Coming to America LyricsNeil Diamond
Far,We've been traveling far
Without a homeBut not without a star
Free,Only want to be free
We huddle closeHang on to a dream
On the boats and on the planesThey're coming to AmericaNever looking back again,They're coming to America
HomeDon't it seem so far away
Oh, we're traveling light todayIn the eye of the stormIn the eye of the storm
HomeTo a new and a shiny place
Make our bed and we'll say our graceFreedom's light burning warmFreedom's light burning warm

Everywhere around the worldThey're coming to America
Ev'ry time that flag's unfurledThey're coming to America
Got a dream to take them thereThey're coming to America
Got a dream they've come to shareThey're coming to America
They're coming to AmericaThey're coming to AmericaThey're coming to AmericaThey're coming to America
Today, Today,Today, Today, Today
My country 'tis of thee (today)Sweet land of liberty (today)
Of thee I sing (today)Of thee I sing
Today, Today, TodayToday, today, today......

Unit Plan 1: Reflection Page
1. Where did you get the ideas and materials for this unit plan? Include website names, URLs, book titles and authors.
I was in my young 20s when I was hired as an extra on the film, "The Jazz Singer" with Neil Diamond (I'm a bathing-beauty on the beach, but was blurred out in post-production). "Coming to America" was a big hit during that time, and I liked the song. It is a strong, hopeful song, and it just popped into my head when I began this lesson, so I knew I had to use it. I think the students will love to sing with it. I went to YouTube for the videos. I wanted something fairly short, yet told the story well. I really tried to find something interesting to 3rd graders.
2. What were the easiest and most challenging parts of writing this unit plan?
This unit was probably the easiest of the five. There is a lot of information out there about immigrants and immigration, and it was easy to find. I spent many an hour going through all I could find and choosing the best option.
3. What suggestions do you have for yourself for the next time you write unit plans?

Spend more time being more creative with the activities. I really want to hold the attention of my students, and changing things up makes a big difference as to whether they will listen and learn or not. I tried to be careful not to cross my history with any other strand, but not sure I succeeded.
