    Dyco, Inc., is a leading manuacurer and inegraor o urnkey conainer-handling sysems.The company had hisorically uilized AuoCAD2D design ools o develop is cusomizedmachines, many o which comprise assemblies o 6,000 individual componens, no couningan even larger number o nus, bols, washers, and aseners. Dycos engineers ransiionedo he Auodesk Invenor3D CAD sysem in 2000, parly o implemen modular 3D designmehods and parly o ake advanage o atracive upgrade pricing. Bu afer using Invenorsofware or nearly six years, hey became dissaisfied wih he CAD sysems perormance,according o Engineering Manager Doug Gordner.

    We experienced perormance issues, and were no able o add hardware o our models,Gordner recalls. Some o our assemblies were acually muliplying he number o pars;and in oher insances, our engineers had o spli large assembly files ino wo or hreesubassemblies o avoid sysem crashes, reezes, and oher perormance problems. Wewere never able o add hardware like bols and lock washers because o he slowdown inperormance. In 2005, we decided o reassess our 3D CAD soluion.

    Over a six-monh period, Dyco conduced horough evaluaions o he Invenor,Pro/ENGINEER, and SolidWorks3D CAD sofware sysems. Following ha assessmen,he company acquired a rial sea o SolidWorks sofware, and used i or wo monhs oconfirm is findings ha SolidWorks sofware provided he superior soluion.     Faster design, easier design changesSince implemening SolidWorks sofware, Dyco has cu some o is CAD modeling ime inhal, and compressed is produc developmen cycles by 25 o 50 percen. Gordner atribueshese produciviy gains o an easier-o-use, beter-perorming CAD sysem and o he useo assembly configuraions in SolidWorks sofware, which makes i aser and easier oimplemen design changes.

    We have experienced subsanial improvemen in assembly perormance, Gordner noes.We are close o wice as as a modeling on some o our sysems in SolidWorks sofware,

    and can more efficienly handle even our larges machines and assemblies, and eel weshould be able o include all o he associaed hardware.

    I is also a lo aser and simpler o make design changes in SolidWorks sofware becausewe use design configuraions, Gordner adds. Whenever we need o cusomize an order, suchas changing a debagging machine o handle a 12-inch raher han a 10-inch botle, or designinghe botle discharge or he lef side insead o he righ side, we can use configuraions ocusomize and change hings more quickly.

    Advancing design qualityBy moving o SolidWorks sofware, Dyco has reduced he number o errors in is sysemdesigns. The companys engineers use SolidWorks Simulaion o validae he srucuralperormance o componens, shee-meal design ools o reduce he poenial or abricaion

    errors, design configuraions o heighen he accuracy o design modificaions, and 3DConenCenralo download accurae, manuacurer-cerified models o commonly usedcomponens.

    Some o our machines are 90 percen shee meal, and i is a lo easier and more accuraeo use SolidWorks sofware or shee-meal design, explains Gordner. We also reduce hepoenial or errors by using design configuraions o make design changes. Now when weneed o make a change, such as using a differen moor, gearbox, or hole-mouning patern,insead o increasing he chances or error by making changes o so many differen assemblyversions, we only need o change he configuraion in SolidWorks sofware.

    Improved design data management, communication

    By ransiioning o SolidWorks sofware, Dyco has realized improvemens in hemanagemen and communicaion o design daa. Raher han using WindowsExplorerolders o manage design daa, Dyco uses inegraed SolidWorks Workgroup PDM sofwareo improve he handling, securiy, and adminisraion o produc design daa. The company isalso using eDrawings files o drive machine assembly and suppor user documenaion.

    We used o give our assembly personnel a 3D prin, bu now we have five compuer saionson our assembly line, and use eDrawings files o provide deailed insrucions or building ourmachines, Gordner poins ou. We have also sared puting eDrawings on CD and ino ouruser manuals o improve he communicaion o mainenance, repair, and service inormaiono our cusomers.
