Operator work station. This operatorwork station is quiet with ergonomiccontrol placement and convenientadjustments, low lever and pedaleffort, ergonomic seat design, andhighly efficient ventilation.

Viewing area. Excellent viewing areathrough large, wide windows. A largeskylight provides upward visibility.The upper front window featuresparallelogram wiper to provide un-obstructed front viewing. The upperleft side door window can slide open.The lower window provides visibilityto the tracks and the ground next tothe machine. The rear window offers a good view behind and to the left,aided by a lower hood profile.

Greater control convenience.Each of the controls is positionedwithin easy reach of the operator.

Cab shell. The double wall, pressedcab shell is mounted to the swingframe using viscous mounts forreduced sound and vibrations.

Wiper. A standard large wiper for the upper and lower windows offersthe selection between continuous and intermittent modes and provides a better visibility.

1 Multipro Electronic Control System.Caterpillar monitor panel includes fuellevel, hydraulic oil temperature andengine temperature gauges, machinecondition indicators, and operatorcontrols in a single console (refer toMultipro on pg. 6).

2 Joysticks. Joysticks control allimplements and swing functions withminimal effort. This includes 4 switcheson each joystick. The integrated joystickconsoles adjust to operator preference.Joystick consoles are suspended as partof the seat arrangement. Special joystickfor the tool control option featuremodulated switches.

3 Travel controls. Hand or foot actuatedtravel controls allow the operator tomove the excavator while working theboom, stick and bucket. Hand levers are easily removable.

4 Activation control lever. Hydraulicactivation control lever deactivateshydraulic functions and prevents start-up when the operator exits the cab.

5 Suspension seat. The fully adjustablesuspension seat includes an impressiverange of comfort features. In addition tofore/aft height and weight adjustments,it also offers wide arm support, headrestand a retractable seat belt. The heightadjustment system of the seat andconsole allows to adjust them together,while the console height can be alsoadjusted independently. Moreover, the armrest also has its owns heightadjustment mechanism, providing goodaccess to control levers.

MultiproThe Multipro manages the engine and hydraulics for maximum performance and enhancedmonitoring capabilities through a new user friendly interface.

Multipro. It controls state-of-the-arthydraulics and engine performance formaximized productivity, increased fuelefficiency, and lower emission andsound levels.

Compact monitor. The 312C uses a compact monitor that neverthelessshows a variety of information. The 312C monitor uses a liquid crystaldisplay, and the dot matrix screen iscapable of displaying a wide range ofitems, such as written messages. It consists of an 8-key keyboard thatmakes it user friendly to the operator.

Pump Flow and Pressure Settings.The 312C monitor is capable ofrecording five hydraulic pump flow and hydraulic pressure settings forvarious tools. This function is veryconvenient because it eliminates theneed to adjust the hydraulics every timea tool is changed and instantly providesthe operator with the correct setting of flow and pressure for each tool.

Alert. This monitor is capable of auto-diagnostic and is designed to alert animpending problem to the operator.

Languages. In addition to icons, the 312C monitor displays language-based information identifying variousfunctions. 20 different displaylanguages are available.

Filter and Oil Warnings. The monitorprovides the number of hours that filterand fluids have been used. It alsodisplays filter and oil change warningswhen the number of hours used reachesthe maintenance interval.

Cat 3064 T Engine. The 312C is poweredby a Cat 3064 T diesel engine, built forworld-class performance and reliability,low maintenance, long life andexcellent fuel economy for lowoperating costs.■ The 3064 T engine complies with

Stage II Emission Directive97/68/EC.

■ The oil filter, oil level gauge, fuelfilter and priming pump are locatedon the top of the engine for easymaintenance.

■ Big capacity of the samp and the oilcartridge allows to reinforce themaintenance intervals at 500 hours.

Torque Rise. The engine is designed forhigh torque rise at middle rpm, a featurethat is especially beneficial for heavy-duty use.

Compact Design. Designed to be ascompact as possible while maintaininghigh performance and excellentresponse.

Automatic Engine Control. The automatic engine control (AEC)maximizes fuel efficiency and reducessound levels. The control automaticallyreduces engine speed to suit application.For further ease and control, a one-touch low idle button on the rightjoystick lever will also reduce enginelevels, conserve fuel and reduce enginesound levels. Operators can use the low-idle button at any time, such as betweencycles when loading trucks.

Starting Performance. To avoid whitesmoke during cold starting, the 3064 Tengine is equipped with an air heater onthe inlet manifold.

Fuel System. Efficient direct injectionfuel system means lower operating cost.

Fuel Consumption. The 3064 T enginehas the best fuel consumption in thisclass of diesel engines. It featuresimproved thermal efficiency andreduced friction resistance betweenpiston and liners.

Crankshaft. Eight balance, one-piece,forged crankshaft enhances balance anddecreases vibration and is inductionhardened to improve abrasionresistance.

Pistons. Heat resistant aluminum alloypistons have a short compressionheight, reducing weight and improvingefficiency.

HydraulicsCaterpillar hydraulics deliver power and control to keep material moving at high volume.

Component Layout. The 312C hydraulicsystem was designed to provide a highlevel of efficiency. With all majorcomponents located close together,shorter tubes and lines are needed,resulting in less friction loss in the linesand reduced pressure drops.

Hydraulic Cross Sensing System.Improves productivity with fasterimplement speeds and quicker, stronger pivot turns.

Hydraulic connections. Use of O-ringface seals on all high-pressure and pilotcircuits reduces leaks opportunities andmakes assembly easy.

Automatic Boom and Swing Priority. For simpler operation, work mode and power mode switches have beeneliminated. Instead, the automatic boomand swing priority function selects the best engine and pump regulation,based on joystick movement.

Stackable Valves. Three types ofstackable valves are available on the312C and attached directly to the maincontrol valve. Up to two stackablevalves can be used in combination with the main control valve to provide a variety of different functions.

Controllability. The hydraulic systemoffers precise control of the 312C,reducing operator fatigue, improvingoperator effectiveness and efficiency,which ultimately translates intoenhanced performance.

Auxiliary Hydraulic Valve.The auxiliary hydraulic valve isstandard of the 312C for use withoptional hydraulic circuits.

Hydraulic Snubbers. Hydraulic cylindersnubbers at the rod-end of boomcylinders and both ends of the stickcylinders cushion shocks, reduce soundand increase cylinder life.

Oil sampling. Scheduled oil samplingallows for scheduled replacement orrepair of components before themachine is stopped because of a majorbreakdown.

Tool Control. With the tool control(option), the machine is being providedwith an electronic additionalprogrammable stackable valve and the ability to optimize the machineperformances according to 5 toolspecifications (including settings forelectrical relief valve for hammercircuit and flow). Flow distributionbetween implements is analyzed andoptimized, with the ability to set priorityon the tool or the implements. Thisoption also includes special joystickswith modulated switches for mediumand high pressure modulation.

Extended Service Intervals.312C service and maintenance intervalshave been extended to reduce machineservice time and increase machineavailability.

Radiator Compartment. The left rearservice door allows easy access to the engine radiator and the oil cooler. A reserve tank and drain cock areattached to the radiator for simplifiedmaintenance.

Air Filter Compartment. The air filterfeatures a double-element constructionfor superior cleaning efficiency.

Ground Level Service. The design and layout of the 312C was made with the service technician in mind.Many service locations are easilyaccessible at ground level allowingcritical maintenance to get done quickly and efficiently.

Swing-Out Oil Cooler. The oil coolerswings out horizontally for excellentcleaning (optional equipment).

Pump Compartment. A service door on the right side of the upper structureallows ground-level access to the pumpand pilot filter.

Greasing Block. Remote greasing blockon the boom and two grease points forthe swing bearing deliver grease to hard-to-reach locations.

Engine Inspection. Engine can beaccessed from the upper structure orfrom under the machine.

Water Separator. Water separatorremoves water from fuel even whenunder pressure and is located in thebattery compartment. Optional waterlevel sensor within cab alarm.

Handrails and Steps. Larger handrailsand steps assist operator in climbing on and off machine.

Grease-lubricated Track. Greaselubricated seals protect the track linkand deliver long track link pin andbushing inner wear life.

Fan Guard. Engine radiator fan iscompletely enclosed by fine wire mesh,reducing the risk of an accident.

Bearings. New boom and stick standard bearings only need greasingevery 1000 hours.

Caterpillar Product Link systemattachment.
