Did you change your Medicare or Medicare Advantage plan last fall?
I just received this update from the Executive Office of Elder Affairs about problems people are facing because of changes they made to their Medicare plan. Were your prescription costs much higher than expected?
Are your bills much higher than anticipated? Don’t be trapped into paying more than you should! Please know that Medicare has acknowledged that some people may have “made the wrong plan choice because of inaccurate information from the new Plan Finder website.” They advise you to call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) and explain your situation. The Call Center representatives can help you throughout the year with options for making changes. If you would like to research your options before making that call, you can talk with a SHINE counselor by calling 1-800-243-4636 or make an appointment with our new SHINE COUNSELOR Alan Rosenberg. He will be scheduling appointments on Wednesdays. If you would like to schedule an appointment, please call the front desk at 781-934-5774, ext. 5703.

The Duxbury Senior Center is commencing a “Memoir Writing Course” (short stories) this summer and is focusing on 4 categories of seniors. One of which is Veterans. It is not necessary to write about your military experience but if you choose, some subjects worth consideration are; being patriotic, boot camp, our flag, your service, family impact while deployed, best duty station, post service issues and many others. Look for more information on page 17. We look forward to your participation. The VA has developed a listing of sites outside of Vietnam that Agent Orange herbicide was used. For a listing go to VA.gov and in the search window enter “Agent Orange sites outside of Vietnam”.
Speaking of Agent Orange, the VA is now accepting claims for “Blue water Navy” Veterans who served off of Vietnam and may have been exposed. See me if you want to file a claim.
A bill to help thousands of Korean-American Veterans has been introduced. These Veterans who are naturalized citi-zens may become eligible for VA healthcare. These Veterans who served in the Korean military along side the United States have not been recognized. South Korea considers them as foreign nationals and their access to benefits is lim-ited. Over 325.000 have served.
The VA offers an urgent care benefit that provides eligible Veterans with greater choice and access to timely care. Ur-gent care providers treat injuries and illnesses that require immediate attention, but are not life-threatening. When using the urgent care benefit, Veterans must go to an urgent care provider in the VA’s network. Upon arriving the Veterans must state that they are using the urgent care benefit. Minuteclinics in the local area and others provide this type of care. For a complete listing go to: https://vaurgentcarelocator.triwest.com/
The VA is struggling implementing the Mission Act which allows Veterans who have access to VA healthcare the op-portunity to use outside/local providers rather than VA facilities. You need approval to use this service from you VA primary provider. If the services are available from the VA you may have to use them. Currently wait times are long for appointments in order to obtain approval.
Contact the Veterans’ Service Officer for Duxbury, located at the Senior Center, 781-934-5774 ext. 5740.
