    Initializing Your VNX

  • Initializing the storage system

After the storage system is fully powered up for the first time, use the Unisphere StorageSystem Initialization Wizard to initialize the storage system. Initialization sets the networkparameters for storage-systemmanagement and creates amanagement user account for thestorage system so you can manage it over the LAN.

    Before you start

To complete this procedure, you will need:

The management port and login information in the Planning Worksheets section of thesystem install guide that shipped with your system. This information includes:

Note: Theworksheets can also be obtained from the RecommendedResources section of the SupportBy Product Page located on the Support.EMC.com website.

A static IP address for each storage processor in the system (for example,http://123.45.6.7).

The IPv6 global prefix and gateway for each SP if your network supports the IPv6Internet Protocol and youwant tomanually configure IPv6 for themanagement ports.

The subnet mask of the LAN to which the system is connected. The default gateway address of the LAN to which the system is connected.

The system hardware product ID/serial number (TLA S/N) on the tag that is hangingfrom the back top right corner of a disk processor enclosure (Figure 1 on page 3).

Figure 1. Location of the storage-system product ID/serial number on the DPE

A host on the same subnet as the storage-system management ports. This requirementis for initialization only. The host should support a minimum screen resolution of 1024x 768 and 256 colors with small fonts. If the host is behind a firewall, the UDP port 2162(outgoing) and 2163 (incoming), which the initialization wizard uses, must be open forthe wizard to function properly. Contact your network administrator to determine if

Installing the Unisphere Storage System Initialization Wizard

    Installation prerequisites

To initialize a system using the Unisphere Storage System Initialization Wizard, the servermust:

Be running a supported version of the operating system. Be connected to the same subnet as the 10 / 100 management ports of the system that

youwant to initialize. This servermay also have Fibre Channel connections to the system.

If you have an earlier version of the initialization wizard installed, you must uninstall itbefore installing an updated version.

Installing the Unisphere Storage System Initialization Wizard on a Windows host or aWindows virtual machine

We recommend that you download and install the most recent version of the UnisphereStorage System InitializationWizard software from the VNX Series support by product pageon the EMC Online Support website.

    1. Log in as the administrator (or someone who has administrative privileges) to theWindows host or a Windows virtual machine that is on the same subnet as the system.

    2. Download the software:

    a. From the EMCOnline Support website search for the link to download the software.

    b. Select the initialization wizard, and then select the option to save the zip file to yourhost.

    c. Double-click the following executable file to start the installation wizard:UnisphereInitTool-Win-32-x86-language-version-build.exe

    where:

language is either en_US, when only the English version is available, or loc, whenthe localized versions are available (including English).

version and build are the version number and the build number of the software.

    3. Follow the instructions on the installation screens to install the initialization wizard.

A user interface (UI) and a text-based version and a command line version of the wizardare installed.

    4 Initializing Your VNX

    Initializing the storage system

  • 4. When the installation is complete, click Done to exit the wizard.

    5. If your host is behind a firewall, open the UDP port 2162 (outgoing) and port 2163(incoming).

These ports are used by the initialization wizard. If these ports are not opened, theinitialization wizard will not function properly. Contact your network administrator todetermine if these ports are open. If these two ports are not open, have your networkadministrator open the ports.

Running the Unisphere Storage System Initialization Wizard

You can start the initialization wizard from the server on which it is installed. Theinitialization wizard has three methods for executing commands a user interface (UI)version, a command line interface that can be scripted, or a text-based utility that cannot bescripted. Before continuing, make sure that the system is powered up completely.

Note: For system initialization, connect the server from which you are running the wizard and thesystem to the same network subnet. Once you have assigned an IP address to the system, the serverand system can be on different subnets.

Starting the initialization wizard UI on a Windows server or a Windows virtual machine

To start the initializationwizard, select Start All Programs EMC Unisphere UnisphereStorage System Initialization .

Using the UI version of the initialization wizard on a Windows host or a Windows virtualmachine

After you start the wizard, it automatically scans the subnet for supported systems. Whenthis system discovery operation is complete, the utility lists, by hardware product ID/serialnumber, all uninitialized and initialized systems it found. The hardware product ID/serialnumber is on a hanging tag at the rear of the system.

If the discovery operation did not find the system you are installing, verify that the systemsmanagement ports are properly cabled to the LAN on which the host resides. Themanagement ports and the host must both reside on the same physical subnet.

Proceed through the wizard screens, providing information where required. For moreinformation about completing the wizard, click Help in the wizards menu bar.

If you entered an SP IP address for the first time or changed an SP IP address, the utilityreboots the system, and the SP fault light on the back of each SP starts blinking. The reboottakes several minutes to complete. When it has completed, the SP fault light (LED) on eachSP stops blinking and remains off.

Running the Unisphere Storage System Initialization Wizard 5

    Initializing the storage system

  • Starting the text-based or command line initialization wizard on a Windows server or aWindows virtual machine

To start the text-based version, at a command prompt enter cd C:\ProgramFiles\EMC\Unisphere Storage System Initialization or cd C:\Program Files

(x86)\EMC\Unisphere Storage System Initialization; then enterInitToolCLI.exe. To start the command line version, at a command prompt enter cd C:\Program

Files\EMC\Unisphere Storage System Initialization or cd C:\Program Files

(x86)\EMC\Unisphere Storage System Initialization; then enter InitToolCLI.exeand any of the command line switches listed for the initialization wizard in the EMCVNX Command Line Interface Reference for Block .

    Verifying the storage-system initialization

Verify that the storage system was initialized successfully by logging into Unisphere .

    Starting Unisphere

    1. Log in to a host (which can be a server) that is connected through a network to the systemsmanagement ports and that has an Internet browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer,Netscape, or Mozilla.

    2. Start the browser.

    3. In the browser window, enter the IP address of one of the following that is in the samedomain as the systems that you want to manage:

A system SP with the most recent version of the VNX Operating Environment (OE)installed

Note: This SP can be in one of the systems that you want to manage.

A Unisphere management station with the most recent Unisphere Server and UIsinstalled

Note: If you do not have a supported version of the JRE installed, you will be directed to the Sunwebsite where you can select a supported version to download. For information on the supportedJRE versions for your version of Unisphere, refer to Environment and System Requirements in theUnisphere release notes on the EMC Online Support website.

    4. Enter your user name and password.

  • 5. Select Use LDAP if you are using an LDAP-based directory server to authenticate usercredentials.

If you select the Use LDAP option, do not include the domain name.

When you select the LDAP option, the username / password entries are mapped to anexternal LDAP or Active Directory server for authentication. Username / password pairswhose roles are not mapped to the external directory will be denied access. If the usercredentials are valid, Unisphere stores them as the default credentials.

    6. Select Options to specify the scope of the systems to be managed.

Global (default) indicates that all systems in the domain and any remote domains can bemanaged. Local indicates that only the targeted system can be managed.

    7. Click Login.

When the user credentials are successfully authenticated, Unisphere stores them as thedefault credentials and the specified system is added to the list of managed systems inthe Local domain.

    8. If you are prompted to add the system to a domain, add it now.

The first time that you log in to a system, you are prompted to add the system to aUnisphere domain. If the system is the first one, create a domain for it. If you alreadyhave systems in a domain, you can either add the new system to the existing domain orcreate a new domain for it. For details on adding the system to a domain, use theUnisphere help.
