SAY: Today you will take a reading test. All items include an incomplete sentence and four words listed below as answer choices. Read the incomplete sentence and choose the best word to complete the sentence.
Have students look at the Sample item on page 2.
SAY: It is at night. I need to know which word best completes the sentence. I’ll read the words: red, big, dark, high. I’ll try each word in the sentence. It is red at night. It is big at night. It is dark at night. It is high at night. I know that the sun goes down at night, and it gets dark. That’s why the answer is C, dark. Do the rest of the items the same way. Remember to choose only ONE answer for each item. Mark your answers on the answer sheet.
When everyone is ready to begin the test,
SAY: Before you begin working on your test, here are a few reminders:
• Read all test directions.
• When there is a paragraph with an item, read it to help you choose the best word to complete the sentence.
• Make sure you are answering on the correct line of the answer sheet.
• Check all of your answers after completing the test.
• When you are finished with your test, please close it and put it on the corner of your desk.
• Some items on the test will be harder than others. You may not be able to do all of the items on the test. Just do your best. If the paragraphs become too difficult for you to read, you may close your test booklet and sit quietly.
You may now begin taking the test.

How to Use the Student Placement Guide
Step 1: Convert the Score
Once you have scored the test, countthe number of correct answers on thetest. Beside each number correct is itscorresponding Lexile® measure.
Example: A student answers 30 of the 40questions correctly. The number correct of30 converts to a Lexile® measure of 805L.
Step 2: Place the Student
Now that you have the Lexile® measure, look at the chart to find the Edge level intowhich the student should be placed. TheLexile® levels of the Edge program overlap, giving you the flexibility to choosebetween two levels of the program.
Example: A student with a Lexile® measureof 805L may be placed in Level A orLevel B. Use your professional judgmentto choose the level that you think willprovide challenge without frustration.

SAY: The name of this picture is pan. The first sound in pan is /p/. That’s why the circle next to the p is filled in. (Name the pictures in items 1–4, then repeat the directions.)
Script for Sample, Page 17
SAY: The name of this picture is fan. The last sound in fan is /n/. That’s why the circle next to the n is filled in. (Name the pictures in items 5–8, then repeat the directions.)
Script for Sample, Page 18
SAY: I see a cat in the picture, so I’ll read all four words: cap, cot, cat, cup. The third word is cat. That’s why its circle is filled in. Do the rest of the items in this way.
Script for Sample, Page 19
SAY: (Read the question.) The name of the little picture is globe, globe. Now I need to find another word that has the sound /o/ that I hear in globe. I’ll read the words: no, not, mop, song. No and globe both have the sound /o/. That’s why the circle next to no is filled in. Answer the rest of the questions in the same way. (Name the rebuses for students: feet, cake, bike, globe.)
Script for Sample, Page 20
SAY: Look at the picture. The dancers are jumping. The -ing means they are doing it now. That’s why the circle next to jumping is filled in. Do the rest of the items the same way.
Script for Directions, Page 21
SAY: You did items like this earlier in the test. Choose the word that names the picture. Do the items.
Script for Directions, Page 22
SAY: You answered questions like this earlier in the test. Read each question. Say the name of the little picture to yourself. Find the same sound. Answer the rest of the questions in the same way. (Name the rebuses for students: cage, cake.)

Script for Sample 1, Page 23
SAY: (Read the sentence.) I need to show where to divide contest into syllables. I’ll read the three ways and say them to myself: cont-est, co-ntest, con-test. There are two consonants between the vowels in contest, so I’ll divide contest between the two consonants. When I say con-test, that sounds right, too. That’s why the circle for con-test is filled in. Do the rest of the items the same way.
Script for Sample 2, Page 23
SAY: (Read the sentence.) First I’ll think about the important words in the sentence. I know what a beach is. I see the suffix -y means “full of,” so sandy means “full of sand.” I think the sentence means that the beach is full of sand. Now I’ll read each sentence below. Yes, the circle next to that sentence is filled in. Do the rest of the items the same way.

How to Use the Student Profile FormStep 1: Create the Profile
Once you have scored the test, circle the numbers of the items the student answered correctly. Then calculate the percentages.
Example: A student answers 25 of the 45 questions correctly, which converts to a percentage score of 56%. This student will benefit from the Phonics Review provided in each cluster of Fundamentals. You might also consider using Inside Phonics to augment phonics instruction (see next step).

Step 2: Optional Placement for Inside PhonicsIf your instructional plan for phonics and decoding includes Inside Phonics, calculate a separate score for each of the three placement points. Place the student into the earliest placement point where the score is below 80%.
13 87
9 60
3 20
25 56
For placement point 2, the student correctly answered 9 of the 15 questions, which is 60%. Since this is below 80%, use this placement point, which begins with Lesson 33.
Example: A student correctly answered 13 of the 15 questions for placement point 1, which is 87%; since this exceeds 80%, the student should be placed higher.
