Term 1 Week 5 20th February 2012
Principal SRC and Year 12 show initiative
Congratulations to the year 12 students and all who
assisted them to produce an excellent cake stall at
school on Wednesday. All profits from the sales will
be used to subsidise the special school jackets they
have selected for this year. Each year 12 group is permitted to
choose a jumper or jacket that is special to them – it must be in
school colours and blend into the existing uniform. This year’s group
have selected a jacket that is very smart; it is a little more expensive
than the usual jumper, and so they are working to help everyone
afford the additional cost. Well done to you all!
Congratulations are also due to the SRC for their annual Valentine’s
Day rose presentations. Many roses were delivered to students and
staff on Tuesday the 14th and many tuneful (or not) songs and
verses proclaimed. This is always a fun day that allows the SRC to
do some fundraising for school improvements or donations to
charities. Again, very well done for a smoothly organised and
efficient day that brought smiles to many faces.
Year 9 Laptops
It is always a source of great interest to year 9 students at this time
of the year: “When will we be getting our laptops??” The laptops
have arrived in school and are currently being prepared by Mr Troy
Smith, the Technical support Officer (TSO). It is his job to maintain
the fleet of devices that we now have – around 350 laptops.
Before any student can be given a laptop, parents must sign a
Charter that details each student’s responsibility in using and caring
for the device. It is very important that parents understand why the
laptops are made available, how they should be managed and what
happens if the device is damaged. I will hold a meeting to cover this
and other aspects of laptop use; the Charter will be explained and
distributed to parents at the meeting
The meeting will be held on Wednesday March 7th at 5.00pm in
the school library and should take around one hour.
Parents will also be able to ask questions about the Melbourne
excursion at this meeting.
Trivia Night
A reminder: the Trivia Night to raise funds toward sending a DHS
student to the ANZAC Day ceremony at Gallipoli in 2015 will be held
at the Dungog RSL on Saturday night, February 25th. Join with
friends to make it a great night.
P&C Meeting
Thanks to the parents who attended the first P&C meeting of the
year last Thursday. The P&C is a vital part of the school and allows
parents and staff to share ideas that will help our school and
students. Please consider coming to meetings to give your point of
view on your child’s education.

Vaccinations This year students in both Year 7 and Year 10 will be offered free
vaccinations. These vaccinations will happen in three rounds, with
Year 7 being immunised on all three days and Year 10 on the first of
these days.
The first of these rounds will occur on Wednesday, 29th February,
2012. Notes and information packs will be sent home this week for
parents to read. The packs will need to be filled out and returned to
Miss Daffy prior to the day if parents wish their children to receive
any of the immunisations.
The immunisations being offered this year are:
Year 7: Chicken pox, Diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough
and Hepatitis B for boys and girls and Human papilloma virus for the
girls.
Year 10: Diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough for both boys
and girls
Sports News The sun came out just in time last Thursday and the fields dried
out enough for all of our sports to run ahead as normal. Let’s hope
this Thursday is just as kind to us. Congratulations to the following
students for doing their personal best at sport last week: Joshua
Poole, Amanda Clarke, Jack Ryan-Collins, Jacob Blanch, Jarod
Fordham, Nick Jones, Lauren Snedden, Alanna Peacock, Daniel
Holmes, Kadin Lutton, Ashleigh Thornton and Bryce Lloyd.
Last Thursday also saw our Open Boys volleyball team travel to
Newcastle where they did themselves and DHS proud. The boys
have been training hard at lunchtimes with Mr Francey and Mr
Corcoran and by all accounts they gave the competition a really
good shake.
The Port Stephens Zone swimming carnival was held yesterday at
Tomaree Aquatic Centre and once again our swimmers did
themselves proud. More information on their results in next week’s
newsletter. A big thank you to Jenny Denniss and Peter Maytom for
all their support.
Our Age Champions from the DHS swimming carnival have been
presented on last week’s assembly. Congratulations to the following
swimmers: Laura Inwood (12yr girls), Ellie Wallace, Lara Hayden
(13yr girls), Ian Parsons (13yr boys), Emma Rumbel (14yr girls),
Jordan Long (14yr boys), Aimee Robinson (15yr girls), Corey Smith
(15yr boys), Rhianon Denniss (16yr girls), Joshua Long (16yr boys),
Emily Muddle (17yr girls) and Andrew Muddle (17yr boys). Well
done!

SRC News The trivia night being organised by the RSL and the SRC to raise

approaching. It is on this Saturday, 25th February, 2012 at 7:00 pm.
The snack bar will be open and those attending will be able to

purchase food for dinner. Teams are also welcome to bring along
nibbles for their table. Come along and try to beat both the students
and teachers from Dungog High.
Teams of eight are able to enter at a cost of $100 per team. In
order to book a table, contact Karen Daffy at the high school on
(02)4992 3022 or email [email protected]. At this stage
we are also seeking assistance in the form of donations that may be
used as prizes or auctioned on the night. If you can assist in this
way, contact Karen Daffy as soon as possible. We would like to
thank those people and businesses that have already made
donations.
In addition to the trivia night the SRC are also participating in the
James Theatre Stakes in March. There will be an SRC team
sponsored by Malcolm McDonald and a Year 12 team, led by Mrs
Wilson, sponsored by the SRC. The event is on Sunday, 4th March,
2012 at Bennett Park. It is a great day for all involved. The students
and teachers participating would appreciate any support they can
get. So come along and support one or both of the high school
teams.
Last week was Valentine’s Day. The SRC successfully delivered
roses, balloons and singing telegrams to many staff and students
throughout the day. This was the first time many of the SRC
representatives were involved in the organisation, so should be
congratulated for all of their efforts.
Careers News CONSTRUCTION INDUCTION COURSE
Year 10 students wishing to actively participate in Work Experience
in the Building and Construction Industry must complete a
Construction Induction Training Course (“White Card”). This is a
legal requirement. Students in Year 11 who are enrolled in
Construction (VET) must also have completed this course.
A course will be run at the School by an approved WorkCover
trainer on Monday 2 April. The cost is $80. A maximum of 20
students can attend. A second course will run in Term 2 only if there
is sufficient demand.
Permission notes are not required. Students are to pay at the Office.
PDHPE-CAPA Dept. Welcome back to 2012! We are looking forward to lots of great
things happening in the PDHPE-CAPA department this year. Events
that are coming up include: Art Excursion to the Picasso Exhibition,
‘The Stones’ performance for all Year 9 and 10 (more information
about that, next term) – funded by the P & C, our Sunsafe
Campaign launch, various music performances, Starstruck auditions
and various inclass activities.
Students need to ensure that they are bringing their laptops (Years
9-12) and workbooks to class, wearing appropriate uniform for
practical PDHPE lessons, being sunsmart when outside and
keeping up to date with all their classwork and assessments.
We have created a PDHPE page and CAPA page on the school
website. If you go to the Subject Information Tab and click on it,
within that are pages relating to the different year groups in PDHPE
and the CAPA areas of Music, Visual Art and Drama. We hope to
provide information relevant to topics being studied, expectations,
assessment tasks, excursions and other useful information
surrounding our subject areas. It is a work in progress, but please
check it out and see what topics we are covering in PDHPE and
when the assessment tasks are coming up. Let us know if you have
any ideas of what would be useful/helpful to have on there.
2012 Sunsafe Initiative
This year we are making sun safety a priority in PDHPE lessons.
Although we have always encouraged the wearing of hats,
sunglasses and sunscreen, we have decided with the support of the
SRC, Executive and P & C to increase the responsibility taken by
students with their own health in relation to sun safety. As well as
learning about risks associated with being out in the sun, in our
outside PDHPE lessons (and possibly sport as well), students will
be given raffle tickets if they are wearing a hat and these will go into
a draw (which will be drawn each fortnight on assembly) for
fantastic prizes.
We always provide sunscreen for students and will be sourcing
some cost effective hats which provide appropriate sun protection,
which students will be able to purchase through the PDHPE Dept. if
they do not have one. As we do not have a hat as part of school
uniform, students are allowed to wear any hat. A hat with a wide
brim is preferred and provides better protection, however, a cap is
better than nothing.
Students should keep an eye out for the poster competition and hat
design competition which will form part of our initiative.
We hope that all students and their families get behind this initiative
in taking charge of their own health, taking preventative action to
reduce the incidence of skin cancer and damage from the sun.
Please take the time to read through the attached SunSmart
Factsheet from the Cancer Council.
