Principal SRC and Year 12 show initiative

Congratulations to the year 12 students and all who

assisted them to produce an excellent cake stall at

school on Wednesday. All profits from the sales will

be used to subsidise the special school jackets they

have selected for this year. Each year 12 group is permitted to

Year 9 Laptops

It is always a source of great interest to year 9 students at this time

of the year: “When will we be getting our laptops??” The laptops

SRC News The trivia night being organised by the RSL and the SRC to raise

purchase food for dinner. Teams are also welcome to bring along

nibbles for their table. Come along and try to beat both the students

and teachers from Dungog High.

Teams of eight are able to enter at a cost of $100 per team. In

order to book a table, contact Karen Daffy at the high school on

(02)4992 3022 or email [email protected]. At this stage

we are also seeking assistance in the form of donations that may be

used as prizes or auctioned on the night. If you can assist in this

way, contact Karen Daffy as soon as possible. We would like to

thank those people and businesses that have already made

donations.

In addition to the trivia night the SRC are also participating in the

James Theatre Stakes in March. There will be an SRC team

sponsored by Malcolm McDonald and a Year 12 team, led by Mrs

Wilson, sponsored by the SRC. The event is on Sunday, 4th March,

2012 at Bennett Park. It is a great day for all involved. The students

and teachers participating would appreciate any support they can

get. So come along and support one or both of the high school

teams.

Last week was Valentine’s Day. The SRC successfully delivered

roses, balloons and singing telegrams to many staff and students

throughout the day. This was the first time many of the SRC

representatives were involved in the organisation, so should be

congratulated for all of their efforts.

Careers News CONSTRUCTION INDUCTION COURSE

Year 10 students wishing to actively participate in Work Experience

in the Building and Construction Industry must complete a

Construction Induction Training Course (“White Card”). This is a

legal requirement. Students in Year 11 who are enrolled in

Construction (VET) must also have completed this course.

A course will be run at the School by an approved WorkCover

trainer on Monday 2 April. The cost is $80. A maximum of 20

students can attend. A second course will run in Term 2 only if there

is sufficient demand.

Permission notes are not required. Students are to pay at the Office.

PDHPE-CAPA Dept. Welcome back to 2012! We are looking forward to lots of great

things happening in the PDHPE-CAPA department this year. Events

that are coming up include: Art Excursion to the Picasso Exhibition,

‘The Stones’ performance for all Year 9 and 10 (more information

about that, next term) – funded by the P & C, our Sunsafe

Campaign launch, various music performances, Starstruck auditions

and various inclass activities.

Students need to ensure that they are bringing their laptops (Years

9-12) and workbooks to class, wearing appropriate uniform for

practical PDHPE lessons, being sunsmart when outside and

keeping up to date with all their classwork and assessments.

We have created a PDHPE page and CAPA page on the school

website. If you go to the Subject Information Tab and click on it,

within that are pages relating to the different year groups in PDHPE

and the CAPA areas of Music, Visual Art and Drama. We hope to

provide information relevant to topics being studied, expectations,

assessment tasks, excursions and other useful information

surrounding our subject areas. It is a work in progress, but please

check it out and see what topics we are covering in PDHPE and

when the assessment tasks are coming up. Let us know if you have

any ideas of what would be useful/helpful to have on there.

2012 Sunsafe Initiative

This year we are making sun safety a priority in PDHPE lessons.

Although we have always encouraged the wearing of hats,

sunglasses and sunscreen, we have decided with the support of the

SRC, Executive and P & C to increase the responsibility taken by

students with their own health in relation to sun safety. As well as

learning about risks associated with being out in the sun, in our

outside PDHPE lessons (and possibly sport as well), students will

be given raffle tickets if they are wearing a hat and these will go into

a draw (which will be drawn each fortnight on assembly) for

fantastic prizes.

We always provide sunscreen for students and will be sourcing

some cost effective hats which provide appropriate sun protection,

which students will be able to purchase through the PDHPE Dept. if

they do not have one. As we do not have a hat as part of school

uniform, students are allowed to wear any hat. A hat with a wide

brim is preferred and provides better protection, however, a cap is

better than nothing.

Students should keep an eye out for the poster competition and hat

design competition which will form part of our initiative.

We hope that all students and their families get behind this initiative

in taking charge of their own health, taking preventative action to

reduce the incidence of skin cancer and damage from the sun.

Please take the time to read through the attached SunSmart

Factsheet from the Cancer Council.

Mrs M.Wilson
