Sivan,Tammuz/Av/Elul 5775
The 91st Annual Fundraiser Celebra-
tion held at EMJC on June 14 to honor
Cantor Sam Levine and his wife Court-
ney Walsh was a huge success thanks to
the diligence of Sally Hipscher and
Michele Isaacson, co-chairwomen. They
were ably assisted by their committee
Stephanie Luxenberg, Amy Nitzky,
Debbie Schechtman, Marsha Solomon,
and Audrey Korelstein. The ambience
was festive, the food delicious and the
speeches short! Howard Honigman and
his guitar presented Cantor Sam with a
song parody. Aliza Avital and chorus
members also honored Cantor Sam in
song.

THOUGHTS FROM RABBI MATT CARL
In Parshat Sh’lah Lekha (also simply called Sh’lah), we are presented with the term “Eretz Zavat Halav
u’Dvash”, referring to the land of Israel as a “land flowing with milk and honey.” Those of us with a sense of
food history know that the dominant food sweetener of our people for most of our history was not cane sugar
(and obviously not high-fructose corn syrup), as sugar cane is a product of tropical regions. It was not intro-
duced to the Middle East until the 7th Century, by Muslims who brought it from its native India. In biblical cui-
sine, then, it was honey that sweetened most foods.
But wait! Even when we talk about honey, we may not be talking about what we, as American eaters,
are used to in our food. The d’vash of the statement refers to date honey. That is, the guts (or the syrup) from
inside a date, not the stuff bees make. (Bees are pretty much involved in everything relating to fruit, though, in
some way, so let’s not discount them totally; either way, bees are not directly involved.) Although it is also
technically called ‘honey’, it is not what we typically imagine when we say the word.
Hang on, it gets harder to imagine! The halav of the statement isn’t what we think of when we think of
milk, since cows weren’t running around the land, either. We remember our ancestors as shepherds and goat-
herders. So why do most of us, I believe, imagine the milk of old coming, like most milk of today, from cows?
Sheep and goats dominated among middle eastern livestock until very recently and certainly the milk referenced
flowed from sheep, goats or both. But not from cows!
As readers, it is natural and fitting that we would imagine the milk and honey of the Torah looking like,
tasting like, and being derived from the same sources as the milk and honey we drink and eat. Any reader of any
text does that: we have to imagine things mostly as we are familiar with them. This is part of the natural process
of both reading and imagining. And yet, as adults, we know that most of history is neither as different as fairy
tales make it out to be nor as similar as our sometimes-lazy imaginations let it be. The lives our ancestors led
were filled with the stresses of work and relationships and punctuated by the joys that these things brought.
Their goals and challenges were bettering themselves and those they loved in physical ways and in spiritual
growth. They weren’t so different than we are. And yet, in so many ways, they were more different than we
readily imagine.
Far from trivia, this knowledge hopefully brings us to deep meaning in the Parsha and in Torah general-
ly. When we read the Torah as if everyone looked, ate and thought like we do, we are missing the Sitz Im Leb-
en, the historical context we need as sophisticated learners. But what if we did the opposite? If we always had to
see Torah in its scientifically-proven historical context, we would read ourselves right out of the stories. We
wouldn’t see Torah’s lessons, rules or philosophies as applying to us, but to some other people who didn’t dress
like us, speak our language or understand our world. Instead, by engaging in a balanced reading, we can truly
taste the mix of optimism and challenge, the sweetness and the tang of the land flowing with milk and honey.

REMEMBERING Dr. Warren Weinstein by Naomi Aronowitz
As many of you might know Dr. Warren Weinstein (July
3, 1941-January 15, 2104) was killed in Afghanistan. The
United States government tried to break up an al-Qaeda
cell not realizing that an American, Dr. Weinstein, was in
prison there. He worked in Pakistan for 7 years and was
about to come home to his wife, daughters, and two grand-
children. Three years ago in August Dr. Weinstein was
captured and could not escape. Pleading for his life, Dr.
Weinstein was on the news several times, asking the
American government and Israel for help. Unfortunately
he was not released.
I knew Warren for most of my life. In the old days many
people went to the Catskill Mountains for the summer. It
was there that my older sister Marcia met her husband.
Warren was the younger brother, and he was about 15
years old when I first met him. The family practiced Con-
servative Judaism but Warren became very religious. He
went to Chaim Berlin Yeshiva and ate only Glatt Kosher
food.
When Warren was 19 his mother sent him to the Island of
Jamaica where she had a black friend. Warren was a very
adventurous person. He came home with a Jamaican ac-
cent and he became an Atheist.
Dr. Weinstein was a genius and he spoke 8 languages flu-
ently. Eventually he got his PhD in International Affairs at
Columbia University. It was there that he met his wife
Elaine, a Jewish woman, and they had two daughters.
They lived in Africa on the Ivory Coast, Belgium and
many other interesting places. When his daughters were
older, Elaine wanted her children to have roots so they
lived in Maryland, near Washington, DC. Warren was
working for the World Bank until he went to work in Paki-
stan.
I will always remember Warren trying to teach my sister
and me Hebrew when we were 15. We did not take it seri-
ously, but he did manage to teach us the Modeh Ani, the
morning prayer, which I can still recite today. He also
took us to cocktail parties at the United Nations when we
were about 19 years old. I was so impressed when I heard
Warren speaking so many languages to the Black dele-
gates. He never got confused as he went from one language
to another.
We enjoyed the best Passover seders at his house in Crown
Heights where he would lead the seder like a rabbi. Warren
I will always remember you . Rest in peace .

Sisterhood had a busy year and we are now winding down for the
summer. Some of our highlights in the past year included the screen-
ing of the movies, “Fill the Void” and “Ida”, a Book and Author
Supperette with Sonia Taitz, a Hanukkah party, a Sephardic food event and Sister-
hood Shabbat. We ended the year on a high note with a successful and well attend-
ed Twilight Dinner honoring Toby Sanchez. It was a lively event with good food,
good friends and lots of dancing. A good time was had by all.
We thank everyone who participated in our events this past year and wish all our
members and friends a happy, healthy and restful summer.
Through a variety of Jewish themed programs, we aim to promote friendship and
support for our beloved EMJC. One of our goals for the future is to appeal to an
intergenerational group of women. Start thinking of ideas for next year. We want
your input!

EMJC's Assistant High Holiday Cantor Uses His Voice For Performance, Politics: Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen, 21 Monday, June 1, 2015 from THE JEWISH WEEK
In 2012, Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen was the first freshman to win Princeton University's Handel Singing Competition.
The Prospect Heights native, now a 21-year-old senior, is driven by two passions: music and politics. In junior
high, he began singing with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, a preeminent children’s choir that exposed Cohen to both
contemporary and classical music. He appeared with iconic, pop artists including Elton John and Sting, and soon
became comfortable performing at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.
For Cohen, music has always been a way to connect with others and participate in tradition. With his unique sta-
tus as a countertenor, meaning he can sing higher than most women, Cohen saw his time at Princeton as a way of
pursuing his intellectual curiosity about the relatively idiosyncratic music he is dedicated to, such as baroque
opera and chamber music, by researching its history.
Singing has also connected Cohen to his Jewish roots. For seven years he has served as assistant cantor at East
Midwood Jewish Center, where he helps lead High Holiday services. “Singing and performing is a lot about con-
necting with people,” said Cohen. “When people leave a performance I want them to feel fulfilled.”

Continued from page 6
Cohen also uses his voice for social issues. His interest in the Middle East was first piqued by his time as a
Bronfman Fellow in 2010, during which he studied in Israel and developed a social action project, and then
fully catalyzed by the clashes on his campus caused by the 2012 conflict in Gaza. Princeton, conventionally
viewed as the “quiet Ivy,” has managed to cultivate a reputation as comparatively free of divisive political
debate. However, in 2012, students were looking to engage in a political issue but lacked pre-existing in-
frastructure that could lead them to productive debate.
“There was a real need for constructive dialogue on campus,” said Cohen. In response, Cohen helped
launch a Muslim-Jewish dialogue group and started a chapter of J Street U, the campus arm of the non-
profit liberal advocacy group.
Singing for his supper: Cohen plans to pursue a career in music, and while still in school, performed the
lead role in the first modern revival of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s opera, “Demofoonte” at Austria’s histor-
ic Theater an der Wein.

You know tonight we’re making the scene, For Courtney Walsh and Sam Levine, With his voice so supple, you know that couple Is cool. It seem that everything that they do, Runs smoothly just because of these two, With their best friend Audrey , things are never tawdry At shul. CHORUS 1 Courtney Walsh and Sam Levine, He’s like the king and she’s the queen, They got Mattan and Micah who are very likable, too. And if you think for you there’s no hope He’ll teach you the haftorah trope, So you can be a maftir, and feel better after it’s through. It's been a decade since they arrived, And in that time we've pretty much thrived, Shabbat in the Round makes a gorgeous sound it is true, And when he sings along with the choir, They set the sanctuary on fire, As to shabbat a bimb I'm going out on a limb- It's the best thing that anyone could do.
CHORUS 2 Courtney Walsh and Sam Levine, He’s like the king and she’s the queen, They got Mattan and Micah who are very likable, too. And on all Shalosh Regalim, even more Yomim Noraim, He leads the kind of service that makes gentiles nervous, Cause everyone would rather be a Jew. So lift you glass and kick back a schnapps Our Cantor Sam and Courtney are tops, But while we’re giving credit we'll also let it be known, Just 'cause tonight we toast you in song, Don’t think that if you do something wrong, That we would fail to mention, bring it to your attention, Like,…. Sam, you made the musaf too long. CHORUS 3 Courtney Walsh and Sam Levine, He’s like the king and she’s the queen, They got Mattan and Micah who are very likable, too. We wish them life and health through the years, Many laughs and very few tears, But be they sad or ducky, we should be so lucky,

My wife, Miriam, and I just returned from the wedding of our granddaughter, Ayelet Menche to Aaron Krom, in
Israel. The celebrations began with the auf ruf of the groom on the Shabbat before the wedding. It was held in his
parents’ village, Rosh Pina, just three miles downhill from
Safed, the city of the Kabbalists. The bride and her friends led
us in the Kabbalat Shabbat service. The most moving part of the
service was when we sang “Lecha Dodi” (“Come My Be-
loved”), welcoming the Shabbat Bride which was written 500
years ago, three miles from where we were praying.
The wedding was held outdoors in Neot Kidumim, a Biblical
garden, in the foothills of Jerusalem. Many of the guests were
friends and family came from the US and England. Three of the
guests who came from the US were friends of our daughter at
the Rabbi Harry Halpern Day School, forty years ago. I was
given the honor of chanting the seventh blessing under the
chupah. When I came to the passage, “who created joy and
gladness, groom and bride, mirth, song, delight and rejoicing,
love and harmony and peace and companionship. Soon, LORD
our God, may there ever be heard in the cities of Judah and in
the streets of Jerusalem voices of joy and gladness, voices of
groom and bride”, all 300 guests started enthusiastically singing
along with me.
The celebrations continued for several more days with festive
meals- the sheva brachot. Miriam and I concluded our trip in Jerusalem. We had brought an EMJC Sefer Torah
on the plane with us which we presented to an Ethiopian congregation in Jerusalem. Miriam and I visited the air
raid shelter which serves as the Ethiopian synagogue. The leaders of the congregation profusely thanked us and
EMJC for the gift of the Sefer Torah. We felt that we had performed an important mitzvah. In Jerusalem, we also
visited our granddaughter, Talia, who is spending her gap year between high school and college, studying at a
midrasha (seminary) in the Old City. We also found time to attend four classes at the Fuchsberg Center for Con-
servative Judaism. The classes were taught by some of the most brilliant and stimulating rabbis and teachers we
ever had the privilege to study with. We urge you to make time for classes at the Fuchsberg Center, the next time
you are in Jerusalem.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Sandy Goldhaber

come.” Our new 12 week NightShul program was not only an ambitious undertaking but was a
success in its content and its attendance. In the coming year NightShul will run from October
through June. This year’s meeting featured, for the first time, comprehensive reports on the
year’s work and next year’s goals from Rabbi Matt Carl, Cantor Sam Levine, and Audrey Ko-

Israel Day Parade 2015 by Riva Gilman
The New York Post touted the Israel Day Parade "Miles of Smiles." My friend, Joe Marino, and I marched like
"chalutz-niks" in the heat working our way up Madison Avenue toward E. 66th St. donning American flag caps and
holding folded-up umbrella chairs like Torahs. Nature cooperated and sent down intermittent sprinkles of sun show-
ers. During the parade I snapped pictures of what was most meaningful to me: a hand-painted mural of a bride and
groom under a "chupah" in Jerusalem, signs honoring "shmitah", two teenage girls wearing Herzl T-shirts, students
from Yeshivah of Flatbush Elementary School (my alma mater), and, of course, a banner from East Midwood He-
brew Day School. The joyous mood, Jewish sights and beating musical sounds airlifted my "neshamah" to the Holy
Land of Israel. My guard came down and I spontaneously screamed, yelled, and chanted "Am Yisrael Chai!" "Od
Avinu Chai!" "Chai V'Kayam!" "Baruch Hashem!" At precisely 3:30 p.m., the last procession passed followed by an
eery silence as policemen started to push metal sidewalk barriers together. A sudden sadness swept over me as peo-
ple walked toward a concert held elsewhere. I found it hard to believe that there were thousands of joyful Jewish men,
women, and children here just a short time ago. Who would know?
Who would ask? The moment reminded me of the scene in the movie "Back to the Future" when the Delorean time
machine vanishes into thin smoke speeding into the past and back to the future over and over again to come into ex-
istence in another time but in the same place. The thought chilled me for it was an apt analogy of what afflicts the
unity of the Jewish people: impermanence; invisibility; a vague or no trace of memory; being hated, murdered, op-
pressed; not forgetting; for remembering and for being remembered for no longer being there; fear; anger; shame;
embarrassment; self-blame and guilt. A momentary loss of joy does not mean that we have to be pessimistic about the
future. These new thoughts gave me a more realistic perspective and hope for Jewish people and for the State of Isra-
el. Life will go on and so will the Jewish people. Am Yisroel Chai!

EAST MIDWOOD DAY SCHOOL NEWS
April ushered in Spring at the East Midwood Hebrew Day School
showering us with a month filled with events that were both somber
and joyous. We commemorated events in our Jewish history that must
never be forgotten and celebrated events that will last into our future.
After Passover break we returned to school to find the ELA and Math
State Exams on our doorstep.
During this time we welcomed Elly Gross to speak to our students
and faculty about her experiences as a Holocaust survivor for Yom
HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. She has written several
books geared to children about her experiences and is a painter as
well. Her story of survival was riveting and miraculous. Thank you to
Mr. Galamidi for contacting the Museum of Jewish Heritage and
making the connection. A week later we commemorated Yom
Hazikaron, the day of remembrance for the fallen Israeli soldiers who
perished in defense of the State of Israel. A somber and emotional
presentation was made by Mr. Shani, formerly of the IDF, and our 7th
and 8th grade students. We stood for a moment of silence in memory
of those soldiers. Afterwards, all classes placed commemorative, sym-
bolic flowers underneath our Israeli flag in front of the school. Thank
you to Mrs. Elmkies and our middle school students for working so
hard to make the flowers. The next day we celebrated Yom
Ha'atzmaut, Israel Independence Day, with joy, pride and fervor. With
special thanks to our PTA and volunteer moms, a virtual Israeli
“shuk” was set up where students and staff were able to purchase
lunch consisting of authentic Israeli foods and snacks. Thank you as
well to Mr. Tzvi and Ms. Gidekel for providing our students with
music and Israeli folk dancing, Mr. Shani and Mrs. Amsalem for giv-
ing our students a taste of what it is like to train to be an IDF soldier,
and Mr. Dratel, Mrs. Elmkies and Mrs. Nourieli for doing a lovely
Star of David art project with our students.
Our “dress down day” included a first ever Student/Teacher basket-
ball game! What a surprise and delight for our student body! Students
in grades 3-8 lined the gym and rooted for their teams. Our student
team consisted of the top 10 students who raised the most money for
Chesed for Bnai Raphael’s Passover food pantry. They were: Josh Z.,
Josh E., Joey C., Steven S., Jesse S., Jacob K., Ian K., Bradley L.,
Allen G., and Jacob I. Our teacher team included Mr. Phifer, Jorge,
Mr. Galamidi, Mrs. Zargar, Ms. Rosa, Mickey, Mr. Shani, Mr.
Wolbrom and Mrs. Menachem. Our referee was Mr. Alpiner and
cheerleaders (for both teams) were Mrs. Pirraglia, Mrs .Ligorsky,
Mrs. Elmkies and Mrs.Weichselbaum. Teachers playing and on the
sidelines joined the festivities by purchasing tee-shirts to show
“ruach”, school spirit. A group of 4th grade students even cheered on
high for the teacher team. Our student basketball players were phe-
nomenal in showcasing their skills. Our teachers played with so much
heart and determination. The climate of our school went through the
roof! Final scores: Game 1- Students 16/Teachers 4, Game 2- Stu-
dents 8/Teachers 15. Fun, excitement and exhaustion were had by
all!!! I would be remiss in not giving a special thank you and kudos to
Mr. Galamidi for spearheading these special events with the collabo-
ration of all of our dedicated and spirited teachers. Kol HaKavod to
you all! April has also seen a trip to the Brooklyn Public Library
made by our second grade classes with their teachers Ms. S. Bleeker
and Ms. Rosa, a trip to Brooklyn College to see a show for our UPK
students with their teachers Ms. Rachel, Ms. Kim, Ms. Donna and Ms.
Cori and an upcoming 6th grade Art trip with Mr. Dratel. With less
than two months left to the school year, we are looking forward to
several other special school events such as the Lag B’Omer picnic
among others. We will keep you posted with dates as they come clos-
er on the calendar. In the meantime, if you have any questions or con-
cerns please feel free to contact me via the school office or e-mail,
[email protected], or Mrs. Elmkies our Administrative Su-
pervisor. Remember that the administration, teachers and parent body
of the East Midwood Hebrew Day School are joined in partnership
with one goal in mind, the academic and social/emotional growth and
success of our children.
With best wishes, Mrs. S. Weichselbaum Principal
REBECCA GROSSMAN PARTICIPATES in HaZamir
Rebecca Grossman, daughter of Rachelle and Randy Grossman, was among 350 Jewish teens from 26 communities in 2 countries
that participated in the Annual HaZamir - The International Jewish High School Choir Gala Concert at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln
Center this spring. Dr. Ruth Westheimer was honored for her strong commitment to the organization and the preservation of Jewish
music. The program included selections in 3 languages and a wide variety of musical genre. This was Rebecca's third year with
HaZamir and she looks forward to the 2015-2016 season.
JOSH SUCHER WINS ON “ASK ME ANOTHER”
On June 13 Josh Sucher, son of Aviva and Michael Sucher, participated in the NPR show’s “Ask Me Another” which is more or less
a lively quirky game show pitting contestants against one another. Josh was the best man left standing. Congratulations Josh for your
win. The show is recorded at the Bell House in Brooklyn.

once again be hosting the Israeli Scouts Friendship Caravan. For those of you
who attend past amazing performances, you know we are in for a treat once
again with a new and once again energetic performance by this group of out-
standing teenagers from Israel.
For those of you who are not familiar, the Caravan is made of a select group of
ten Israeli Scouts who will be entering their senior year in High School. They
are true emissaries representing Israel through song, dance, spirit and a bit of
education to their audiences. Please click on this link for a sample of what they are all about!!

ISRAELI SCOUTS’ FRIENDSHIP CARAVAN RETURNS
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR AUTHORS: Ellen Levitt and Alyssa Katz
Ellen is the author of Walking Manhattan, This book is written with many people in mind: the tourists who have nev-
er before visited Manhattan as well as those returning to the Big Apple; the residents who want to ramble through parts
of Gotham with which they are less familiar; the “I’ve seen it all” New Yorker who is willing to consult a new source
and find “new” sights and sounds that interest them. Readers can pick and choose how and where they investigate
Manhattan by consulting this new guide.
This guidebook will help readers to appreciate more fully the author's selection of unique things to see and experience
throughout Manhattan. It points out the many beautiful and intriguing sights; the history to be learned; the joyful as
well as sad aspects of Manhattan life throughout the years. Landmarks and parks, schools and eateries, art and sport,
big and bold sites as well as modest and small.
Alyssa’s new book The Influence Machine: the U.S. Chamber of Commerce & The Corporate Capture of American
Life is published by Book Court(163 Court Street, Brooklyn, NY ). She can be reached at
