Is my conversion practical, real and doable? We are familiar with the saying, ‘life is about the second chance.’ I’d even say that in our conversion journey, perhaps my life is about third or fourth chance, or even multiple chances. It is said that in the way of the Lord (spiritual journey), not to progress is to go back. As we wind up the ordinary season of the liturgical year, the scriptures of Sunday liturgy point towards a more profound conversion of our lives. On this twenty-sixth Sunday in the ordinary time, Jesus presents to us the parable of the two sons. Often times, it is possible that we read the parables of Jesus only at the level of a narrative. While it is a good start, we have to read and reflect on the parables of Jesus, taking into consideration the spiritual and historical context of the first century. Throughout the gospels, we see that scribes and Pharisees often looked for an opportunity find fault with Jesus. On the other hand, Jesus elevated the personalities of sinners and tax collectors, presenting them as potential individuals for discipleship. Through the parable of the two sons, Jesus compares and contrasts the lives of sinners, tax collectors with that of scribes and Pharisees. The first son refuses to do the work of the father, but then changes his mind and works. With the same instruction, the second son says that he will do the work but does not follow through. The first son’s initial refusal ultimately resulted in the doing the Will of the father. The point of the parable is the transformation: the first son represented sinners and tax collectors who received the message of Jesus and were transformed. Their life must have been about the second, the third or even the tenth chance. Regardless of where they were on the spiritual ladder, they made their way toward Jesus. The scribes and Pharisees are compared to the second son who appeared to listen to the father, but failed in doing the work entrusted to him. These groups of people have had every opportunity and knowledge to do the right thing, but refused to receive guidance, failing to change their way of thinking and living. The Gospel challenges us to actively listen and calls for an engaged commitment to do the Will of the Father. In this process, God isn’t tired of giving us unlimited chances. He gives us multiple opportunities to listen and experience an active conversion of our hearts. In other words, my profession of faith in Jesus, and my conversion to embrace His Word must be practical, real and doable. Am I open to changing my way of thinking and experience true conversion to do the Will of God?
