    A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson is designed for fourth grade students to learn how to read a

map, and specifically how to use a compass rose. This lesson uses the 4th Grade

Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook States and Regions (p. 14-15) and Nevada-

A journey of Discovery by Michael Green (p. 214)

    .

    B. Target Population: Grade Level: 4th grade Skill Level: students at all learning levels Grouping: whole groupreading and discussion; partnerPractice theSkill and

    5. Project on the elmo the map of Nevada counties and county seats on p. 214 in the

book Nevada- A journey of Discovery by Michael Green. Explain how to use the

intermediate directions on the compass rose to identify locations. Askseveral

    questions such as the following:

Where is Elko in relation to Winnemucca? (Elko is east of Winnemucca.)

Where is Carson City in relation to Las Vegas? (Carson City is Northwest of LasVegas.)

    6. Closure: Have students work in their table groups (consisting of 4 students) and ask

location questions like the above. Each student in the group comes up with one question

that the rest of the group has to answer.

    F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

The map of Nevada will still be projected on the elmo. Students will answer the

following questions on a sheet of paper:

    1. In what corner of the page is the compass rose? (southwest)2. Where is Hawthorne in relation to Tonopah? (northwest)3. Where is Ely in relation to Winnemucca (southeast)4. Where is Eureka in relation to Hawthorne? (northeast)

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson.

Students must identify and use intermediate directions on a compass rose to

locate places on a map of Nevada. By answering the above questions,

students will demonstrate understanding of this standard.

    G. Reflection:1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

I think reading and discussing the pages in the textbook will be the easiest to teach.

    2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?I dont think any part of this lesson will be difficult to teach

How will you follow up or extend this lesson?

As an extension to this lesson, I would do the activity on p. 87-91 of Geography for

Every Kid by Janice Van Cleave in which the students make a compass rose out of

paper and use it to tell the direction in degrees that different places are from each

    other.

    3. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who dont understand the concepts in this lesson, I would work with

them using the map of Nevada and further explain the questions and answers that

were used in step 5 of the procedure.

    4. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?I dont think any part of this lesson needs to be changed.

    5. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part was trying to decide if I should use the online textbook or the

activity in Geography for Every Kid by Janice Van Cleave. I kept going back and

forth then decided to use that activity as the lesson extension
