Winner Siena Constructing the Renaissance City

Fabrizio Nevola Yale University Press/Code 62205/November 2007/Hardback/320 pages/£40.00Siena, one of the major artistic centres of medieval and Renaissance Italy, is renowned for its striking architecture and its beauty as a city. This book is the first to focus on Sienese architectural and urban history during the 15th and early 16th centuries. Fabrizio Nevola offers a comprehensive picture of the city, describing in detail how the layout and appearance of Siena changed between 1400 and 1520, as political and social events triggered a variety of initiatives that transformed the city’s urban core.

Sir Nikolaus Pevsner International Book Award for Architecture

Judges’ comments:Renaissance Siena has not been much written about by historians, and Nevola’s book, which is based on a lot of new research, is the first comprehensive architectural-urban history of the city. This isn’t just an architectural history, it looks at the city as a whole, and draws upon all kinds of sources, to show us the city as the product of a relationship between ideal and image, and between representation and reality.

Winner Carlos Ferrater Office of Architecture in Barcelona

Manel Padura Manel Padura/May 2007 Code 60014/Hardback/494 pages/£55.00This monumentally informative and elegant tome features a conversation with Ferrater before documenting his entire career, from 1971 student intervention Instant City, a hippie dream of colourful inflatables, to current drawing board work such as Casa AA, an orthogonal network based on 45 degree angles. This is a total of 63 projects, described in superb detail with plenty of images and plans. Ranging in scale from a downhome guest pavilion on Menorca to town halls, housing estates and the new Barcelona airport, this is the definitive guide to a significant architect.

The RIBA International Book Award for Architectural Practice

Judges’ comments:The book of our choice stands out and demands to be picked up, opened and read. The graphic style, layout, quality of imagery, photography and overall design is consistently high. It is very clear in wanting to communicate the office’s core values, the essence of the work and the consistent themes throughout the years. It is undoubtedly a production of high quality and physiognomic supremacy. If any book succeeds in being representational of the output of the office it stands for, then this is definitely the book.

Simon Henley Thames & Hudson/Code 62613/ August 2007/256 pages/Hardback/£24.95

This is the first comprehensive international survey of one of the most neglected but most important building types of the modern era: the parking garage. An introduction sets out the history and architectural significance of these buildings and their relevance today, and is followed by four main chapters that define the most influential aspects of parking design: elevations and facade; construction and materiality; the use of light; and experimentation.

Sir Robert McAlpine International Book Award for Construction

WinnerMoving Rooms The Trade in Architectural Salvages

John Harris Yale University Press/August 2007 Code 62011/Hardback/240 pages £30.00This fascinating book documents the break-up, sale and re-use of salvages in Britain and America, where the fashion for so-called ‘Period Rooms’ became a mainstay of the transatlantic trade. Much appreciated by museum visitors, period rooms have become something of a scholarly embarrassment, as research reveals that many were assembled from a variety of sources.

The RIBA International Book Award for Interior Design

Judges’ comments:The Architecture of Parking is a fantastically stimulating fresh look at an architectural topic. This book won the The Sir Robert McAlpine International Book Award for Construction 2008 because it made an immediate impact on all the judges. It is about a specialist subject and deals with it in a wonderfully readable way without any patronising of non expert readers.

Max Fordham Jury Chairman and Environmental Engineer

Judges’ comments:A major work that is both unique and original. It’s arguments are well presented, logical and effective. It will attract a wide audience of designers and design historians and will become an important and long standing reference work. While handsome in presentation and design it is not a coffee table design book – but it’s subject matter, depth and innovation were the deciding factors. Modern professional interior design requires a broad range of skills – Moving Rooms is a valuable addition to that knowledge base

Mecanoo Architects Master Architect Series

Images Publishing/June 2008 Code 57517/Hardback/256 pages/£35.00Netherlands-based architectural firm Mecanoo has produced many outstanding projects during its 20 years of existence. According to principal Francine Houben, ‘Architecture is a combination of various elements, like town and landscape planning and interior design. Mecanoo’s work is characterised by the integration of these disciplines’. In Mecanoo’s designs, the technical, human and playful aspects are interwoven into one solution. With more than 300 projects to its name, and in excess of 100 built projects, Mecanoo is a highly successful European firm. This comprehensive monograph examines a substantial number of the firm’s early and recent projects, both built and unbuilt.

Architecture of the Cape Cod Summer The Work of Polhemus Savery DaSilva

Michael J. Crosbie with Foreword by Cesar Pelli Images Publishing/June 2008 Code 65268/Hardback/264 pages/£40.00In the twelve years since Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects Builders was formed, the firm has created a significant body of wooden buildings that are rooted in the seaside vernacular of the fabled region of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. As a design/build firm led by architects, the firm is able to reach a level of aesthetic control not normally associated with light construction today. The book features over twenty houses and a handful of small institutional buildings in photographs by some of the world’s best architectural photographers and drawings by the firm. Introduction and text by Michael J. Crosbie, with forewords by Cesar Pelli and Robert Venturi, and an essay by John R. DaSilva.

Glenn Murcutt, ArchitectGlenn Murcutt, Kenneth Frampton 01 Editions/March 2007 Code 64450/Cased/£830.00This special limited edition monograph on the work of architect Glenn Murcutt provides a rare insight into the practice and working process of Australia’s most eminent, Pritzker Prize-winning architect. In the tradition of the folio, this large format publication gives architects, academics, scholars and lovers of architecture worldwide a richly-detailed archival quality resource. Housed within a solander box are nine ‘volumes’. A fully illustrated book by eminent critic Kenneth Frampton is followed by eight individual folders, featuring eight projects nominated by Murcutt as defining milestones in his artistic and professional development. Each folder contains a photographic essay and loose-leaf sketches, plans and actual size drawings.

Folders are cross-referenced to the keynote essay so that simultaneous readings of text, plans, photographs and drawings can be made. The format allows the full-size reproduction of over seventy of Murcutt’s densely-notated, hand-rendered drawings and sketches, including concepts as well as built works. All papers and materials are of the highest archival quality. The folio provides a robust and permanent documentation of the work of this exceptional architect. Because of its expense and exclusivity the title is ‘to order’ only, and will take up to six weeks for delivery. A small number of copies will also be signed by the architect.

Space and LearningHerman Hertzberger 010 Publishers/June 2008 Code 63754/Hardback/208 pages/Paperback/£29.50Schools loom large in the comprehensive body of work designed by Herman Hertzberger; more than 30 have been built to date. School-building, according to Hertzberger, is one of the few areas in architecture today where designers are still able to define and influence human conditions. In his opinion, school buildings require striking a balance between use, performance and an architecture informed by education. School buildings need re-inventing on each new occasion, particularly given current developments in education which are shifting away from the traditional approach to one more targeted at the individual. This clearly necessitates a trade-off between education, educational systems and architecture. Space and Learning brings together Hertzberger’s knowledge and ideas in a theoretical study of the spatial conditions of learning. Lavishly illustrated throughout with the architect’s own work and that of others.

Single-Family HousingAntonio Gimenez, Conchi Monzonis Editorial Pencil/May 2008 Code 63253/Hardback/340 pages/£59.00This high quality technical publication presents a hand-picked selection of houses from all around the world, the common feature being that they are single-family houses rather than terraced or apartment housing. The book covers a wide range of formal, structural and constructive approaches to this popular form of housing.

Projects are documented with loving care and close attention to detail, with descriptions of the initial brief, challenges arising there from and the construction process. There are plenty of excellent photographs and a wide range of plans – floorplans, elevations, sections, constructive sections and constructive details. This detailed and heavyweight study is essential for those involved in the delivery of single-family housing.

Stadien/Stadiums Market Places of the FutureAlbert Wimmer Springer Wien New York/June 2008 Code 64539/Paperback/156 Pages/£21.00The work of Albert Wimmer is characterised by his incessant drive to find ideal answers to the constantly changing demands on architecture. His projects in stadium architecture set international standards. His winning entry for the construction of the new Tivoli Stadium in Innsbruck was the foundation for his work in stadium construction. The stadiums in Salzburg, Klagenfurt and Nicosia followed. Albert Wimmer is therefore responsible for three of the four Austrian stadiums for the EURO 2008 tournament. Striking architectural design elements characterise the impressive appearance of his stadiums. The underlying functional, economical and social framework conditions pose a new challenge for architecture: the connection between functionalism and experience. Contributions written by internationally respected social and cultural scientists and by architecture theoreticians discuss the social, economical and cultural development of football today.

Protoarchitecture Analogue and Digital Hybrids

Robert Sheil Wiley/July 2008 Code 64437/Hardback/136 pages/£22.99In the last decade, the interface of CAD and CAM has opened up a whole new range of possibilities for architects. Structures, prototypes, and 3D objects can now be crafted, assembled and installed as a direct consequence of digital drawings and the information/instructions embedded within them. Protoarchitecture explores the innovative work being done when moving from the world of analogue to digital, which is now responsible for invigorating new and worn tools, and redefining the scope and expertise of those who use them. Including the work of an international group of designers, this exciting book gives a spectacular look at what can be imagined and built today.

8 Construction and architectural practice

Architects’ Sketches Dialogue and Design

Kendra Schank Smith Architectural Press/June 2008 Code 65083/Hardback/152 pages/£34.99This book compares qualities of sketches to reveal unique approaches to the instruments of thinking in which all architects engage. It provides new insight into the relationship between architectural sketches and the process of creative manipulation. Sketches comprise a thinking mechanism, and through the qualities of ambiguity, quickness and change, they initiate a dialogue for architects. As a medium to facilitate communication, recording, discovery and evaluation, their pertinence lies in their ability to exhibit both the precise and the imprecise. Exploring four related theoretical approaches, play, memory-imagination-fantasy, caricature and the grotesque, the book shows how imprecision stimulates imagination to conceive new forms in the dialogue of architectural sketches.

Dictionary of Architecture and Building Construction

Nikolas Davies, Erkki Jokiniemi Architectural Press/June 2008 Code 63945/Hardback/736 pages/£34.99With more than 20,000 words and terms individually defined, the Dictionary offers huge coverage for anyone studying or working in architecture, construction or any of the built environment fields.

The innovative and detailed cross-referencing system allows readers to track down elusive definitions from general subject headings. Starting from only the vaguest idea of the word required, a reader can quickly track down precisely the term they are looking for.

The book is illustrated with stunning drawings that provide a visual as well as a textual definition of both key concepts and subtle differences in meaning. This book sets a new standard for reference books for all those interested in the buildings that surround us.

CDM 2007 Questions & Answers

Pat Perry Butterworth-Heinemann/March 2008 Code 65243/Paperback/512 pages/£29.99This title is a pragmatic, common-sense approach to interpreting the many queries which will inevitably arise from the new Regulations, no matter how simplified they purport to be. The author details practical solutions to a wide range of legal compliance issues and explores answers which go beyond the rather limited information contained in the Approved Code of Practice which supports the Regulations. The various duty holders, project stages and safety issues are dealt with in different chapters and the book can be used for detailed reference or for a quick refresher on specific subjects.

Examples and case studies are included together with a range of templates, checklists, forms and tables.

11 Green Architecture

The Enemies of Progress The Dangers of SustainabilityAustin Williams Imprint Academic/June 2008 Code 65034/Paperback/96 pages/£8.95

This polemical book examines the concept of sustainability and presents a critical exploration of its influence on society. The author’s core contention is that ‘sustainability’, manifested in several guises, represents a pernicious and corrosive doctrine that has survived primarily because there seems to be no alternative to its canon: in effect, he argues, its bi-partisan appeal has depressed critical engagement and neutered politics.

Sustainable Construction Sandy Halliday Butterworth-Heinemann/January 2008 Code 37588/395 pages/Paperback/£29.99Sustainability occurs when a society can meet the needs of people today without compromising its ability to meet the needs of tomorrow. In a sustainable society economic, social and environmental concerns are adequately addressed, in a way that does not ignore the interconnected, systemic and global nature of these concerns. For building and construction, this means delivering buildings and communities with lower environmental impacts while enhancing health, productivity, community and quality of life. This suggests that sustainability is not limited to impacts on the natural environment, but on people and the community.

This groundbreaking book will help all building design and cost professionals to understand sustainable design and will provide the technical skills needed to implement the most up-to-date concepts. Based on a hugely successful series of workshops for professionals in construction, the book takes best practice in each area and sets out how to apply the lessons learnt to your project. From the basics of materials selection through building services and ventilation strategies to guidance on post-occupancy evaluation and benchmarking performance, Sustainable Construction is a master-class in practical, sustainable design encompassing cost, environmental and social issues. It features best practice solutions, case studies and practical advice on implementation of sustainable construction techniques. It is prepared by industry experts for their peers.

Sustainable Design The Science of Sustainability and Green EngineeringDaniel Vallero, Chris Brasier Wiley/April 2008 Code 65336/Hardback/332 pages/£42.50

From thermodynamics to fluid dynamics to computational chemistry, this book sets forth the scientific principles underlying the need for sustainable design, explaining not just the ‘hows’ of sustainable design and green engineering, but also the ‘whys’. Moreover, it provides readers with the scientific principles needed to guide their own sustainable design decisions. Throughout the book, the authors draw from their experience in architecture, civil engineering, environmental engineering, planning and public policy in order to build an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of sustainable design.

Using Natural Finishes Lime & earth-based plasters, renders & paints

Katy Bryce, Adam Weismann Green Books/June 2008 Code 64733/Paperback/264 pages/£20.00‘This highly informative and sumptuous book shows how the threat of climate change is also an opportunity to make buildings more beautiful’ Sunand Prasad, RIBA President

With the increasing awareness of eco-building techniques alongside the desire to make our homes healthier, the historical benefits of using natural renders and paints are being rediscovered. Using Natural Finishes is an in-depth guide to the selection, mixing and application of lime and clay based plasters, paints and washes and it provides step-by-step instruction showing the practical elements of working with these finishes

Energy Manual Sustainable ArchitectureMatthias Fuchs, Thomas Stark, Martin Zeumer Birkhäuser/July 2008 Code 66182/Hardback/280 pages/£84.50

While the efficiency and sustainability offensive is in full swing in most sectors of the economy, in the construction sector it is still in its very beginnings – economically as well as ecologically. However, politicians and policymakers at the global, European, and national levels have begun to address this deficit and are seeking to correct it with legal requirements and laws like EnEV, building certifications and competitions.

Following the proven model of earlier manuals in the series, the Energy Manual presents a comprehensive look at the constructional parameters of energy efficiency and sustainability. It offers an advance look at the legal regulations being planned by the EU, and – as a tool ready for immediate use by architects, engineers and designers in their daily work – it points the way toward the efficient and sustainable construction and operation of buildings.

With its focus on the entire lifecycle of a building, it provides an integrated perspective – a necessary prerequisite for sustainable economic management.

The Edge FuturesCharlie Leadbetter, Katherine Hamnett, Jonathon Porrit, William J. Mitchell, Geoff Mulligan, Allyson Pollock Black Dog Publishing/June 2008 Code 62217/Paperback/480 pages/£39.95

In this series of important and timely books, The Edge Group explore the impact the expected global warming related climate changes will have on our lives in the future. The series comes as a box set of six books:

Education and Creativity studies the future of the knowledge and creative economies in our changing world.

Transports and Networks is a thorough examination of the future of travel, both in terms of personal mobility and commerce.

Working explores how climate change will affect the way we work and live.

Living and Community investigates shifts in the social fabric of our communities that will be necessitated by environmental change. The current period of conspicuous consumption will come to an end, requiring more locally-sufficient and resource-careful lifestyles.

Globalism and Regionalism considers the impact that dwindling resources and restricted travel will have on global competitiveness and regional identity.

Health and Leisure contemplates the influence that our current lifestyle choices will have on our future health and well-being.

Guide to IC05Sarah Lupton RIBA Publishing/June 2008 Code 61860/Paperback/156 pages/£34.95Guide to IC05, the new edition of Sarah Lupton’s very successful Guide to IFC98, is a practical guide to the operation and administration of the JCT Intermediate Building Contract 2005. As well as covering the recent amendment to take account of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007, it points out the important new changes to the contract compared to the old 1998 version and reflects on up-to-date legal cases which serve as valuable lessons for the unwary. The contract’s provisions, procedures and supplementary conditions are organised and defined by subject and are supported by useful indexes, while clause comparison tables allow a quick and easy way to understand how it relates to the old contract. Altogether, the guide provides the hard-pressed practitioner with a comprehensive, concise reference guide to contractual issues during the course of a job under the contract. It assumes only a general knowledge of JCT contracts and in that respect is not only ideal for architects but also ideal for architecture and other construction students on the threshold of undertaking their professional examinations.

Dispute Avoidance A non-confrontational approach to the management of construction contracts

D. Bryan Morgan RIBA Publishing/July 2008 Code 64212/ Paperback/160 pages/£30.00Dispute Avoidance is a practical management primer for construction professionals based on over forty years’ hard-won commercial construction contract experience around the world.

It argues that running complex, high value construction projects is very demanding even when things go smoothly. Disputes are therefore very unwelcome and without due attention can be exponentially damaging. It pays both to minimise the chances of them occurring in the first place and, if that doesn’t work, to entrain strategies to manage them effectively once they exist.

A brilliant analysis identifies the types, causes and anatomy of disputes before offering a toolkit of simple management techniques to avoid costly ADR, arbitration or litigation procedures. This toolkit ranges from technical advice about the importance of knowing your contract and keeping good records through to the ‘softer’ skills of active listening, body language and managing expectations. The book concludes by looking at what to do once a dispute exists, describing a range of techniques from dispute mapping and analytical problem-solving through to framing, negotiation and de-escalation.

Equally relevant to architects, contractors, surveyors, developers and anyone versed in basic contract administration skills, the advice is timeless and universal. Seasoned professionals will discover a framework for thinking about disputes in a new way, while students and recent graduates will benefit by learning tried-and-tested business techniques at the start of their careers.

Plan of Work: Multi-Disciplinary Services

Roland Phillips RIBA Publishing/July 2008 Code 61856/Paperback/112 pages/£40.00Plan of Work: Multi-disciplinary Services is the new edition of the guide to the RIBA Outline Plan of Work 2007, the de facto standard project framework used by the construction industry. Now updated to reflect current procurement practice and the consequences of better risk management, this guide describes how the different parties in the contemporary multi-disciplinary team can work together effectively to complete work stages.

It considers the Client’s role and identifies the parties to the multi-disciplinary team as the Lead Consultant, CDM Co-ordinator, Cost Consultant, Design Leader, Architect, Structural Engineer and Services Engineer. Set out in a series of easy-to-use tables, the multi-disciplinary team’s typical responsibilities and tasks are outlined in Part 1 along the standard or Model procurement route. Similar tables outline variant activity schedules for design and build contracts for, in Part 2, the client’s team preparing Employer’s Requirements and, in Part 3, the contractors’ designers preparing Contractor’s Proposals. Part 4 includes simple but nonetheless vitally important new schedules for initial occupation services and post-occupation evaluation – work stages L2 and L3.

In effect, these tables comprise a comprehensive set of services schedules which may be used safely to define each consultant’s responsibilities in their respective appointment documents and ensure that no activity responsibility is overlooked.

Buildings that Feel GoodZiona Strelitz RIBA Publishing/June 2008 Code 64211/Hardback/160 pages/£25.00What makes a building good? This central challenge facing architects and clients can only be answered by looking at what works well for those who know the buildings most intimately – the building’s users.

Richly illustrated in colour, this refreshingly original book is packed with case studies of recent buildings that feel good. This ineffable quality is architecture’s Holy Grail. It is rooted in the physical but mediated by human experience, and may only be judged after the building has been ‘lived in’ and stood the test of time. The trick is to identify the relevant characteristics that will inform new buildings before they are built.

Written by a highly respected briefing and design evaluation expert who specialises in optimising the experience of building users, Buildings that Feel Good distils a set of hard-won lessons synthesised from years of empirical research. It argues that a powerful key to designing good buildings is to decipher consistent principles from users’ positive experience of existing buildings. The case studies include many recent highly-rated projects that cover a wide range of building types – offices, retail, industrial, infrastructure, sport and education. The lessons extracted are universal and provide valuable generic insights into the critically important briefing process.

Eclectic, thought-provoking and distinctive in articulating propositions for successful design, Buildings that Feel Good offers a design action agenda aimed at clients, architects, engineers, interior designers, construction professionals, students and indeed anyone interested in the nature of spaces that are both effective and cherished.

Modern Architect The Life and Times of Robert Matthew

Miles Glendinning RIBA Publishing/October 2008 Code 61865/Hardback/592 pages/£49.99This full-blooded biography of Sir Robert Matthew (1906–1975), one of the dominant figures in twentieth-century British architecture, interweaves his personal story with the turbulent political and social cross-currents of the welfare-state-era. A strong-willed, idealistic leader, Matthew exploited the great narratives of the day – public collectivism and private individualism, modernity and tradition – to help chart a wider strategy for architecture in Britain and abroad.

Always above all an ‘organisation architect’, Matthew’s prodigious work ethic and wide-ranging interests won him high-profile roles in local and national government, university education, international architectural politics, and socially-orientated private practice. The undisputed leader of post-war architecture in his native Scotland, Matthew was knighted in 1962, and became simultaneously President of the RIBA and the International Union of Architects, as well as founder-President of the Commonwealth Association of Architects.

Miles Glendinning’s Modern Architect: the Life and Times of Robert Matthew is a monumental achievement of historical scholarship that not only synthesises the disparate threads of Matthew’s own life but also sets out a comprehensively nuanced, balanced picture of the broad context of post-war modern architecture in Britain.

Changing Hospital ArchitectureEdited by Sunand Prasad RIBA Publishing/April 2008 Code 55094/Paperback/280 pages/£45.00Richly illustrated in full colour, Changing Hospital Architecture shows what can be achieved by reflecting on the UK’s current huge hospital building programme in the light of historical and international experience. Aimed at health policy makers, architects and other construction professionals in the health sector, it points to potential exemplars, presents key issues and occasionally signals caution.

A wide-ranging international survey of case studies is drawn from countries with healthcare practices of direct relevance to the UK. Written by distinguished experts in the field and edited by the RIBA President Sunand Prasad, Changing Hospital Architecture is a timely and important work set to galvanise the debate about design quality in our health buildings.

Spaced Out Crash Pads, Hippie Communes, Infinity Machines and Other Radical Environments of the Psychedelic SixtiesAlastair Gordon Rizzoli International/May 2008/ Code 64838/Hardback/304 pages/£35.00

The utopian 60s inspired revolutionary and alternative ways to live, love and entertain – and equally radical spaces to do it in. Stimulated by the psychedelic drug culture, rebel designers and architects distorted space to create womblike coves and isolation chambers, forging a spatial vocabulary that still reverberates today. At the same time, the tune-in-turn-on-drop-out message lured youths into far-flung communes, often under the roofs of brightly painted geodesic domes. Idealistic and anarchic enclaves with names like Drop City and Morning Star redefined the concept of community, inventing a wildly spontaneous way of building and dwelling.

For the first time, these ephemeral spaces are brought together in Spaced Out. The many never-before-published photographs and an inventive text by acclaimed author Alastair Gordon show in detail the spirit and ideas of this radical period.

Preservation of Modern Architecture

Theodore H. M. Prudon Wiley/May 2008 Code 66183/Hardback/592 pages/£52.50An architect’s guide to the preservation of modern architecture filled with illustrative case studies.

Modern architecture, built from approximately the 1920s to the 1970s, defined the twentieth century. Now, as works of modern architecture face a fate ranging from deterioration to functional obsolescence, the unique challenges of saving these buildings are evolving preservation practice. How does one preserve the design intent and character of a modern building while using new materials and advanced technologies not available when the building was constructed? Author Theodore Prudon answers that question in this comprehensive professional reference for architects and preservation professionals on the preservation of twentieth-century modern architecture. Revolving Architecture

A History of Buildings that Rotate, Swivel, and PivotChad Randl Birkhäuser/July 2008 Code 65163/Hardback/208 pages/£25.00

Alternately lauded as the future of architecture or dismissed as pure folly, revolving buildings are a fascinating missing chapter in architectural history with surprising relevance to issues in contemporary architectural design.

The follow-up to his critically acclaimed book A-frame, Chad Randl’s new title explores the history of this unique building type, investigating the cultural forces that have driven people to design and inhabit them. Revolving Architecture is packed with a variety of fantastic revolving structures such as a jail that kept inmates under a warden’s constant surveillance, glamorous revolving restaurants, tuberculosis treatment wards, houses, theatres and even a contemporary residential building whose full-floor apartments circle independently of each other. International examples from the late 1800s through to the present demonstrate the variety and innovation of these dynamic structures.

Book reviewPiet Boon: Beach

Piet Boon, Joyce Huisman Terra Uitgeverij/January 2008 Code 64740/Hardback/120 pages/£35.00 Piet Boon: Beach is the third book looking at the work of the increasingly celebrated Dutch Builder turned architect and interior Designer. He is renowned for his attention to detail and the “contemporary timeless” style visible throughout his work. This book looks at two very contrasting seaside projects, a topic which has seen a great deal of books published in the last few years. Depending on how you pick the book up (it’s worth a good look before opening it up as it is exquisitely produced), the first is a family’s second home in Zeeland complete with Tennis court and ample parking for Range Rovers, and the second, Piet Boon’s own idyllic private residence off the coast of Venezuela inspired by tradition and naturally ventilated in its entirety.

With very little text in the book, an understanding of the two projects featured depends on the beautiful photographs and their presentation, and quite frankly they are exemplary; beautifully conceived and composed page after page. You can be sure that clients who get hold of this book will quickly realise what it is they are looking to achieve. Ultimately, Architects and Designers can learn a lot from Piet Boon; his attention to detail, his skill at making spaces irresistible when photographed, his ability to converse so effectively with his clients and the timeless comfort of the spaces he creates is more than enough to inspire designers working on any type of project.

The book will be of use not only to architects and contract administrators but also to project managers and employers’ agents.

Despite the fact that he designed no permanent buildings in the United Kingdom more than any other individual he was responsible for shaping British post-war architecture.

Le Corbusier and Britain traces the growing awareness of work by this visionary figure in contemporary architecture journals and the popular press. Contributions by such prominent architects and critics as Edwin Lutyens, Herbert Read, Evelyn Waugh, Peter Smithson, Jane Drew, Basil Spence and Christopher Brooker are accompanied by 150 illustrations, together with writings and drawings by Le Corbusier himself.

Also featuring the most comprehensive bibliography of British writings by and about Le Corbusier ever published, this book is an invaluable addition to the study of architecture.

StructuresEdited by Oscar Riera Ojeda ORO Editions/September 2008 Code 62424/Hardback/192 pages/£24.99

This forthcoming title chronicles recent work from some of the top architects and interior designers in practice today. The dichotomy between inside and outside, public and private, sumptuous and spartan – the diverse and talented group of architects and interior designs featured herein use the three dimensions as their canvas, and in so doing continue to engage, surprise and inspire.

Structures addresses the idea of the architectural skeleton, investigating interior and exterior forms as essential, tensile constructions. What emerges is a sense of the imperative of crafting spaces for human shelter, commerce, entertainment and culture. Designers at once draw on architectural wisdom in arranging room layouts, while transgressing and erasing boundaries. Designed by Oscar Riera Ojeda and featuring the photography of Paul Warchol, Structures provides an essential introduction to the mechanics of building.

25 Theory

Complexity Design Strategy and World ViewEdited by Andrea Gleiniger, Georg Vrachliotis Birkhäuser/June 2008 Code 64512/Paperback/110 pages/£13.90

Digitalisation has transformed the discourse of architecture: that discourse is now defined by a wealth of new terms and concepts that previously either had no meaning, or had different meanings, in the context of architectural theory and design.

When Vitruvius described the architect as a ‘uomo universale’, he gave rise to the architect’s conception of him – or herself as a generalist who shapes a complex reality. The architectural concept of complexity, however, failed to keep pace with industrial and social reality. Against it, architectural modernism set the watchword of simplification: ‘less is more’. In this situation, Robert Venturi reintroduced the notion of complexity into architectural discourse.

Today it is complexity studies, with their starting point in physics, that define the current approach to the concept of complexity. They have established a new connection between the natural sciences and information technology and have thus become a central premise of computer-based approaches to design.

Modern Swedish Design Three Founding TextsEdited by Lucy Creagh, Helena Kåberg, Barbara Miller Lane MOMA/June 2008 Code 64642/Hardback/320 pages/£18.00

Although modern Swedish design has exercised an extraordinary influence on international architecture and interior furnishings since the early twentieth century, some of the crucial generative writings on the subject have not been widely translated, and the movement’s intellectual background is not well known. Modern Swedish Design collects three of Swedish design’s founding texts for the first time in English. In Beauty in the Home (1899), philosopher and critic Ellen Key (1849–1926) promotes simplicity and clarity of purpose with the goal of social reform. Art historian Gregor Paulsson (1889–1977) was instrumental in the spread of ideas such as Key’s; in Better Things for Everyday Life (1919) he contends that design should be true to its time and available to all, and calls for a modern design language reflecting new materials and methods. Finally, acceptera (1931), cowritten by Paulsson and architects featured in the famous Stockholm Exhibition of 1930, engages in a debate between the proponents of handicraft and those of design idioms emerging from industrial mass production.

Lively illustrations and near-facsimiles of the texts’ original publications, scholarly introductions by the editors, and an essay by architectural historian Kenneth Frampton, accompany the translations.

Psycho BuildingsArchitecture By Artists Hayward Publishing/June 2008 Code 64860/Hardback/184 pages/£26.99This new title marks the fortieth anniversary of London’s Hayward gallery – itself an architectural icon, and one of the few remaining examples of the 1960s Brutalist style. The exhibition brings together the work of artists, including Atelier Bow-Wow, Michael Beutler, Los Carpinteros, Gelitin, Mike Nelson, Ernesto Neto, Tobias Putrih, Tomas Saraceno, Do-Ho Suh and Rachel Whiteread, who create habitat-like structures and architectural environments that are mental and perceptual spaces as much as physical ones. The works in this book revisit and reanimate the history of Modernist design while reminding us that built spaces can be defined in social, political, psychological, physical and aesthetic terms.

An invaluable exploration of this contemporary trend, the volume includes essays by Hayward Director Ralph Rugoff, Jane Rendell and Brian Dillon. In addition, each artist profile includes a text by a different author, including Francis McKee, Tumelo Mosaka, Midori Matsui, Brian Dillon, Paulo Herkenhoff, David Greene, Francesco Manacorda, Tom Morton, Miwon Kwon and Iain Sinclair.

Hazards and the Built Environment Attaining Built-in ResilienceEdited by Lee Bosher Taylor and Francis/May 2008 Code 63875/Paperback/382 pages/£35.00

Since the built environment and urban infrastructure provide the core framework for most human activity, it is crucial to develop them with an effective measure of resilience so they can withstand, and adapt to, the threats of natural and human-induced hazards. This book sets out to explore the challenges facing the built environment and examines the strategies that must be taken if built-in resilience is to be realised in the future and built assets safeguarded. The contributors portray a resilient built environment as providing the essential groundwork upon which the technical, organisational, social and economic frameworks so necessary for societal resilience can be founded. This book is essential reading for a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate students, managers and practitioners involved with the way buildings and infrastructure are planned, designed, built, managed and operated.

Urbanisms Working with DoubtSteven Holl Princeton Architectural Press/August 2008 Code 62759/Hardback/176 pages/£25.00

Contemporary urban development is increasingly characterised by a reliance on diagrams to convey the rational, statistical point of view. In his new book Urbanisms, architect Steven Holl suggests that urban planners need to realise that the experiential power of cities cannot be completely rationalised and must be studied subjectively. With a selection of urban and architectural projects from his twenty year practice, Holl stretches urban planning into the domain of uncertainty.

Urbanisms presents design solutions for diverse locations including: The School of Art and Art History at the University of Iowa; Green Urban Laboratory in Nanning, China; Fondation Pinault Ile Seguin in Paris and the Master Plan for M.I.Ts Vassar Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A comprehensive exploration of each project illustrates this much-celebrated and influential architect’s perspective on urban planning.

Contemporary Urban DesignDaab/July 2008 Code 62664/Hardback/384 pages/£29.95

This new series focuses on brand new trends in architecture and interior design. Contemporary Urban Design deals with urban projects all over the world which show outstanding architecture. It discusses urban restructuring, completely new urban projects and the expansion of already existing towns. The text also explores the political and social conditions that surround each project. The projects are presented in alphabetical order of the respective architects and designers. An index with contact information of the designers and architects is also included.

Cities Design & EvolutionStephen Marshall Routledge/July 2008 Code 61239/Paperback/320 pages/£42.50

Cities Design and Evolution offers an engaging and original narrative that interprets planning philosophies from Modernism to New Urbanism, organic theories from Patrick Geddes to Le Corbusier, and evolutionary thinking from Charles Darwin to Richard Dawkins. The book develops a new evolutionary perspective that recognises both the ‘designed’ and ‘organic’ nature of cities, and provides a rationale and impetus for fresh approaches to urban planning and design.

In what is the first book to significantly apply modern evolutionary thinking to urbanism, Cities Design and Evolution promises to stimulate thought, debate and action concerning the nature of cities and future urban planning. The book should appeal to all who are interested in cities, in design and in evolution.

Contemporary Architecture in RussiaSimone Voigt Dom Publishers/August 2008 Code 63978/400 pages/Hardback/£55.65

In the last 15 to 20 years there has been massive growth in the scale of construction in Russia. Economic and political currents have made building such a profitable activity that one cannot speak of a boom only with reference to major cities such as Moscow or St. Petersburg, but in hitherto semi-ignored places such as Kharkov or Vladivostok.

Such rapid architectural developments could never have gone unnoticed elsewhere, and indeed there is growing foreign interest in this venerable nation. Having already shown expert credentials for the analysis of new Russian architecture, DOM Publishers here present over 100 Russian projects by German architectural practices that have successfully taken steps eastward.

The divergent personalities profiled in the book have collectively engineered entirely new ways of seeing, expanding their influence well beyond Japan and into the arts of Asia, Western Europe, and North America. The book is organised around the physical city, and the role of the megalopolis itself as both the site and inspiration for an unprecedented explosion in the visual arts. It features the new work of renowned talents as well as rising stars including artists such as Takashi Murakami, Naoya Hatakeyama and Chiho Aoshima; architects SANAA, Makoto Yokomizo and Atelier Bow-Wow; product and interior designers Nendo, Tokujin Yoshioka and Naoto Fukasawa; filmmakers Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Hirokazu Kore-eda and Studio Ghibli; and fashion designers such as Rei Kawakubo Nigo, Tsumori Chisato, and United Bamboo among many others.

Book reviewNew New Zealand Houses

Patrick Reynolds, John Walsh Godwit/April 2008 Code 64655/272 pages/Hardback/£35.00Architecture in New Zealand is on the up, with major international practices opening offices in the country and the profession experiencing a boom in projects. The demand for one-off houses has especially risen with a variety of clients commissioning their own homes and offering architects the chance to work in the midst of stunning scenery. New New Zealand Houses looks at 25 projects from a number of architectural practices and thoughtfully considers the background to each one, such as the vision behind them and the requirements of the individual clients. Lavish photography illustrates the uniqueness of the houses as well as showcasing the attention to detail and the care that has gone into each individual design. This book will sit well on any coffee table as well as inspiring those dreaming of their own home.

Edited by China Architecture Building Press Birkhäuser/July 2008 Code 65278/Hardback/320 pages/£29.90 Without a doubt the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will not only attract worldwide attention for the sporting contests, but also for the architectural settings and arenas. The exemplary and prestigious stadiums will remain of interest long after the games are over.

Olympic Architecture Beijing 2008 is a comprehensive survey of all the venues for the 29th Olympic Games. It provides detailed insights into the specialised stadium architecture with an abundance of visual material such as bird’s-eye views, illustrations of details, plans/elevations/sections and rendering drawings.

Part One of the volume is an overview written by Ma Guoxin, architectural master and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Part Two gives descriptions of the individual Olympic venues, including 15 newly-built ones (e.g. the Main Olympic Project – Bird’s Nest by Herzog & De Meuron, and the National Aquatics Center – Water Cube by the China Construction Design International (Shenzhen) of CSCEC, PTW Architects, Australia, and Arup Australasia), 14 reconstructed buildings (e.g. Olympic Sports Center Stadium, Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium, Workers’ Stadium) and 6 temporary structures (e.g. Olympic Green Hockey Field, Wukesong Baseball Field).
