East Providence Parent Information Night

PARCC Testing

January 21, 2015

What Happened to NECAP? The New England Common Assessment Program is being

phased out in Rhode Island and the other NE states who use it.

This assessment measured the Grade Level and Grade Span Expectations (our state content standards for ELA and Math).

Since we are no longer teaching to those standards, the assessment to measure them is invalid.

The Science NECAP will remain in place for grades 4,8 and 11.

In Math, students will be doing…

Rhode Island Department of Education www.ride.ri.gov www.facebook.com/ReadySetGoCommonCore

Less: More:

Skimming the surface of a lot of math topics

Prioritizing concepts and learning at greater depth

Relying on worksheets Applying math to real-world situations

Learning math “tricks”Discussing math concepts and problems

Disconnected math instructionTopics that connect and build off each other

In ELA, students will be doing…

Rhode Island Department of Education www.ride.ri.gov www.facebook.com/ReadySetGoCommonCore

Less: More:

Reading just fictionReading a blend of non-fiction and fiction

Learning vocabulary from listsLearning vocabulary from texts students are reading

Reading of simple texts Reading complex texts

Learning from lectures Learning from texts

How Will PARCC Be Different? For students:

Test quality will mirrorhigh-quality coursework

Is computer-based, interactive

Measures the skills and knowledge students need to succeed in college and careers

Produces timely information, allowing teachers to tailor instruction to students’ needs

Includes embedded supports for English language learners and students with disabilities

Technology Readiness District committed to provide stable, easy to use, and well-staffed testing

environments to encourage all students meet with success on testing days.

District has purchased over 300 new computers and will provide on-site technology support as well as testing coordinators for teachers and students to immediately address any issues that may arise during testing days.

New laptop carts at Elementary Schools are fully functional and are not for testing only…all new computers can be used to by teachers and students to enrich teaching and learning before and after testing days.

All schools are fully wireless

The field test last spring was very successful.

60% of the PARCC ELA /Literacy assessment will involve writing.

• Literary Analysis• Prose Constructed Response• Research Simulation Task• Students writing will be assessed through their

writing, not by multiple choice questions about writing/grammar.

More than 60% of the math questions will focus on the “major work of the grade.”

• Major work of the grade defined in the PARCC Model Content Framework

• Not all standards will be assessed with equal points – more questions will be asked about the major work of the grade

• The major work of the grade is the critical content students need to master to understand content in next grades

• These are identified at the beginning of each Eureka Unit

PARCC will feature many different types of questions.

• There will be questions that require students to :• do something – write an essay or create a model, draw a

graph• select a response from options – not always 4 choices• provide an answer• interact with technology – drag and drop
