I recently re-read The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Album. It tells the story of Eddie, an amusement park maintenance man who dies while attempting to save a young girl on a broken ride. Eddie then goes on to meet five people on the “other side.” Some he knows and some he does not but all have either impacted his life or been impacted by his life. All serve to help explain and help Eddie come to terms with his life, a life he sees as a failure.

The book raises some interesting points. The first is the interconnectedness of life. Some of the people Eddie encounters he did not even know or knew as distant acquaintances, yet their lives were irrevocably interwoven. Every life impacts so many others in ways we could never even begin to imagine. How many lives do we touch in our daily lives? Whose day have we brightened by a smile, a kind word, or thoughtful deed? Whose path have we made more difficult, perhaps without even realizing it? Like the proverbial stone creating ripples in the pool of water, our actions have far-reaching effects.

Eddie saw his life as worthless -- he had lost those he had loved and worked at what he saw as a dead-end job, yet he comes to discover that everything had its purpose. How many times in our lives do we search for meaning? In this era of celebrity-hype, busy with the responsibilities of family and home, we can sometimes feel invisible and not the “success” we hoped to be. I believe we are all a part of a great plan that we haven’t even begun to understand. Hopefully, like Eddie in Album’s book, someday it will all be clear.

In the meantime, the EAST COBBER shines a light on the “regular” people right here in East Cobb who impact the quality of life not just in East Cobb, but in Metro Atlanta, and internationally. From the staff and students at Sprayberry High School receiving Georgia’s School of Excellence award to the parents and staff at East Cobb Middle School that came together to sponsor a Challenge Day that inspired students to respect each other and pursue their dreams, and the child care profes-sionals many East Cobb moms and dads rely on (see our Child Care and Preschool Guide, pages 18-27) as well as the unnamed citizens who serve the community through a local club or support group (see pages 60, 61 and 64), this monthly paper intends to make these good people visible by writing about them. Who knows where that ripple effect of kindness ends? I am proud to shine a light on the East Cobbers making a positive difference, now and in the future, and in East Cobb and beyond.

This month’s premiere holiday is Valentine’s Day, when we take a moment to thank the people who have touched our heart and made a difference in our life. Consider this issue and every issue of the EAST COBBER one big Valentine’s Day card from me to you.

Academically, Fellowship is very competitive with high standard achievement test scores and acceptances into the nation’s most prestigious colleges. As a college preparatory, co-ed school, its curriculum is structured to be challenging at each grade level. College preparation begins in elementary school through a rigorous academic curriculum as well as the opportunity to take part in a Math enrichment program. Academically eligible middle school students take advantage of advanced math placement. High school students can choose from diverse Honors and Advanced Placement cours-es both on campus and through the school’s virtual learning program, offering courses such as Chinese, Latin, French,

Fellowship students enjoy a vibrant social culture punctu-ated by educational field trips and experiential programs. Through the summer school study abroad program, Fellowship students will travel to Europe as part of a WWII remembrance tour. Elementary students go on a wide variety of field trips that extend the classroom beyond campus, like Astrotrek, a field trip to the NASA Space Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Middle school and high school students start their year by taking a retreat to Camp Highland and SharpTop Cove, respectively. Through the year, high school students take part in the GO Program, the school’s community service initiative. Community involvement and volunteerism are hallmarks of the Fellowship experience as students average 200 hours of community service before they graduate. Additional extracur-ricular activities include honor societies, service organizations, Bible studies, social clubs, fencing and robotics.

The school’s seasoned coaches have helped Fellowship student athletes fulfill their dreams of playing at the intercol-legiate Division 1 level. The athletic program continues to provide numerous opportunities for students through 22 sanc-tioned GHSA sports. In fact, 83 percent of students participate in at least one sport.

Fellowship’s acclaimed arts program helps students iden-tify and cultivate their artistic talent and skill, annually earning numerous honors and awards. Fellowship’s commitment to the arts is evident as ten performances, plays and events are held annually. sprayberry High school named 2011 Georgia school of Excellence

Sprayberry High School was among 26 schools to be named 2011 Georgia Schools of Excellence by the state Department of Education. Sprayberry High School earned the honor by showing the great-est continuous gains in student achievement over the past three years, based on reading and mathematics performance on the Georgia High School Graduation

Test. Each school will receive the iconic School of Excellence flag and a $1,000 award check from program sponsor, Georgia Natural Gas.

“The School of Excellence validates the efforts of our students and teachers over the past three years. . . . This award helps further define the Sprayberry motto of a ‘culture of excellence.’ We all strive to achieve,” said Ed Wagner, Sprayberry’s principal.

The Georgia Schools of Excellence program identi-fies two winning schools from each congressional district in Georgia: one for the greatest gains criteria, and the other for schools in the state’s top 10 percent (also based on state testing results). To be considered for the award, a school must also make Adequate Yearly Progress for a minimum of three consecutive years, meet or exceed state mean scores in Science and Social Studies, offer a minimum of two Advanced Placement (AP) courses and not be considered a ‘Persistently Dangerous School’ under federal standards.

Cobb County schools have received 53 Georgia School of Excellence awards since the program’s inception in 1984, including 18 in the past five years. In keeping with its mission to engage and enrich the community while remaining fiscally responsible to its con-stituency, the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta (MJCCA) recently announced its intention to sell Shirley Blumenthal Park (SBP), its 32-acre campus located on Post Oak Tritt in East Cobb. The property has been listed with global real estate firm, Jones Lang LaSalle, who is marketing it to targeted buyers.

“The MJCCA has an obligation to all of our members and the greater Jewish community to be good fiscal stew-ards while delivering programs that best suit our families’ needs. Shirley Blumenthal Park did both when it was original-ly created in 1986 and countless children and families have made their way through our preschools, camps, and sports programs over the years,” said Steven Cadranel, upcom-ing president of the MJCCA and chair of the SBP Task Force Committee.

Citing demographic shifts to the East Cobb Jewish com-munity, geographic challenges, and a faltering economy, the MJCCA significantly reduced facility usage at SBP more than two years ago. At that time, it chose to implement a new service model that would utilize strategic partnerships with other East Cobb community and Jewish organizations to help deliver high-quality programming and services to a greater majority of the community.

“We have and will continue to impact Jewish life in East Cobb in a very positive way. One of our most successful

partnerships to date has been with Temple Kol Emeth, the new home of our East Cobb preschool, The Sunshine School. We look forward to pursuing more partnership opportunities with other East Cobb organizations and businesses in the near future,” said MJCCA CEO Gail Luxenberg.

The MJCCA also announced that SBP’s summer day camp program will be moving to Zaban Park in Dunwoody beginning with the summer 2012 camp season. The East Cobb community has been offered many cost-effective incentives to attend camp in Dunwoody this summer, includ-ing free bus transportation to and from East Cobb and sur-rounding areas; pre- and after-camp care at a convenient East Cobb location; a 10% discount for 2012 summer Camp Chai families who experienced their 2011 summer at Shirley Blumenthal Park; special group-mate requests for Shirley Blumenthal Park campers to stay together; a competitively priced summer membership; and the option to attend 100+ different camps.

Challenge Day at East Cobb Middle school

On January 17-20, 2012, the acclaimed day-long Challenge Day program took place at East Cobb Middle School. More than 400 teens and over 100 adults experi-enced the innovative workshop, which is designed to break down barriers and promote school and community environ-ments based on understanding, acceptance, and love. Challenge Day ’12 was sponsored by the East Cobb Middle School Foundation which has raised thousands of dollars in cash and in-kind donations to cover the cost of the program from the California-based nonprofit organization, Challenge Day. This was East Cobb Middle School Foundation’s fifth consecutive year of hosting this event.

At Challenge Day, teenage students, teachers, school counselors, parents, and members of the community were challenged to step out of their comfort zones, open their hearts, and build connections with others. Two trained Challenge Day Leaders guided participants through a carefully-designed series of games, activities, and trust-build-ing exercises that break down the walls of separation and create new levels of empathy and respect. The Challenge

Day program reduces teasing and bullying, teaches tools for peaceful conflict resolution, and inspires teens and adults to work together as forces for positive change in the world.

Motivated by a vision that love and connection are possible in schools, Rich and Yvonne Dutra-St. John created the Challenge Day program in Martinez, California in 1987. Through their years of professional experience with teens and families, Rich and Yvonne recognized that teasing, bul-lying, and other forms of social oppression are symptoms of a greater underlying problem: separation, isolation, and loneliness. Rich and Yvonne designed the Challenge Day program to build connection and forgiveness between young people, and to inspire youth to become positive forc-es of change in their schools and communities. Challenge Day was formed as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in 2001. Today, its programs have reached hundreds of thousands of young people across North America and around the world.

Margie Hatfield scholarship seeks

ApplicantsThe East Cobb County Council (ECCC) PTA created

the Margie Hatfield Scholarship Fund in 1990 to honor the dedication and years of service given by Mrs. Hatfield to the youth of our Council. She is a Past President of the orga-nization who served three consecutive terms. It is with this service in mind that the Council PTA sponsors the scholarship program. The purpose of the fund is to help deserving youth in their quest for higher knowledge. An emphasis is placed on the service records and citizenship of the winning appli-cants, as this embodies the philosophy of PTA. The Margie Hatfield Scholarship Fund will once again award six separate $1,000 scholarships; one student from each of the ECCC PTA high schools will be chosen. The following criteria, listed in order of significance, are used to evaluate applicants: involvement in service-oriented projects, community and extra-curricular activities, leadership, honors and awards, an essay, references, completeness of application, and grade point average. Here are some more details about the Margie Hatfield scholarship:

When you think about high school sports, fencing is not usually first on the list. However, here in Georgia, that may be changing. You don’t need to be especially large or strong in order to fence. Fencing is a combination of strategy, move-ment and control. Anyone can learn to fence, and learning will promote fitness, sportsmanship, physical control and bal-ance as well as self-confidence.

High school fencing is gaining an increasing following in the United States, evidenced by the establishment of state leagues, an increase in Junior level national competitors, and, in 2011, the establishment of the first annual National High School Championship in Cleveland, Ohio.

High School fencing in Georgia is a fast-growing activity, currently supported through the high schools as an athletic club. There has been a significant increase in fencing clubs and tournaments at the high school level in the last several years. The Georgia High School Fencing League (GHSFL) was founded in 2004 and currently numbers eleven schools and over 300 fencers. School clubs hold their own practices and come together once a month during the season to fence other member schools in épée (the most popular of the three fencing weapons). Additionally, the On Guard High School Fencing League of Georgia was created to allow students to fence all three weapons (épée, foil and sabre). This league, formed in 2010, currently numbers seven schools and over 80 fencers.

Here in East Cobb, two high schools have fencing clubs that currently compete successfully in GHSFL tournaments, Pope High School (43 members) coached by David Eichler and Lassiter High School (25 members) coached by Andrew Quattrociocchi. They compete against each other and the following GHSFL high school clubs: Alpharetta, Centennial, Chattahoochee, Dunwoody, Johns Creek, Milton, North Springs, Northview, and Roswell.

This season’s GHSFL tournaments started in September 2011 and will end February 2012 with the championship

tournaments. The Individual Championship for the 2011-12 season will be on February 4th at Northview High School. For each sex, the 84 highest ranked fencers who have also competed in at least three tournaments this season will qual-ify for the championship. The Team Championship for the 2011-12 season will be on February 11th at Chattahoochee High School. For each sex, the four schools with the most points will qualify for the championship. The final team rank-ing for the season will be the place earned in the Team Championship.

As of January 8, 2012, Pope High School as a combined team was ranked 2nd in the league with the women ranked 3rd and the men ranked 3rd. Lassiter High School as a com-bined team was ranked 9th with the women ranked 6th and the men ranked 10th.

In addition to the GHSFL tournaments five Pope fenc-ers took part in the Georgia Division Qualifier for the Junior Olympics. Pope High school students, Christi Nakajima and Katie Van Riper, both qualified to participate in the 2012 Junior Olympics Fencing Championships being held in Salt Lake City, Utah, February 18-20, President’s Day weekend.

If you have never been a spectator at a fencing tourna-ment you are missing out on a truly exciting sport. Modern fenc-ing brings together yesterday’s traditions of discipline, respect, and honor with the fast-paced athletics of sports today.

2012. ELM is a non-profit, non-denominational learning orga-

nization for those 50 or older and meets in the First United

For Founder and CEO Amy Corrigan, Corrigan Care is more than just a non-profit organization she founded: it is a way to honor her daughter Emmy’s life and continue the impact she had on other exceptional children and their families. Emmy Corrigan was diagnosed with Down syn-drome. After overcoming many health challenges as an infant, she developed Parvovirus (Fifth Disease) when she turned two. She was in and out of the hospital, but ultimate-ly lost her battle in December, 2009. Amy has turned this tragic loss into a wonderful legacy — Corrigan Care, Inc.

Continuing the organization’s mission “to make the world a better place by embracing parents and families of exceptional children,” Corrigan Care recently launched a Mom’s Morning Out (MMO) program for Special Needs Children and their siblings ages 6 months-3 years. The MMO is held at Mt Bethel UMC’s Nursery, Room D-8, every Wednesday from 9:30am-12:30pm. It gives parents that much needed “me-time” while their children are in a fun-filled, learning environment that encompasses therapeutic play while stimulating their desire to learn. Parents can part-ner with caregivers to maintain each child’s daily routine while upholding their developmental goals. “Because of our fundraising efforts,” explains Amy Corrigan, “if a child requires a nursing level of care, one is made available at no additional cost.”

Corrigan Care’s MMO is an affordable, guilt-free option that delivers an invaluable service. With a minimum of three caregivers at all times, children are given individualized attention by the staff — all of whom have special needs kids or grand-kids of their own, as well as prior childcare experience. The weekly program accepts at least six spe-

cial needs kids and welcomes their siblings. Each week, Lakeshore Learning Store is providing a craft project for the kids to explore their inner-artistry while providing a sensory experience.

Amy Corrigan, an East Cobb resident, brings hands-on knowledge to this new MMO. She has served as the Education Director of the Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta for the past two years and played a part in bringing GiGi’s Playhouse – a Down Syndrome Awareness Center, to Atlanta. Current efforts extend from collaboration with other parents to promote understanding of children with disabili-ties to local Daisy Troops, with hopes to bring this presenta-tion to East Cobb’s elementary schools.

Your Child’s Daycare CenterWhen you send your child to daycare, you want to

make sure that the daycare is in compliance with build-ing and fire safety codes and standards. Georgia state inspectors visit child care facilities throughout Georgia and write inspection reports each year on whether or not a daycare is safe for children. If you are looking for day-care inspection reports, you can go to the Bright from the Start website at www.decal.ga.gov and click search for child care. Each facility has every inspection report avail-able for viewing, from compliance reports to investigative reports. Reports are typically on the website ten days after the date of the visit, and remain posted for 18 months. Contact Bright from the Start at 404-657-5562 for more information. Do you remember the warm feeling you got as a child when an adult read to you? Share that feeling with your child while helping Whole Foods Market at Merchant’s Walk bring the same enjoyment to children who have never had a book given to or purchased for them.

During the week of March 5-11, Whole Foods and the non-profit organization Children’s Literacy of Georgia (CLG, www.childrensliteracyga) are raising funds to buy books for local children in need. CLG Director Dr. Joan Davey says, “Every dollar donated will purchase a book for a child who does not have access to books in the home.”

We usually think of Florida’s panhandle as a great place for our annual family vacation, but my husband and I were able to take a weekend getaway to South Walton, a collection of 15 eclectic beach communities on the Florida coast. We were looking for some peace and quiet and the small towns and villages (Rosemary Beach, Seacrest Beach, Seaside, Santa Rosa Beach to name a few) along 30-A provided just the right romantic setting. Because the 30-A communities have been built around such distinctive architectural themes, we were able to explore and enjoy a wide variety of the 15 beach neighbor-hoods without driving very far.

We chose to stay at Sanctuary by the Sea, a condo devel-opment right on 30-A in Santa Rosa Beach. This gated com-munity was built adjacent to a rare coastal dune lake and a natural preserve. This lush, private setting is complemented by different amenities suited for families and couples alike: three sparkling pools, a fitness center, lakeside canoeing, a movie theater and virtual golf. Our condo overlooked Big Redfish Lake to the west, where we saw people fishing, canoeing, YOLO boarding and kayaking in a serene, natural setting. We enjoyed meandering about the walking trail to the lake, and spent some time relaxing on Sanctuary’s 650 feet of beachfront. With umbrella and chair service available, Sanctuary ensures a care-free, quiet day at the beach.

Dinner was the toughest task of the day because there are so many unbelievable restaurants in this nineteen-mile stretch that our decision of which one to dine in was a lot to handle after a day of nothing but beach.

We had heard about Caliza Restaurant, 30A’s newest din-ing hot spot—offering fresh local seafood, grilled steaks, pasta, soups, and a variety of salads. This restaurant is definitely a hid-den gem. The restaurant is located poolside in Alys Beach’s striking pool complex. Caliza Pool was created in the time-less tradition of the Greek agora or the Roman piazza, and is actually a complex comprising a 50- by 100-foot main pool, a separate family pool, a 75-foot lap pool, and a spa whirlpool. Throughout, exquisite architecture is punctuated with arched colonnades, private cabanas, fountains, lush landscaping and views of the Gulf of Mexico from an elevated terrace. We were eating a delicious meal on a Hollywood movie set. Incredible and romantic!

The next evening we enjoyed another romantic meal at Paradis, a restaurant nestled cozily in the town square area of Rosemary Beach—another planned development on 30-A.Paradis restaurant is fronted by a lounge area marked with

leather, wood and a gorgeous marble bar top as long as the beach it is bare steps away from. The dining room is warm and dimly lit and obviously themed around the restaurant’s love for wine. Our meal — grouper grilled and served over a sautéed lobster orzo and fennel, roasted Patty Pan squash and finished with a classic beurreblanc and Sushi grade tuna seared rare with coconut lime rice, sautéed baby bokchoy and wasabi mustard sauce were magnificent. This level of artistry always has a price tag attached to it. Entrées range from $28 to $38 but the locals know a little secret: If you arrive and order dinner between 5 and 5:45 pm entrées (with the exception of the Filet) are half price.

We were also able to squeeze in a visit to the First Note Music Hall. Founder and host Tommy Jackson creates an entirely unique live music experience by creating one show with a variety of genres and artists coming together in an intimate listening room setting. After 4-5 songs, a new artist (country, jazz, pop, blues, R&B) performs, giving the audience a big variety in one evening. As many as 8 artists in one night. This unique venue is something to check out!

Slipping our bare feet on crystal white sand, staring at the turquoise waters of the gulf, hanging out at a hipster music bar and eating scrumptious food in idyllic settings, South Walton pro-vided a perfect place for our romantic rendezvous.

Part romantic Italian trattoria, part New York-style neighborhood bistro, East Cobb’s Caffe Fortunato is wholly about sharing good food made with simple ingredi-ents with family and friends.

Restaurant owner Michael Fortunato learned southern Italian cooking at the knees of his Italian grandparents, and he learned to hustle in the streets of Philadelphia, where he was earning baseball card money at the tender age of 9 by buying and reselling farm-fresh produce from a shopping cart.

Caffe Fortunato, located in Paper Mill Village, grew out of Fortunato’s vision for a unique, family-friendly neigh-borhood cafe that served the Italian food of his child-hood. His pasta is handmade. His pizzas are wood-fired. Everything is fresh and flavorful.

“Our style is more European, and our food is lighter than the typical Italian fare,” Fortunato said. “I don’t serve anything in here that I wouldn’t serve to my own family.”

One of his specialties is Cioppino, a seafood stew with fresh prawns, calamari, mussels, clams, daily catch, tomatoes, garlic and Mediterranean herbs. He also makes a killer Margherita pizza with San Marzano tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil and extra virgin olive oil. Creative Loafing voted Caffe Fortunato’s pizza with truffles one of its “Top 10 Things” in 2010.

Fortunato says great Italian cooking centers around a handful of ingredients, spectacular in their humbleness: Olive oil, garlic, basil, parsley, salt and pepper.

“I’ve never read a recipe,” he said. “My cooking methods and palate are refined by years of watching my family cook and eating their food,” he said.

Caffe Fortunato, located at 255 Village Parkway, Suite 330, in Marietta, is open every night for dinner and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for lunch. The fun, urban interior, designed by Fortunato to reflect a New York loft vibe, opens onto an airy deck overlooking the water. He’s recently added a game room for the kids.

Visit the restaurant on weeknights before 6:30 p.m. for half-price pizza and no corkage fees apply Sunday through Thursday, if you want to bring your own wine. Georgia will hold its presidential preference primary for the Republican candidates on “Super Tuesday”, March 6. Super Tuesday is a Tuesday in early March when a number of US states all vote in their primaries together. Here are the states that will be holding primary elections: Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. The sheer number of del-egates at stake on Super Tuesday makes it the biggest round of the Republican primary race.

Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp says the continu-ing uncertainty in the Republican primary race could mean that Georgia gets to play a bigger role in selecting the party nominee than originally expected. As the state with the most delegates (76) at stake in the March 6 Super Tuesday contests, Kemp says it’s likely Georgia will be the focus of the candidates and election watchers on that day.

A 2001 graduate of Walton High School, Joel was asked by his mother’s former classmate, Myra Williams Ottewell, to compose original music for her documentary, Mississippi

ReMixed. The one-hour documentary film explores the history of segregation in Mississippi and tells the story of Ottewell’s return to her birthplace in Jackson, determined to celebrate the great racial transformations in the state since the 1960s, only to discover even deeper complications than she antici-pated.

The son of Cynthia and Bill Davis of East Cobb, Joel is a music composer and a 2005 graduate of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was named the school’s first Lilly Endowment Graduate Fellow. Joel completed doc-toral studies at Claremont Graduate University in California and is a faculty member at The Master’s College in Santa Clarita, California.

Pulmonary Fibrosis: When the Personal Becomes PoliticalBy Lesley Steinberg

In February of 2007, my mom, Charlotte Griggs had a cough she couldn’t shake, and her doctor sent her for a CT scan. The diagnosis – Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Her prognosis was cruel and unfair – three to five very difficult years.

Pulmonary Fibrosis is a dead-ly disease, robbing its victims of their ability to breathe. My mother, a fifth-generation native of Georgia and longtime active

resident of East Cobb, was 60 years old at the time, and wanted nothing more than to see her grandchildren grow up, and enjoy retirement with my dad.

My family and I had never heard of Pulmonary Fibrosis, and were terrified to learn more after further research. There is no FDA treatment, no cure, and a three to five year life expectancy. I discovered there were 128,000 living with the disease and 48,000 dying annually. The only hope is a lung transplant (an option for only one percent of patients and with a poor success rate).

I contacted my local members of Congress asking them to support the Pulmonary Fibrosis Research Enhancement Act (PFREA), a bi-partisan bill seeking to establish a national patient registry to help begin to obtain a snapshot of what the dis-ease is, who is affected and what their exposures may be. The Pulmonary Fibrosis Research Enhancement Act, the first-ever introduced in Congress, will enhance research, prevention, and awareness activities relating to pulmonary fibrosis (PF) at the CDC and NIH by creating a National PF Registry, encourag-ing the expansion of research efforts at the NIH, developing a National PF Action Plan, and coordinating a National Summit

on PF. Finding a common link between patients is crucial. What causes this type of lung scarring? Lung diseases receive virtu-ally no funding from the government when compared to other diseases. It is my personal belief this is due to stereotype that folks with lung disease(s) have been smokers and are somehow responsible for their condition. My mom never smoked a day in her life and was not subjected to second-hand smoke. A regis-try and awareness are a stepping stone to finding an effective treatment and eventually a cure.

In May of 2011, my mom began a very difficult summer which consisted of constant calls to 911, emergency room vis-its, and perpetual hospital stays. She coughed constantly and couldn’t climb steps, yet wasn’t considered sick enough to be evaluated for a transplant. Knowing that her time was short, in September, I visited Washington, DC, to join with an advocacy group, the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis (www.coalitionforpf.org) while my mom was in ICU fighting for her life. Over two days, we visited over 70 congressional offices asking for help. By the time I returned, my mom’s condition had declined again. While she hadn’t been considered sick enough for a transplant just six months earlier, she was now “too sick” to be a candidate.

My mom lost her battle on September 28, 2011. My sadness is tempered by my resolve to bring awareness to this insidious disease. There are currently 58 co-sponsors in the House and 11 in the Senate (none from Georgia). A Tax Break for Homeowners

Homestead Exemption Applications are due by April 1, 2012. Homestead Exemption is a tax savings on homestead property available to the following types of eligible home-owners.

• BASIC HOMESTEAD – tax savings of up to $257, depending on your tax district and other exemptions.

• SCHOOL TAX – exempt from all County school taxes; must be 62 or older on Jan. 1; proof of age required.

• DISABILITY ($12,000 income limitation) - must be totally and permanently disabled on Jan. 1; doctor’s certification required.

• STATE VETERAN’S DISABILITY - for disabled veterans as defined in OCGA 48-5-48; extends to un-remarried spouse or minor occupying homestead.

• VETERAN’S SURVIVING SPOUSE - for un-remarried sur-viving spouse of a member of U.S. Armed Forces who was killed or died as a result of war or armed conflict.

• OVER 65 ($10,000 income limitation) - $4,000 exemp-tion in State tax category; must be 65 or older on Jan. 1; proof of age required.

• OVER 65 (No income requirement) - exempt from all State ad valorem taxes up to 10 contiguous acres immedi-ately surrounding the residence; must be 65 or older on Jan. 1; proof of age required.

• SURVIVING SPOUSE OF A PEACE OFFICER OR FIREFIGHTER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY - Exemption from full value of homestead for un-remarried surviving spouse of a peace officer or firefighter killed in the line of duty; support-ing documentation required.

In Cobb County the Tax Commissioner’s office processes exemption applications. Homeowners have until April 1, 2012, to apply for Homestead Exemption(s) for this tax year. Applications not received by the deadline will be processed and applied in the following year. The applicant must own and occupy the property on January 1 and their name must appear on the deed in order to qualify. Homeowners must apply separately for each exemption for which they are eligible; exemptions are automatically renewed thereafter unless there is a change in ownership or eligibil-ity. Homeowners must notify the Tax Commissioner’s office if they are no longer eligible for an exemption. It is not necessary to reapply if the home has been refinanced. A Homeowner’s Property Tax Exemption brochure will be mailed to new property owners after the first of the year.

Tax bills are mailed on August 15 and payment is due within 60 days to avoid late charges. Homestead Exemption applications and payments must be received or U.S. Postmarked (metered postmark not accepted as proof of timely mailing) by the filing or payment deadline to be con-sidered timely.
