Prospective  buyers  are  advised  that

coloured gemstones  and diamonds may be

industry.  For  example,  heating  of  coloured

gemstones  is  an  accepted  method  of

enhancement and is generally considered to

Methods of enhancement that may be used

on various gemstones include:  dyeing, laser

drilling,  irradiating,  bleaching,  oiling,  filling,

coating,  faceting  and  polishing.  unless  the

catalogue description  specifically  states  that

prospective bidders should assume that some

form of treatment may have been used and

In  1735,  Jehan-Jacques  blancpain  founded  the

brand  bearing  his  name,  which  is  now  the

world's oldest watchmaking brand, and, with a

focus on  traditional watch movements, contin-

ues to feature the skills of the watchmaker.

In 1926, the manufacture started marketing the

first  automatic  wristwatch.  by  1930,  blancpain

adapted  the  system  to  watches  of  small  size,

and  launched  the  world's  first  women’s  auto-

matic watch.

One of blancpain’s most popular models is the

Fifty  Fathoms,  launched  in  1953.  Worn  by

Jacques-yves cousteau, among others. The Fifty

Descending from an ancient family of Greek sil-

versmiths, Sotirio bulgari founded the company

in  1881, manufacturing  precious  silver  objects.

During the late 19th century, Sotirio moved to

In  1905, with  the  help  of  his  sons costantino

and  Giorgio,  he  inaugurated  the  shop  in  Via

In  the  early  20th  century  the  two  brothers

developed a deep interest and expertise in pre-

cious  stones,  jewels  and  watches.  The  period

immediately  after  the  Second  World  War

marked an important turning point in the histo-

ry of bulgari. Giorgio and costantino decided to

create a unique style inspired by Greco-Roman

classicism, the Italian Renaissance, and the 19th

century Roman school. by  the 1950’s-60’s,  the

bold and  innovative style of bulgari had gained

success within the jet set and movie world, and

they focused on jewels with precious gems.

In 1977 bulgari launched the bVLGaRI watch, a

The youngest son of a Swiss family, Toni cavelti

served a long apprenticeship in the goldsmith's

trade,  developing  a  magical  skill  in  jewellery

design. at the age of 23, equipped with only $8,

the tools of his  trade and a romantic vision of

the  canadian West,  he  arrived  in  Vancouver.

There he made his fortune by creating fine jew-

Queen. In 1971 he was commissioned to make

a necklace of b.c. gold and local jade to mark a

The  J12,  chanel’s  ceramic  sport  watch  was

introduced in 2000, and immediately became a

The history of chaumet dates back to 1780 and

is closely interwoven with the history of France.

The wedding of Napoleon and  Josephine,  and

later  with  the  archduchess  Marie-Louise  de

Habsburg-Lorraine,  niece  of  Queen  Marie-

antoinette, brought chaumet numerous sump-

tuous  orders.  chaumet  became  the  most

famous jeweller in europe and built up a presti-

gious clientele.

Inspired by  the enchantment of nature,  Joseph

chaumet  established  himself  as  the  absolute

Master of  the belle  epoque.   With  his  elegant

creations,  he  attracted  royals  and  aristocrats.

aigrettes  and  tiaras  became  a  very  important

part  of  the  firm’s  designs.  chaumet  has  pro-

duced  more  than  1,500  different  models  of

tiaras.

chaumet  created  simplified  designs  contained

within rigid geometric outlines of the art Deco

period in the 1920’s and 30’s.

Responding to the continuous social, economic

and artistic changes, chaumet has maintained its

legendary  reputation. Design  is  determined  by

the good taste of the contemporary Parisienne,

always in search of something new, different and

sumptuous.

shape in jewels of all sizes and varieties. almost

all of his  iconic animal  jewelry was designed  in

the  1960s.  The  times  were  changing  and  he

led to a focus on the study of gemmology, and

the  establishment  of  a  specialty  gemmological

laboratory under the same name.  For genera-

which is a work of art itself, displaying the works

of the jeweller’s art within.

MauRIce LacROIx

Founded in the 1970’s, Maurice Lacroix is rela-

tively young among Swiss Watchmakers, but has

established  a  solid  reputation  as  an  important

developer of timekeeping innovations and com-

plications.

With  a  combination  of  horological  innovation,

modern  materials,  and  cutting  edge  design,

Maurice  Lacroix  produces  timepieces  that  are

instant classics.

MOVaDO

Movado is a name derived from the internation-

al  esperanto  language,  meaning  “always  in

motion”, and was given to this watch company

in  1905.  Known  for  innovation  in  design,

Movado’s most  famous watch,  now  known  as

the “Movado Museum watch”, featuring a sim-

ple  dial  with  a  gold  dot  at  12: 00,  was  intro-

duced in 1947. This classic design is timeless and

is as current today as it was in the first half of the

20th century.

MIKIMOTO

Kokichi  Mikimoto,  the  father  of  the  cultured

pearl  industry,  was  the  first  to  patent  the

process for culturing pearls. Prior to culturing of

pearls  in  the  early  20th  century,  pearls  were

accidents of nature, and were only available to a

very select few due to their rarity. Pearl markets

were  revolutionized  with  Mikimoto’s  patent,

and made pearls available to a wider audience.

Mikimoto is associated with only the very finest

pearls. Traditionally, only 5% of pearls cultured

in Japan are of a quality that can be sold inter-

nationally,  and  Mikimoto  only  selects  the  top

grades of those to sell under their name.

NaRDI

In the 1920s Giulio Nardi  founded Nardi  in St

Mark’s Square in Venice. among its most sought

after  jewels were  the  “blackamoor”  brooches

inspired  by  Othello,  “ the  Moor  of  Venice”,

commander  of  the  Venetian  Fleet.,  and  while

they  were  originally  sold  as  souvenirs,  they

quickly became more complex and sophisticat-

ed  jewels  through  the  1930’s,  and  these  have

been highly sought after.

Nardi  jewels have been seen in the collections

of  many  celebrities  including  elizabeth  Taylor

and Grace Kelly.

LecOuLTRe

antoine  Lecoultre  founded  his  workshop  in

1833.    Lecoultre  created watch parts  of  such

perfection  that no  tool could detect variations

between them.

by  1847,  Lecoultre  had  introduced  a  keyless

winding system for watches, simplifying watches

for  all  future  generations.   The Lecoultre 145

calibre, produced from 1907 until the 1960s in

some  400  copies,  was  only  1.38  mm  thick,

which made it the flattest mechanism of its time.

In 1929, Le coultre produced the world’s small-

est watch movement, the calibre 101 weighed

barely one gram and had 74 parts. For her coro-

nation in 1953, Queen elizabeth II wore a watch

fitted with this mechanism.

In  1931,  a  swivel  system  made  the  Reverso

practical and also an art Deco classic. It is cur-

rently one of the most iconic models  in luxury

watchmaking.   Innovative  in precision in manu-

facturing  and  purity  of  design,  Lecoultre

( Jaeger-Lecoultre) remains a centre of the lux-

ury watch industry.

LOuIS VuITTON

at the age of sixteen, Louis Vuitton decided to

become  a  trunk  maker.    Luggage  remains  a

mainstay of  the company since  its  inception  in

1859.    No  longer  focused  on  hard  sided  lug-

gage,  travel  is  different,  and  Louis  Vuitton  has

kept up with  fashion, producing  items  that are

the essence of  luxury, beautifully made, and of

the finest materials.

Jewels  bearing  the  Vuitton  logo  or  name  go

back to the origins of the brand, with the iconic

logo,  or  the  form  of  small  cases  in  precious

metal and gems, as in the bag charms featured

in this sale.

OMeGa

Louis  brandt  started  his  business  in  1848,  the

genesis of what would become OMeGa as we

now know  it.  Some models have been  to  the

moon and back with apollo astronauts, as well

as  on  the  wrists  of  kings,  queens,  presidents,

explorers and visionaries.

Famous for the six lunar landings, the first diver’s

watch  and  the  world’s  only  certified  marine

chronometer  wristwatch,  the  company  holds

many  records  for accuracy. OMeGa has been

on the wrist of James bond ( 007) in every film

in  the  franchise  since  1995.  In  the  upcoming

winter  Games  OMeGa  will  serve  as  Official

Timekeeper of the Olympic Games for the 26th

time.

OScaR HeyMaN

Oscar  Heyman’s  founding  brothers  trained  in

the rigorous workshops of Fabergé before leav-

ing eastern europe  for New york  in 1906. at

the  company’s  inception  in  1912,  there  were

three brothers, Nathan, Oscar and Harry, who

brought with them not only their rarified skills,

but an abiding passion for gemstones and an old

world  approach  to  gracious  customer  service.

The company has produced  jewels  for  several

prestigious  jewellery  firms,  including  Marcus  &

co., Shreve & co., and cartier. Their pieces are

often not signed.

The  Heyman  family  has  run  the  company  for

three generations, with each generation impart-

ing centuries old skills and technical know-how

to the next. Today, members of the second and

third generation work side by side with dedicat-

ed and skilled employees who continue to cre-

ate jewelry of the highest standards for connois-

seurs of the twenty-first century.

PaTeK PHILIPPe

On May  1st,  1839  businessman  antoni  Patek

and watchmaker François czapek joined forces

to found " Patek, czapek & cie"  in Geneva.   In

1844, Patek met the French watchmaker, Jean-

adrien  Philippe  in  Paris  where  the  latter  pre-

sented his pioneering stem winding and setting

system by the crown. When czapek decided to

leave, the company name changed to " Patek &

cie" . Later, in 1851 when adrien Philippe offi-

cially  became  associated with  the  company,  it

was  renamed  " Patek  Philippe  &  cie" ,  before

changing  once  more  in  1901  to  " ancienne

Manufacture d’Horlogerie Patek Philippe & cie,

S.a." .   In 1932, the company was purchased by

two brothers, charles and Jean Stern, owners of

a fine dial factory in Geneva. Since then, " Patek

Philippe S.a."  remains a family owned firm.

Patek Philippe is one of the most highly respect-

ed names in timepieces, and continues to pro-

duce  extraordinary  and  complicated  watches,

desired by collectors around the world.

PIaGeT

In 1874, in La côte-aux-Fées, a small Swiss vil-

lage  Georges  Édouard  Piaget  started  his  first

workshop on the family farm and devoted him-

self  to  making  high-precision  movements  that

he soon began supplying to the most prestigious

brands.

In  1943,  the  company  made  a  decision  that

from  then on,  the movement  factory  from La

côte-aux-Fées produced watches signed by and

sold under its own name.

In  1957,  Piaget  began  to  design  and  build  the

ultra-thin  movements,  and  by  1960,  Piaget

launched  the  world’s  thinnest  self-winding

movement. It measured just 2.3 mm thick.

In 1979,  they  launched  the Piaget Polo watch.

avant-garde, yet classic enough never to go out

of  style,  it  quickly  became  an  icon  that  was

adopted by the international jet set.

Piaget  fuses  technique  and  design  now  more

than ever in jewellery and watchmaking.

POMeLLaTO

Pomellato  is  an  Italian  jewellery  design  house

established in the year 1967. Known for distinc-

tive  use  of  coloured  gemstones  in  gold,

Pomellato produces styles like no other. Known

for its reach to the arts world, recent Pomellato

collections  have  featured  Tilda  Swinton  as  a

model.

ReNaTO cIPuLLO

Italian  born,  and  New  york  based,  Renato

cipullo  was  one  of  five  children  of  Giuseppe

cipullo, all born in Naples, in a street called Via

degli  Orefici,  Jeweler’s  Street.  The  family  has

jewellery  in  its  DNa,  and  all  followed  their

father into the jewellery world.

Renato cipullo continues in the family tradition,

designing fine jewelry, watches, and accessories

at his New york location.

RObeRTO cOIN

based in Vicenza, Italy’s most famous gold jew-

ellery  city,  the Roberto coin brand was  intro-

duced in 1996, after 19 years of manufacturing

under  house  names  for  other  important  jew-

ellery  brands. Often  containing  a  secret  signa-

ture  ruby,  Roberto  coin  jewels  are  regularly

sought  by  consumers  at  prestige  jewellers

around the world.

ROLex

In 1905, at the age of 24, Hans Wilsdorf found-

ed a company in London specializing in the dis-

tribution of timepieces. Wristwatches were not

Page 190: Dupuis Fall 2014 Jewels Auction

very  precise  at  the  time,  but  Hans  Wilsdorf

foresaw  that  they  could become not only  ele-

gant, but also reliable.

To  convince  the  public  of  the  reliability  of  his

timepieces, he equipped each watch with small,

very  precise  movements  manufactured  by  a

Swiss watchmaking company in bienne.

Rolex  first  concentrated  on  the  quality  of  the

movements.  The  relentless  quest  for  chrono-

metric precision rapidly led to success. In 1910,

a  Rolex watch was  the  first wristwatch  in  the

world  to  receive  the  Swiss  certificate  of

chronometric Precision, granted by the Official

Watch Rating centre in bienne.

Four  years  later,  in  1914,  Kew Observatory  in

Great  britain  awarded  a  Rolex  wristwatch  a

class “a” precision certificate, a distinction that

until that point in time had been reserved exclu-

sively for marine chronometers. From that date

forward, the Rolex wristwatch was synonymous

with precision.

Rolex moved to Geneva, a city renowned inter-

nationally for watchmaking. Montres Rolex S.a.

was  registered  in  Geneva  in  1920.  Since  that

time, Rolex has become one of the most wide-

ly recognized watches in the world.

TIFFaNy & cO

Founded in New york in 1837 Tiffany remains

an  icon  to  jewellery  consumers  around  the

world. Known for innovation and high standards,

Tiffany  had  adopted  the  silver  standard  of

“925”,  and  95%  standard  for  platinum,  both

later adopted as uSa standards.  In 1886 Tiffany

introduced  its  iconic Tiffany setting providing a

light and open setting to best display a diamond.

constantly working to bring the latest in design

innovations  to  its  offerings,  Tiffany  regularly

brings  designers  to  its  clients;   in  1956,  Jean

Schlumberger  joined and  in  the  famous annual

“blue book” of 1974-75, elsa Peretti was intro-

duced. Paloma Picasso was first featured in 1980

and  architect  Frank Gehry  has  designed many

current offerings.

Drawing on the natural world, the company was

early on recognized as a master of art Nouveau

and  the  arts  and  crafts  movement.  Through

the decades it has remained at the forefront of

design, noted for the use of exceptional materi-

als and unwavering standards.

TISSOT

Founded  by  charles-emile  Tissot,  in  1853,

Tissot  is  an  internationally  known Swiss watch

brand.

Known for timepiece inspiration throughout  its

history, Tissot introduced the first anti-magnetic

movement  in  1930,  and  in  1971,  brought  out

the astrolon, the first plastic mechanical move-

ment  and  case,  anticipating  the  Swatch  by  a

decade.    Through  the  1980’s,  Tissot  explored

fun and unusual watch case materials, with the

pearl  watch,  the  rock  watch,  and  the  wood

watch.

In the late 1990’s, Tissot brought the first touch

screen watch to the market, with the “T” touch

series,  allowing  access  to  numerous  functions

with the touch of the finger on the watch crys-

tal.

Tissot remains an important name in the watch

world, and has produced many innovations and

timeless classics.

VacHeRON cONSTaNTIN

Jean-Marc Vacheron founded Vacheron in 1755

and his son and grandson eventually succeeded

him  in  the  family  business.  In  1819,  François

constantin  joined  as  a  partner,  and  the  name

changed  to  Vacheron  &  constantin,  only  in

1970 changing to Vacheron constantin.

an  innovator  in  the  technical  aspects  of  the

timepiece,  Vacheron  constantin  has  remained

among the most sought after brands in the mar-

ket.

VaN cLeeF & aRPeLS

Van cleef & arpels has always been inspired by

the  unique  creative  energy  of  love,  for  it  was

love which brought the Maison into being.

Towards the end of the 19th century, a young

girl  named  estelle  arpels  –  the  daughter  of  a

dealer  in precio  us  stones – met  a boy named

alfred Van cleef, the son of a stone-cutter.

This  led  them  to  founding  the Maison  of  Van

cleef & arpels.  In 1906, alfred set up  in busi-

ness  with  estelle’s  brother  charles,  a  talented

salesman who managed  their new boutique  in

Paris’ Place Vendôme. Two years later, estelle’s

brother  Julien  joined  the  firm; a  third  brother,

Louis, joined them in 1912.

Over  the  years  that  followed,  the  name  Van

cleef  &  arpels  became  synonymous  with  the

most exquisite jewellery in the world. With that

achievement,  the  love,  which  first  brought

estelle and alfred together, lives on to this day

through the many enchanting love stories of the

Maison.

Van cleef  & arpels  remains  one  of  the most

desired  names  in  jewellery,  noted  for  many

innovations  in  design,  manufacturing  and  gem

setting techniques which changed the jewellery

landscape and the way we think of jewellery.
