Message from the Correspondent
Dear readers,
I am happy to witness, yet another soft copy edition of Abhijna, being
uploaded on the college website. Besides this being an environment
friendly step, it also is a medium for all the stakeholders spread across the
globe to get a bird’s eye view of the happenings at ‘Sarosh Institute of
Hotel Administration’.
I congratulate all the students and staff for their wholehearted involvement
in the academic and co-curricular activities.
My best wishes to all the students and staff for further excellence in all the
activities of the college.

Principal’s Message
Dear readers,
The litmus test for a semester well done and excelled is when one goes
through the various happenings of the bygone semester. Indeed, I am
happy to note that every moment during the semester was well utilized
and packed with various events that ultimately polished the skills and
knowledge of our students for being the future hospitality professionals.
Abhijna showcases these events and has always surpassed the quantum
and quality of the past edition.
Congratulations to all our dear students and my colleagues for their
enthusiasm and passion in whatever they do.

The fourth volume of Abhijna is finally here. This issue focuses mainly on
the activities that were conducted in the college during the period; June
2014-September 2014.The details of various seminars attended by the
Sihaites are also mentioned. I personally thank the students and staff who
have contributed to the success of ‘Abhijna 2014’.Enjoy reading!!!

CONGRATULATIONS
Ms.Rainha Barretto of 2010-2014 batch has bagged second
rank in the Mangalore University BHM Examination.
College Activities (June 2014-September 2014)
Orientation programme for the 2014 batch
On 16th
of June 2014, Orientation Programme for the first
years (2014 batch) was conducted at Manthan, SIHA.The
main objective of the event was to acquaint the newly
joined students with the institutional ethos and practices.
Almost 65 students and their parents attended the same.
Fresher’s Day
Fresher’s Day was organised on 5th of July 2014.The
senior students of our college welcomed the juniors to the
SIHA family. The dazzling and vibrant cultural programme
of the first semester students captivated the minds of the
audience. The event ended with a grand lunch buffet at the
Training Restaurant.
Swearing in ceremony of the members of Student’s Council for the Academic Year 2014-15
On 5th
of July 2014, the swearing in ceremony of
the newly elected members of Student’s Council
was held at Manthan.The newly elected members of

First assembly of the semester
The first assembly of the academic session, June 2014-November 2014 was conducted on 21st of
July 2014 at Manthan.
Desto’14-Cultural Day
Various competitions like Singing, Best Manager, Mad Ads,
Collage making, Flower arrangement, Menu Card designing,
Cocktail & Mocktail making, Dessert Platter, Bread Basket, Art
from waste etc.were conducted for the Sihaites as a part of Cultural
Day on 18th
of July 2014 and 25th
of July 2014 respectively. The
participants exhibited their talents and were filled with enthusiasm.
The events were organised by Mr. Loyal Dsouza, Cultural
Secretary under the guidance of Ms.Divya Dsouza, the Cultural
Advisor.
Seminar by Kareer Krafters
A seminar on Training, Internships and Placements abroad for the V and VII semester students
was organised on 8th
of August 2014 at Manthan by the Training & Placement Cell of SIHA.
Rendezvous Revolution
The National Inter-collegiate cultural event, Rendezvous
2014 was conducted on 12th of August 2014 under the able
guidance of staff coordinator Ms. Sonia Thomas. Mr. Joel
Pinto was the student coordinator for the event. The event
was hosted by the students of III semester BHM for PUC
and Undergraduate students from various colleges in and
around Mangalore. In PUC category, students of Mahesh
P.U College were adjudged as the winners whereas
participants from Oriental College of Hotel Management
(OSHM) Lakkidi (Kerala) won the first place in the Degree
level category.
Independence Day celebration
The Sihaites celebrated India’s 68th independence at the
college premises on 15th of August 2014. Dr.Indira.K,
Principal hoisted the National flag and delivered the
Independence Day message. The martyrs and freedom
fighters of our country were remembered during this
special occasion. Patriotic group song competition was also
scheduled on account of Independence Day and the
function ended up with the breakfast session at the Training
Restaurant.
Teacher’s Day Celebration
Teacher’s Day is intended to be a special day for all the teachers. Students appreciate the efforts
of teachers and honour them for their special contributions to the student community in
general. The Student’s Council of our college celebrated Teacher’s Day on 5th September 2014.
Last assembly of the semester
The last assembly of the semester was conducted at Manthan on September 8, 2014.
Eye-check up camp
The college organised an Eye check up camp for staff and
students in the college campus on 20th
of September 2014.
120 students and staff participated in the camp which was
conducted in association with KSHEMA and Lions Club of
Mangalore.
Club Activities
Seminar on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
The NSS unit of SIHA conducted a seminar on Drug Abuse and
Illicit Trafficking on 26th June 2014 at Manthan.The event was
organised in association with Narcotic Drug Cell, Criminal
Investigation Dept., Mangalore and Department Of Criminology
and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Mangalore.
NSS Seminar on Prevention on Malaria
Dr.Udayakumar and Mr.Sanjay Kini explained the causes and preventive measures to be taken
for Malaria on 19th of July 2014.A health check up for Sihaites was also organised as a part of
this initiative by the NSS wing. The seminar was conducted in association with Department of
Community Medicine, KSHEMA and Lions Club, Mangalore.
Blood Donation Drive
A blood donation camp was organized by the NSS unit in
association with KSHEMA on 24th
July 2014. Dr. Anuja, PG
Student of KSHEMA spoke about the benefits of Blood donation
during the programme. 34 students participated in the camp and
donated blood.
National Service Scheme (NSS)
Rotaract Club
Swearing in ceremony of the newly elected office
bearers of Rotaract Club
The swearing in ceremony of the newly elected office
bearers of Rotaract Club for the academic year 2014-2015
was conducted on 28-06-2014.
Vanamahotsava
The Rotaract Club of SIHA created awareness among
Sihaites on planting trees by conducting Vanamahotsava on
28th
of June 2014.As a part of this initiative, plants and
saplings were planted in the college campus.
The Elixir Club
Competition on ‘Tequila’
‘The Elixir Club’ conducted a competition on the topic ‘Tequila’
on 23rd
of June 2014 with the intention to improve the theoretical
knowledge of the elixirites.
Quiz on logos
A quiz on logos of different alcoholic beverages was conducted by
‘The Elixir Club’ on 27th
of June 2014.15 teams participated for
the event.Sagar Stanly and Jayadeep K.V of V semester emerged
as the winners.
Click-Photography Competition
‘The Elixir Club’ organised a photography competition for the
third consecutive year for the Sihaites on 30th
of June
2014.Participants submitted photographs related to the theme,
‘Mother Nature’.
Competition on ‘Vodka’
On 30th
of June 2014, ‘The Elixir Club’ conducted a competition on the topic ‘Vodka’.Jarad
D’souza of III semester was declared as the winner.
“On the Rocks”-Curtain Raiser
On 12th of July 2014, ‘The Elixir Club’ members
conducted a session on bartending and bar tricks at
Manthan from 9.30 a.m to 11.30 a.m. The elixirites
demonstrated mocktail as well as cocktail making
and bottle flaring that captivated the minds of the
audience. Mr.Fidel Rebello of I semester explained
the scope of bartending in the hospitality industry.
“On the Rocks”-One day workshop on bar tricks and bartending
‘The Elixir Club’ of SIHA in collaboration with
Indian Institute of Bartending (IIBT), Chennai
conducted “On the Rocks”, a one day workshop on
bar tricks and bartending on 23rd of July 2014. The
bar professionals, Mr. R.Suresh and Mr. Shiv
Shankar led the sessions of bottle flaring, bar tricks,
cocktail and mocktail making. Mr.Utpal Kumar
Laha, IIBT Chennai explained about the promising
career in bartending. He also spoke about various
cocktail and mocktail making methods and unveiled
the fourth anniversary logo of ‘The Elixir Club’.
The event was organized as a part of 'The Elixir'
Club's fourth anniversary celebrations.
Quiz on ‘Beer’
As a part of ‘International Beer Day’, on 14th
of August
2014, ‘The Elixir Club’ of SIHA conducted a quiz
competition on the topic ‘Beer’.
Sommelier-IX
Sommelier, the prestigious exam of elixirites was conducted in
Room no.308 on 15th of September 2014 at 1.30 P.M.The topics
elixirites had to study included Absinthe based cocktails, National
alcoholic beverages of different countries of the world, Bacardi,
Absinthe equipments, Preparation of Absinthe, World's costliest
cigar, Chicha etc.Mr.Kiran Desai of VII semester topped the exam
and won the title ‘Sommelier-IX’.

Tavern and Cartoon Time @ The Elixir Notice board
Tavern (Information pertaining to F&B Service) and Cartoon Time (Desi cartoons) were updated
every week in ‘The Elixir’ Notice board at Time out Cafeteria.
The Decanter
The Elixir Club’s monthly newsletter, The Decanter’s 2 issues (July & August 2014) were
printed and distributed to the elixirites this semester.
‘Wine Aficionados’ @ Facebook
In the beginning of this semester, ‘The Elixir Club’ started a new community in Facebook titled
‘Wine Aficionados’. This community is created to share valuable facts and information about
wines with all the wine enthusiasts.
The Elixir Siha blog
The Elixir’s official blogspot was updated this semester. The web address of ‘The Elixir’ blog is
http://theelixirsiha.blogspot.in/.
The Eco Club
Custom made parcel boxes The members of Eco club prepared parcel boxes with the
theme- quit smoking, as a part of the give away presents for
visiting dignitaries and faculty from School of Social work,
Roshni Nilaya.
Inauguration of NSS unit and the Eco Club for
the new term The inauguration of NSS unit and the Eco Club for
the new academic session was organised on 3rd
of
July 2014. Prof.Chandrasekhar, Govt.College,
Mangalore was the chief guest for the function. He
addressed the gathering and spoke on the importance
of combining the efforts of NSS & Eco Club for the
benefit of the students and society.
Poster designing competition by ‘The Eco Club’
A poster designing competition on the topic, ‘Save
Earth, Save Water, Save Energy’ was organized by the
Eco club on 4th
of July 2014 for the students of I
Semester & V Semester BHM.
Vanamahotsava
The Eco Club of SIHA in collaboration with Lions Club of
Mangalore celebrated ‘Vanamahotsava’ by planting trees in and
around SIHA campus on 16th
of August 2014.

Mr.Amar Z.Cherian, Vice-Principal of SIHA attended a one day
workshop on “Wise parenting and discipline” at Yenepoya

A workshop on cocktail making, carving and cooking was
conducted by our students at NITTE P.U College, Nanthoor on
12th
of August 2014.
Faculty Development Programme
Ms.Basavarajeshwari.D attended 3 day Faculty Development Programme on “New Paradigms in
Survey Research” on August 12-14, 2014 organised by AIMIT St. Aloysius Institute of
Management and information Technology, Kotekar, Mangalore.
Ms.Basavarajeshwari.D also attended one day workshop on “New Paradigms in Survey
Research” on 20-08-2014 organized by Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Institute of
Management Development, Mysore.
Prajna
Ms.Basavarajeshwari.D and Ms.Divya D’Souza participated in “Prajna-value orientation”- a one
day seminar for college lecturers, organised by the Ramakrishna Mutt on Sept 9, Tuesday, 2014.
Research Paper
Basavarajeshwari D published a research paper titled “Corporate governance practices: A study
of selected leading hotels in India” in International Journal of Research in Commerce, IT &
Management, Volume No. 4 (2014), Issue No. 09 (September) ISSN 2231-5756
Seminar on ‘Public Participation in Prevention and Detection of Crime’
On 13th
of September 2014, our staff and students participated in a seminar on ‘Public
Participation in Prevention and Detection of Crime’ organised by the Department of Criminology
and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya.
