HOUSTON DYNAMO vs TORONTO FC BBVA COMPASS STADIUM, Houston, Texas

June 20, 2012 (WEEK 16, MLS Game #132) 8 p.m. CT (TSN/RDS; FS-H+; Multimedios) The Houston Dynamo will be looking to keep their home record intact when they meet Toronto FC in a midweek encounter at BBVA Compass Stadium. The Dynamo are still unbeaten in league play in their new ground, following a 2-1 win in the Texas derby against FC Dallas over the weekend. TFC opened the Paul Mariner coaching era with a 10th loss in 11 league starts, opening their road swing with a 2-0 loss at Sporting Kansas City. REFEREE: Baldomero Toledo. Houston’s 2-0 victory in the final meeting between at Robertson Stadium, last July 9, was the Dynamo’s first vs. TFC since 2009. Toronto FC had won two in a row vs. Houston after two draws.

Toronto FC have never lost to Houston at BMO Field, with two victories and three draws in five meetings all-time in Ontario.

Coaches record: Dominic Kinnear vs. TOR: P10 W3 L3 D4 … Paul Mariner vs. HOU: first game HOUSTON DYNAMO The Houston Dynamo remained undefeated in league play in their new home, defeating FC Dallas 2-1 on Saturday evening at BBVA Compass Stadium. The Dynamo are in a tie for fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 19 points from 13 games. LAST MATCH

The Dynamo took the lead in just the third minute. An attempted clear of a Calen Carr cross by FCD defender Hernan Pertuz found Will Bruin’s knee in the penalty area and the deflection flew past goalkeeper Kevin Hartman.

But FCD found the equalizer in the 59th minute. Some sterling build-up play saw an attempted shot blocked in the heart of the area -- but the fortunate carom fell to Jackson, who fired home with style.

The game took an ugly turn in the 63rd minute. Dallas left back Jair Benitez elbowed Colin Clark to draw a straight red from referee Jair Marrufo, his third expulsion against Houston in three years.

The sending off gave the Dynamo they advantage they needed to get back on the front foot. They got it two minutes later when Hartman flapped at a Brad Davis corner kick and the ball fell to Adam Moffat, who drove the ball into the roof of the goal.

Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear made three changes to the team that crashed to a 3-1 defeat by Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place. Jermaine Taylor, Geoff Cameron and Je-Vaughn Watson all returned from international duty, coming into the team for Warren Creavalle, Nathan Sturgis and Luiz Camargo.

game homestand with the Toronto match. “We had a little bit of good play to start the second half and then with the red card it was kind of one-way

traffic,” said Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear. “The most important thing is the result and we won the game tonight so for that I’m very pleased.”

Will Bruin scored his first goal of the season at home – after five goals on the road – to send the Dynamo on their way in their 2-1 win against FC Dallas.

“I was actually giving Will some crap. I told him, ‘You’ve got two goals off of the back of your head, a deflection off your shin and two missed breakaways,’ so we were just giving him crap,” said midfielder Brad Davis. “But I think for a forward a goal is a goal and anytime you can get your guys on the scoresheet it helps their confidence. It also helps the team and it certainly did tonight.”

Bruin’s six goals are now one more than he had in his rookie season last year, four of which came in the first seven games of 2011.

“I think it was a bit of a fortunate touch for Will [Bruin]. I like the way Will’s playing. I think also he’s probably a little bit faster than people give him credit for and he’s making good runs,” said Kinnear. “He’s keeping himself very dangerous and anticipating the game action and he’s been very good for us.”

The winning goal came from a corner kick, the fourth from a corner this season by Houston, most in MLS. “It was a fantastic win. We are a little bit disappointed that we them stay in the game longer than we should

have. It was pretty open in the first half but again we showed great fight to get that goal,” said Adam Moffat. “The guys kept battling and obviously the red card sort of changed it. We realized we need the three points here and I was happy to get that winning goal.”

TORONTO FC Toronto FC went down to defeat in their first game under new head coach Paul Mariner, suffering a 2-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday evening at Livestrong Sporting Park. TFC is in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, with three points from 11 games. LAST MATCH

Sporting took the lead after 18 minutes. Chance Myers sent a ball down the right flank to Jacob Peterson on the overlap. Peterson's cross slipped through two TFC defenders in the area, and C.J. Sapong pounced to hammer home on the half-turn from the center of the box.

SKC doubled their lead in the 35th minute. Graham Zusi sent in a corner kick from the left and Julio Cesar ripped it first-time from just outside the top right corner of the six-yard box into the roof of the net.

TFC head coach Paul Mariner made four changes to the team that recorded a 1-0 win against Philadelphia Union at BMO Field in the last game in charge for Aron Winter. Richard Eckersley, Terry Dunfield, Eric Avila and Danny Koevermans came into the side for Ashtone Morgan, Julian de Guzman, Luis Silva and Joao Plata.

TORONTO FC (4-4-2): Milos Kocic - Richard Eckersley, Doneil Henry, Adrian Cann (Ashtone Morgan 46), Jeremy Hall - Reggie Lambe (Julian de Guzman 62), Torsten Frings, Terry Dunfield, Eric Avila (Luis Silva 62) - Ryan Johnson, Danny Koevermans

TEAM NEWS The first game for Toronto FC under Paul Mariner ended the way nine of 10 games had with Aron Winter in

charge this season: a loss, falling 2-0 at Sporting Kansas City. “The team showed tremendous strength and character. I thought that the second half performance was

excellent,” said Mariner. “It was a game of two very different halves. We really took it to them. Obviously, we were a bit stretched because we were pushing to get two goals back, so we were a little vulnerable on the break.”

For his first game in charge, Mariner set out his team in his preferred 4-4-2 scheme, after Aron Winter mainly used 4-3-3 and 3-4-3 formations in his time as head coach.

“Obviously, it is going to take time to adjust to playing for a new coach and in a new formation, but everyone has a good mentality,” said defender Jeremy Hall. “It will take some time, but we are excited for the challenge.”

Torsten Frings and Terry Dunfield filled the central midfield axis, with Reggie Lambe and Eric Avila pushing forward from wide midfield spots.

“In the second half, we had our opportunities. It's just the little things,” said Avila. “We've only had a week to work with Paul (Mariner). He's been in this league. He knows what he’s doing. It's just tidying up the small things.”

At the hour mark, Mariner brought on Julian de Guzman and Luis Silva for Lambe and Avila.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

“We tried to weather the storm, but they were coming out in waves,” said Mariner. “We changed it slightly for the first 15 (minutes) of the second half and went a little bit higher with the guys out wide. After 60 minutes, we completely changed the system. It just wasn’t meant to be tonight.”

TFC have allowed multiple goals in eight of 11 league games this season – though they recorded shutouts in three of four Canadian Championship matches. They were shut out for the fourth time this season. “I lost count of the chances we had,” said Mariner. “I stopped at five but someone said we had seven.”

“We went one goal down, and then two goals down. A lot of teams in that situation would put their heads down and give up, but they didn’t,” Mariner said. “They rolled their sleeves up and I thought we did very well. I am very proud of the players. They were fantastic.

Wonderful vs. West: With Saturday’s 2‐1 win over FC Dallas, the Dynamo improved to 4‐2‐1 on the season against the

heralded Western Conference. Houston has wins against FC Dallas, LA Galaxy, San Jose and Chivas USA.

starting midfielder Je‐Vaughn Watson returned from national duty for Saturday’s match against FC Dallas after missing the

June 10 game at Vancouver. Geoff Cameron played the second half off USA’s 1‐1 draw at Guatemala on June 12. The center

back also played 90 minutes in a friendly vs. Scotland on May 26. It was Cameron’s third national team call‐up. Andre

Hainault was called in by Canada and played 90 minutes in a friendly vs. the U.S.  and 90 minutes in both of Canada’s

win over Guatemala and a 0‐0 draw vs. Antigua & Barbuda in a pair of qualifying matches. Taylor did not appear in any of

the three games for Jamaica.

Second Half Savants: The Dynamo are 3‐0‐4 in games in which they were tied at halftime and 2‐0 when leading at halftime,

for a perfect 5‐0‐4 mark when tied or leading at the break. Houston is 0‐4 when trailing at the interval.

Possession: Despite playing their first seven games on the road, the Dynamo have won the possession battle in 11 of 13

games on the season and had slim disadvantages in the others. Houston had a 54‐46% possession advantage against FC

Dallas on Saturday, 54% possession at Vancouver, 60% possession vs. LA, 62% at New England, 60% vs. Portland, 56% vs.

regional championship, including semifinal runs in the 2007 and 2008 Champions Cup tournaments. It is the first

75 assists for Davis: Dynamo midfielder Brad Davis recorded his 75th assist for the Dynamo in all competitions with his

corner kick that Andre Hainault headed in for the winning goal vs. the Galaxy on May 26. Davis is Houston’s all‐time assist

leader.

Ching climbing assist chart: Ching has 18 MLS regular season assists with the Dynamo. With his next assist, he will tie

Brian Mullan for second on the Dynamo all‐time list.

First Comeback Win: The Dynamo recorded a 2‐1 win on May 26 over the LA Galaxy for their first come‐from‐behind win

of the season. Prior to the Galaxy game, the Dynamo were 0‐3‐1 on the season when allowing the first goal of the game.

East Coast Bias: Beginning with tonight’s match against Toronto FC, the Dynamo will play their next 14 games against

teams in the Eastern Conference. Houston is 1‐2‐3 vs. the Eastern Conference, but five of those six games were played on

the road. The next time the Dynamo face a team from the Western Conference is Sept. 6, when they host Real Salt Lake.

Hainault’s game‐winners: Defender Andre Hainault’s 57th‐minute winner vs. the Galaxy on May 26 was his second game‐

winning goal of the season. Hainault buried a shot from 12 yards in the second minute of stoppage time on opening day, a

1‐0 win at Chivas USA on March 11, for his first game‐winner this season.

Daytime Dominance: Houston’s 3‐1 loss at Vancouver on June 10 was its first loss in a day game this season, with its record

dropping to 4‐1. The Dynamo have daytime wins over Chivas USA, San Jose, D.C. United and the Galaxy. The Dynamo are

0‐3‐4 at night, but six of the seven night games have been on the road. Houston has two more day games this season (July 28

at Toronto FC and Sept. 29 at Philadelphia).

Cameron’s streak ends: Geoff Cameron missed the May 26 game with the Galaxy while playing for the U.S. in its 5‐1 win

over Scotland. It was the first MLS game that Cameron missed since May 4, 2011 vs. Colorado. Prior to May 26, Cameron

had started and played full time in 40 consecutive matches (playoffs included), the longest streak among Houston field

players in team history. Cameron played 3,576 consecutive minutes in MLS play (playoffs included) before his latest

absence. In a similar feat, Brad Davis’ streak of 45 consecutive starts was broken at Chicago on April 15 due to a calf strain.

BBVA Compass Stadium opener: The Dynamo opened the 13th soccer‐specific stadium in Major League Soccer on May 12.

On a gorgeous, 82‐degree day in front of a sell‐out crowd of 22,039, the Dynamo honored past legends, including Wade

Barrett, Pat Onstad, Eddie Robinson and Craig Waibel in a pregame ceremony that included the unveiling of 2006 and

2007 MLS Cup championship banners. Brad Davis provided a signature opening moment, delivering a beautiful, curling 30‐

yard strike for the game‐winning goal in the 67th minute.

Clutch: Luiz Camargo’s 87th‐minute equalizer at New England on May 19 was Houston’s third late goal on the road this

season. Brian Ching’s equalizer in the 81st minute at Columbus on April 21 and Hainault’s game‐winner two minutes into

stoppage time at Chivas USA on March 11 were also reminiscent of 2011 for the Dynamo. Last year, Houston scored 14

goals in the final 15 minutes of games, the second most in MLS (Seattle).

1st for Camargo: Luiz Camargo’s equalizer in the 87th minute at New England on May 19 was his first MLS goal.

Ashe moves to second on franchise list: With his start on May 15 Portland, Corey Ashe played in his 137th MLS regular

season game to move to second on the Dynamo all‐time list, passing Brian Mullan and Pat Onstad.

Page 17: Dynamo vs. Toronto FC

Boswell Bicentennial: Bobby Boswell faced his former team (D.C. United) on May 12 for his 200th Major League Soccer

appearance in his eight‐year career. Boswell also made his 200th MLS start vs. the Galaxy on May 26. The central defender

has been very consistent in his career, averaging 27.4 games per season and has played every minute of every match in 2012.

Boswell has played at least 23 games in each season and has played full time in 23 consecutive MLS matches (playoffs

included) dating to Sept. 14, 2011 at Columbus.

Carr Centennial: Calen Carr’s start at New England on May 19 was his 100th MLS regular season appearance.

Davis reaches 25 Dynamo goals with BBVA Compass opener: Brad Davis’ sensational 30‐yard strike against D.C. United

on May 12 was his 25th goal in all competitions with the Dynamo. Davis is the third Dynamo player to reach 25 goals,

joining Brian Ching (64) and Dwayne De Rosario (32). It was Davis’ 37th MLS regular season goal.

Cameron Climbing: With Geoff Cameron’s start at New England on May 19 he reached 141 appearances in all

competitions to pass Wade Barrett for seventh on the Dynamo all‐time list.

Corey Ashe made his 175th appearance for the Dynamo in all competitions at D.C. on April 28. He is the third Dynamo

player to reach 175 appearances in all competitions (Brad Davis, Brian Mullan).

Will Bruin scored in three consecutive games (4/15, 4/21, 4/28) to mark the fifth time a Dynamo player has scored in three

consecutive games (Bruin 2012, Ching 2006, 2008; Joseph Ngwenya 2007; Stuart Holden 2009).

First Road Win of 2012: Houston’s 1‐0 win over Chivas USA on March 11 erased bad memories of the 2011 road schedule. It

took Houston 16 games to record its first road win of the 2011 campaign. After a 0‐6‐9 start, the Dynamo defeated FC

Dallas 1‐0 at Pizza Hut Park on September 24.

Six years after the club’s first match on April 2, 2006, only two players remain on the Dynamo roster: Brian Ching and Brad

Davis. Defender Eddie Robinson retired in January and joined the front office as an assistant coach with the team’s Youth

Academy and as a color analyst on TV broadcasts.

UP NEXT: DYNAMO VISIT MONTREAL FOR FIRST MEETING WITH IMPACT The Dynamo travel to Quebec for their first‐ever regular season game with the Montreal Impact on Saturday. The match will

take place at newly‐renovated Saputo Stadium, which opened on Saturday with a 4‐1 Impact win over Seattle.
