Nicole, 25. Nurse, Canadian—Big Indochina, September 2009“I liked that you got to see different parts of

countries. We weren’t only visiting the bigcities, we went off to smaller stops. I felt likemore of a traveller than a tourist – that’s what Ireally liked about it.”

Eddie, 25. Firefighter, Australian—Asian Adventure, Aug 2009

“It was nice to be travelling with peoplearound the world that were my age. I knewthey’d have similar interests & want to do thesame kind of things that I did. I definitely feel itwas an adventure trip with culture, not just arelaxing trip.”

Dana, 28. Dentist, American—Vietnam Explorer, July 2009

“I looked at doing it myself & couldn’t havedone it as cheaply, in the same timeframe.I appreciated walking into a hotel, being givenmy key & having a guaranteed place to stay –that saved a lot of time. Arrive, chuck your bagin & get straight out to do the great optionalactivities.”

Paris, 23. IT Consultant, British—Asian Adventure, May 2009

“Other than flights to & from Asia, you canget by with very little money once you’re ontour. All our transport was included, plus hotels& breakfasts. You got people from all walks oflife, I think it was a great price that made thetour accessible to anybody.”

Matt, 28. Law student, American—Asian Adventure, July 2009

“All our accommodation was really good. We stayed in guesthouses a couple of timeswhich were really different & interesting. I reallyliked it because this variety made it a reallyauthentic experience. It really gave you achance to meet some of the locals to see whatthey do. It wouldn’t have been the same if we’dstayed in hotels the whole time.”

“We got a great balance of time. Since there are othercouples & lots of singles, you never feel the pressure to bewith either your partner or the group 100% of the time. Usually at night, the group would walk to the local market, where we could either eat together - just the two of us, or withthe rest of the group.”

14ON THE ROAD

One of the best things about your trip to Asia will definitely be getting around on our manydifferent modes of transport.

From 4-wheels, to 2-wheels, to no wheels (withpaddles & outboard motors instead), there are upto 10 different types of transport involved on aContiki Asia trip.

Unlike our Contiki tours in other parts of theworld, we run smaller groups of up to 25 peoplein Asia, so our coach transport ranges in size. Butwe always use private, air-con coaches instead oflocal ones, which means we can get you to moreremote places, quickly & easily.

To reduce travelling time between destinations,we use internal flights with reliable VietnamAirlines, giving you more time in the places thatcount, so you won’t miss stuff.

After that, that’s where the fun really begins –overnight trains, rickshaws, tuk-tuks, long tailboats, bicycles, wooden canoes & a traditionalChinese junk boat are some of the Contikitransport selection.

Much of our transport is private, which representsfantastic value. From the minibuses, to Mekongboats – you won’t be squashed in with a bunch ofother travelers. You’ll have the space to reallyrelax, enjoy the travel time & take it all in.

How much luggage can I bring? It is strongly recommended to keep your luggage toa maximum of one suitcase and one carry-on bag. There are some things to consider when packingfor a Contiki Asia tour:

• Due to the large number of flights on Contiki Asiatours, your luggage needs to meet the weight &restrictions imposed by airlines. These limits areimposed by the airlines, not by Contiki. Contiki isnot responsible for any costs incurred byoverweight luggage.

• You are responsible for carrying your ownluggage. At times this will be in hotels withoutelevators (as is common to the region), or ontovarious forms of transport, such as trains.

• At hotels with elevators, there maybe porters toassist with bags, but this is not guaranteed.

It is suggested to keep your luggage to a maximumsuitcase size of 73cm x 50cm x 25cm (29" x 20" x 10")& maximum weight of 20 kg (44lbs) plus one smallhand/day bag that can be carried with you. NOEXTERNAL METAL FRAME BACKPACKS PLEASE, theirbulky shape makes packing into transports difficult.Use of a backpack/rucksack is suggested, but notrequired. Wheeled suitcases can be used onContiki tours in Asia.

The Contiki Tour Manager may suggest you storeyour main luggage & use a smaller bag for overnightrail journeys, overnight junk boat or overnight stays atguesthouses. A small daypack/backpack of approx26L capacity is suggested.

Contiki reserves the right to refuse to accept largersuitcases on tour. Baggage is carried at the owner’srisk & baggage insurance is strongly recommended.

Local paymentsAs is common for touring in Asia, Contiki also havelocal payments on our Asia tours. They cover thingslike local guides, tipping, transport & includedentrances into sightseeing locations as part of thetour. This brings money to the communities in thecountries that we visit & helps to reduce the overallprice of the tour. Local payments are made on Day1 of the tour, directly to the Tour Manager in $UScash. Information about the local payments can befound below the price panel on each tour page.

Group sizeContiki’s group size in Asia averages around 25, agroup size small enough to have an intimate Asianexperience but big enough to make the groupdynamic rock.

Will I get more information?Upon receipt of final payment, you’ll receive a copyof your Contiki Asia Travelers Guide – an informationbook with all the nitty gritty details about yourholiday. You’ll also receive a comprehensive dailyitinerary including full details & costs of all ourExplore More optional activities available on yourtour, as well as information about departure points &how to get there.Your complimentary Contiki document holder will besent to you along with your travel documents. It’s aconvenient place for your tickets, paperwork &passport & quite useful to use when traveling againin the future. *Contiki reserves the right to substitute an alternativetravel accessory for the Contiki Document Wallet.

In the meantime, contiki.com is also a great source ofinformation on tour departure points, destinationsvisited on our tours & general travelers’ tips, includingour very own wiki: contikipedia.

Brochure authenticityWe have put a great deal of effort into producing thisbrochure. The information given & literature producedby Contiki has been compiled with care & is publishedin good faith. Sometimes, because of circumstancesoutside our control, we have to alter some activitiesdue to seasonal closing or repairs to buildings, etc, especially early or late in the season. If this happens, alternative activities will be arranged.

What do I need for theSapa extension?Offered on the Big Indochina, & all Vietnamdepartures, is the opportunity to visit Sapa inNorthern Vietnam – a region known for its culturaldiversity & stunning scenery. This extension involves a moderate level of physicalactivity, as the tour takes in a hike/trek. You willrequire hiking shoes and a small backpack, or yourTour Manager can organize them in Hanoi.

How much money do I need? You will need to ensure you allow enough money tocover optional lunches & dinners, souvenirs, shopping, drinks, optional activities, entrance fees to some attractions &evening entertainment. When traveling with Contiki in Asia, you’ll find thatyou’ll often be using local currencies, particularly inremote areas. The local currencies encountered ontour are the Riel (Cambodia), Kip (Laos), Baht(Thailand) or Dong (Vietnam). The countries we visitrely largely on cash as opposed to credit cards ortravelers cheques. In the larger cities you’ll find thatestablished stores will accept credit cards readily, while local market stalls will operate on a cash onlybasis – accepting only local currency.Local currency is readily available through cashmachines in each country. Obtaining a small amountof local currency before you travel is also a good idea. ATMs that dispense local currency are widely available. However, you can’t depend solely on a credit/debit cardfor cash as they are not accepted in all areas. We advise you also carry $US cash in small denominationsthat you can use as an alternate form of payment. Please note that travelers cheques are generallyonly accepted in big cities at money exchanges orbanks to change to local currency.

Explore More optional activitiesOptionals are arranged & paid for on tour. By leavingthe final decisions until then you can choose at thesame time as your new friends & you’ll get greatvalue with our specially negotiated rates. Someactivities are seasonal & weather dependent. Our optional activities offered on Contiki Asia toursare operated by 3rd party operators. While everyattempt is made to ensure the safety of all activities, the nature of the region means that public liabilityprotection that is offered in many countries, may notbe applicable in many cases. A waiver will need tobe signed by all tour participants to ensure thatthese conditions are understood & accepted. Wehighly recommend comprehensive travel insurance.

Do I need vaccinations? At the time this brochure went to press (November2009), the following immunizations arerecommended for travelers in Southeast Asia by theCDC (US Centre for Diseases Control & Prevention): • Diphtheria & tetanus • Hepatitis A• Hepatitis B • Typhoid• Rabies • Japanese B EncephalitisMalaria & dengue fever are also an issue within thisregion. You should consult a travel doctor whospecializes in travel medicines or your local doctorto advise on what vaccinations and/or preventativemedicines would be required.Don’t forget to bring with you any medication thatyou may require en route such as antihistamines, antibiotics, etc.

Do I need visas?Depending on your nationality, you may require visasto enter certain countries included in your tour. Youare fully responsible for obtaining all necessary visasprior to the departure of your tour. Contiki is notlegally permitted to knowingly allow anybody whodoes not have a valid visa to join a tour. Visa & other entry & exit conditions (such as currency,arrival/departure taxes, customs & quarantineregulations) change regularly. Consult your travelagent or visit www.travel.state.gov to determinewhich visas you require & how to obtain them.Your passport must have at least six months’ validityremaining when you arrive in Cambodia, Thailand,Vietnam & Laos. Local immigration authorities maydeny entry & deport people who do not meet thisrequirement, even if they intend on staying only for ashort period. Important to consider:1. Visas can take up to six weeks & a fee is normally

charged. 2. Failure to obtain all necessary visas could cause

you to miss part of your tour & will result in youincurring considerable expense & inconvenience.

3. It is better to apply for all visas through your travelagent before you leave home. Be aware that manyvisas can be purchased & arranged on arrival.

4. It is very important that the entry & exit dates arecorrect on the visa. Your travel agent will contactContiki for full details.
