2-001 Safety Information

- It is the responsibility of the machine owner or their authorized representative to make certain that the machine operators are correctly trained in the operation of the machine.

- Only authorized electricians or electrical specialists may work on the electrical equipment.- The pneumatic and electric connecting lines are to be installed in an orderly manner and are to be protected from

damage (by cable channels, conduits, or something similar).- The safety devices, which are included in this shipment, must always be utilized and shall not be by-passed or

rendered inoperable.- During service or maintenance work, the machine must be turned off at the main electrical switch (unplug the

machine) and the machine must be disconnected from the pneumatic lines (for example, by quick coupling).- Before a tool change, gearbox change or work in the area of the drill, the main switch must always be set at 0.- Use only tools which meet specifications and regulations and which are strong and durable (such as the tools from

the Grass product line program).-Only hard metals, or HSS (high speed steel) drills with a total length of 57 mm and a shaft diameter of 10 m may

be utilized.- The drill diameter may be a maximum of 35 mm on the drive spindle and a maximum of 15 mm diameter on all

the other bore spindles.- Before operating the machine, all safety devices must be checked to make sure they are complete and function

correctly.- The operator should be especially careful with larger workpieces that project out over the machine. We strongly

recommend using a larger support base or additional support bases for the workpiece.- Shavings should not be blown off, but should be suctioned with the appropriate device.- The machine should always be turned off at the main switch when work is finished and then secured, so that

unauthorized persons cannot start it.- Keep the workplace and the surrounding area clean because messiness and an unorganized workplace increase

the risk of injury.- Protect yourself from electrical shocks.- Utilize the machine only in dry spaces and never leave the machine outside in the rain.- Keep unauthorized persons away from the machine.- Only one person shall operate the machine.- When working, keep your hands away from the working area of the drill and the insertion die arm.- Wear appropriate work clothing when operating the machine.- Use a hair net with long hair and do not wear wide or floppy pieces of clothing which could

become caught in moving machine parts.

2-002 Recommended Usage

- The Grass Ecopress hinge drilling machine is used exclusively for drilling in solid wood and derived wood materials as well as for the purposes described in chapter 7-4 ”Examples of Usage”. Other uses are not specified, and, thus, the manufacturer is not liable for resulting damages. The operator and user alone assume all risks.

- The operator must conform to the operating instructions when determining appropriate usages.- The machine shall only be operated, serviced and maintained by trained and authorized personnel- The original set-up may not be modified without the express consent of Grass GmbH.

2-003 Risks According to EN 292-2

The Ecopress hinge drilling machine is built according to current state of technology and knownsafety and technical directives. Still, risks remain for the life and health of the operator or ofthird parties, as well as damage to the machine and other property.Remaining risks consists of:- Caution: even when the main switch is turned off, the machine can move if the start button is

activated- operation of the machine by unqualified personnel- operation of the machine without the required and recommended safety devices- inappropriate tooling or improper installation or attachment of tooling- the placement of the operator’s second hand during drilling, inserting and installing of machine parts - additional person(s) being in the area of the operating machine- contact with a machine which has not been turned off and secured in the proper manner- not maintaining the machine properly as described in chapter 7-0 ”Operating the Ecopress”- malfunctioning of the control elements.

These remaining risks can be prevented by adhering to the information found in chapter 2-0 and 7-0.

2-004 Safety Devices

Safety devices, information about dangers, etc. serve to ensure safety and may not, in any case be removed or be made inoperable.- The main switch, which can be turned off to prevent unauthorized start-ups, must be turned off

during adjustment and set-up processes.- The pneumatic filter reducing regulator prevents the machine from overloading (see chapter 4-006).- For thermal overload protection of the motor, see chapter 4-007.- Controllable back pressure valve, which is directly on the main cyclinder, prevents the machine from descending in

the event the compressed air is lost. The valve is first opened when the start button is activated (see ”Pneumatic Wiring Diagram” chapter 4-006).

- The motor first runs when the machine is changed from the feed position to the forward operating speed.- The motor does not run during the insertion.- The integrated dust collection system protects personnel from fine dust and simultaneously also protects one frominjury by the drill.

4-004 Description of the Operating Features

Ecopress-Pneumatic llustration 4-004-011 Start button for the stroke motion

As long as the start button is activated, the bore head moves downward until theboring depth stop (position 4, illustration 4-002-02) sets on the workpiece, that is, until thepneumatic cylinder has completed the stroke motion.

2 Selector switch for pneumatic hold down clamps is an accessory.left position is for loose workpieceright position is for tightened workpiece

3 Insertion dies are placed in the insertion arm.4 The main switch is installed in the terminal box of the electric motor.

Caution: This switch turns off only the electric motor, not the control system.

Ecopress-Manual Illustration 4-004-021 Hand lever is for the downward movement of the drill gearbox.2 Insertion dies are placed in the insertion arm.3 The main switch is installed in the terminal box of the electric motor.

Caution: This switch turns off only the electric motor, not the control system.

4-005 Ecopress Machine’s Function

Ecopress-Pneumatic

By pressing the start button (position 1, illustration 4-004-01), the pneumatic valve (2) (illustration 4-006-01) is activated and the pneumatic cylinder executes the upward motion of the boring head. The exhaust air of the cylinderescapes through the pneumatic roller valve (3) (illustration 4-006-01) which is activated by the switch cam (12) (illustration 4-002-03).As soon as the switch cam releases the pneumatic roller valve, this valve closes. Now the exhaust air of this cylinderhas to escape through the one-way restrictor valve (6) (illustration 4-006-01).Consequently, the exhaust air also flows through the one-way restrictor valve (4) (illustration 4-006-01) and activatesthe P-E-transformer (5) (illustration 4-006-01), which turns on the power circuit protection K1 (illustration 4-007-01).Thus, the motor operates. After the escape of all the exhaust air from the cylinder, the air from the P-E transformer (5) (illustration 4-006-01) alsoescapes through the one-way restrictor valve (4) (illustration 4-006-01), and the motor shuts off. When the start button is released, the boring head returns to the uppermost position. The exhaust air of the upper cylinder chamber is used to blow the wood shavings out of the bore hole.

Caution: The more the one-way restrictor valve is closed, the longer the motor will run after reaching the boringdepth; respectively, after the release of the start button.

Caution: The switch cam has to activate the pneumatic valve in the uppermost position. The switch cam has to beinstalled high enough, so that the motor will not also run during the insertion.

Ecopress-Manual

All movements are manually operated on the Ecopress-Manual. When the hand lever is pushed down, the boring head will also move down. The cam switch (1) (illustration 7-305-01)is tightly connected to the boring head, which activates the roller limit switch (2) (illustration 7-305-01). As soon as theroller limit switch is activated, the control system turns on the electric motor.

Caution: The cam switch must not activate the roller limit switch in the uppermost position. The cam switch must beinstalled high enough so that the motor does not run during the insertion.

8-002 Boring Head’s Operating Speed Cannot Be Adjusted only with Ecopress-Pneumatic

If the operating speed cannot be adjusted (according to chapter 7-303), a technician or specialist must be consulted.”Pneumatic Wiring Diagram”, chapter 4-006.

8-003 Motor Does Not Run

- Turn off the main switch. Check if the drill gearbox turns manually on a gearbox spindle. The ventilation wheel must turn thereby. (If this is not the case, then the gearbox can sustain mechanical damages.)

- Turn on the main switch on the motor.- Press the blue button on the cover of the electric switch box; the thermal overload relay has kicked in.- Check to see if the machine is plugged in.- The Ecopress-Manual: Does the switch cam activate the limit switch during the drilling cycle? 8-004 The Boring Head Does Not Descend only with the Ecopress-Pneumatic

- Turn off the main switch.- Check the pneumatic lead cable.- Check the air pressure in the machine with the pneumatic gauge; it should indicate 5.5 - 6 bar.- Check if all the pneumatic lines inside the Ecopress are plugged in and if the pneumatic lines

are damaged.- Release the pneumatic connection (1) by pressing in the rings (2) (illustration 8-004-01) and

pulling out the pneumatic hose. When the start button is activated, compressed airshould be expelled from the disconnected pneumatic line.Caution: Keep hands clear of the danger zone of moving parts. If compressed airis blowing out, then the problem lies with the pneumatic cyclinder. If no compressed air blows out, then the problem probably lies with the start valve or perhaps with the pneumatic cylinder.

-If none of these points are successful, then a pneumatic specialist should be consulted. For wiring diagram, see chapter 4-006.

8-005 Parts Do Not Fit The Drill Patterns When Inserted illustration 8-005-01/02
