Washington State PTA NEWS

The Supreme Court holds the Washington State Legislature in contempt in the McCleary vs. State of Washington. The Supreme Court heard oral arguments on September 4 regarding the legislature’s lack of a plan to fully fund basic education and returned an order of contempt on September 11. The Supreme Court requires the legislature to provide their plan to the court by the end of the 2015 legislative session.

Washington State PTA is one of 11 founding members of NEWS (Network for Excellent Washington Schools). NEWS is a co-plaintiff in the McCleary case. Washington State PTA has worked diligently through our legislative platform to impact legislative change in redefining basic education through HB 2261 and HB 2776 in 2009 and 2010. These reforms are scheduled to be fully implemented in 2018 and the Supreme Court is demanding the legislature’s plan to implement the required funding to meet the provisions of our constitution.

Plan now to participate in WSPTA’s Focus Day, January 19, 2015 in Olympia. We need to remind our legislators of their duty to the children of our state. “It is the paramount duty of the state to make ample provision for the education of all children residing within its borders.” Article IX, Section 1, Washington State Constitution.

Additional information regarding NEWS and the McCleary lawsuit can be found at http://waschoolexcellence.org/ .

"The world would be a better place if…" – 2014-15 Reflections Theme

If you’re not familiar with the Reflections Program, it is a National PTA and Washington State PTA cultural arts competition. The purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works.

Each year, Reflections challenges students to create art that supports a specific theme. A student may submit an entry in any of six art areas: Visual Arts, Photography, Literature, Music Composition, Dance Choreography, and Film Production.

Stay tuned for more information! Questions about Reflections or want to get involved? Contact Jodi at [email protected].

Math at Home and Reading at Home (MAH & RAH) Curriculum Night Raffle

During Curriculum night, teachers will distribute a RAH/MAH flyer. At the bottom of the flyer is a tear-away sheet where students have a chance to be a “problem solver” and answer the question and enter in the prize raffle for either Rick Riordan’s Greek Gods hardcover book or an OgoSport disc and ball. One winner will be selected from the pool of correct answers. Students must return the tear away/answer to teachers by Monday Sept. 29 for the raffle. The winner will be announced Oct. 1. During curriculum night, be sure to stop by the glass display case by the front of the school to see the plethora of prizes we will giving away!

RAH & MAH is in need of 1 parent volunteer per classroom. If you would like to help, please sign-up on the PTA website or in your child’s classroom on curriculum night. Questions? Contact Loan at [email protected] or Khanh at [email protected]. Thank you to those who have already volunteered!

Calling all Volunteers! Not sure where to start?  Apollo PTA always has jobs that need to be filled and if you are a "worker bee" type, WE NEED YOU!!!

By choosing to be a "General Volunteer", you will be sent an email when there is a job that needs to be filled.  If you can do it, let us know.  If you are unavailable for that job but ready for the next one, let us know that too.

Many hands make light work and our students and teachers need anything we can give them!  :-)
