G. Procedure: 1. Introduce the lesson by showing a video about a fireworks show for the 4th of

July- Shoulder Partners:“Where have you heard or seen it before?” Answer: Fourth of July, Independence Day “What do you think the fireworks mean?”“What do you and your families do for the Fourth of July?”-Call on students to name something that a group member said about what her or his family does during the Fourth of July.-List the activities that the students name of on the whiteboard -Explain that the Fourth of July is a day that we celebrate the fact that we are free in the place that we live in.

4. Call the students’ attention5. Call group leaders to pick up Patriotic Holidays Scenario Sheets for their groups.

H. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

Patriotic Holiday Scenarios:1. Veterans Day is on the day of November 11th of every year. On this day we celebrate veterans of the United States military. Veterans of the United States military are people who had a lot of experience protecting the United States from harm for many years. On this day people have parades with marching bands, dancers, and singers who sing the national anthem, called the “Star Spangled Banner.”-Read the scenario to the students.-Ask:“What is the patriotic holiday?”“What are the patriotic symbols?”“What are the patriotic activities?”2. Memorial Day is on the last Monday of May each year. On this day we remember those people that died when they were serving the United States. People do this by decorating graves or memorials of those people who died in the Civil War. -Read the scenario to the students.-Ask:“What is the patriotic holiday?”

“What is the patriotic symbol?”“What is the patriotic activity?”

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. The students are to “name a traditional U.S. patriotic activity, holiday, or symbol.” They are doing this if they are able to listen to the descriptions of certain patriotic holidays and explain the patriotic holiday, activity, and symbol within each of the scenarios.

I. Closure: Shoulder Partners:

“Is Memorial Day a patriotic holiday, patriotic symbol, or a patriotic activity?”“Can you name a patriotic symbol?”“What is a patriotic activity that people do every year?”

J. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

The part of the lesson that I think will be easiest to teach is the meaning of a patriotic holiday. This is because it includes a holiday that the students will most likely be familiar with, the Fourth of July, which I use in my introduction. The students will be able to pull out background knowledge easily from previous years that they have been to a fireworks show at a local park or just from their homes watching the shows on television.

2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The part that will be most challenging for me to teach would be the vocabulary. This is because it is very possible for first graders to get the terms holiday, activity, and symbol confused.

3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?I will follow up or extend this lesson by taking the students to the library and have them find books on different patriotic holidays. I would then have them write their own stories about what they would do on the patriotic holidays of the books that they have chosen. There would be only one holiday for each student. I would require them to continue to name the patriotic holiday, patriotic activity, and patriotic symbol.

4. What can you do for students who don’t grasp the concepts? For the students who do not grasp the concepts, I would have them look for videos on patriotic holidays to gain more information on the topic of patriotic holidays, patriotic activities, and patriotic symbols. I would then have them

explain to me verbally the different ones that they found and why they are patriotic holidays, patriotic activities, and patriotic symbols.

5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? The part of the lesson that I think I might need to change is the amount of vocabulary terms that I included. I think I might have added too many for the students to remember them all.

6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of this lesson plan was gathering ideas for the activities. I wasn’t sure about what to do to teach the lesson at first because I am not particularly interested in the topic. Once I looked through the internet for the vocabulary within the standards, the ideas came through afterward because of all of the colors and images. I then remembered things that I did when I was in elementary to learn about the vocabulary like coloring in blank images.
