Acknowledgements

We would like to thank the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council for its financial support in the preparation of this manual.

We would also like to give special acknowledgements to Donald Pinchback, Durham County Chief Court Counselor, North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention (NCDJJDP), and all of the members of the Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) ad-hoc Committee for their guidance and feedback in helping to make this Resource Manual a reality.

The assistance provided by both Lieutenant David Addison of the Durham City Police Department and Sergeant Georgette O’Mary, School Resource Officer, of the Durham County Sheriff’s Department was also invaluable in helping us develop a useful reference for law enforcement officers, the schools and other Durham community agencies.

Special appreciation is also extended to Union County in North Carolina for sharing a copy of their DMC Advisory Board Resource Guide sponsored by the Governor’s Crime Commission (GCC) and US Department of Justice grant.

This Juvenile and Family Resource Manual was developed as a follow-up to a GCC grant award to the Juvenile Justice Institute (JJI) at North Carolina Central University. It is anticipated that if properly used this manual will divert inappropriate referrals, especially of minority youth, from the juvenile court to appropriate community agencies.

This Resource manual is available for use in three versions for quick and easy reference:

• A pocket version for law enforcement officers • A desk top or pocket version for schools and community agencies • An electronic version for the community at-large and as a state-wide resource

The electronic version will be found at the Juvenile Justice Institute website (www.ncjji.org) and also on the Durham County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council’s Facebook page.

Updates to the manual will be made available from The Juvenile Justice Institute, semi-annually.

If you are currently viewing this manual, we hope you find it helpful in locating services available for youth in the Durham community.

All questions about this manual should be directed to the Juvenile Justice Institute; the Department of Criminal Justice, North Carolina Central University. Inquiries can be made via e-mail: [email protected] or by telephone: 919.530.7092.
