Bad Azalea roads a concern

NOMPENDULO NGUBANE>>[email protected]

WHILE Azalea residents have accusedtheir councillor for road bad condi-tions in “Four area”, the councillor

believes there is a political agenda sincehis in-terventions have been ignored.

Describing theircouncillorMsiziNgcoboaslazy and negligent of their need, members ofthe community said this has led to taxis refus-ing to take themto theirdestinationsdue to thebad road conditions.

Some of the taxi driverswho spoke to Echoconcurred with the views of the community.

When Echo visited the area recently themain road in “Four area” saw many potholesall over the road, and that it is the same withthe passage roads inside the location.

Ngcobo agreed that the conditions are un-bearable, saying this has been a concern foryears.

He said he has tried to help by enlisting themunicipality concerning the issue but nothinghas been done.

“I wrote a letter to the deputy mayor and

hereferredmetothedistrictmunicipalmanag-er (DMM).Themistake Imadewas that I didn’tdo a follow up after I had written to the DMM.

“Themayor himself came to Azalea and hesaw the conditions of the roads in that area. Ithought due to that the municipality wouldmake that area a priority. That is the reason Isay there is a political agenda regarding thewhole. “Other councillors go to the officialsthemselves and demand that service deliverybebroughttotheirwards. It’sworkingforthembut since I do things according Integrated De-velopment Plan (IDP), I’m left behind. Since Itook over from the previous councillor therehave been talks that there’s nothing good thatI would do. It’s a combination of many factorsbut honestly I am concerned about thoseroads,” he said.

A communitymember said they have beencomplaining for years.

“This has caused inconvenience duringpeak hours. Taxis refuse to get inside the loca-tion as they complain that their cars are dam-aged. It’s affecting us and we are appealing tothe municipality to intervene,” he said.

The teachings of Biko need to beinculcated

OFthethreemainformernationallib-eration movements that waged thestruggle against apartheid, the ANC,PAC and the Black ConsciousnessMovement/Azapo, the regime ap-pearstohavereservedit’smostbrutaland cruel intentions for the BCM.

This is despite the fact that theBCM was the youngest of the threeand largely operated above board.

Oneof themost outstandingof theBCM leaders, Onkgopotse Tiro, wasassassinated by the apartheid shitsquad when a parcel bomb was sentto him Botswana where he had beenexiled.

FollowinghisstingingattackoftheBantustanpolicyduringagraduationceremony, he was expelled from thethen Turfloop University.

Tiro then took up a teaching postin Soweto where one of his studentswas the brave youth leader of theSoweto Uprising, Tsietsie Mashinini.Thosewhorememberhimasateach-er say he made teaching a joy to thestudents and his classeswere alwayspacked. However, after persistentstate persecution, the BCM togetherwith his family decided it was bestthat Tiro left the country. But the evilregimefollowedhimtheretofinishitsevil deed.

Another BCM stalwart who waskilled in police cells is Mapetla Mo-hapi, who had graduated with a de-gree in Social Work at Turfloop Uni-versity, thesameinstitutionwhereTi-ro had been studying. The state saidMohapi committed suicide but thatwas obviously a lie and it was provedthat the so-called suicide note was aforgery. He had been assassinatedjust likeTiro. Thetragicandcruelkill-ing of Steve Bantu Biko has been re-portedextensively,howtheapartheid

policeassaultedhiminhiscelluntilhewas brain-damaged. They then puthim in the back of a van, naked, anddrovehimfromEastLondontoPreto-ria, a trip that takes hours on end.

Tragically, no-one has ever beenheld accountable for these killings ofleaders of the BCM, evenwith the es-tablishment of the Truth and Recon-ciliation Commission (TRC). It is saidthat when Biko was asked to showthat the philosophy of black con-sciousness had found root amongstthe black majority, he only said oneword,

“SOWETO.” Now, one often hearssome people complaining that theANC isdownplaying the role thatoth-erliberationmovementsplayedinthestruggle for liberation. While that ac-cusation might be true, and also un-fortunate asmanyof thepresent gov-ernment leaders got their groundinginpolitics through theBCM, the reali-ty is that that responsibility to pro-mote black consciousness philoso-phy amongst the masses rests withBCM activists themselves.

There seems tobe this tendencyattimes from some quarters to expectthe ANC to be everything to every-body. That is not realistic. I mean, how can anyone expect the ANC topromote the PAC, its policies and itsprogrammes when it is a splintergroup?ThePACbrokeaway from theANC in the late 1950s over the ideo-logical position and it is naïve to ex-pectittolooktowardsthePACasnoth-ing but a rival political organisation.

The BCM burst onto the politicalstagewhenboth theANCandthePAChad been banned and immediatelygalvanisedblackpeopletowardsaco-herent political programme.Through the revolutionary philoso-

phy of black consciousness as articu-lated by Biko and his comrades, themasses got rid of their fear followingtheruthlessnessofthe1960banningsof the ANC and PAC. All of a sudden, blackpeoplewerefilledwithrenewedpride in themselves and were con-sumedbyanewvigour tocarryonthestruggle where the older movementshad left off.

Black consciousness saw all kindsof people and communities comingtogetheraroundthecauseoftheirsuf-fering,theblacknessoftheirskin,andforming organizations to fight theracist regime. All over the country, lawyers formedBlack LawyersAsso-ciation, journalists formed BlackJournalists forums, artists formedblack artists forums, parents formedBlack parents associations etc.

There was no denying the realitythat the masses were in the grip of avery potent force, and that force wasblack consciousness. South Africa istodayapolitically freecountry largelyas a result of the work that was doneby the Tiros, Bikos, Mohapis, StriniMoodleys, Mthuli ka Shezis, NcaupeMokoapes and many other gallantfighters of our liberation struggle. Itwould appear that the task facingBCM leaders andactivists in this newSouthAfrica is to inculcate the teach-ings of Biko andhis philosophy to thecurrent generations.

That work has to start at ourhomesandcontinueatschools, notassomekindofbrainwashingtheyoungminds, buttoimbuethemwithapridein themselves, as to who they reallyand what sacrifices were made byothers to get us where a we are now.Thathastohappenifwearecompletethe revolution that Biko and his com-rades started.

TALKINGFOOTBALL

SOUTH African footballers will be touristsin 2014 World Cup in Brazil. It is sad thatour young people will not have an opportu

nity to compete with their peers. In recentyears we have only participated in theevents where our country is a host. The majority of South Africans tend to confusepoverty with ignorance. Our African brothers might not have lots of money but theyare more intelligent than us.They know how to plan and work towardsachieving their goals. A poorer country likeEthiopia beat a highly rated South Africanteam. There is a school of thought that ourcountry does not have good players. People fail to understand that excellent footballers are a product of good coaches. AreSouth African coaches really good? Daily,we are told about the quality of certaincoaches in this country. Statistics or numbers do not lie. Where are the players that

they have produced in all their coachingyears? We do not have players playing inthe top leagues in Europe and yet somepeople tell us that there is quality in coaching locally. The reality is that not only administrationbut also coaches have failed football in thiscountry. How many coaches have we exported to other leagues in the last tenyears? If we are so good why are other African countries not recruiting us? There isstill a lot of work to be done in improvingthe quality of South African footballcoaches. Winning a PSL league cup doesnot necessarily make you an internationalcoach. It is also true that sometimes in thiscountry other means can help you wincompetitions other than technical compe

tency. It is going to be a long process beforeour football can start competing with thebest. The training of coaches, the accumulation of youth coaching experience andsetting up of structures will take a longtime. We need to be patient with this process. The problem is that sometimes peoplein positions are scared of telling the truth. We tend to make lots of promises that cannot be fulfilled. This creates lots of expectations from the public. If we look at a cycleof ten years like the rest of the nations do,then 2018 will be too close a target. Therealistic target to qualify and maybe advance to the second round will be 2026.This will also depend on how quick wemove in terms of setting up structures andthe dedication of all involved. Develop

ment of excellent sportspersons is not justthe work of sports federations. Everyonein the country will have to play a positiverole. This includes parents, communities, business and government. There is nosports federation, for instance, that canprovide equipment, facilities, coachingfees and feed the athletes. The challengeis bigger than most of us think. However, with honesty, cooperation and dedication,South African football can move into thetop 20 in the 2030s. Unzima lo mthwalo!
