Online- Modules

Introduction:

A global “Green New Deal” was hailed as best road to recovery from the financial and economic crisis of 2008-2009. Indeed, “Green

Investments” made up most of the “stimulus packages” that were deployed to help deal with the crisis. This was essential in a context

of resource constraints, where further economic development requires a transformation of the economic system towards more

sustainable patterns of consumption and production. The transformation involves both “visible” and “invisible” structure of the

economy. Improvements in resource efficiency will need to be made both to the “invisible structure” of transport, building and energy

systems, and the “invisible structure” of markets, governance, regulations and lifestyles.

This “Low Carbon Green Growth” is an opportunity for the countries of the ESCWA region. The Green Economy (GE) does not

require a trade-off between the ecology and economic growth. Rather, it offers a way to optimize resource use, away from the

“traditional” wasteful and polluting practices of the “Brown Economy”. This approach will help exporters in the ESCWA region to

move closer towards the Green Economy (GE), and thus remain competitive with their trading partners in the European Union (EU).

The Green Help Desk Egypt

This on-line training and preceding orientation Session are part of the activities of the Green Help Desk Initiative

spearheaded by ESCWA in partnership with CEDARE in Egypt. As part of the project “Strengthening regional capacities in

the ESCWA region on developing green production sectors”, ESCWA has created “Green Help Desks” in selected Member

Countries. The Help Desks support capacity-building and information-sharing among all national stakeholders to promote

green production, with a special focus on those sectors that can represent an added value in each member country.

The Green Help Desks including that of Egypt aim to support the production sectors – particularly small and medium

enterprises (SMEs) – to engage in the emerging green economy by developing their products and/or their production

processes to become in line with the principles and objectives of sustainable development.

Activities

Collect and disseminate information on Green production sectors (green growth and green business) opportunities

with specific focus on policy tools that beneficiaries can tap on, including conducting surveys on financing schemes,

regulations, and national and international support policies for green production;

Facilitate networks of experts and institutions in that are specialized in Green Productive Sectors related issues;

Organize training of trainers and technical training and workshops for selected beneficiaries on green developments,

energy efficiency, sustainable production and consumption, climate change mitigation and adaptation, cleaner

production, etc.
