E-MAP (Engineering Matching & Placement program)
• Employer-driven program to job match Internationally Trained Engineers (ITEs) with manufacturing jobs
• Funded by HRSDC – Foreign Credential Recognition Office
• Phase I was funded for 3 years until 2009
• Phase II funded until 2013
E-MAP Phase I Results
• Goal was to create a job matching program that was valued by employers & ITEs
• Achieved a validated model and exceeded our placement goal (58 placements)
• Re-funded for phase II April 2010
• Created assessment criteria for ITEs
Barriers to Employment (Assessment Criteria)
• English communication speaking and writing• Customs and cultural norms of workplace
o presenting yourself in an interview
o understanding what the employer is looking for
o Canadian workplace basics / roles
• Relevant industry experience• References that can be checked• Trusted education• Computer / software skills
E-MAP Success Factors
• Partnered with a trusted industry association (manufacturing)
• Hired skilled HR & career counseling staff who coached both employers & ITEs
• On-going communication with employers & ITEs
• Just-In-Time resume writing, interview coaching & job matching negotiations
E-MAP Phase II
• Continue and expand E-MAP services
• Success to date:– > 500 ITEs registered and >250 employers
registered– 146 jobs posted, 28 interviews, 3 matches
• Make program fully sustainable before 2013 when funding ends so valued services can continue to be offered
E-MAP Collaborative Website• Build an on-line tool that automates and
scales E-MAP job matching services + offers other services
• Currently in needs assessment phase and need your input to ensure most useful:
• Survey Monkey
• Focus groups in evenings/weekends
• Future: trial users
• Will send email soon to registered EMAP members
