A member of Commission B ofDenpasar House, I WayanMariyana Wandhira, following theinauguration of the Head ofDenpasar House, Tuesday (Oct27), asserted this matter. Wandhirasaid that the spread of beach ownedby Denpasar City ranged fromPadanggalak to Mertasari Beach.Within such zone, there were fivepoints becoming the central oftourism activity. The five pointsconsisted of Sunrise Beach, LeMayeur Museum (Inna Grand BaliBeach), Sindu Beach, SemawangBeach, Segara Ayu Beach andMertasari Beach.

It was said that out of five cen-tral points of tourism activity, life-guards filled in not all points. Hisparty worried if something badhappened to visitors, rescuing pro-

Serangan Island being famousfor its seaweed potential and deco-rative fish has changed since 13years ago. Particularly, this hap-pened when Bali Turtle Island De-velopment (BTID) committed ahuge reclamation at the areaknown as Turtle Island.

Reclamation project reachingthreefold of original extent ofSerangan Island originated in theintention of BTID to establish anintegrated tourist resort at loca-tion. Unfortunately, such presti-gious project plan commenced byreclamation since 1996 has nowleft only its plan. Project realiza-tion is still left undecided. How isthe look of Serangan today?

RECLAMATION of SeranganIsland has changed a number oflocal community orders. Today, the extent of Serangan is 491 hect-ares. In other words, the extent ofbeach filled reaches 379 hectares. This reclamation occurred at east-ern, southwestern and northwest-ern part of the island.

This reclamation discourse hasbeen heard when Bali was led byIda Bagus Mantra. At that time, asgovernor of Bali , IB Mantrafirmly rejected the plan. The rea-son was Serangan had its owntypicality. Besides, not all regionsof Bali should build starred hotelsbecause by doing so local commu-nity could not engage in the busi-ness. Starred hotels needed greatcapital. On that account, he wasvery concerned to promote homestay that could be owned by localcommunity. Similarly, it couldmake the house of local residentsinto accommodation for foreigntourists and this way could maxi-mally involve local community. Therefore, uniqueness of Baliwould remain to be maintainedand Balinese community wouldenjoy the advancement of tourismin person.

However, the plan finally passedafter the IB Mantra did no morelead Bali as Governor. Neverthe-less, this megaproject stayed toraise pros and cons in the midst oflocal community. Even, up to thismoment, the problem ensued at thearea has not entirely resolvedthough the project has taken placesince few years ago.

As evidences, a number of prob-lems also appeared to surfacewithin the past few years. For in-stance, there was objection of lo-

Commitment of Denpasar Government to work on tourism sector being famous for its beauti-ful Sanur Beach, in fact remains half-hearted. Its evidence, the availability of lifeguard becomingmust in creating the security for tourists at coastal area remains insufficient. At this moment,Denpasar only has 10 lifeguards (Balawista). This condition is judged less ideal to maintain thesecurity of visitors at Sanur Beach.

cess and other actions related to res-cuing would find obstacle. For in-stance, the incident occurred onGalungan holiday not long ago. Hesaid the incident afflicted a visitorwith his family swimming atMertasari Beach. It was unknownthe cause where such visitor waswashed away by waves and hookedonto a net of fisher. The rescuingeffort took a long time due to thenon-existence of lifeguard at thattime. “It is the impact of lacking forlifeguards at tourist object likeSanur Beach,” said Wandhira whois also a resident of Sanur.

It was said that it did not onlylack for lifeguards, but also its fa-cilities and infrastructure neededmore attention. If only the CityGovernment had an obvious com-mitment in managing marine tour-

ism, there was possibility to makecooperation with hotels existing atthe area. “Chiefly, it needs specialattention to the provision of facili-ties and infrastructure of lifeguards.Other than lifeguard itself, we alsoconsider that it lacks for facilitiesso it requires serious attention ofDenpasar City Government,” he ex-plained.

On responding on the lacking oflifeguard, the Head of DenpasarGovernment Tourism Office, I PutuBudiasa, admitted to have addedfive lifeguards to the existing onesin Sanur. “If it until reaches the con-trol of Serangan Beach, it needs acomprehensive study. For the timebeing, I think it has been coveredby this number,” said Budiasawhose confirmation was asked onlast Tuesday. (kmb12)

cal residents indicating that theywere forbidden to enter the area ofBTID after the greening projectcommitted by BTID. However, thisproblem was finally resolved afterlocal residents made a meeting atthe office of village head togetherwith the management of BTID.

A resident of Serangan, I KetutArya Saputra, last Tuesday (Oct27) admitted that many impacts oc-curred after reclamation carried outat the area of his village. Its nega-tive impact, he said, was the lossof livelihood of small fishers thatpreviously earned their bread andbutter at Serangan Beach. How-ever, after reclamation, those smallfishers could no more obtain fishclose to their area. They shouldenter into deep-sea area to get fish.More than that, seaweed farmersalso afflicted the impact of recla-mation. Their land for farming di-minished. “Seaweed farmers alsofelt the impact of existing reclama-tion,” said Arya Saputra.

Meanwhile, local residents ob-tained much benefit. By the open-ing of road access to the territoryof village that previously was iso-lated, they could park their vehicleconveniently in their house. Estab-l ishment of infrastructure inSerangan increased since theopening of road access to Bali Is-land.

Head of Serangan Village, IMade Poniman, met at the officeof Denpasar Mayor, last Thursday(Oct 22) confessed that some resi-dents could not entirely under-stand about the policy that wouldbe implemented by investor at thearea. This matter was caused bythe project worked on by BTIDhas not run entirely.

Poniman also admitted on theexistence of some changes tran-spired due the impact of reclama-tion taking place at the area. Forinstance, the matter of livelihoodof coastal community entirely de-pending on the potential of sea ofcourse felt disturbed due to recla-mation.

Arya Saputra acknowledgedthat reclamation carried out byBTID was once made into the areato disposal site of evidences ofcriminal deeds. In addition, manylocal residents found murder caseat the reclamation area. “On thataccount, the entry into BTID areais now made stricter,” said AryaSaputra. (ara)

ern slope of Gumang Hill, Bugbug,Karangasem, was dismantled for build-ing a villa. The villa belonging to Dutchinvestor was judged to have harmedthe environment and have not compliedwith the allocation. Thus was revealedin the session of Karangasem House, last Tuesday (Oct 27). I Nyoman Sadra,on the session put into question if thevilla had permit. If it had, why it wasallowed to build at the slope of hill al-leged to become the sacred territory ofGumang Temple.

In the meantime, the Head ofKarangasem Agency for Regional De-velopment (Bappeda), I Wayan ArthaDipa, said that he did not know aboutthe matter of permit belonging to villa.“Permit matter of the villa belonged tothe authority of the Head of IntegratedPermit Services,” he said.

Sadra regretted that the villa build-ing was permitted on hill by means ofdismantling the slopes of hill and it wasmade flat. The development sacrific-ing the conservation and beauty of na-ture has triggered a protest among anumber of foreign nature lovers stay-ing at Candidasa tourist resort. “If it isseen eastwardly from CandidasaBeach, the villa is obviously observed,”he affirmed.

to rabies through laboratory test. “Forty dogs stating to be positive to rabies were found at fiveregencies in Bali such as Badung (26), Denpasar (4), Karangasem (4), Bangli (1) and Tabanan(6),” said the Head of Bali Animal Husbandry Services, IB Alit, last Tuesday (Oct 27). He saidthat one dog stated to be positive to rabies was enough to become a measurement to commit avaccination and elimination to dog at the regency.

It was said that during the manage-ment of rabies in Bali, there were someobstacles found in the field such lessawareness and lacking of knowledgeabout rabies. Local community had lessawareness in helping the handling ofrabies.

“It is caused by the less knowledgeowned by community about rabies.Sometimes, when a dog vaccination ac-tivity is held at hamlets, they were re-luctant to bring their dog for vaccina-tion,” said Alit.Other obstacle was thelacking of attendants at regency/city tocommit the vaccination and dog elimi-nation and limited fund availability.

He admitted the fund given by Baliprovincial government to Animal Hus-

bandry Services to handle rabies wasIDR 600 million and has been spent forsome IDR 400 million for socializationand vaccination in the community.

The cost was beyond the provisionof rabies vaccine because it has beenprovided by central government,” saidAlit. He only expected the awarenessof community to rabies could be pro-gressively improved. If bitten by dogthey might not be panic.

It should be cleansed by flowingwater and soap for 15 minutes beforebringing to the nearest communityhealth center to asking for VAR.“Please do not kill the dog biting, butobserve it first.

If it does not die within two weeks,it can be ensured that it is not infectedby rabies,” explained Alit.Additionally,he said that administration of vaccineto dog would be very effective if thedog got booster vaccine or the secondvaccine. “The dog obtained boosterwill have immunity to rabies virus,” headded. Plan to Build a VillaNengah Suparta, stated that the Dutchinvestor just built two villas out of thesix villas planned. He thought that in-vestor has already had a building per-mit.

Sadra also added that before he be-came a member of the House, he onceput it into question to government re-lated to the development of villa onhills. Tenganan became the propertyof foreign investor. Even, investormade an artesian well with the depthof 80 meters on the peak of hill. Al-though this matter has been informedto government the development re-mained to continue. Meanwhile, manylocal residents worried about the mak-ing of artesian well on hills would re-sult in negative impact to other resi-dents under the hills, such as thesprings diminished or even ran dry. Infact, the water of river passing throughTenganan until Nyuh Tebel has de-creased and even the rice field at thearea could not be irrigated.

According to him, the land of Baliwould run out because owned by for-eign investor and finally it would chaseaway Balinese people. Now, local resi-dents have been surrounded, hills werecontrolled by foreign investors and sowas agricultural land. The problem isthat when the land has been owned byinvestor local community could notknow what they do inside. (013)

CAPE CANAVERAL -Weather delays Tuesday forcedNASA to postpone by 24 hours thelaunch of a prototype rocket de-signed to return astronauts to theMoon, and perhaps one day toMars.

Standing 327 feet (100-meters)tall, the Ares I-X is the longestrocket ever built and when lift-offgoes ahead it will be the firstspacecraft the Kennedy SpaceCenter has launched other than ashuttle in 30 years.

Tuesday, however, proved frus-trating for space enthusiasts as firstthe weather, then a ship at sea, andthen clouds conspired to delay thelong-awaited launch at CapeCanaveral in Florida.

NASA said it would try again ina four-hour window from 8:00 am(1200 GMT) Wednesday. “Overall, the weather will improve,” a spaceagency official said.

The Ares I-X is a prototype ofthe Ares I, which NASA hopes tohave in service by 2015 to replaceits aging shuttle fleet that is due tobe mothballed next year.

During the two-minute testflight NASA aims to gather datafrom more than 700 sensors placedalong the rocket that should enableengineers to fine-tune its design.

The Ares craft is intended tolaunch mission crews into orbit inthe Orion spacecraft, which is stillunder development.

Ares and Orion are part of Con-stellation, NASA’s grand programto send astronauts back to theMoon by 2020, and then on to Marsand other destinations.

The test flight is crucial as theWhite House is considering a re-port ordered by President BarackObama’s administration that raisesconcerns about Ares and the wholeConstellation project.

Launch of new NASA rocketdelayed by 24 hours

A commission, chaired byNorman Augustine, a former chiefexecutive at aerospace giantLockheed Martin, concluded thatthe program “appears to be on anunsustainable trajectory” and seeksto achieve goals not matched by re-sources.

The Ares rocket has sufferedmajor development problems andits hefty price tag has fueled criti-cism of NASA, an agency notori-ous for its cost overruns.

The initial budget for the Con-stellation program was set at 28billion dollars, but has swollen toat least 44 billion.

Ed Crawley, a member of theAugustine commission set up byObama to review the space plansof his predecessor George W.Bush, said that Ares I was “not theright ship” for post-shuttle spaceflight.

“The question is not can webuild Ares I, but should we buildAres I,” Crawley said.

But Doug Cooke, associate ad-ministrator of NASA’s ExplorationSystems Mission Directorate, wasupbeat ahead of the launch.

“This test is very important,” hetold reporters last week. “The datais important to us, regardless ofwhat comes next.”

NASA’s yearly budget is about18 billion dollars, 10 billion ofwhich is plowed into the humanspace flight program, chiefly in de-veloping the Ares I rocket and theOrion Crew Exploration Vehicle.

The Augustine commission saidan additional three billion dollarsa year are needed for NASA tomeet Constellation program goalsor take human space flight the nextstep beyond the existing Interna-tional Space Station (ISS).

If weather delays the test flightagain on Wednesday, the team hasa four-hour launch window eachday until Friday.

Padangbai is located at PadangCustomary Village. For those whoremember, the name Padang waschanged into Padangbai—etymo-logically, the word Padangbaicomes from Padang Bay. Origi-nally, this coastal village enclosedby hills, was small village that of-ten slipped from public attention. But in recent times, Padangbai hasdeveloped rapidly as it is locatednear the Dang Kahyangan SilayuktiTemple—associated with the leg-endary priest who brought Hindu-ism to Bali—as one of the memo-rial sanctuaries for the sage MpuKuturan.

Mpu Kuturan was a great leaderand Hindu seer that came to Balicirca the 10th century AD. South ofthe Silayukti Temple lies TanjungSari Temple of which one of itsshrines is dedicated for the sancti-fication of Mpu Baradah (anotherHindu great seer coming from Javawhen he intended to meet his elderbrother, Mpu Kuturan).

BEIJING - China’s overseas in-vestment in non-financial sectorsnearly tripled in the third quarter fromthe same period last year, the govern-ment said Tuesday, as the Asian giantrebounded from the global crisis.

Investment in mining, manufac-turing and other non-financial sectorsreached 20.5 billion dollars from Julyto September, up 190.4 percent on-year, the commerce ministry said in astatement on its website.

That compared with a total of32.9 billion dollars pumped into over-seas non-financial sectors in the first

The plan to address systemic riskin the financial sector will wind downfailing institutions and end “too big tofail” bailouts that have been borne bytaxpayers, the Treasury and the HouseFinancial Services Committee said.

The proposed Financial StabilityImprovement Act “provides for theorderly wind-down of failing firmsand ends ‘too big to fail’ to ensure thatindustry and shareholders absorb therisks and costs of failure, not taxpay-ers,” they said in a statement.

The measure would be a corner-stone of President Barack Obama’scommitment to reform financial regu-lation and avert costly taxpayer bail-outs of banks and other financial firms.

“The Financial Services Com-mittee and the Obama administra-tion are committed to ensuring thatthe taxpayers are never again calledupon to take responsibility for WallStreet’s business decisions,” thebill’s sponsors said.

CHICAGO - Thousands of protesterschanted “the banks got bailed out, we got soldout” as they marched through the streets of Chi-cago on their way to a meeting of US bankersTuesday.

Carrying signs proclaiming “Hold Wall Streetaccountable” and “Foreclosures ruin communi-ties,” they demanded more help for those who havelost their jobs and their homes as they sang “heyhey, ho ho, those bailout bonuses have got to go.”

The Obama administration last week slashedexecutive salaries at firms rescued by taxpayerbailouts and the Federal Reserve also imposednew rules limiting compensation packages whichencourage excessive risk-taking.

Critics have complained at government in-terference in the free market and warned that thepay cuts may stifle innovation and see alreadystruggling firms lose top executive talent to com-petitors not subject to pay curbs.

But speaker after speaker here castigated thebankers who they accused of profiting from theirrole in bring about the financial crisis and creditcrunch which dragged the United States into thedeepest recession since the Great Depression.

WASHINGTON - Financial companies with more than 10 billion dollars in assets will have topay for rivals’ failures or rescues, under draft legislation released Tuesday by the US Treasuryand lawmakers.

In a letter to committee chairmanBarney Frank, Obama congratulatedthe panel for the progress made “indesigning a strong package of finan-cial reforms.”

The 253-page draft legislationwould create a federal resource fundto deal with failures or rescues thatwould recover expended funds thathad not been recouped, by imposingassessments on firms with more than100 billion dollars in assets.

The bill would set up an inter-agency council to monitor and over-see the stability of the financial sys-tem and address any related threats.

It would also provide the FederalReserve and other federal financialagencies greater authority to “regulatefor financial stability purposes” andquickly address potential problems.

Among its other provisions, thebill would subject thrift holding com-panies to Fed supervision and give theFederal Deposit Insurance Corpora-

tion, which insures bank deposits, theability to unwind a failing firm.

“Costs to resolve a failing firmwill be repaid first from the assets ofthe failed firm at the expense of share-holders and creditors, and to the ex-tent of any shortfall, from assessmentson all large financial firms,” the state-ment said.

“In this instance, we follow the‘polluter pays’ model where the finan-cial industry has to pay for their mis-takes — not taxpayers.”

Obama praised the panel for act-ing “quickly and in the face of sub-stantial opposition to bring strong pro-tections to consumers from unfair andfraudulent lending practices, to regu-late derivative markets and to requirebanks to change compensation prac-tices.”

But he admitted that more workwas needed “to build a more stablefinancial system and safeguard oureconomy from future crises.”

Burger called the heads of the major banksthe “architects of our economic collapse” andcalled on lawmakers to “investigate them and, ifnecessary... prosecute them for what they’ve doneto our country.”

The protesters lambasted the American Bank-ers Association and six top banks for spending 35million dollars fighting financial reforms afteraccepting 17.8 trillion dollars in taxpayer bailoutsand backstops.

“We demand accountability for the pain theBig Bankers have inflicted on families who facefinancial ruin, for joblessness, pensions wiped out, foreclosures and bankruptcy,” said RichardTrumka, president of the American Federation ofLabor and Congress of Industrial Organizations.

TESTIMONY is scheduled to resume Wednesday inthe hearing to determine whether Anna Nicole Smith’sdoctors and boyfriend should stand trial on charges theyillegally funneled drugs to the Playboy model. TestimonyTuesday focused on Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, who is chargedalong with psychiatrist Kristine Eroshevich and Smith’sboyfriend-lawyer Howard K. Stern.

All have pleaded not guilty. Smith died of an acciden-tal overdose of at least nine medications at a Florida hotelin February 2007. Pain management doctor James Gagnesaid Kapoor was feeding Smith’s addiction to prescrip-tion medications by excessively prescribing opiates, in-cluding methadone and Dilaudid, which is nicknamed“hospital heroin,” and sedatives known as benzodiazopines.

Gagne said Kapoor began treating Smith when hetook over the practice of another doctor in April 2004.Kapoor took up the same regimen as his predecessor, who was treating Smith for pain but felt she “had apredominantly psychiatric illness and was trying to keepa lid on it with methadone,” Gagne said.

When Smith fell and fractured two ribs, “Dr. Kapoorprescribed large amounts of Dilaudid, the strongestopiate available,” said Gagne. Smith had requestedDilaudid before and failed to get it, Gagne said. By the

Davis said Haggis’ complaintswere based on misunderstandingsand that he has since spoken to thefilmmaker. Davis strenuously dis-agreed with Haggis’ claim that theChurch of Scientology is in any wayanti-gay. Davis said the San Diegochapter of the Church ofScientology was incorrectly char-acterized as supportive of Prop 8.

“We’re all for civil rights and therights of minorities,” said Davis.“We know what it is to be a minor-ity and have your rights curtailed. We’re very vocal and consistent inour stance on discrimination againstanybody. We take it very seriously.”For an organization often shroudedin secrecy, the letter offered an un-usual window into a dialogue be-tween the church and one of its fa-mous members. Occasionally,Scientology materials are leaked.Last year, a promotional video star-ring its most famous member, TomCruise, was watched by millions.

Haggis also said he was “shocked”that the Church of Scientology waspublicly denying that it adheres to apolicy of disconnection — of sever-ing ties with a friend or family mem-ber who’s antagonistic towardScientology. Haggis said that his wife,Deborah Rennard, was given pre-cisely those orders and didn’t speakto her parents for more than a year.Davis again disagreed with Haggisand said the church doesn’t mandatedisconnection with anybody and thatit was an entirely “self-determineddecision.”

Michael Jackson has been called the “greatest performer of hisgeneration” by many and even the “greatest performer of all time”by some, albeit perhaps overzealous, music fans. Naturally, everyoneate up his words when he announced his final concert during a pressconference only a few months before his untimely death.

“This Is It” will only be screen-ing for two weeks, so the fan outpour-ing to get their hands on the ticketsis understandable. Considering thisis the last time (at least until “lost

“The fans meant everything toMichael,” Director and Choreogra-pher Kenny Ortega explained in aninterview about why the raw re-hearsal footage was being cut to-gether and released as a product thatdid not have the final polish of anactual Jackson show. “They were hisfood, his fuel, his life source, hisenergy, and he was energized bythem and he appreciated their loy-alty more than I can ever say. KATHMANDU – Tigers could become extinct in the wild in twodecades unless the world ramps up conservation efforts to halt the de-cline in their population, wildlife experts said on Wednesday. Barely3,500 tigers are estimated to be roaming in the wild in 12 Asian coun-tries and Russia compared with about 100,000 a century ago, expertsand conservationists said.

Tigers are being illegally killed for their body parts and Asia is ahotspot for the illegal wildlife trade which the international policeorganisation Interpol estimates may be worth more than $20 billion ayear. Skins sell as rugs and cloaks on the black market, where a skin canfetch up to $20,000 in countries like China.

Habitat destruction and depletion of prey base were other perils fac-ing the “Asian heritage”, conservationists said. “A business as usualapproach in tiger conservation will doom the tiger population in thenext 15 to 20 years,” Mahendra Shrestha, programme director of theWashington-based Save the Tiger Fund told Reuters on the sidelines ofa conference on tiger conservation.

He said law enforcement, patrols to stop poaching and the preserva-tion of remaining habitat would improve the situation. “There is hope.We can do it. It is not rocket science. It does not require a lot of newactivities,” Shrestha said. “But there has to be strong political will toconserve tigers and also strong global international support for the ac-tivities of the tiger range countries.”

Tigers still roam terrain in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China,India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Thailandand Vietnam. John Seidensticker, chief scientist at the Smithsonian Na-tional Zoo’s Conservation Ecology Center, said tiger habitat had de-clined by 40 percent in the last decade due to destruction of forests.

“Our challenge is to make landscapes with tigers alive worth morethan landscapes where tigers have been killed,” Seidensticker said. “Ithink we have a decade from where we will slip from being caretakersto undertakers.”

Production rose five percent to 56.6million barrels of oil equivalent, or615,000 barrels per day, during thereporting period.

However, analyst consensus fore-casts had been for an output increaseof 8.2 percent. The lower-than-ex-pected production gain was largelydue to a delay in the start-up of theHasdrubal facility in Tunisia, BG said.

Despite tumbling profits, BG ChiefExecutive Frank Chapman gave a con-fident outlook for the company, withhigher production levels expectedduring the fourth quarter. “These re-

sults demonstrate once again thestrength of BG Group’s integratedgas business and this, together withcurrent production levels around700,000 barrels per day, up 12 per-cent on the fourth quarter of 2008,provides us with confidence in theoutlook for the group’s perfor-mance,” Chapman said.

Surfing the Internet just might be a way to preserve your mental skills as you age. Researchers foundthat older adults who started browsing the Web experienced improved brain function after only a few days.“You can teach an old brain new technology tricks,” said Dr. Gary Small, a psychiatry professor at theSemel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at the University of California, Los Angeles, and theauthor of iBrain. With people who had little Internet experience, “we found that after just a week of prac-tice, there was a much greater extent of activity particularly in the areas of the brain that make decisions, the thinking brain — which makes sense because, when you’re searching online, you’re making a lot ofdecisions,” he said. “It’s interactive.”

“He’s a decent boy with great abil-ity but with Aaron Lennon playing sowell I think he couldn’t see any light atthe end of the tunnel. He got the op-portunity and took it with both hands. It will be very hard not to play him atthe Emirates,” the ex-West Ham bosssaid, referring to Saturday’s north Lon-don derby with Arsenal.

“It all depends on David Bentley. It’s up to him to keep performing likethat, whether he wants to stay or leave, but I want to keep him.” Former Ar-senal player Bentley was named theman-of-the-match but admitted when

I’ve encountered every prob-lem in the book and it’s just nice to getmy head down now and hopefully con-centrate on football,” he said. “I justlooked to enjoy myself and give 100per cent. Sometimes my efforts havebeen lacking at times because I haven’tbeen fully focused on football.”

The 15-million-pound man hadlooked threatening in the early stagesof Tuesday’s victory without an endproduct, and it was no surprise thatwhen he found his range Spurs took thelead. The Spanish giants, who last col-lected the title way back in 1993,were kicked out of Spain’s premiercup competition in 2008 by ThirdDivision side Real Union, a loss thattriggered the dismissal of coachBernd Schuster.

Real’s embarrassing defeat onTuesday came despite the presenceof Raul and Chilean coach ManuelPellegrini welcoming back injuredstrikers Karim Benzema and Ruudvan Nistelrooy but Portuguesewinger Cristiano Ronaldo and Ar-gentine forward Gonzalo Higuain, who also missed the club’s 0-0 draw

Mallya says Force India can bevery proud of its achievementsthis year, and is optimistic histeam can keep its momentum go-ing and be closer to the front in2010. “At the start of the year, wewanted points but I also wantedto show a genuine improvementin every area of the company,”said Mallya.

proach to the weekend.” Althoughthe Yas Marina circuit is new to ev-eryone, Button is sure that it willhelp deliver an exciting end to theseason.

“It’s always fun to try a new racetrack, particularly one which looksas unique as Yas Marina with theunusual pitlane exit and the day/night race,” he said. “I’m sure AbuDhabi is going to host an excitingweekend and a great finale to the2009 Formula 1 season.”

Force India has‘exceeded expectations’

“We have learned from the mis-takes of last season and have reallytightened up processes, proceduresand working practices, which hasultimately helped us to score pointsand be proud of our achievements.I would say this year has even ex-ceeded our expectations as we havesecured a podium, pole and fastestlap. We can be really proud of this.”

“All the same we have had op-portunities we haven’t been able tomake the most of, for exampleInterlagos, Suzuka and Monza. This slightly mutes the satisfaction, but it does give a lot of cause foroptimism - if we can get into a simi-lar position next year and followthrough all the chances we couldbe solid midfield in both champi-onships.”

Mallya is also hopeful his team

will have a strong final race of theseason in Abu Dhabi this weekend, where he is aiming to make up forthe disappointment of the Brazil-ian Grand Prix, where he reckonsAdrian Sutil could have finishedon the podium. “Brazil was amissed opportunity to score points.Adrian was in a prime position toget some decent points, perhapseven a podium, but it was not tobe,” Mallya added.

“But the Abu Dhabi aero con-figuration is roughly similar toBrazil and Valencia, and eventhough we can’t expect rain, wecan expect a reasonable level ofperformance in qualifying thatshould put us in a good positionfor the race. We could technicallymove up a position in the champi-onship as we’re just 13 points be-hind Renault, but it will be toughso we need to consolidate what wehave already.”

“Toro Rosso have been lookingvery strong in recent races so it’sa matter of personal pride to keepthem behind. Ninth place in thechampionship is one positionhigher than last year and we needthat improvement to validate allthe progress we’ve made thisyear.”
