In this issue

I work at a large manufacturing facility in northwest

Ohio in the machining department. One Friday night nearthe end of our shift, the young men in my departmentgathered around my work station and began discussingtheir weekend plans. I listened to the familiar chatter ofwine, women, and song when one of them turned to me andasked, “Bruce, what are the rules of life?” They all becamesilent and looked at me.

I answered immediately, “Do all you have agreed to doand do not encroach on other people or their property.”(These are the two fundamental laws of mankind fromRichard J. Maybury’s book, Whatever Happened to Justice?which Sri Harold Klemp, the spiritual leader of Eckankar,spoke about in a seminar talk.) One of the young men askedme to repeat them and I did. “What does encroach mean?”asked another, and I gave him a brief definition [to trespasson the domain, property or rights of another]. They re-mained silent for a few seconds and seeing I had nothingelse to say, resumed their chatter.

The buzzer sounded signaling the end of our shift. Weclocked out and headed for the locker room. The lockerroom is on the other side of the plant and up some stairs soit takes a few minutes to get there. On the walk, one of theyoung men dropped back to where I was and asked, “Whatwas the second one again?”

One may wonder why that question was asked andwhy it was asked of me. I engage only in the briefest ofconversations with these men. I generally read the newspa-per during lunch, often by myself, rather than join thecasual lunch time talk.

However, as Souls, we each can be a beacon of theLight and Sound of God wherever we are; at work, home,shopping, or traveling. Sri Harold Klemp has shared manystories of how other Souls recognize the spiritual con-sciousness of someone, who is otherwise unknown to them,to share a concern because they felt that Soul may have ananswer. The young man who asked the question, “Whatare the rules of life?” did so spontaneously. As Soul hewanted to know the basic spiritual rules of conduct forliving on earth, and he sensed I might be able to help him.

To sing orchant the word HU, an ancient name for God, first getcomfortable, close your eyes, and take a few deepbreaths. Next, gently put your attention on your innervisual screen, where daydreams and images come toyou. With your eyes closed, sing HU (pronounced likethe word hue) as a song of love. When you sing HU andsit in quiet contemplation, you might also perceive theinner Light and Sound. The Light may appear asbrightness or colors on your inner visual screen. TheSound may be musical or the sounds of nature, such asthe wind or the ocean. However you experience thepresence of God, it is bringing you a broaderunderstanding of the life you lead..

was browsing the EckankarOhio.org website andcame across the article by Bruce Ark on “The Rules of Life.”I felt perfectly in tune with the message. The article inspiredme to ask the question of Divine Spirit, “If we are living,breathing manifestations of Divine Spirit, is there somethingspecial we need to do?”

Not long after posing my question, I had the followingexperience. There I was, awake at 5:00 a.m. on a Sundaymorning. I completed my daily declarations, dream diaryentry, took the dogs outside, and did a spiritual exercise.Hmmm, well it was about time for Tim’s to open, so Ithought I’d go there for breakfast. Tim’s is a little diner aboutfour miles away from my house.

When I arrived at Tim’s diner, there was another car inthe parking lot waiting for it to open at 7:00 a.m. Both of uswaited in our cars as we watched Brandi, the waitress, enterto start the preparations for the opening. By the time thedoors opened, there was a group of people waiting to goinside. After exchanging the usual pleasantries with thewaitress, I walked to the area where I generally sit and gotinto my usual booth. And the guy that was waiting outsidein his car at the same time I was took a booth across from me.

We struck up a conversation, talking about all sorts ofthings: where we were from, where we had lived, what wehad done in our lives, he is just passing through while I livehere, etc. We finally got around to discussing music. Thisgentleman is about 15 years older than me, and he wassurprised to learn that I know the music he listened to whilegrowing up. We talked about the Beatles, the Rolling Stones,and the revolution they had on the music industry and theworld in general. He finished his breakfast and began to getready to leave, but said, “You ever hear of a band calledSpirit?” I knew they were an early progressive rock band

from the 60’s. I said, “Yeah, Randy California was the guitarplayer.” He replied, “You should check out their song,‘Fresh Garbage.’”

Mind you, we spoke about nothing spiritual during ourconversation all breakfast long… we were just two commonfolks having breakfast. But to me, this is just anotherexample of the ECK, Divine Spirit, at work. I may never seethis person again, but this meeting obviously needed to takeplace, as we both arrived early, or right on time if you wantto look at it from a spiritual perspective. The little additionabout the band Spirit at the end of the conversation broughtcomplete clarity to me by revealing that this was a spiritualexperience.

God loves, God is, and the utter simplicity of therealization is amazing, and easy to share. If all situationsare created by God, and every situation is for the spiritualunfoldment of all involved, then we simply need to exist inthe moment and share God’s love. Just be you, “Spirit” willdo the rest.

The Power andProtection of HU

y former wife and I used to own a florist shop. As amember of Eckankar for several years, I had learned throughexperience the peace and joy that singing or chanting HU(an ancient name for God) gives me. As I drove to and fromthe bank to make a deposit, I sang HU.

My banking completed, I pulled into the flower shopparking lot and stopped in front of our display window.Other than my car, the lot was empty. From this vantagepoint, the check-out counter and the largest part of the salesarea were visible through the window. As I prepared to exitmy car, a young man quickly came around the side of thebuilding on my left and entered the front door of the flowershop.

At that point, it seemed my world changed. Everythingbecame calm, and time seemed to stand still. I could still see,but not any farther than the planter at the base of thewindow. My body felt as though it was packed in cotton,

which kept me from moving or hearing any outer noise.Surprisingly, I felt no fear—just calmness. As fast as thesesensations came, they were gone and I could see all again.The young man bolted out the front door and disappeared inthe same direction from which he had come.

I got out of the car and entered the flower shop,wondering what had just happened and how much timehad passed. My wife was standing behind the countershaking and starting to cry.

“What happened?” I asked.“I was just robbed at gun point and you were watching

it all happen and didn’t do anything to help me!” shescreamed.

In time, she realized, as I did in that moment, that wewere both protected. If I would have walked in on therobbery, the outcome might have ended tragically.Fortunately, we only lost some money, and eventually, theemotional trauma passed.

To this day, I still sing HU. The HU is part of my dailyspiritual exercises. It lifts me up to a place where I can tunein to the voice of God. There, I see, hear, and live life fromthe viewpoint of Soul. I will never stop singing HU!

Morning breaks mysteriously misty around thebudded backyard trees. A renewal comes with theMaster’s reminder: Anger cannot exist in the samespace as love. Choose.

Flash of insight out of the maze of the mind andastral influences and into the warmth of God’s vision:When shipping on the Divine Ocean, the troughs blockall sensation except the walls of water, but the swells,the peaks, these bring the little boats closer to the skyGod. Over and over. One day, we will each cross thisocean and beach ourselves at the sandy feet of ourEternal Father.
