FORD has unveiled its smartnew B-MAX as aproduction-ready concept atthe 2011 Geneva MotorShow.
The car, which shares itsplatform with the Fiesta, isexpected to prove a serious rival forestablished players like theVauxhall Meriva.
A new body design whicheliminates the traditional B pillarand features twin rear sliding doorshas already been engineered forproduction and promises easyaccess to the cabin and top notchflexibility.
The B-MAX is slightly longerthan the Fiesta five-door and 32cmshorter than the new C-MAX, so itis well placed to meet a growingdemand for downsized cars bettersuited to congested urbanconditions.
“With the B-MAX we set out tocreate a vehicle that captures thespirit of a smaller S-MAX,” saidFord design director MartinSmith.
“We wanted to show that a smallcar could be very spacious andpractical inside, while still havingthe sleek, dynamic appearance thathas made the S-MAX so popular.”
With 60/40 split rear seats and thefront passenger seat folded to createa flat load floor, the side access is
convenient to load bulky items andwith the front passenger seat folded,the interior is capable ofswallowing long loads.
And sitting 11cm taller thanFiesta, the B-MAX also providesgenerous accommodation – driversbenefit from a higher ‘command’seating position, while rear seatlegroom and headroom is alsoimproved.
On the outside, the car’s front-endfeatures a new interpretation ofFord’s signature trapezoidal grille,and there are strong headlampgraphics, a window line with itskick-up behind the rear doors andprominent wheel lips.
Better still, the three-dimensionalsurfacing of the body sides helps toavoid that blocky look so commonin this class of vehicle.
And with a distinctive windowgraphic, wraparound tailgate glassand slim tail lamps split by thetailgate, the rear of the B-MAX isclosely reminiscent of the largerS-MAX.
The B-MAX is powered by a1.0-litre Ford EcoBoost petrolengine equipped with the FordAuto-Start-Stop system.
This three-cylinder unit is the
next addition to the line-up of FordEcoBoost engines and like the 1.6and 2.0-litre four-cylinderpowerplants recently launched inFord’s medium and large cars, the1.0-litre unit combines direct fuelinjection, turbocharging and twinindependent variable cam timing toachieve notable reductions infuel-consumption and CO2emissions.

SQUEAKY CLEAN: Nissan’s Micra cuts emissions to 95g/km
CAR makers are about tostart a power play with adifference and helpmotorists cope with thesoaring cost of fuel.
With the crisis in the Middle Eastthreatening to send pricesrocketing, a new breed of engines ison the way packing plenty ofperformance while getting the mostout of every gallon.
Technological advances revealedat the Geneva Motor Show will seethe next generation of little carsoffering as much get up and go as2.0-litre models of only a couple ofyears ago.
Korean manufacturer Kia kickedoff the trend by revealing its newRio hatchback which will use athree-cylinder, 1.1-litre diesel engineto achieve almost 90mpg ineveryday use.
Lightweight construction alliedto high pressure fuel injectionsystems and turbo chargers meanthat conventional engines will soonbe able to deliver high economywithout taking the fun out ofdriving.
Mazda announced it was bringingin the first of its SKYACTIV enginesbefore the year is out on a newrange based on its Minagi concept.
The engines are said to be up to20 per cent more fuel efficient andgenerate much lower CO2emissions..
Nissan is following a similarroute with a supercharged one-litre
Micra that slashes emissions to95g/km.
MINI was in on the act, revealingits new two-litre SD diesel modelswhich will deliver Cooper-likeperformance while averaging morethan 65 to the gallon with emissionsdown to 114g/km.
The British marque also showedits new city car Rocketman concept– the smallest MINI so far but witha lot of big car features, anothertrend which was being rolled out atGeneva.
Ford unveiled the B-MAXproduction-ready concept – amini-MPV based on the Fiesta,complete with sliding doors makingaccess to the rear seats easy.
The car is likely to be inproduction soon replacing theageing Fusion.
Spanish car company SEAT hadanother concept car – a crossovercoded IBX which would be availablewith a hybrid power train as well asnormal engines.
The drive for economy and lowemissions no matter what size ofcar was also evident with LandRover showing off its Range-Etechnology.
Fitted to a Range Rover Sport thecar is a full-blown off-roader thatcan manage 85mpg. Land Roversays it plans to roll out thetechnology within two years.
Toyota was sticking to its hybridguns with a seven seat version ofthe Prius and a petrol/electricversion of the Yaris as well asshowing a battery-powered electriccar based on the iQ city model.
With Honda, Toyota hastrailblazed hybrid systems butHonda has its sights set onhydrogen as the fuel of the future.
Ken Keir, executive vice presidentof Honda in Europe, said that theelectrification of cars began withhybrids, would continue withplug-in hybrids and pure electriccars which offer greater zeroemission range and would end withthe arrival of fuel cell vehicles suchas the company’s hydrogen-fuelledFC-X Clarity model.
Nevertheless, the road to zeroemissions is likely to be a long one.While the cars may exist inexperimental form there is stillmuch work to be done – not leastthe creation of electricity andhydrogen recharging points.
In the meantime, car companiesare showing there are other ways ofmaking efficiencies and perhapsPeugeot could have the bestshort-term solution.
Its diesel hybrid 3008 – the firsthybrid system mated to a diesel – isonly months away from productionand that’s a car which could make100mpg motoring a reality.
