Madam President Deb Conrad shared a few
pictures from the F.O.E International
Convention held in Louisville, KY during early
July.
She reports that she learned at lot at the
business sessions and also managed to have a
great time. She promises a report of the
Convention in her Madam President’s message
for September.
August Charities Special Olympics for Kids and Suicide Prevention for Kids
Chair: The Junior Eagles
Pictures From the International F.O.E. Convention
The Junior Eagles are supporting two
charitable organizations this month.
Special Olympics Colorado provides
year-round training and competition in 22
sports for athletes with intellectual
disabilities who are living in the state. With
the support of volunteers, the generosity
of Colorado citizens, corporations and
local businesses, they are able to offer kids
the chance to participate with other
athletes. This helps builds confidence and
creates opportunities to participate as
productive and respected members of
society.
According to the Western Colorado
Suicide Prevention Foundation, the
leading cause of death for the ages 10 to
14 is suicide.
Please come out and support the Junior
Eagles and their fundraising activities for
these two fine endeavors.

Worthy President’s Message
Hello Again,
I hope everyone is staying cool and
enjoying their summer. We have a lot
happening in August so read your
calendar and come support our charities.
We are still cooking 1/3 lb hamburgers on Tuesday
nights and scrumptious breakfasts every Sunday. If you
haven't been in a while, come on down and enjoy.
We have a new Winchester rifle with a Vortex scope in
30.06 up for grabs, so get on in and buy some raffle
tickets. Don't forget we have live music on two Sundays
this month to enjoy. The Junior Eagles have the charity of
the month and it is twofold: Special Olympics and Suicide
Prevention for kids. Make sure we all support them.
Come see us at YOUR aerie.
Fraternally Yours,
Joe Burns, Worthy President
Aerie Volunteer of the Month
John Moore
John is always willing to help serve,
bartend or cook as well as serve as
the Aerie’s Worthy Vice President.
During July, John manned the grill for the Presidents’
picnic and jumped in more than once at the last
minute to cover and cook for someone who had to
cancel their scheduled snack night in July.
Thank you John for all you do for the Aerie.
Joe Burns, Worthy President
Auxiliary Volunteer of the Month
Verna Murphy
Verna has been an auxiliary member
for 17 years. She is the sweetest,
kindest person you'll ever want to
meet and is one of the backbones that makes our Eagles
Nest shine from top to bottom. She literally cleans,
organizes and makes sure everything is in its place
before we open the doors. Thank you for all you do for
the Auxiliary and Aerie.
Deb Conrad, Madam President
Greetings brothers and sisters
What a great month of June we had.
The #595 Eagles Riders B.A.D. Ride was amazing. They
did a great job raising over $2,000 for diabetes. We had a
good turnout for Colorado State Convention June 20th
through the 23rd. A big thank you to Joe Burns and Sue
Reigles for chairing the event, It was a great success.
Also thank you to all who worked behind the scenes to
make it possible.
I want to send out a big Welcome to our new Auxiliary
sisters: Mellisa Sedillo, Linda Roper and Lorna Woodwell.
Don't forget them after they have been initiated. Always
try to greet each new and old sister and make them feel
welcome. Your friendliness may help them decide to
become a more active member. Happy birthday to all my
sisters and brothers that have birthdays this month.
Thank you Cheryl for doing July's charity for diabetes and
liver cancer. The August charity will be Special Olympics
for kids and suicide prevention for kids chaired by the
Junior Eagles. Please help them make August a successful
month.
I was very fortunate to be able to go to the National
Convention in Louisville Kentucky and will have a report
in my next letter. I would honestly say I'm the turtle in
the race and the race is a marathon.
Deb Conrad, Madam President

Loosing Larry was such a shock. Each day is a new beginning. The bumps in

you from the bottom of my heart. God Bless you for the event you had for
us. My life feeling so up side down and you have all been so loving and

without you.

News from the Eagle Riders Wow, summer is flying by fast but there is still a lot
of good riding ahead of us. Our monthly “Fun
Runs” will continue in the upcoming months so
watch for flyers in the Aerie and announcements
on Facebook.
In July we raised over $330 with our Thursday
night snack and a Friday night Lasagna. Proceeds
from these types of events during the 2nd half of the
year benefit Colorado Discover Ability. Kelly
Albright is the mastermind behind most of our
meals and she sure knows how to cook. Please
come give us a try, you won’t be disappointed.
August events include: Thursday August 1st, we
will be serving “Pork Street Tacos” at 5:30pm. On
Saturday Night, August 17th at 5:00pm, we will be
hosting another “track Concession Stand” during
the Bristol NASCAR race. We cook and serve
track favorites like burgers, chicken tenders, fries,
corn dogs and, of course, Kelly’s Funnel Cake in
the Social Room
Thanks to everyone who has supported our
efforts! If there is a way that our group can help
any of you with your fund-raising efforts, don’t be
afraid to ask.

Life Line Screening is scheduled to be at the Aerie on
August 12th offering to provide people in the Grand
Junction area five non-invasive health screening
methods to identify risk factors that can lead to
cardiovascular disease, stroke, peripheral artery
disease and osteoporosis. They are offering these five
screens for $149. Look for posters at the Aerie with
instructions on how to register for the screening and a
$10 off coupon.
Are preventive health screenings right for you?
Preventive health screening for cardiovascular disease,
stroke and other chronic conditions are extremely
valuable for adults age 50+, or age 40+ with risk
factors for these conditions: diabetes, high cholesterol,
high blood pressure, obesity, a history of smoking, and
a family history of stroke and/or heart disease. The
health screenings offered by Life Line Screening are
only part of your health story—when combined with
the care provided by your doctor, they provide a full
health screening picture.

Gail (Lunceford) Davidson was living in Alhambra, CA in
1973. She was a little bored and worried that life might
be passing her by when she listened to the pitch from a
U.S. Navy recruiter, “Join the Navy and see the world.” A
few weeks later, she was inducted into the Navy during
November in Los Angeles, CA followed by 10 weeks of
boot camp at the Naval Training Center in Orlando, FL.
Reflecting on her boot camp training, Gail said, “I loved
boot camp. Physical training wasn’t a big deal. We spent
time on the obstacle course, but if we didn’t like the
obstacle, we could just walk around it.“ She was proud to
be in the Navy, but her father was even prouder. On her
first leave after boot camp, her father (a navigator in the
Army Air Corps during WW2) picked her up and it was
straight to the American Legion Post so he could show
her off in uniform.
After boot camp,
Gail was assigned
to VAQ Squadron
130 (the Home of
the Whales) based
at Naval Air Station
(NAS) Alameda,
California as an
o p e r a t i o n s
specialist. The
squadron's primary
mission was operating KA-3B tanker aircraft that were
often assigned to carriers. After Gail completed flight
training for air crews, she was occasionally allowed to go
on flight missions. The highlight was landing on a carrier
in a KA-3B.
In July of 1974, Gail was one of the first 400 female
sailors to be assigned to NAS Adak, Alaska. She describes
NAS Adak as her worst duty station. Her Senior Chief
ordered her to “dig some worms” so he could go fishing.
She refused on the grounds that this activity was not part
of her duties and it went downhill from there.
Fortunately, she was transferred to NAS Long Beach,
California two months later.
During early 1975, she was deployed to NAS Guam
where she was one of a staff of 27 operating the fuel
farm. She remembers this as her best duty station of her
Navy career. She said, “I was the only female at the fuel
farm. For the first few weeks they were playing a lot of
practical jokes on me and I really had to be alert so I
wasn’t fooled. After a few weeks they accepted me as
“one of the guys,” and it became like having 26 brothers
looking out for me.” While on Guam, she was also
involved with intake screening for Viet Nam refugees
after the fall of Saigon. She remembers that it was really
sad to see the poor medical conditions and lack of
nutrition of the refugees as they arrived on Guam in C-5
cargo planes.
Gail enjoyed her time on Guam, but developed a terminal
case of island fever and was happy to leave when she
was honorably discharged from the Navy in Guam during
November 1977 as a Third Class Petty Officer. She did,
however, spend the next 10 years at various Navy bases
as a civilian while married to a career Master Chief.
Summing up her Navy career in a sentence, she said, “It
was the best experience of my life.”
She moved to Grand Junction in 1993 while working with
Disabled American Veterans (DAV) helping disabled vets
file and follow-up claims for their benefits. Gail medically
retired from DAV in 2003 and joined the #595 Auxiliary
in 2002.
Aerie #595 salutes Gail for her service in the Navy. She is
a frequent visitor at the Aerie (usually accompanied by
her sister Loretta). The next time you see her at the
Aerie, take a minute and thank her for her service.
Editor’s note: An Aerie #595 Veteran Salute is scheduled to appear in the Eagle Pride on monthly basis. If you are an Aerie #595 veteran, we hope to run your story. Please submit a photo, sit down and tell us your story.
