Hello South West Membership, I wish to thank all the County Reps for arranging their county festivals and IST/Open Days and their hard work during 2018. I am sure all attendes have thoroughly enjoyed themselves meeting the tutors and old friends and hearing all the local yoga news. Next year’s South West Festival is being planned for July 2019 at Exeter University. If you would like to see any particular tutor there please contact Kate Smith, our Festival Organiser, at [email protected] . All Committee members’ new email addresses are on the contact list in each Yogascene as well as the website. If you want to raise any items please inform your County Rep so they can
raise it, or you are welcome to attend yourself. November’s AGM in Wiltshire is rapidly approaching - please come and join us as we have new committee members who joined us during 2018 and I would like our membership to thank them for supporting our region. We are also looking for anyone who would like to become helpers for your County Reps, by supporting them on events, in return for the possibility of a free place on the day. Please contact your County Rep or myself for more details. Finally, our South West Region has lost a dear friend, Mira Love, in July 2018. Mira was a tutor who always volunteered her services by giving yoga sessions, complementary therapies and

healing as a qualified therapist in Reflexology, Massage, Aromatherapy and as a Reiki Master. She will be sadly missed. With Love

Regional Treasurer’s report
Karen Ward
Hi everyone.
I’m standing in temporarily for John Parry who has now taken over as
BWY National Treasurer – and we all wish him well in his new role.
If anyone is interested in being Treasurer for the Region, please do let me
know.
It’s not time consuming as most of the income goes into Central Office,
and payments are made online. There’s no complicated accounting
involved, so if you have an interest in book keeping then we would love to
hear from you.
At the end of July there was £13,322 in the bank, slightly lower than the
£14,990 reported in April.
Just a final note on refunds. The BWY does have a refund policy so we
recommend you familiarise yourself with the policy so that you understand
the circumstances when refunds are made should you need to cancel your
booking at an IST day or event.
Take care,
Karen

Regional Training Officer’s
report
Christine Granville Dear Members, The BWY continually checks the quality and effectiveness of the training days it provides and there is now work in progress to change the way In Service Training Days (IST days) work. The plan is to offer high quality general yoga days which will be available to everyone, teachers and non-teachers. This could also include people from other schools of yoga. Although teachers will still need to provide evidence of their continuing professional development through a form on the website, the current points system will change. Could you get in touch with me at [email protected] with any suggestions, ideas, or even grumbles about the present system, which I can feed back to our National IST Officer. Hot news from the Yoga Festival in Cheddar, Somerset held on 1
September: it was a wonderfully friendly, relaxed, informative, and fun
day. Many thanks to Jo Webb for organising it. We also raised £30 for the
Karm Marg Delhi Children’s Centre by selling our yoga books.
Best Wishes,
Christine

Avon report
Lyndsey Mouland
Dear Avon members, Wow, what a summer! I hope you enjoyed all that warm weather. It certainly brought new meaning to the term ‘hot yoga’. As the summer draws to a close and autumn approaches it allows us time to reflect, check in with our intentions for the year and maybe set new ones. And with the nights drawing in, it also serves as a reminder that it is time to slow things down a bit. This can be applied to our yoga practice too. Why not sign up for a restorative yoga class or even book onto one of the many yoga retreats out there, setting aside time for yourself? On the subject of change, I wanted to let you know I will be standing down as the County Rep at the South West AGM in November, but I am very pleased to announce that we now have a Deputy for the region who will probably take over when I step down. Watch this space! Thank you you for all your support and I wish you well on your yoga journey. Namaste Lyndsey

Dear Gloucestershire Members I have taken over from Kate Plummer as the new Gloucestershire Representative for the BWY. As a 40th Birthday present to myself I have left behind my previous career in accountancy and payroll and am very much enjoying my new role as a student Yoga Teacher in Cheltenham. I am looking forward to our next IST day on the 14th October, the last one this year! Rajesh David is teaching Nada Yoga - The Yoga of Sound. The day has a variety of interesting topics included. Please don’t leave it too late to book. See page 19 for more details. I will be organising a First Aid IST day in the Spring and if you have any other requests for IST days next year please let me know. Thank you for reading. Best Wishes, Katy

Somerset report
Jo Webb
Hello to all Somerset Members, This is being written in July, when we have enjoyed a long spell of sunshine, by the time you read this we will be moving into Autumn, a time of transition. The vata dosha is most prevalent during Autumn. Vata governs movement in the body, as well as activating the nervous system and the processes of elimination. The qualities of vata are cold, dry, rough, light, changeable, irregular, and moving. Vata is composed of the elements of air and space. Because of vata’s association with the nervous system, its state is often reflected in our mental health. With the abundance of vata energy circulating at this time, our bodies and minds can become overwhelmed and out of balance, so you may feel unsettled, ungrounded and unstable. But while we cannot change the seasonal weather shifts, we can maintain internal balance by adjusting our lifestyles to counter the predominant vata energy in nature. We do this by incorporating yoga poses, food, and lifestyle choices that naturally hold the opposite qualities of the vata dosha. Ideally please book all events via the website, if you have problems you can pay by cheque but please remember to provide membership number, e-mail and phone number as well as the event you wish to book, because we no longer have access to this information. Namaste Jo

Cornwall report Kathryn Blackie-Taylor
Hello to all our Cornwall members,
I hope you are all very much invigorated by the fabulous summer we have
had.
I have recently moved into Cornwall from neighbouring Devon and have
taken on the role of County Rep. I have been a BWY teaching member
since 2001 and am looking forward to getting to know BWY members in
Cornwall and bringing some quality teaching and events to the county.
Sue will continue to be the Deputy Rep.
I have booked Wendy Teasdill to teach her new IST “The History Of Yoga
In Practice” on Sunday 4th November. This is dedicated to deepening our
awareness of the pedigree of the postures we do every day, backed up by
presentation and handouts, and finishing with a yoga nidra integrating
images of all that has been covered. Wendy is a wonderfully experienced
teacher whose teaching conveys the depth and experience of her practice
and learning.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at this IST day and
at future events being planned for 2019.
Namaste.

Devon report
Sonja Armstrong
Autumn Greetings to all Devon members, It has been a wonderfully warm summer and now as we move into the mellowness of autumn it can seem like a distant memory. The heat and dryness can however be a problem for people with breathing difficulties as it is often accompanied by air pollution. As a Buteyko practitioner I am looking forward to our training day ‘Freeing the Breath’ in October with Andrea Newman. Please refer to the information in this magazine and on our BWY website to book. Looking ahead to next year, the beautiful Lotus Loft is the venue for our first day in April. Space will be limited for this so please book early! Devon will see a lot more Yoga activity as we have a whole weekend our Festival at Exeter University in July 2019. For those of you that do not use computers you can book through me using the forms herein and remember that I am your first line of contact in the event of any queries, not Central Office. As always – BOOK EARLY PLEASE. I have been asked to arrange training days on a Sunday from time to time. It is proving difficult because of travel restrictions when tutors come a long way to teach, and many of them seem to prefer travelling by train. So, I haven’t forgotten and I will keep on trying. See you at an event soon!
With love in yoga,
Sonja

Dorset report
Michelle Christopher
‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness...’ To Autumn by John Keats Bright Blessings from Dorset. The feeling of autumn is upon us. The isle of Portland is brimming with blackberries, sloes, apples and the harvest from a very hot July. Days are getting shorter and we are beginning to spend a little more time indoors. I am looking forward to watching the leaves begin to change colour and to witness my first view of a dew-drop laden spider’s web. For me it is one of the beautiful visions that signifies autumn is well and truly upon us. June saw us enjoying a wonderfully uplifting and informative day from Rajesh David. His kind, calm and caring demeanor helped us all to relax and enjoy the day. It was an honour to learn from him about the subject of Bhakti yoga. The day contained a perfect mix of spiritual study, self awareness and practical ways to share this with our students. Rajesh is hoping to join us again in the autumn of 2019 to deliver another course on Nada yoga. Sharon and I are busy finalising the details of the Dorset Yoga Festival which will
be held on Sunday 4 November at Dorchester Yoga Centre. There will be lots of
different workshops to choose from, an extended lunch to allow time to meet with
colleagues and friends, and a choice of sound healing therapy using tuning forks,
or Reiki or other therapies to be confirmed. More details to follow via the BWY
website.
Lastly as we embrace the shorter days and longer nights life does tend to get busier towards the end of the year, so do be sure to spend some time using restorative postures to allow the mind, body and spirit to calm.
Om Shanti! Michelle and Sharon

Wiltshire report
Tina Bosley
Hello Everyone,
Take a big breath –the Autumn air is all around us......
Autumn is a transformation beyond just the season. The days become
shorter, the rhythm shifts, the light and heat of summer subside. We move
towards something more mellow and soft, which encourages us to look
within and reflect.
As you slow down, find the time to ponder an Ayurvedic approach to
autumn. Ayurveda is a sister science to yoga, it’s the traditional Indian
medical lifestyle system. The wisdom of Ayurveda is about finding a way
of life that flows with the changes of the seasons, weather, time and place.
Maybe you know your combination of the three doshas, vata, pitta or
kapha. And maybe you know what triggers you out of balance.
The breath becomes a key element of an autumn practice. What better
time to master the art of breathing than in autumn, when there is such high
prana in the atmosphere? You can feel the crisp, sharp, aliveness of the
prana when you breathe.
Clear a space in your day for a regular pranayama exercise, or start your
day with Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing), helping to purify the
channels of toxins, and especially vata-toxins that accumulate from
tension and constriction of the channels.
YogaScene – Edition 3, 2018 15
As you start to tune into your breath you begin a sort of landscape
maintenance, pruning branches that are no longer useful and letting your
leaves fall.
Our digestion is easily unsettled with the changing seasons. It agitates the
digestive fire. When our digestion is knocked out of balance, then harmful
toxins start to build. Meals should be cooked and ideally served warm,
including your breakfast. Focus on foods which are sweet, sour and salty
and reduce your intake of bitter, astringent and pungent tastes.
Asana practice could support the lungs/breath and intestines/digestion
with some slow sun salutations savouring the breath, twists to cleanse the
intestines, inversions and forward bends. A long Svanasana will help you
feel grounded and encourage a restful sleep.
Simply by tuning into the natural shifts and changes of the seasons like
this, we can adapt our yoga practices to keep us in balance. When we
balance our lifestyle and practice we acquire the capacity to slow down,
take on a little less and savour those autumn colours.
If you are interested in Ayurveda, why not join us for our next IST day in
the lovely village of Holt - Ayurvedic Diet and Lifestyle with Tarik Dervish
on 20 October?
On 17 November we have our Regional AGM, also in Holt Village Hall.
With Very Best Wishes, Tina.

Bringing Patanjali to the Mat: Wendy Teasdill
Wendy has been practising yoga for over thirty years and is a DCT and a BWY Modules tutor, currently serving on the education committee as Modules Officer. She has spent many years in Asia and has written two books: Walking to the Mountain, about a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, and Yoga for Pregnancy. Some background reading on Patanjali before the day would be an advantage but not absolutely essential. It would be good to bring a copy so translations can be compared. Handouts include the sequence of postures practised along with the reminder of the sutras we considered.. Iyengar, though famous for his `alignment, is a serious follower of the sutras of Patanjali. All the asana practice of Iyengar is based on the philosophy of Patanjali. While in no way pretending to propagate the Iyengar method of teaching asana, Wendy takes the essential philosophy and applies it to the deeper interpretation of asana through Pratakshya direct experience. We are situated in a beautiful hall with a wooden floor, you may need to bring additional padding for your knees. Bring and share lunch, refreshments available - small donation appreciated. IST Ref 18/61 Bones for Life - Walk for Life: Marye Wyvill
Aims of the Morning: To introduce the background
and methodology of Ruthy Alon's "Bones for Life"
programme, which incorporates "Walk for Life", to
demonstrate how distribution of pressure in the foot
affects posture, balance, and mobility, to restore
springiness and flexible articulation to the knees,
and to expand freedom of movement and flexibility
in the hip joint while securing a reliable,
uncompromised alignment of posture.
Aims of the Afternoon: To address problems of over-
flexibility and over-rigidity in the lumbar, to improve
comfort and efficiency in walking by fostering
harmonious co-ordination between all body parts,
and to enhance the pleasure of moving, thereby
strengthening the bones.
Participants will learn practices to align the lumbar
and avoid the compulsive and uncontrolled
exaggeration of a compressed in-curve, and will
work towards encouraging the upper body to
correspond in more harmony and precision to the
lower body whilst walking.

IST 18/54 Ayurvedic Diet and Lifestyle: Tarik Dervish
Tarik has been teaching Yoga for 20 years and Ayurveda for 10 years. He is a DCT BWY Diploma holder and also holds an honours degree in Ayurveda. He specialises in building bridges between the two practices to help improve health and wellbeing and create the foundations for a deeper relationship with Self. He also runs an Ayurvedic clinic in Central London. He runs Foundation courses, Teacher Training courses and a BWY Module in Ayurveda..
This workshop is suitable for all levels. There will be a basic introduction on Ayurveda and the emphasis will quickly move to the recommendations related to Diet and Lifestyle. Ayurveda generally recommends balance in all things but what might bring balance to one may cause imbalance for another. Lifestyle and Food are a very tricky business and ultimately, it is important to build a very personal relationship with what you eat and do. This workshop aims to ultimately raise your awareness of what you do and whether it is working for you or not. Our hall has a lovely wooden floor, please ensure you bring sufficient padding for your knees. 'Bring and Share' lunch (if you choose). Refreshments provided (donations gratefully accepted). Freeing the Breath: Andrea Newman
Andrea is a BWY teacher and DCT living in Bristol. She is also a Rolfing practitioner having qualified in 2008.
During this workshop we will explore what is meant by the notion of 'good breathing' and we will explore how we might make choices about how to breathe during asana practice and the impact of these. We will consider how we can use asana to release the blocks to free breathing. Maintaining lung capacity and developing adaptability of breath are important for our general health and wellbeing and we will explore useful breathing practices to that end. Use of breath work for stress management will also be covered. The day will include practical asana work as well as discussion and sensitive pair work. You will assess your own breathing patterns in terms of depth, speed, sound, rhythm, activity and passivity; and how these aspects change during and after practice. We will take an in depth look at the anatomy of breathing and consider how this is affected by our individual body structure and posture, the emotions and stress levels. We will consider the role and purpose of pranayama as part of a yoga practice. (Please note that there will not be a pranayama practice included) For more information and booking, visit:

Healing Mantra - developing a personal practice, Sarena Mason Drawing on the Hindu, Buddhist and Tibetan traditions you will explore mantras that heal, support your personal and spiritual development and offer protection. You will also learn a moving meditation from the Bon Po period that opens our inner listening, enhances intuition, and is protective. Periods of silence will allow the sound to settle and deepen our inner stillness. Whether you are new to healing chant or experienced – all are welcome as we approach this with a beginner’s mind. No ‘singing’ ability required (we don’t sing!). About Sarena Mason In 1998 the newly published book "The Mozart Effect” by Don Campbell opened Sarena’s eyes to the healing power of music and sound. She studied with Pat Moffitt Cook at The Open Ear Center in the USA exploring the therapeutic use of cross-cultural music and sound. She was particularly drawn to chant and mantra and in the last 3 years begun Vedic healing chant training, which takes place in Belgium. Yoga for Special People - teaching yoga to less abled individuals, Richard Kravetz
This training will help practitioners gain an understanding of how to approach teaching Yoga to less abled individuals. It will provide students with the tools to demonstrate how to make yoga’s therapeutic benefits accessible to adults with a variety of specific needs.
The day will include guidance on assisting the elderly towards maintaining a degree of exercise and movement and helping to slow down deterioration in older age.
You will become increasingly confident in making a difference to the lives of those who experience difficulty taking part in traditional yoga classes and learn how anti-rheumatic methods help release tension in the limbs and relax muscular tension in the joints.
You will learn how to structure and plan a Yoga session for adults with learning difficulties or access requirements, and how these can be integrated into a class situation or one to one. You will observe how props can enhance the quality of the physical practice and how pranayama and chanting techniques can be introduced effectively and the benefits of these methods.
The objectives of this training are to provide a solid foundation for participants to approach a yoga class with those with additional needs, and the right guidelines and practices to improve their teaching. For more information and booking, visit:

The 5 koshas - a Dru Yoga masterclass in
Somerset: Padma McIntyre
This Dru Yoga masterclass for yoga teachers follows Padma's highly successful and enjoyable EBR8 masterclass in March 2018. In the ancient science of yoga the philosophers and scientists came to know that the gross and subtle bodies are just layers surrounding our real nature. Making a change in any of these layers will have an effect on the other layers, just as ripples flow out across a pool. During the masterclass we will explore many well-known and well-loved postures. Performed with a heightened awareness of the koshas they take on a whole new depth. During the workshop we will work with some practical exercises to apply our understanding of the kosha model - the five layers of human experience - to enhance and deepen our own and our students' experience. This masterclass is open to Dru Yoga teachers and BWY teachers. For more information and booking, visit: https://www.bwy.org.uk/southwest/event/656/

Yoga Day with Bill Wood 23rd March 2019 Cost: £60
Bill teaches in a way that encourages us to discover a more natural and easeful way
of working with our bodies. A way of unwinding more fully and freely into yoga
practices using less strain or force.
Working with Meditative Yoga Practices with Dave Charlton 27th April 2019 Cost: £60
Using the guidance found in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali Chapter 3 vers- es 1 to 8 we will explore the yogic definition of ‘mind’ and look at the three
inner limbs - dharana, dhyana and samadi. In this workshop we will explore
practical meditative yoga practices, including asana and pranayama, within
the framework suggested by TKV Desikachar.
Intuitive Alignment in Yoga with Lisa Peterson 18th and 19th May 2019 Cost: £140
This workshop will explore our relationship to our inner energetic centre
and how to integrate our spine, our limbs and ourselves to this central hub.
We will examine what happens when we learn to establish a strong yet
mobile core, and how the breath is the key to creating this. During the work- shop, we will explore the art of vinyasa as a moving meditation, asana and
posture work, breathwork, somatic or guided self-enquiry, intero-reception
(our awareness of subtle, body based feelings or the ‘body-fulness’ of our
experience), and restorative Yoga.
Further Dates for your Diary 29th June 2019 - Yoga in the Tradition of TKV Desikachar with Ranju Roy. 19th October
