Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer 1.4 T Sri

IF ever there was an example ofhonest workhorse blossominginto cutting edge thoroughbredit’s the Vauxhall Astra SportsTourer.

The old Astra Estate it replacedjust before the turn of the year wasa solid, trustworthy foreman thatgot down to the nitty gritty ofshifting families and their basics.

There were no frills though. Itwas practical but plain inside, witha worthy but straight-edged cabin.

Anyone swopping from one ofthese models into the newEllesmere Port-built Sports Tourerwould be gobsmacked by the shiftupmarket, both in design andfittings inside and the craftedelegance on the outer.

We may be talking funky cabin,falling roofline, wraparound rearwindscreen and bladed sides withthis car, but let’s not forget theprimary function of buying anestate model in the first place – theneed for a big, easy to access, boot.

Thankfully the Sport Tourer’slean lines – penned by British

designer Mark Adams – haven’tcompromised space, the loadcapacity equalling that of the oldestate with the seats in place andexceeding it with them lowered.

There are some smart featurestoo, like the new FlexFold operationwhich allows each section of the60/40 split rear seats to drop flat atthe touch of a button in the luggagebay wall.

Then there’s the two-touch bootcover – a tap of the fingers to slide itupwards, another to retract itcompletely into a cassette.

The walls of the boot are also flat,the tailgate and load bay the samewidth to make loading

straightforward and a simple butsensible option comes in the shapeof a rubberised luggagecompartment liner to protect thecarpeting, rear seatbacks andbumper.

The load can also be partitionedoff or secured by nets whenVauxhall’s FlexOrganiser system isfitted.

So a lot of preparation has goneinto making the Sports Tourer asuser friendly and practical aspossible.

There’s also a useful choice whenit comes to trim grades, labelled ES,Exclusiv, Sri and SE – all with ESP,six airbags, air-con, front electricwindows and daytime runninglights as standard.

And buyers also have a choice ofseven engines, the range an average13.3 per cent cleaner and moreeconomical than its predecessor.

The powerplant line-up kicks offwith the 1.4-litre 100PS petrol ESmodel at £16,950 and there are also1.4 Turbo 140PS and 1.6 115PS petrolunits. Diesels comprise a 1.3 CDTi

ecoFLEX powerplant with 95PS andStart/Stop technology, a pair of1.7-litre engines with 110 or 125PSand a 160PS 2.0-litre CDTi whichtops the line-up at £24,835 in SEautomatic spec.

The tested 1.4 Turbo 140PS petrolmodel rides well and is verysmooth, even on poor surfaces, butthen the suspension was tuned atVauxhall’s engineering centre at

Millbrook and has been set upspecifically to cope with UK drivingconditions.

It all makes for an extremelydesirable estate car – one idealeither for active families orbusinesses who need extra space ontap but don’t require a van. Andtrailer stability controls can befitted as an option to help those whoneed to tow.

HighpowerMINI’sin leagueof itsownA PUNCHY diesel

engine is beingadded to the MINIrange makingBritain’s favourite

little car even more appealingto drivers who want fun withas much economy as possible.

Using a 140bhp two-litreengine from its parentcompany BMW, the new SDmodels will become a featurein all four MINI body styles.

It’s the largest capacityengine ever fitted to aproduction MINI and gives allbut the four-door Countryman0 to 60 acceleration times ofless than nine seconds.

More importantly it canaverage more than 60 to thegallon and while not as frugalas the 1.6-litre diesel engineintroduced in the MINIseveral years ago, it’s got theextra legs to make it muchmore a driver’s car.

Based on the Cooper S, theSD comes with thecharacteristic bulging airintake on the bonnet and twinexhausts mounted centrally atthe rear. The hatchbackversion also features a spoilerrunning off the back of theroof.

With prices running from£18,750 for the hatch to £23,190for the four-wheel-driveCountryman the sports dieselcosts around £700 more thanthe equivalent petrol-enginedMINIs.

Convertibles are pricedfrom £21,130, the Countrymanestate £19,790 and thetwo-wheel-drive Countrymanis £21,970.

All versions come withfuel-saving devices such asstop/start, gear change

indicators and brakeenergy regeneration whichhelp keep emissionsacceptably low.

With the exception of theCountryman all come inbelow 120g/km while thebigger model manages122g/km or 130 for the allwheel drive version.

The new engine – it’s thesame one as is used in theBMW 118d – is at its liveliestin the MINI hatch.

With masses of torqueavailable from as low as 1,750revs it’s a mean performer.

Such is the mid-rangeoutput from the engine itdelivers more grunt than thatof the highly tuned JohnCooper Works MINIs.

In the hatch 0 to 60 comesup in a shade over eightseconds while the car has aclaimed top speed of 134mph.It’s also the most economical

and cleanest with emissions of114g/km and average mpg of65.7.

The real beauty of theengine is that it loves toperform. We found that gentledriving delivered only around40 to the gallon economy –adopt a sporty style and thempg shot up to almost 60, andthat was on a tight enginewith less than 350 miles on theclock.

Torque steer, which is anissue with high poweredfront-wheel-drive cars, is keptin check with some cleverelectronics and the SDhandles in a true sportyfashion which shouldn’t catchyou out.

All versions come with aquick shifting six-speedmanual gearbox.

Automatics, which arefitted with racing car stylepaddle shifters, are an option

which, on the hatch, cost£1,200 more.

As a car which blendssports performance witheconomy, the SD hits themark and gives MINI quite astake in the small car dieselmarket.

For out and out economythe 1.6-litre diesel models –some of which have tax freeCO2 ratings below 100g/km –will do the job admirablywhile the 2.0-litre engine inthe SD has an edge whichdelivers genuine driving funwithout a hefty penalty at thepumps.

Diesel rivals such as theCitroen DS3, the Audi A1 andAlfa’s MiTo may be cheaperbut can’t match the Cooper SDeither for bhp or all roundperformance and when itcomes to pure driverenjoyment the MINI is in aleague of its own.
