HEAD COACH CALEB PORTERHead coach Caleb Porter enters his fourth season with the club in 2016 aftersigning a long-term contract extension on Jan. 27, 2016. Since joining the Timbers in 2013, Porter has compiled one of the league’s top winning percentages among active MLS coaches with a record of 43-28-39 (.568), leading the Timbers to their first MLS Cup title in 2015, two Western Conference Championship appearances and double-digit wins in each of his first three seasons.

Over Porter’s first four seasons, the Timbers have lost the fewest games (28) of any MLS team and have compiled regular-season point totals of 57 (2013), 49 (2014) and 53 (2015). Ad-ditionally, since 2013, Portland’s combined point total (167) ranks as the sixth most in MLS, behind only the LA Galaxy (179), New York Red Bulls (175), FC Dallas (175) Seattle Sounders FC (174), and Sporting Kansas City (170). Portland has also registered a league-best 35 shutouts in that span, while the club’s 14 road wins over the last four seasons rank as the most in MLS over that span.

The 2013 MLS Coach of the Year, Porter coached in his 100th game as an MLS coach against Real SaltLake on Oct. 14, 2015, posting a record of 39-25-36 in those games, which tied San Jose Earthquakeshead coach Dominic Kinnear for the fewest losses (25) in MLS history in a coach’s first 100 careergames. In addition, his .570 winning percentage during that span ranks fourth among active coachesthrough their first 100 games, behind the LA Galaxy’s Bruce Arena (62-37-1, .625), Seattle’s Sigi Schmid(52-33-15, .595) and Kinnear (40-25-35, .575). Ending the 2015 campaign with a nine-game unbeatenrun across all competitions, the Timbers lifted their first MLS Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over Columbus Crew SC on Dec. 6, 2015. Portland finished the regular season with an MLS-club-record 15 wins, whilealso tying for the league lead in shutouts (13). On the road, the Timbers finished the 2015 season tiedfor the most road wins (7) in the league.

During his tenure, the Timbers have qualified for CONCACAF Champions League twice (2014-15, 2016-17), finished in the top three in the Western Conference in two of his first three seasons and made theirdeepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, reaching the semifinals in 2013.

Porter was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the award sinceit was founded in 1957. On Aug. 6, 2014, Porter helped guide the MLS All-Stars to a 2-1 win over Ger-man power Bayern Munich in the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Providence Park in Portland.

During Porter’s first season with Portland in 2013, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaroundseasons in MLS history, finishing the regular season atop the Western Conference table. In comparisonto 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record, 43-goalimprovement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season tied for the few-est in MLS history in a 34-game season and the Timbers led the league with 15 shutouts. The Timbersrecorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best11-1-5 home record at Providence Park and an MLS single-season record 11 home shutouts. In 2014,the Timbers netted a team-record 61 goals while recording the best goal differential (plus-9) of anynon-playoff team in MLS history.

Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation “A” license and an NSCAAadvanced national diploma, was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenureas head coach at the University of Akron (2006-12). He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 and wasnamed 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cupappearances (2009, 2010) and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010.

Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Teamduring 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18National Team (2009-11). Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University,winning two national championships with the Hoosiers.

As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft.He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professionalplaying career in 2000. He also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronzemedal at the 1997 World University Games. As a four-time All-Big Ten selection and three-year captainat Indiana, Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles and two College Cup appearances. Porterwas the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy. Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degreein sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin (7) and Jake (5),and a daughter, Stella (4).

Sunday’s match marks the seventh all-time meeting between Portland and To-ronto FC and the third between the two sides at Providence Park since the 2011 MLS campaign. In both games played at Providence Park, Portland are unbeaten against the Canadian-based club, registering a 6-2 advantage in goals scored with a win and a draw.

In their most recent match against Toronto at Providence Park, held on Sept. 7, 2013, the Timbers scored four goals in the second half to defeat Toronto 4-0 as four different players found the back of the net for Portland. Overall, nine differ-ent players have scored for the Timbers against Toronto FC in the all-time series.

Despite a strong second-half performance, the Portland Timbers could not overcome an early goal against the run of play in a 1-0 road loss against Toronto FC in front of 23,569 fans at BMO Field on May 23. FACING TORONTO

Since entering the league in 2011, the Timbers have had nine different players score against Toronto in six games played. Additionally, the Timbers have pro-duced multi-goal games in four of those six matches.

Timbers midfielders Ned Grabavoy and Jack Jewsbury both rank in the top 20 among active players for games played against Toronto FC, with both players featuring 13 times against Toronto.

DEFENSIVE EFFORT

Entering Sunday’s match, the Timbers rank fourth in MLS for tackles made (184), trailing NYCFC (203), FC Dallas (192) and D.C. United (186).

Additionally, Timbers midfielder Diego Chara leads the team and MLS in tackles made (36) and successful tackles (28) in 2016, winning 77 percent of his tackles through eight games played.

After adding three tackles to his tally during a 1-1 draw against the New Eng-land Revolution on April 27, Chara now has 577 overall tackles in league play, since joining Portland in 2011, ranking second in MLS among active players. Seattle Sounders FC defensive midfielder Osvaldo Alonso ranks as the only player to record more tackles than Chara, sitting in first place with 633 tackles recorded since the 2011 campaign.

FINISHING TOUCHThe Timbers rank fifth in MLS for goals scored (12) through the first eight games of the season, only trailing LA Galaxy (17), FC Dallas (15), the Houston Dynamo (13), Orlando City SC (13). Following a 1-1 draw against the New England Revolution on April 27, which featured midfielder Jack Barmby scoring his first goal in MLS, the Timbers have not received goals from five different players so far this season, with Fanendo Adi, Jack McInerney, Darren Mattocks and Diego Valeri each recording a goal leading up to Wednesday’s fixture.

AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS

After recording a brace in a 3-1 win against San Jose on April 16, Timbers for-ward Fanendo Adi moved into a tie for second place in MLS for goals (6), while ranking second for game-winning goals (2).

Becoming the only player during Portland’s MLS era to deliver a brace after coming on as a substitute, Adi notched his second goal against the Earthquakes in the ninth minute of stoppage time in the second half, surpassing Nat Borch-ers’ game-winning finish in the 95th minute against Real Salt Lake on Aug. 15, 2015, as the latest goal in a MLS regular-season match in team history.

Adi’s finish also signified the second-latest stoppage-time goal in MLS history, behind only Dominic Oduro’s goal for the Houston Dynamo in the 100th minute of play on Sept. 25, 2010.

Additionally, Portland midfielder Diego Valeri ranks fourth in MLS for shots taken (31), trailing only David Villa (40), Sebastian Giovinco (37) and Fabian Espindola (32).

H0ME FIELD ADVANTAGEThe Portland Timbers have compiled a 26-8-21 regular-season mark at Provi-dence Park since 2013, with the team’s seven home losses being the second-fewest in MLS over the last three seasons, trailing only the LA Galaxy (4).
