The Ben Franklin Book of Easy and Incredible Experiments by James G. Cook

Have discussions with the class on Benjamin Franklin’s accomplishments and experiments.

1. Apprentice- One who is learning a trade or art by practical experience under skilled workers.

Connection: When Benjamin Franklin was 12 years old, he was sent to work as a printer’s apprentice with his older brother James.

2. Diplomat- One employed or skilled in diplomacy, the art and practice of conducting negotiations between nations.

Connection: Benjamin Franklin was now a diplomat, and he set sail for England to talk to the lawmakers about the problems with the English government.

3. Treason- The offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government.

Connection: If the English had captured Benjamin Franklin seeking the help of the French, he would have been tried for treason and probably hanged.

Brainstorm Benjamin Franklin’s accomplishments with the whole class.

Have each student write a paragraph about one of his accomplishments.

Include dates in the paragraph.

Students will illustrate their paragraphs by using markers, crayons, colored pencils, magazines, and construction paper.

Students will then place their illustrations on a big class timeline.

Students will share with the class their paragraphs and illustrations on Benjamin Franklin’s accomplishments.

In 1752 he conducted the kite and key experiment that lead to discovery of electricity.

In 1775 he was Elected as a Pennsylvania delegate to 2nd Continental Congress.

In 1776 he drafted The Declaration of Independence.

In 1778 he negotiated and signed Treaty of Alliance with France.

In 1783 he Invented bifocals.

In 1787 he signed the United States Constitution.

In 1789 he became president of the Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery.
