FTC Rules Welcomed, But ARMADADisappointed Re Transshipping

WASHINGTON - The tradepractice rules for the phono-graph record industry are fi-nally here; and ARMADA, withsome reservations, welcomesthem. As does RIAA.

"The trade practice rules area precedent for marketing anddistribution in America," AmosHeilicher of Minneapolis, Presi-dent of the American RecordMerchants and Distributors As-sociation, commented last week.

He said ARMADA, an associ-ation of wholesale record dis-tributors and major independentmanufacturers, including therecord subsidiaries of the mo-tion picture industry, hasstriven for some kind of tradepractice rules over the last threeyears. Discriminatory pricing ofproduct, discriminatory promo-tional allowances, and other un-fair sales practices have beenrampant in the trade and hasforced many small firms out ofthe business within the last fewyears, Heilicher stated. "The sit-uation was so intolerableno one in the industry strong

enough or willing enough to curbthe cut-throat, dog-eat-dog typeof trading we appealed to theFederal Trade Commission," hedeclared.

ARMADA persisted with anFTC solution in face of industrylethargy and even reluctance,Heilicher recounted, and he saidnow that the rules are out it istoo early to tell whether theywill produce a cure. He addedthat in any event the FTC'seffort represents a respectablestart toward a respectable in-dustry.

"Even if everyone in the tradefinds the FTC's rules a littleshort in some respects or strongin others they deserve a test pe-riod to see where defects willdevelop" the association chiefexplained. He said that it maybe necessary to petition the FTCfor some revision but this is aproblem that can be met best ata later and more appropriatedate.

Transshipping ProblemEdgar Jones, Executive Sec-

retary of ARMADA, stated that"ARMADA is disappointed that

the rules contain no provisionson transshiping, the bete noireof the industry. If the provisionsrelative to price discriminationprove too difficult for investiga-tion and enforcement and trans-shipping continues to disruptthe market greatly throughprice dumping, then we'll haveto call upon the FTC for re-visions and amendment. Butwe'll meet that problem whenwe come to it.

"The most important thingright now is to learn the rulesas written, adjust ourselves tofacts as they are; and to under-stand the marketing of recordsas it's going to be under therules. From the calls I've re-ceived, ARMADA is delightedthat the rules finally have beenissued. Good, bad or indifferent,they are definite guideposts. Theprovisions must be made under-standable to everyone in thetrade. ARMADA will do every-thing possible to make themoperable."

ARMADA has already an-nounced its all -industry Work-shop meet for Oct. 23 at the

Col Record ClubWins In FTC Suit

WASHINGTON, D.C.-In asweeping decision handed downlast week, the Columbia RecordClub won a major victory in asuit brought against it by theFederal Trade Commission.

The Commission had chargedthat the Columbia Record Clubhad engaged in monopolistic andunfair practices and had illegal-ly suppressed competition in therecord industry, particularly bythe sale through the Club of rec-ords produced by certain inde-pendent record manufacturers.It also asserted that the Clubpursued unfair pricing policiesand made deceptive advertisingclaims. The Club's policies andmethod of operations were com-pletely sustained when HearingExaminer, Donald R. Moore, ina 332 page opinion, dismissedevery charge made by the Com-mission. He found that thelicensing agreements betweenthe Columbia Record Club andindependent record manufactu-rers were lawful; that theClub's pricing and advertisingwere lawful; and that there wasno evidence of monopoly or anyattempt to monopolize.

Despite World Series MOAConvention Sets RecordsCHICAGO-The World Series proved something of a nemesis

to the Music Operators of America Convention Oct. 14, 15 and 16at the Sherman House, but the result, at press time, was stillhighly satisfactory.

According to Fred Granger, MOA's Managing Director, themeet was a vast improvement over previous years. Last year, itwas noted, there were 42 exhibitors and 82 booths; this year,57 exhibitors and 110 booths. The record companies there werenot overjoyed at the damper put on vital milling around by theWorld Series games; but good will was generated in healthy pro-portions by the hospitality suites many of the record companieshad.

CHICAGO - An active KappRecords made two major op -oriented announcements at theMOA Convention here last week:the first Winners Circle Seriesof singles from hit albums; andits second release of StereoLittle LPs-six of them.

Al Cahn, Vice President andNational Sales Manager, andMacey Lipman, Sales Executive,represented Kapp Records at theMOA Convention in the recordcompany's booth and at theforum discussions.

The Winners Circle singlerecords will all be former hits,or standards from hit albums.Some of the selections in thisseries will appear on 45 rpm forthe first time. This product isaimed at the juke box operatoras well as the retail record shop.With these outlets, it is con-ceivable that any one of therecords in the Winners CircleSeries could develop into a hit,label feels.

Kapp has given a fresh lookto the Winners Circle Series,new color, new merchandisingaids, including Order Forms,attractive streamers and indexcards for each selection featur-ing a self-contained inventorycontrol system. A supply of wirecounter racks, with a WinnersCircle header, will be madeavailable to key One -Stop dis-tributors.

The initial Winners Circle re-lease contains 31 singles. Among

HOLLYWOOD - A specialpress conference was held byDecca Records Oct. 13 at theUniversal City Studios in whichMilton R. Rackmil, President ofDecca, announced to trade pressthat Decca had consumated anagreement with The KingstonTrio's Trident Productions fortheir exclusive services as re-cording artists.

The pact, which was enteredinto by Decca and Trident Pro-ductions Inc., which is owned bythe Trio and its manager, FrankWerber, calls for the services ofthe group both as recordingartists and as producers. Inaddition to having all their newrecordings released on the Deccalabel, they will also be releasingnew acts through their produc-tion company on Decca as well.

The agreement calls for anamount of money in excess of$1,000,000 and is considered tobe one of the largest pacts of itskind ever made in the history ofthe recording industry. Theterm of the agreement is forfive years, with provisions forextensions.

Present at the conference, inaddition to Rackmil, were theKingston Trio (Bob Shane,Nick Reynolds, John Stewart),personal manager Frank Wer-ber, Martin P. Salkin, VicePresident of Decca who flew infrom New York for the conference, and representatives of thevarious music and entertainmentpress. Rackmill stated that thisagreement with The KingstonTrio constituted another majorstep by Decca to secure the big-gest names in the recording andentertainment world under theDecca banner.

The first release on Decca bythe Trio is being rushed outthis week, and will be followedby their initial LP for the label.

Capitol Launches GiantPromotion, The Teen SetHOLLYWOOD-Capitol Records Distributing Corp. (CRDC) is

launching "The Teen Set," a multi -faceted, youth -oriented nationalpromotion designed to establish a closer rapport between CRDCand the record industry's most important customer-the teenager.

Announcement of the campaign-most comprehensive teen pro-motion ever attempted by a record company-was made today byBrown Meggs, CRDC Vice President and Merchandising Head.

According to Meggs, the Teen Set operation comprises a widevariety of merchandising, advertising, publicity and marketingaids, including a full-fledged professional fan magazine and anational teen -artist fan club.

Cornerstone of the promotion is Vol. I of The Teen Set, a 36 -page fan magazine containing original pictorial and editorial fea-tures about America's most successful recording group, The BeachBoys. Some 750,000 copies of the magazine will be given awaythrough retail record outlets with the purchase of any Beach Boysalbum (their two new LPs are "Beach Boys' Christmas Album"and "Beach Boys Concert").

In addition, over 500,000 Teen Set campus textbook covers, in-corporating biographies and pictures of Capitol's top teen artists,will be distributed through record stores.

Both the magazine and the bookcovers contain an applicationblank to be used by teenagers in joining Capitol's Hollywood -basedTeen Set fan club. An initial membership fee of one dollar entitlesmembers to receive a Teen Set membrship card, a 45 -rpm singlerecord by a top Capitol teen artist, details on future issues of TheTeen Set magazine and regular issues of a free Teen Set newsletterfeaturing "inside" pre-release information on leading artists, theirrecordings and personal appearances.

Contained in Vol. I of The Teen Set magazine is the first in aplanned series of teen -oriented national contests. Contestants whobest complete (in 50 words or less) the phrase, "I like The BeachBoys because . . ." will receive a Honda 50 motorbike (first prize),a custom Hap Jacobs surfboard (second prize) and 100 Capitolalbums (third prize). Winners will be notified via telephone by oneof The Beach Boys.

The Teen Set magazine is now planned as a quarterly, with thesecond issue scheduled for February, 1965. Future issues will bedevoted to such Capitol teen artists as The Beatles, Peter & Gordon,Cilia Black, Dick Dale, Donna Loren, Hub Kapp and The Wheels,Don Grady, Jody Miller, The Four Preps, The Lettermen, DonnaLynn, The Drew-Vels and others.

Backing up the entire Teen Set promotion are special merchan-dising racks to be set up in record stores where the magazine andBeach Boys' albums are featured. Window streamers will announcethe availability of the publication and albums.

In addition, CRDC's Teen Set promotion will include a nationalradio -advertising campaign, conducted by Foote, Cone & Belding;and the supplying of special Teen Set EPs to radio stations.

He stated thatthe entire record industry -dealers, record manufacturers,publishers and artists - wouldgreatly benefit from the decision.He noted that the HearingExaminer agreed with Colum-bia's position that the creationof the Club, followed by theorganization of the other com-petitive Clubs, has broadenedthe entire market for recordsand has interested more peoplein records and phonographs asa source of entertainment in thehome. Lieberson was particular-ly gratified by the Hearing Ex-aminer's recognition of the roleplayed by the Columbia RecordClub in the growth of the indus-try, especially at the dealer level.

RCA's Public Affairs Dept.Now Reporting To Marketing

The Public Alfairs Depart-ment at RCA Victor Records,which incorporates the Pressand Information activity, willhenceforth report directly to theMarketing area at the company,it was announced this week byharry E. Jenkins, Division VicePresident, Marketing.

Now reporting on a divisionstaff level, the Public AffairsDepartment, headed by HerbDelman, previously was respon-sible to the Advertising and Pro-motion function.

The move, Jenkins indicatedin making the announcement, re-flects the increasingly impor-tant role played by the PublicAffairs Department in the over -I1 function of the Record Divi-

sion. "We consider this depart-ment an imaginative arm ofmarketing," he said, "one thathas proven an invaluable aid toour company in conveying ourpoint -of -view to our consumerpublic."

Helman, who joined RCA Vic-tor Records as Administrator,Album Publicity, in 1955, is aveteran of all phases of the rec-ord business, starting in the

retail sales urea III 191 ). Ileworked in the wholesale area forMusic -Craft Records and as di ;-tributor salesman for Krich. theRCA Victor Distributor in NewJersey, and for Times Co:um-bia through 1953, when hejoined London Records as re-gional sales manager in chargeof sales, promotion and publicityon the East Coast. In 1958,he was appointed Manager ofPress & Information for RCAVictor Records and in 1961 heassumed the title of Manager,Public Affairs with the Press& Information Department re-porting directly to him.

Dot Starts Record ClubHOLLYWOOD - Randolph

C. Wood, President of Dot Rec-ords, announces that the Dotfirm is starting its own recordclub about Nov. 1. He statedthat Dot has been "romancedfor years by people wantingour records, but it seems im-possible to get full representa-tion in the big clubs."

Wood said that the Dot Rec-ord Club will not release anynew LP to the club until it hasbeen exposed to the dealer levelfor a minimum of 90 days. Theclub is planning its operationssuch that merchandise will beon its way to the customerwithin 48 hours after receipt ofthe order. Wood explained thatall customers must have com-plete satisfaction with theproduct or have the option ofhis money back or a substitute.

The club's introductory offerwill be six free LPs with onepurchased at regular retailprice. The member will thenbe required to purchase six al-bums over a 12 month lieriod.Product will be selected fromthe club's monthly mailings.The present Dot organizationwill work on the club, withbilling being handled in the

home office, and orders handledin conjunction with Dot rec-ord pressers RCA, Decca andMonarch. The Hamilton budgetline will not be included in theclub initially.

Would the Dot club considerhandling other companies ifinterest were displayed? "We'llsee what the FTC ideas areabout handling other labels."

Chess Broadens Horizons(' II ICAGO - Chess is a game

demanding wisdom, astutenessand decisiveness. In the highly -competitive record game thesequalities are possessed inabundance by a human dynamowith the singularly appropriatename of Leonard Chess.

The era of big business hasgiven an impersonal aura tomuch of the industry alongwith a feeling of imperma-nence. Not so with Chess, whostill deals through most of thesame distributors with whomhe began business on a directcontact basis in the late '40s.A super -charged administrator,he remains his own besttrouble-shooter and recordsalesman.

Chess Records is the corner-stone of Chess Producing Corp.,which also includes the thriv-ing, jazz -oriented Argo labeland Checker Records. The com-pany head's foresight and tal-ent -perception have paid off innotable "firsts" in the industry.Years before the advent ofrock -&-roll, Chess dominatedthe rhythm -&-blues field witha succession of hits. Today itis bent on broadening its hori-zons with varied wax entrieson the pop market. The labelis anxious that people not pre-judge Chess product any longeras strictly r & b, but evaluateit on an overall pop picture.

The Chess story began in1945. While operating a nightclub on Chicago's South Sidecalled The Mocambo, Chess andtwo partners founded a labelnamed Aristocrat. Their prod-ucts were aimed specifically atthe vast Negro market beinglargely overlooked by competi-tors. Leonard's partners be-came disenchanted after only ayear and asked him to buy outtheir interests. Chess Recordsemerged from the transaction.

Under his sole ownership, theChess label benefited from thetireless salesmanship of itsfounder and catalyst. He beganoriginally without distributors,touring the South in his sta-tion wagon and peddling re-leases directly to the con-sumers. This experience hassince proved invaluable ingauging market trends andevaluating customer prefer-ences.

Covered HitIn 1947, Billy Eckstine was

riding the charts with "MyFoolish Heart." Chess decidedto cover the hit with an instru-mental version-no small risk

in view of Mr. B's dominanceof the market. Leonard (here-after referred to by his firstname to avoid confusion withthe label itself) contacted GeneAmmons, the great jazz saxistwhom he had befriended at hisniteclub, to do an instrumentalversion. It can best be de-scribed modestly as a smashhit. Distributors throughoutthe country began pursuingLeonard. The best evidence ofthe mutual respect in whichthey hold one another is thefact that not only his very firstdistributor, Jake Friedman ofAtlanta's Southland Distribu-tors, is still with him but alsoall but a mere three of the orig-inal distributors continue torepresent Leonard's labels.

The succession of rhythm -&-blues hits continued unabated.Major diskeries unashamedlycopied Chess hits for the popmarket, but Leonard was in nodanger of being overtaken inthe expansive Negro marketwhich he had cultivated so well.

A few examples of his pace-setting: "Sincerely," whichbrought The McGuire Sisters tofame, first recorded on Chessby the Moonglows. The sametrio covered The Moonglows'

waxing of "Most of All." "SeeYa' Later, Alligator," spring-board for Bill Haley and TheComets, was originally cut byBobby Charles on Chess. PatBoone's "I'll Be Home" emergedfrom a Chess disk by The Fla-mingos. "I Don't Know," aWillie Mabon original on Chess,later brought recognition toBuddy Morrow on Victor.

Other milestones include theenormous r&b hit "Rollin'Stone" by Muddy Waters, re-putedly one of the most authen-tic blues singers in America,and "Juke" by Little Walter.It is also noteworthy to reportthat Joe Williams' original ver-sion of "Everyday" bore theChess imprint, and that ElvisPresley was runnerup to LowellFulson in originating "Recon-sider, Baby."

credits for this impressive ar-ray of hits with his brotherPhil, who is Vice -President ofthe organization. An honorgraduate of Western KentuckyUniversity and a star halfbackthere, he joined Leonard atChess immediately after hisdischarge from the Army in

1946. Officially, he is co -direc-tor of the company with pri-mary responsibility in the areaof artists' relations.

A third member of the execu-tive team is the founder's son,Marshall. He supervises ex-panding overseas operations ofthe firm, which is now repre-sented in Europe by the ChessInternational label. Otherforays overseas are in the plan-ning stages.

"Chuck Berry," emphasizedLeonard in his offices on Chi-cago's S. Michigan Avenue, "besure to mention the importanceof Chuck Berry to all of us.He's one in a million." Berry'ssales indicate he's one in many,many millions. His success hasbeen a vital factor in the stronggrowth of the Chess operation.The Beatles, to cite only oneoutstanding example, creditmuch of their style to the influ-ence of Berry. On a recent tourof England, the Chess stalwartwas mobbed by fans with thesame enthusiasm shown TheBeatles here.

The Argo label, started orig-inally as an exclusively LP out-let, jumped to prominence in1955 with an album by Al Hib-bler. A year later, Ahmed Ja-mal joined the team, cuttingthree albums before hittingwith "But Not For Me." He isnow another strong, steadyseller in the company stable.

An interesting sidelight tothis highly personalized organ-ization is the owner's insistenceon loyalty to his originalsources of strength. Chess hadno product acceptable to so-called "white" stations untilrock -&-roll became the termin-ology for what is still basicallyrhythm -&-blues. Major labelsset out on desperate searchesfor talent in this category-anarea where Leonard was al -

BY TED RANDALHOLLYWOOD-I am very often disturbed by the person who

smugly steps up to me and says, "Top 40 is just rock and rollfor the kids." If that is so, our younger set is as interested in thepast as the present, for today's Record World Top 100 Pop chartindicates that such artists as Dean Martin and Frank Sinatraoccupy prominent positions among the listings supposedly re-served for teenage idols only.

Our teenagers apparently are showing a greatinterest in Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand,Nancy Wilson, Al Hirt and Andy Williams. Otherfavorites of the kids are such rock and roll artistsas Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole and TheRamsey Lewis Trio. Let's be honest. All of theseartists have records that are being played onTop 40 stations, and they are being enjoyed andpurchased by adults! Of course, the teenagerslike Top 40 and Rock and Roll, but Top 40stations play all kinds of music, and it's enjoyedby adults as well as teenagers.

Many adults will not admit that the preceding argument isvalid. They feel that adults are interested in any buy only albums,most of which are heard anywhere but on a Top 40 station. Turn-ing the page over in my copy of Record World to the Top 100 LPs(which everyone knows are purchased only by adults), I'm amazedto find The Beatles occupy the first and third positions. TheAnimals, Roy Orbison, The Four Seasons and even The Chip-munks are also among the 20 best-selling albums, and if onechecks most of the albums listed he'll find a great abundance ofalbums by artists who first gained their popularity with singlesthat were played almost exclusively on Top 40 stations.

Top 40 radio may not be everybody's "cup of tea," but carefulperusal of the single and LP listings clearly indicates that mostpeople do listen to it, and a lot of them are influenced enough tobuy what they hear either in single or LP form. They just won'tadmit it. * * *

A re-cent addition to the home officelineup is Dick La Palm, whofunctions as head of the newcreative department, liaison be-tween all divisions and adver-tising copy supervisor. Dramatic new packaging andcataloging are being initiatedby Chess. The same forward -thinking is being applied to al-bum ideas and in artist sign-ings. Chess will retain itsimage as a foremost rhythm -&-blues label as it expands, andArgo is growing, too, in all di-rections to encompass both jazz

`Most Saleable Album Release'From Smash - Fontana

CHICAGO-A new fall re-lease by Smash Records andits companion label, FontanaRecords, offering eight albumsin a sales plan entitled "SalesRoute '64," was announcedthis week by Charlie Fach.

The Smash -Fontana 1964 fallmerchandise, which includespackages by Jerry Lee Lewis,Pete Drake, Bill Justis, AnnaKing and famous internationalartists, was called, "the mostsaleable album release in thefirm's history," by Fach.

The "Sales Route '64" plan,in effect from Oct. 15 throughDec. 31, will offer the entireSmash and Fontana catalogs,including the eight top -sellnew releases, to distributors ata special discount. Sales -stimu-lating merchandising aids andan extensive advertising, pub-licity and promotion programis included.

A series of six separate re-gional, distributor meetingshave been set in 24 cities tointroduce the new release andsales plan to distributors andtheir sales and promotionstaffs. A slide film productpresentation, personally nar-rated by Bob Hope, will unveilthe fall merchandise and salesplan at the distributor meet-ings. Hope is the God -Fatherof Douglas Robert Mink, twoyear -old son of Alan Mink, Na-tional Promotion Manager ofSmash.

Guess what? I'm quittingGreat Britain! Well, for a wholeweek, anyway! In a few days,I'm flying to Belfast, NorthernIreland to do some p.a. recordshows at the Belfast TV & Radioexhibition. As I've never been toIreland (my mother didn't comefrom there), I'm anxious to seejust how green it really is!

As you know, The Bachelorshail from Ireland, and this week,they're at No. 6. Already, they'vebegun to climb your top 100.Who knows, I might return toLondon with a broad Irish ac-cent-they might deport me backto Ireland because of it. Perhaps

I'd better ring my personal manager Bunny Lewis and havehim cancel the whole deal! How lucky you are that you all don'thave my problems, huh? Now let me tell you that you shouldn'talways believe in the cliches that have been going around sincethe time when a perfectly respectable chappie named Columbustold us that a world as flat as a pancake was entirely out of thequestion! You know the ones I mean. . . . "A stitch in time savesnine." . . . "People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones." . . .

"You can't take it with you." Etc., etc. Well, the one youshouldn't believe in is, "You can't have the best of both worlds,"because your Roy Orbison can, and has them, namely No. 1 onboth sides of the Atlantic with "Oh Pretty Woman." No doubthe'll be warbling that on TV's "Sunday Night At TheLondon Palladium" on Oct. 18, when he'll have for company thegreat Errol Garner.

Talking of pianists, I had the great pleasure last week of meet-ing and working with that irrepressible keyboard craftsmen,Peter Nero. I brought back several of his albums from New Yorkin 1963, and completed the list this year. I was asked to intro-duce him on his own "Meet Peter Nero In Person" show on BBC2 TV channel, and I must say that his reception was deservingof his great talent. Incidentally, Peter, if you happen to readthis column (and all the best people do!) I played your "I WantTo Hold Your Hand" track over lunch to Brian Epstein, and hewas highly amused.

The Hit Parade over here? Well, you know all about No. 1and young Roy who kept your Supremes from taking over thatcoveted spot themselves (those gals are here at the moment, andwe love 'em to death). Julie Rogers has climbed into that No. 5spot with "The Wedding" and, I'm delighted to tell you, gavea brilliant performance at the "Grand Gala du Disque" TV showfrom Amsterdam, Holland the other night. Matt Munro has justentered the top 20 at No. 17 with "Walk Away." (remember Matt'sbig one, "Portrait Of My Love?") Cliff Richard's revived"Twelfth Of Never" and entered the top brass again, as hasDionne Warwick's "Reach Out for Me," The Ronettes' "Do I LoveYou" and the late Buddy Holly's "Love's Made a Fool of You,"and of course Henry Mancini's cracked the top 20 at No. 18 with"How Soon." Last week, I had the pleasure of working on BBC's"Juke Box Jury" with your Gene Pitney, and I'm still at a lossas to why his "It Hurts To Be In Love" hasn't shown here as yet.I hope his fans ease the pain very quickly!

Gazing out of my roof garden window, I know without anydoubt that it's gonna' be a wet and misty night, but I should care!You see within two hours, I shall be seated indoors on the stageof London's Camberwell Town Hall about to play to a live audi-ence my "Classical Pick Of The Pops." It's sort of an experiment.I wonder if they'll think I'm a bit of a nutcase introducing artistson record the calibre of Maria Callas, Jussi Bjorling, The Phil-harmonia Orchestra directed by Wilhelm Furtwangler, Victoriade los Angeles, etc. Well, you've heard the old cliche, "You canlead a disk jockey to a higher plane, but you can't make him fly!"

NEW YORK-Columbia Rec-ords' newest folk group, ThePilgrims, were honored at aspecial press party held at theBitter End nightclub on Colum-bus Day, Monday, Oct. 12.

The trio, currently headliningthe new program at the BitterEnd, has been hailed as the mostexciting new folk group to ap-pear since Peter, Paul and Mary.Ironically, Peter, Paul and Marymade their first New York ap-pearance at the same club. ThePilgrims consist of three ver-satile young entertainers. BobGuillaume recently starred as"Sportin' Life" in the New YorkCity Center production of"Porgy and Bess," and has anumber of other importantBroadway credits. The Pilgrims' debut album."Just Arrived/The Pilgrims"was released by Columbia thismonth. `Pajama Party' LPTo Disney RecordsNEW YORK - Disneyland

Records will release the sound-track album from the forth-coming American InternationalPictures filmusical, "PajamaParty," label's Eastern SalesManager Bob Larsen told Rec-ord World last week.

The LPackage will be avail-able in two or three weeks. Themovie stars Annette, TommyKirk, Elsa Lanchester, DonnaLoren, Buster Keaton and spe-cial guest star Dorothy La-mour.

Larsen also infos that theDisney LP, "Haunted House,"is also doing very well for thelabel, coming as it does duringthe Halloween period. Com-prised mainly of spooky soundeffects, the album has also justbeen supplied with pumpkinstickers. And, of course, thehighly acclaimed Disney movieand soundtrack, "Mary Pop -pins," continues to prove aboon to the diskery.

Thesweet, heavy rhythms of thebossa nova and the smoothlyrical approach of the saxist,once one of the deans of jazz'"Cool School," offer each otherthe perfect musical comple-ment.

Getz has a 21 -year -old vibistwho is musically mature beyondhis years: Gary Burton. And healso composes. Burton's contri-bution to the music on handwas a happy tune titled "ASinging Song." The vibist has,of course, an excellent tutor inGetz and could become one ofjazz' next big guys.

All in all, a pleasant and re-warding evening. But then, wealways like the sound of StanGetz.

Bennett, President, LibertyRecords, has announced that hisfirm has reached a settlementwith Decca Records on behalfof its contract with P. J. Proby.

Bennett, who just returnedfrom England where Proby hasbeen recording, said that Lib-erty's agreement with Proby isin full force on all future re-leases following "Hold Me" and"Together." Several unre-leased tracks which Proby re-cently cut were turned over toLiberty by Decca.

Neely,formerly of King Records andthe Royal Plastics plant in Cin-cinnati, is moving to Nashvilleto assume the duties of GeneralManager under the Stardayhome offices in Madison, Tenn.He will work directly underPierce along with Chuck Chell-man, Starday's National SalesManager, and Tommy Hill, whois in charge of artists and re-pertoire. Neely, Chellman andHill will all be Vice Presidents.

During a six -year stay at KingRecords, Neely assisted SydNathan and at times was in fullcharge of the King operation,including the complete custommanufacturing setup, music pub-lishing, recording, plus salespromotion and administration.Hal's switch to Nashville is inrecognition of the healthy andgrowing state of the music in-dustry in the Nashville area,plus the rapid and continuinggrowth of the Starday countrymusic operation.

group, The Casuals, just finished a swinging session producedfor the Monument Label by Ronnie Shacklett and Gerald Nelson.Out of the session came "Mustang Two Plus Two," a hot littleitem that has everyone at the label excited. Ronnie, for thosewho don't know, is Brenda's husband.

Reports coming in from the distributors and one -stops aroundthe country indicate that Sonny James' new Capitol single,"You're The Only World I Know," could be his biggest since"Young Love." It has gotten more dj pick hits than anythingSonny's had since that monster of a record.

Decca's Earl Scott is enthused about his first release on thatlabel. Initial action here gives the go-ahead to the ballad side,"I'll Wander Back To You." Djs missed on the mailing canobtain copies by writing to Earl or his booker, Smiley Wilson, atthe Wil-Helm Agency, 801 16th Avenue South here in Nashville.

The old swinger, Shot Jackson, is back into the picture againwith a new girl vocalist and a new steel guitar sound, both ofwhich he hopes will be ready in time for the big Convention.And Kapp's Paul Cohen has them both set for sessions as soonas possible. The gal is lovely Donna Darlene and the new steelguitar is the Sho-Bud Dual String played by Jimmy Day. If sidesare not ready for release in time for the Convention, Shot saysthe guitar will be demonstrated in the Sho-Bud Room of theAndrew Jackson during the big festival by Day. Bookings forboth will be handled by the Gra-Mar Talent Agency here withShot handling the personal management end.

Epic's Billy Sherrill in the Windy City this week to producesides up there for the label. He's expecting Bobby Vinton intoMusic City probably the first week in November for an albumsession.

Brunswick's Demitriss Tapp did a rush session at ColumbiaStudios here last week with hubby Bob Tubert calling the shotsfrom the control room. Bill Justis did the arrangements and Bobsays they're wild. Sides are skedded for rush release.

ABC-Paramount's Felton Q. Jarvis did sessions last weekwith Steve Alaimo down in Florence, Ala. Many of the guys goto Florence to get the particular sound Rick Hall is getting fam-ous for. Felton also has Tommy Roe set for sessions at FredFoster's studios in the near future.

Buck Owens and The Buckaroos move into Las Vegas' GoldenNugget for a two -weeks stand beginning Oct. 22, then to Nash-ville for the Convention.

Joe Rhoten, prexy of Music City -based Canary Label, is reallyexcited about action on Barbara Dale's "There Stands My World"and forthcoming Charlie Rife single, "Are You Sure." These willbe two of the featured records on WENO Radio's all -day broad-cast for the label during the disk jockey convention. In fact,WENO will be on hand throughout the convention for such spon-sors as RCA Victor, Record World and others not set yet.

Victor's Chester Atkins hasn't exactly been standing still. Hehas done, or is going to do, sessions with Eddy Arnold, HankLocklin, Carl Belew, George Hamilton IV and cute Connie Smith.

Columbia's Don Law and Frank Jones had Jimmy Dean, JohnnyCash and Carl Smith in for dates last week. "Songs of Faith and Inspira-tion," a new album by the Rob-ert Shaw Chorale, should be asales winner. Unfortunately, acopy was unavailable at reviewtime but it will be covered indepth later. But dealers who re-member the fabulous sales suc-cess of their previous religiousalbums will do it all over againwith this new RCA Victor Shawpackage.

More strong Sept. -Oct. waxcomes from Morton Gould (asequel to his bestselling "JungleDrums") ; Leonard Pennario inan album of favorite, best-sellingpiano solos; "Humoresque"; JonVickers in an album of favor-ite Italian arias that havesold millions in previous wax-ings by Gigli, Bjoerling andCaruso; Marian Anderson andJohn McCormack (an ImmortalTreasury reissue) in albums oflight favorites that have alsosold millions of copies. For thechamber -music market Heifetzand Co. have a winner in a newrecording of Beethoven's FirstPiano Trio. Reissue of the spec-tacular Farrell-Svanholm Sieg-fried Act III also has an ex-ceptionally bright outlook.

Vickers VictoriousCanadian born tenor Jon

Vickers who, with Franco Co-relli, is currently the Met's mati-nee idol tenor, stars in an album,"Italian Arias," that may wellbe pivotal in his record career.

Every opera house the worldover is after Vickers' servicesand a hearing of this album re-veals why. He's master of thebig, soaring Italian aria and hedisplays a rich voice of glow-ing health in such all-time best-selling favorites as "Cielo emar," "M'appari," "Vestilagiubba" and "Recondita armo-nia." In the "Manento di Fede-rico" he displays a seductivemezzovoce as he spins out itsopening phrases. Vickers, in theliner notes, is quoted as sayingthat Italian opera caresses thevoice. Vickers certainly caressesand treasures the bel canto qual-ities of these arias. His voice isdarker than Bjoerling's andCorelli's, but his top has a thrill-ing ring all its own.

Vickers is in excellent voiceon the first side but to this list-ener, he seems to be more emo-tionally involved in the Side 2arias.

Dealers aware of the tremen-dous album business of legen-dary greats like Caruso, Bjoer-ling and Gigli can help Vickersbecome a big seller now gettingbehind this album and aggres-sively promoting it not only tothe opera buffs but to the massmarket that loves Neapolitansongs. Certainly this albumholds the same appeal as Corel-li's Neapolitan song albums onAngel, and this mass marketshould be exploited to the hilt.Radio play is important andthe many short cuts lend them-selves to inclusion in good mu-sic pop album stations who pro-gram popular Italian folk songs.Experienced opera conductorTullio Serafin guides the RomeOpera House Orchestra in ac-companiments that wring themost drama out of these popu-lar operatic standards.

Pennario DelightsA delightful collection of pop-

ular encores is pianist LeonardPennario's contribution toRCA's fall release. Thousandswho snapped up his Capitolalbums, made with the Holly-wood Bowl, should be in themarket for Pennario's latest.Album is appropriately titled"Humoresque" and includeswell-known encores like theDvorak and Tchaikovsky "Hu-moresques" along with otherlight favorites like Gershwin'sThree Preludes, Schubert's fam-ous Moment Musicale No. 3,Beethoven's beloved salon piece,"Fur Elise," and Debussy's"Golliwog's Cakewall." Inter-mixed are seldom heard, butnevertheless equally delightfulpieces by Rachmaninoff, Tchai-kovsky, Grieg, Rubinstein andFella.

Pennario tosses them all offwith elan, underlining their hu-mor with a pianistic flair thatgives the album wide appeal tomillions who struggled throughmany of these pieces while learn-ing to master the keyboard. Theexceptionally short cuts madethe album ideal filler materialfor good music pop album sta-tions as well as longhair outlets.

Gould's Aural DelightLaunched in September and

already doing a brisk business inMorton Gould's sequel to hisbest-selling "Jungle Drums."The new album is called "More

Jungle Drums." Consumers ex-pecting accent on the percussionwill be disappointed. Instead ofa booming percussion spectacu-lar, which consumers may be ledinto thinking lies within, we aretreated to clever Gould arrange-ments in which, most notably,the tambourine is used to accentthe melodic line. There is someattractive by-play for stereo-especially among winds andbrass in several of the numbers- but a booming percussionspectacular this isn't.

Such light, south of the borderselections as "Espana Cani,""The Peanut Vendor," "Brazil,""Ay Ay Ay" and "Siboney" givethe album tremendous appeal tothe pop album market. The LPis clearly aimed at the EdmundoRos, Mantovani, Kostelanetz,Percy Faith buyer.

Album is an aural delight, andthe inclusion of first recordingsof four Afro-Cuban Dances byLecuona (of "Malaguena" fame)give the percussion more to dothan the other selections. Gouldhas even supplied an originaltrifle: "Calypso Souvenir." Ex-cellent sound.

Anderson at TwilightRCA also has some splendid

items for the vocal market. Mar-ian Anderson's new album,"Songs at Eventide," with ar-rangements by Robert RussellBennett who also conducts thechamber orchestra, offers thesinger in a low-key album offavorites that have sold millionsthroughout the years. Suchsongs as "Loch Lomond,""Comin' Thro' the Rye" and"Drink To Me Only With ThineEyes" take on a radiant warmthin Miss Anderson's perform-ances. The dark, rich colors ofthe voice have never been cap-tured better, and Bennett's ar-rangements (for recorders,harpsichord, string quintet andwinds) have a haunting, old -English flavor. Stunning moodcover is sure-fire come-on. Deal-ers who tie-in with Miss Ander-son's farewell concert tour ofAmerica can expect good sales.

Offbeat Christmas item isBenjamin Britten's Medievalflavored "Ceremony of Carols"in a new recording by the Rob-ert Shaw Chorale. Album alsoincludes Britten's settings of thefamous anthem, "Rejoice in theLamb," and the "Festival TeDeum." The a capella chorus

sings with a precision andthrust and the delicate tonalshadings associated with thisoutstanding choral group.

Heifetz-PiatigorskyBig events in New York con-

cert life were the three Heifetz-Piatigorsky concerts in CarnegieHall this past September. Tocapitalize on the rare live ap-pearance of this stellar combin-ation RCA released a stunningalbum of Beethoven's early Trio,Op. 1, No. 1 played by Heifetz,Piatigorsky and guest artistJacob Lateiner.

Farrell -McCormackAlso on release are two out-

standing reissues from RCA's"Treasury of Immortal Perform-ances" series: the 1949 record-ing of the Act 3, Scene 3 fromWagner's "Siegfried" with held-entenor Set Svanholm and So-prano Eileen Farrell, and ErichLeinsdorf conducting the Ro-chester Philharmonic. T h ebig thrill of this recording isFarrell. She is in splendid voiceand to hear her float those longWagnerian lines is a thrillingexperience.

RCA has reached into itsacoustics vault for an album ofJohn McCormack singing "Songsof Sentiment." The transfersare vast improvements over thenoisy originals and the voicecomes through with its lustre.

Victrola ReissuesHard on the Victrola reissue

of Puccini's "Madame Butter-fly" starring Anna Moffo in Au-gust comes the reissue of an-other popular opera, "Lucia diLammermoor," with a cast re-cruited from the MetropolitanOpera. Roberta Peters is thebeautiful Lucia who goes mad.Cast also includes Jan Peerce,Giorgio Tozzi and PhilipMaero. The Rome Opera HouseOrchestra and Chorus is con-ducted by Erich Leinsdorf.

Another Victrola reissue isMonteux's superb reading ofBeethoven's "Pastoral" Sym-phony with the Vienna Philar-monic-a decided bargain at theVictrola price.

Sales look good for two moreVictoria reissues: an album ofSibelius and Grieg favorites-including the bestselling "Fin-landia" by Charles Mackerrasand the London Proms Sym-phony.
