Global Cancer Concern India’s response to Disaster in Kerala

Recently, Kerala faced the wrath of devastating floods. The calamity caused misery to the people. Because of torrential rains, overflowing rivers and serial landslides, resulted in hundreds of deaths, hundreds and thou-sands of people becoming homeless as their homes were destroyed. Though the Government responded well with immediate rescue operation and restoration of civic infrastructure across Kerala, it will need a lot of time and resources to rebuild the life of people affected by disaster which was the worst in about a century.

KERALA

GCCI’s Response - Phase I (Medical Relief)

GCCI quickly swung into action to respond to the natural disaster when floods caused havoc in Kerala. In the first phase of its response to flood disaster, it provided medicare which emerged as very critical need after shelter and food to the flood afflicted people through its Mobile Medicare Unit. GCCI’s Mobile Medicare Team including Doctors, Nurse/Pharmacist and Project Officer fully equipped with medicines, medical disposables visited the relief camps established by Kerala Govt. for the flood victims in Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts to provide its services. This programme was co-ordinated at local level by Ms Manju Sujith - Sr. GM, Kerala GCCI

GCCI’s RESPONSE TO KERALA DISASTER - PHASE II

In the 2nd Phase, GCCI with the support of DeShaw and Arcesium through CAF India, provided family kits including school bags, notebooks, pencil sets, mosquito repellant coils, sleeping mats, sanitary napkins, tooth pastes, combs, hair oils, bath soap packs, big towels, match boxes, candles and water purifiers to families in phased manner in the most affected Kuttanad Taluk of Allapuzha district in Kerala to 300 families. On 8th October, 2018 the trucks contain-ing first lot of relief material to be transported to Kerala through train were flagged off by Brig B V Ahuja - Trustee & Advisor and Dr Harvinder Singh Bakshi– Chief Executive Officer from GCCI’s Primary Health Care Centre at Gurgaon. On 14th October, 2018 the family kits were distributed. Ms. Manju Sujith - Sr GM GCCI Kerala & Mr. Samudra Naskar– GM Program Management at head office at Gurgaon organized the distribution of kits in conjunction with Pancha-yat Officials and community leaders.

CHENNAI - TAMIL NADU

Global Cancer Concern India embarked upon Mobile Palliative Home Care Unit at Chennai on 6th July, 2018 with the objective of improving the quality of life of disadvantaged persons afflicted with cancer by address-ing their physical, emotional, practical and spiritual issues. The Unit was Flagged off by Mr. K. Pandia Rajan, Hon'ble Minister for Tamil Development, Culture and Archaeology - Govt. of Tamil Nadu and Dr Harvinder Singh Bakshi, CEO of GCCI. On this occasion, the Hon'ble Minister Sh Pandia and the CEO Dr Bakshi ad-dressed the media and informed them about the cancer scenario in the country specially in Tamil Nadu and the Palliative Care Project which would be serving the poor patients in Chennai and its vicinity. Hon’ble Minis-ter lauded the work of Global Cancer Concern India and assured it of his best cooperation in its crusade against cancer. Senior Govt Health Authorities and GCCI team including Mr. Ganesh Bhatt, Head Program Management, Mr. S. Dass, Dy. Dir - Tamil Nadu, Dr Kavitha - Medical Officer, Mr. B. Rajesh - Sr. Manager and Ms Revathi– Manager were present on this occasion.

Prior to the Flagging Off event, the CEO addressed the press conference at Chennai Press Club on 5th July 2018. The programme was very well covered by the media.

A Yoga/Motivational session for the staff was organised at Head office of GCCI in Gurga-on on 20th Aug., 2018. RANAGHAT, HOOGLY - WEST BENGAL & JAMSHEDPUR - JHARKHAND

Assembly Talks were organized by Ms. Paramita Chakraborti - Sr. Manager Kol-kata team, in three different schools.

Convent of Jesus & Mary– Ranaghat– West Bengal. This school contributed Rs. 62,694/- for SFR Programme in the month of May.

Tagore Academy, Jamshedpur - Jharkhand. This Acade-my contributed Rs. 2,03,696/- in the month of June.

Tribeni Tissues Vidyapith, Chandrahati– Hooghly. This school contributed Rs. 41,960/- in the month of May.

ERODE - TAMIL NADU

SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION BY THE STUDENTS OF KALAIMAGAL HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL, ERODE DISTRICT IN TAMILNADU

The students and the teachers participated very buoyantly in the Orientation Program con-ducted in Kalaimagal School, Erode by GCCI Team comprising Mr S Das – Deputy Director, Mr B Rajesh – Sr Manager and Ms Revathi – Manager. The students raised an impressive sum of Rs. 6.5 lacs (nearly) through School Fund Raising Program. The inspiration behind the spec-tacular success of the program is Mrs S. Mangalavathy, the Principal of the school who moti-vated the children to wholeheartedly support the cause of cancer. Mrs S. Mangalavathy is a prominent personality in the field of social welfare.

CHANDIGARH

A workshop on Palliative Care with the financial support of Oracle Inc. was organised at Hotel The

Taj at Chandigarh by Global Cancer Concern India (GCCI). The speakers at workshop included interna-

tionally renowned palliative care experts Dr Suresh Kumar, Director – Institute of Palliative Medicine,

Medical College, Callicut, Kerala and Dr. G Illangovan M.D, A.B Palliative Medicine USA. They enlight-

ened the participants with their rich repositories of knowledge and experience. Dr Harvinder Singh

Bakshi, CEO of GCCI acquainted the audience with the multifaceted cancer-care work of Global Can-

cer Concern India and emphasised on the quality management of Palliative Care Program. A session

on standard operational procedures and documentation of GCCI’s Palliative Care Program was con-

ducted by Mr. Ganesh Bhatt, Head Program. The Medical and Paramedical teams of Mobile Cancer

Care Units of GCCI from various states in the country and representative from other NGOs buoyantly

participated in the workshop through presentations and role play sessions. Mr Sukhdeep Singh Gill, Dy

Director-North anchored the Workshop. Mr. Shiv Pal Singh Rana, Manager- Chandigarh, Mr Samundra

and Mr Yashpal of Program Department at Head Office assisted significantly in making arrangements

for the Workshop. An exhibition depicting various dimensions of Mobile Cancer Care Project, Bath-

inda in Punjab which is being supported by Oracle Inc was also put up at the venue. The media cov-

ered the event very well. The CEO was interviewed by various channels including – ZEE tv.

MUMBAI - MAHARASHTRA

Mr. Umesh Naik - Joint Director GCCI at Mumbai was a special guest on the occasion of World Hospice and Palliative Care Day on 9th Oct., 2018 at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, Mumbai. Dr. Joyita Deodhar, Ad Hoc officer in charge, Dept of Palliative Medicine and Mary Ann Muckadin, Director of Palliative Medicine appreciated GCCI for its financial contribution to the hospital for Palliative Care Project.

An awareness program was conducted in Shri Madhavrao Bhagwat High School, Vile Parle, Mumbai on 20th Oct., 2018. The school has collected a sum of Rs. 3,32,000/- from the efforts of students for the cancer care work of GCCI. Mr. Umesh Naik, Joint Dir. in his address em-phasized on healthy life style. His talk covered various cancer risk factors and precautions.

PUNE - MAHARASHTRA

A Cancer screening camp at Hill Green High School and Junior College, Pune was organised by

Pune team on 11th August, 2018 by Ms Mamta Nath, Sr. GM. Around 100 people were

screened in the camp

An Orientation Program at Sinhgad Spring Dale Public School was organized by Ms Mamta

Nath, Sr. GM. Dr. Shailaja Munshi sensitized the students and the teachers. The Programme

FARIDABAD - HARYANA

VISIT OF BPCL OFFICIALS TO FARIDABAD PROJECT.

BPCL is providing support to GCCI for Mobile Primary Health, Cancer Screening and Palliative Care Unit Project at Faridabad. Through this project GCCI is providing service in slum cluster/backward localities in Faridabad. On 8th Oct., 2018 the officials from BPCL visited the project office located at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Post Graduate Institute of Management - Central Green, Faridabad and various project sites including - Dabua Colony. They were shown project activities by Ms. Ajeeta Singh - Sr GM CSR and Mr. Sachin Joshi - Project Officer. The officials interacted with Doctor, patients, Ms Ajeeta Singh and Mr Sachin Joshi.

An Orientation Programme was organised on 21st July, 2018 at Rawal International

school, faridabad for 11th standard students. Dr. Geeta Roy, Medical Officer gave a

detailed talk on Cancer.

An Orientation Program on Cancer was organised by Mr. Mohd. Aslam - Sr GM and Mr. Sachin Joshi - Project Officer at DAV Public School, NIT-3, Faridabad on 19th May 2018. More then 100 persons attended the program Ms. Jyoti Sethi, Sr. Coordinator , DAV Public School NIT-3, Faridabad presented a plant to Dr. P.K. Dash who gave lecture on Cancer.

AHMEDABAD - GUJARAT

Prize Distribution Function in Smt. Sarojini Naidu School - Rajkot, Gujarat. The students of this school collected Rs. 65000/- for the cause of cancer by partici-pating in the school event conducted by Mr. Rajesh Hirvaniya - Sr. GM of GCCI at Ah-medabad. Mr. Godhaniya - Dy. GHAZIABAD - UTTAR PRADESH

A Free Cancer Screening Camp was organized at Sun Valley International School, Ghaziabad on 26th May, 2018. Dr. Sunil Bhasin, Dr. Prabha Agarwal and Dr. Geeta Roy were there for conducting the camp. The Programme was organized by Mr. Mohd. Aslam - Sr. GM & Mr. Ra-jesh Kumar - Sr. Manager.

MOHALI - PUNJAB

Two Cancer Screening Camps were organized under Mahindra Swaraj Mobile Primary Health Cancer Screening & Palliative Care Unit project at Balmiki Mandir, Teur and Gurudwara Sahib, Tasauli on 29-09-2018 and 02-10-2018. In Teur camp, 177 villagers were examined out of this 132 were females and 45 were males. 65 breast examinations were done, 2 females were found having lumps in their breasts. These suspected cases were referred for further tests.

FARIDKOT - PUNJAB

A screening-cum-orientation camp was conducted at Army School Faridkot on 5th Sept., 2018. About 192 teachers participated in the camp. Visual Orientation Programme on Cancer was organized by Mr Sukhdev Singh (Sr. Manager- GCCI Ludhiana Team) and Dr Chitralekha. The camp was coordinated by Captain Vikas. Dr Vinay Garg and Dr Chitralekha provided con-sultation to the participants in the camp. The overall coordination of the camp was done by GCCI's team comprising Mr. Sukhdev Singh, Mr. Varinder Singh, Mr. Pargat Singh and Ms. Karamjit Kaur.
