EAST HILLS MORAVIAN CHURCH EVENTS
MARCH 2017
A Publication of East Hills Moravian Church
The Star
Volume 60, No. 2 March 2017
“Salutary Coincidence”
This year Ash Wednesday, a movable holy day which marks the beginning of Lent, falls on March 1st,
which is the 560th anniversary of the organization of the Moravian Church. Both observances
embody themes of repentance and personal recommitment to Jesus Christ. Ashes on our forehead remind us to turn away from behavior and patterns of thought which
separate us from God or others. There is an element of urgency to our repentance for none of us
know our length of life. As a token of mortality, ashes can also prompt us to consider our life as a
whole. What will be our legacy? Will our presence on earth have made the world a better place for
others or have amounted to little more than an extended exercise in self-gratification? It seems to me that the founding of the Moravian Church in 1457 can also be interpreted as a
collective act of repentance and recommitment by a group of believers who earnestly believed that
Christ’s example and God’s grace made it possible for them to break free from the tangle of sinful
behavior, injustice and oppression which characterized the society in which they lived. According to
Gregory, an early Moravian leader:
“What made a Christian was not doctrine or what he or she believed, but that a person lived his
or her life according to the teachings of Jesus Christ. He described these first Moravians as
“people who have decided once and for all to be guided only by the gospel and example of
our Lord Jesus Christ and his holy apostles in gentleness, humility, patience, and love for our
enemies.“ From: http://www.moravian.org/the-moravian-church/history/
The apostle Paul notes that offering our lives up to God “as a living sacrifice” is “true and proper
worship.” Faith is more a matter of knowing God and following Jesus than it is knowing about God
and Jesus. The calendrical coincidence of Ash Wednesday and the anniversary of the Moravian Church is a
timely reminder that there will always be a pressing need for repentance and recommitment to our
Lord, Jesus Christ. The world, our nation, our communities and our congregation desperately need
those who decide “to be guided only by the gospel and example of our Lord Jesus Christ and his
holy apostles in gentleness, humility, patience, and love for our enemies.”
March 1st is an invitation to recommit ourselves to being “Jesus people” as we reach out in the name
of Christ to all persons but especially to those the Moravian Church has always felt called to seek –
the world-weary, impoverished masses overlooked or rejected by others whether overseas or here in
America. The Moravian Church’s history of mission is reflected in its current demographics with 39,150
of us in North America, 204,980 in the Caribbean and Latin America and 907,830 in Africa.

Preschool News
Mary Kay Brezinsky
I am not sure how many genuine Irishmen we have among our preschool families, but, for a few days
in March, we all get into the spirit of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. The magic of leprechauns hiding
gold around the church, the fun of creating art projects with the color green, green snacks, and
rainbows add to the merriment in our classrooms, and in the process we learn a little bit about St.
Patrick.
SPRING is hopefully in the air! We will discover the wonderment of nature coming back to life after
this LONG winter. We can’t wait for the official start of spring on March 20.
Registration for our classes is ongoing. We are very excited about our new hours: Breakfast Club 8:00
am-9:15 am and Creative Playgroup 11:45 am-4:00 pm. Let us help you with you childcare needs!
We welcome families to come visit our preschool and see all the exciting things happening here.
Please recommend us to your friends and neighbors.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS for our annual Bunny Breakfast on April 8. There are two seatings; one at
8:30 am and another at 10:00 am. We also offer a plant sale and silent auction. ALL PROCEEDS
BENEFIT THE PRESCHOOL. Tickets go on sale March 17. Ticket forms will be available on the door of
the church office.
Church Council
East Hills held the annual church council meeting on Sunday, January 22, following the 10:30 am
worship service. The following were elected to serve on the boards of East Hills. The Board of Elders is
charged with the spiritual care and oversight of the congregation while the Board of Trustees is
charged with the oversight of the temporal affairs of the congregation. A leadership chart is posted
on the church news bulletin board detailing which person serves on a committee and/or what areas
they are responsible for. Should you have any questions or suggestions regarding East Hills, please
contact the appropriate board member.

military, or in the job force twice a year. If you are a young adult or know of a young adult, please
give his/her mailing address to Lucy Thompson; 610-691-2708 or [email protected] or Bobby Shimer;
610-868-0179 or [email protected]. The young adult will be added to our list and receive a
package from us in April. Many of the young adults receiving a box are thrilled to receive it and
enjoy the food and fun contained inside. We also need bakers to supply two dozen baked items,
individually wrapped; or individually wrapped candy; or small fun activities (age does not matter) for
these youth. We are also collecting monetary donations to cover mailing costs. If you wish to
donate, please make checks payable to East Hills Moravian Church, memo: YAM. The deadline for

Cash Cards
At the recent Church Council we approved a deficit budget. Assuming we are buying things we
need, we can bring more money to the church by changing the way we pay for things. Cash cards
are a win-win, and we can use them for our everyday purchases. If we all use cash cards, it adds up!
Just a few examples:
Claire’s, Panera, Barnes & Noble-9%
Carter’s, Macy’s, Osh Kosh-10%
Children’s Place-2%
Gymboree, Payless, Bath/Body Works-13%
LL Bean, Land’s End-16%
There are many other available cash cards. If you are interested in a cash card that Louise does not
have in stock, just order it from her and she will have it for you the next week, or if you are curious
about a merchant that is not on her list, just ask and Louise will look into it. Thank you for your support
of our ministry at East Hills Moravian Church!
