order to make the transition to LMBR successful, a letter will be sent to parents and staff advising them of dates when the School Banking Sys‐tem will be inaccessible and that we all excursion funds need to be paid for by parents by the end of term2.
Enjoy your week!
Peter Campbell, Principal
Congratula ons to today’s Merit Assembly award winners. I am proud of your achievements.
Well done to the fabulous runners at last week’s Cross Country Carnival. My goal was to run the 1km course with all the Infants students but the reality was they were too fast for me. At least I know there was no one le behind! We turn our a en on now to next Friday’s (June 2nd) Athle cs Carnival. More informa on about this in next week’s newsle er.
It was great to see all the students who joined our ‘Walking Buses’ last Friday. It was a fun and healthy way to cele‐brate Walk to School Day. Thank you to Mrs Shephard for organising this event. Let’s hope the ‘buses’ are even big‐ger next year!
The focus of report wri ng is upon us and as such students will begin their half yearly assessments this week. All the best to the Infants and Primary children. Mr Ben Kline, Assistant Principal Infants
Kindergarten / Year: I have been impressed with how K/1 have approached our whole class interac ve
wri ng lessons. Most of the me, reading and wri ng lessons occur in small groups but once a week we switch to
whole class. Students are working hard and are producing fabulous results.
Kindergarten have brought home the third of their Jolly Phonics booklets today. Please prac ce these sounds with
them at home, including those in the previous two booklets. We’re having great success with this program and stu‐
dents are enjoying our daily word work ac vi es.
This week in Fitness, K/1 begin training for next week’s Athle cs Carnival (June 2nd). We focus on number and pic‐
ture pa erns in Maths and Year 1 will be focussing on plurals.
Have a great week. Mr Ben Kline
Year 2/3: Welcome to week 5. Congratula ons to all students who received awards at our 1st merit assembly
for Term 2. Also a big well done to everyone who ran the school Cross Country last Thursday, I’m sure you all had fun. In Spelling this week Year 2 will learn words with the “ai” sound as in pay and main while Year 3 will concentrate on words containing the “ei” sound as in seize and weird. In Grammar our focus is Alphabe cal Order and our shared big book is “Dry”. In Science with Mrs Gallagher we are looking at “Fun Fluids”, looking at mixing, oil, water and de‐tergent to see what happens. In History with Mrs Abbo we are discussing Entertainment now and in the past. Please remember to encourage your child to learn their spelling words, complete homework and read nightly. Congratula ons to Oscar Christensen our student from last week and to Chloe Brown and Jack Wentworth Brown who received merit cer ficates. Mrs E. Yeo

STUDENT OF THE WEEK
Firstly congratula ons to all our Merit recipients today. Well done! What a great effort the Primary stu‐
dents put into last Thursday’s Cross Country! Congratula ons to everyone who had a go. Notes will go
home soon regarding the next level of Cross Country for those who qualified. Our next big spor ng event
will be the DCS Athle cs Carnival, on 2nd June. We will be prac sing skills for this during Primary fitness
and sport sessions.
Events such as sports, Primary assemblies and whole school merit assemblies always a ract a good num‐
ber of parents and visitors. The children love having family around to watch their ac vi es, and we appre‐
ciate the me and effort parents and visitors give to support our school.
This week Primary is back to normal, however in Week 7 we have PSSA Soccer and Netball School’s Cup
compe ons. Students will nominate for tryouts throughout this week, and notes will go home to eligible
students soon.
Finally, please ensure jumpers and jackets are clearly labelled. The days start off chilly, but children are
shedding jumpers and jackets during the day, with many being ‘misplaced’. We have a large collec on of
lonely clothing at the moment—all without names.
Have a great week 5. Mrs Georgia Shephard ‐ Assistant Principal (Primary)
Year 3/4: Hello everybody and welcome to Week 5 Term 2! Congratula ons to all students who
par cipated in the annual cross country last Thursday. The weather was fantas c and it was great to see so many students out on the track earning points for their spor ng house. Students who are eligible to represent DCS at Dubbo District on the 7th June will be no fied later this week. All students in Year 3/4 will get the normal homework this week. If there are any problems, don’t stress. Just a empt what you can and return it. P.S – Due to the inclement weather on Friday I was unable to hold the P.S.S.A Soccer try outs, so this week (weather permi ng) I will be hold the selec on trial for the team for our upcoming game against Orana Heights to be played at Dubbo in Week 7. So if you are a boy or girl in Years 4, 5 or 6 and you like Soccer you are welcome to come and try out for the team. Cheers, Mr A Honeyse
Year 5/6: A er the madness that was last week with the Cross Country as well as our Primary
Assembly, I am looking forward to ge ng back to a ‘normal’ week. If you weren’t lucky enough to be in
the audience last Friday, then you missed a really good assembly. Students worked well on prepara ons,
and the final product earned us lots of posi ve feedback from visitors and staff. Well done, Stage 3.
This week homework is as usual, but I encourage parents to review their child’s competence with mes
tables. The difference between the abili es of students who know mes tables and those who struggle is
vast, and affects learning in all strands of Mathema cs. Please prac se these regularly! Have a great week,
everyone. Mrs Georgia Shephard—Stage 3 Teacher
ANNUAL PRIMARY

THE END OF TERM 2.
TOTAL COST $350.
This term has started with a whirl, Year 11 & 12 at-tended a Careers Expo at Dubbo Senior Campus, preceded by a visit to CSU Dubbo Campus. Although this campus is small, there is a fantastic opportunity for students to attain tertiary education in a rural envi-ronment. The Careers Expo, made up of many stalls, showcased the opportunities for students POST– school. From the Defence Forces to TAFE, tertiary study to apprenticeships and traineeships; every stu-dent had many options to investigate recruitment, ac-commodation, early entry, costs and scholarships.
This was followed by an informative session by the Universities Admission Centre (UAC) all about the ATAR and applying for uni.
The main message here is that students should study subjects they enjoy and do well in. Just about any combination of courses can lead to a good ATAR-you
just need to give it your best!
The ATAR is a rank that indi-cates your posi-tion overall against all other NSW students.

Rugby Sevens
Wednesday week 4 of Term 2 saw the DCS rugby sevens teams travel to Coonabarabran for the Terry McGoldrick Rugby Gala day. The girls team played three games winning one and losing their other two. The boys also played three games and played well but unfortunately lost all three. On the Tuesday before the gala day the teams had a development session with NSW rugby union. Both the teams learnt new skills and methods of attack and defence. The girls are now going to play in the NSW rugby sevens gala day in Dubbo on Tuesday. Big thankyou to Mr Campbell, Mr Bush and NSW Rugby for all the organising.
DCS Athletics Carnival Will be held at DCS on Friday 2nd June
DCS Cross Country It was a great day for our school Cross Country Carnival held on the Dunedoo Golf Course last Thursday afternoon, with lots of enthusiastic participants. Then the races began… We would like to congratulate everyone who participated, earning points for their houses. Results and age champions will be announced shortly.
