Stairs, Ramps and Escalators Inclusive Design Guidance

Ann Alderson RIBA Publishing/April 2010 Code 71557/Paperback/120 pages/£30.00This practical handbook published in conjunction with the Centre for Accessible Environments (CAE) sets out the design and specification principles of steps, stairs, ramps, escalators and moving walks for inclusive environments. These critically important building elements are connected to a large number of accidents and can present significant barriers to access.

Designed to be ‘dipped into’, the handbook outlines the background legislation, regulations and associated best practice guidance. It explains how good practice can mitigate hazards and improve accessibility. Sections on design issues and technical implementation are supported by illustrations and case studies that demonstrate solutions for different situations. Where particular building types have unique requirements covered by separate guidelines, these are highlighted. A final section considers the operational and maintenance issues that need to be addressed.

Concise and clearly explained, this book brings together a wide range of current research for easy reference.

Three ClassicistsBen Pentreath, George Saumarez Smith and Francis TerryBardwell Press/May 2010Code 72319/Paperback/96 pages/£20.00

This catalogue accompanies a major exhibition being held during May 2010 at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London of drawings and work by Ben Pentreath, George Saumarez Smith and Francis Terry.

Each of the Three Classicists has contributed three essays conveying their personal observations on architecture along with beautiful illustrations of their work in sketches, presentation drawings and photographs. The catalogue also includes a foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales, an introduction by the architectural historian Ruth Guilding, and an afterword by Hank Dittmar, Chief Executive of the Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment.

2G N.53 Cecilia PugaPatricio Mardones and Smiljan RadicEditorial Gustavo Gili/May 2010Code 72187/Paperback/143 pages/£28.30

This edition of 2G brings together seventeen of Cecilia Puga’s buildings and projects including the exemplary House in Bahía Azul, in which the classic icon of the section of a house – the outline any child might draw – is manipulated, pivoted and transformed to produce a sense of strangeness in relation to its environment.

With introductory texts by her colleague Smiljan Radic and the Chilean architect and editor Patricio Mardones, and a personal photo album which shows the Chilean vernacular architecture and landscapes that form an inspiration for Puga’s work, this immensely observant and informed publication is to be welcomed by all.

2G Libros Books: Lacton & VassalEditorial Gustavo Gili/April 2010Code 58590/Paperback/156 pages/£27.50

At the beginning of their professional career Lacaton & Vassal were known for their innovative schemes in the realm of single-family housing, through their daring use of materials and technologies which were at odds with the traditional discipline of architectural design. Their work has evolved in the direction of projects of a wider scope which keep faith with their original aims. Their work is not based upon a preoccupation with form. This is not an a priori aim but the outcome of a design process nourished by issues like typological research, the maximising of built surface for a given budget, energy optimisation and adapting to the programme requested by the client. Technological innovation and materials (polycarbonate, industrial greenhouses) are used to ensure the most suitable price, one that allows the biggest possible spaces to be constructed with a forceful, modern image and no concessions to prototypical solutions. This, then, is a singular way of doing things that opens up new horizons for architectural methodology. This book provides an overview of their work from its beginnings to as yet unseen projects, thus leading to a global vision of their career.

Stephan Jaklitsch: Habits, Patterns and AlgorithmsOscar Riera OjedaOro Editions/March 2010Code 65605/Hardback/424 pages/£35.00

The Stephan Jaklitsch studio is based on the idea that architecture is a series of rigorous investigations. Each project is unique and each has its own internal logic and conditions to be explored. This process-based approach becomes a collaborative study with the client in limitations and contingencies inherent in the project, and the process becomes a platform to explore larger themes of materiality, space and light.

This book presents a diverse selection of the studio’s most noteworthy projects and built work. Organised in a rough chronological sequence, the projects range in scale from small interior-oriented retail constructions (most notably the Marc Jacobs fashion stores) and free-standing residential work, which engages the surrounding landscape, to larger urban transformations both built and speculative. Each project is presented with detailed drawings, sketches, models and photographs.

American ModernThomas O’BrienAbrams/March 2010 Code 71480/Hardback/239 pages/£30.00

Designer and merchant, collector and tastemaker, Thomas O’Brien has made a career of translating cool notions of modernism into an easy and generous array of modern styles that anyone can attain. Now he introduces readers to a range of those styles – from casual to formal, vintage to urban – alongside stunning photography and charming design stories.

O’Brien carefully describes the design process of his chosen projects, including a downtown New York City loft, a traditional Connecticut estate, and a converted schoolhouse in eastern Long Island. Each home explores a view on the modern design spectrum he has created, as well as the individual choices that make the design unique and its mix essentially American. He explains not only what was at work to create a given style, but how readers can import those practices to their own homes and personal design sensibilities.

Sustainable School Architecture Design for Elementary and Secondary SchoolsLisa GelfandWiley/April 2010Code 72069/Hardback/323 pages/£55.00

The elementary and secondary school buildings and campuses built today are the schools of the future. Sustainable School Architecture is a guide to the planning, architecture, and design of schools that are healthy, stimulating, and will conserve energy and resources. Written with the needs of architects, construction professionals, educators, and school administration in mind, the book provides a road map for sustainable planning, design, construction, and operations. By its very nature, a school is often the centrepiece of its community and, therefore, well positioned to take the lead in influencing environmental awareness. Building on this point, Sustainable School Architecture shows how eco-friendly practices for school construction can create an environment that young students will emulate and carry into the world. With a practical overview of how sustainability can be achieved in new and existing schools, and how to maintain this momentum in the years ahead, this important book provides architects with detailed guidance for designing healthier learning environments to help usher in a more promising future.

Container Atlas A Practical Guide to Container ArchitectureH. Slawik, J. Bergmann, M. Buchmeier and S. TinneyGestalten/April 2010Code 71794/Hardback/256 pages/£45.00

Container Atlas presents a wide range of contemporary projects along with an in-depth investigation into the background and evolution of this topical field. The book illustrates how containers are being used as building blocks to accommodate the daily lives and special events of urban nomads. Container Atlas explains the historical development of container use in architecture, documents plans, describes associated costs, and suggests concrete solutions for common problems. The book also introduces the various types of containers currently in use today, from standard shipping models to modular pieces made to order out of various materials or with customised cut-outs.

This is a practical and inspirational reference for architects, planners, and cultural activists as well as event and marketing managers, to guide them in deciding what types of containers are best suited to their upcoming projects.

Construction MaterialsTheir Nature and Behaviour, 4th EditionEdited by Peter Domone, John IllstonSpon Press/May 2010Code 72026/Paperback/568 pages/£35.00

So far in the twenty-first century, there have been many developments in our understanding of materials’ behaviour and in their technology and use. This new edition has been expanded to cover recent developments such as the use of glass as a structural material. It also now examines the contribution that material selection makes to sustainable construction practice, considering the availability of raw materials, production, recycling and reuse, which all contribute to the life cycle assessment of structures. As well as being brought up-to-date with current usage and performance standards, each section now also contains an extra chapter on recycling.

Theatre Buildings A Design Guide

Edited by Judith Strong/Association of British TheatreRoutledge/June 2010Code 71899/Hardback/294 pages/£39.99The Association of British Theatre Technicians produced its first guide to the design and planning of theatres in 1972. Revised in 1986, it became the standard reference work for anyone involved in building, refurbishing, or creating a performance space. Theatre Buildings – A Design Guide is its successor.

Written and illustrated by a highly experienced team of international theatre designers and practitioners, it retains the practical approach of the original while extending the scope to take account of the development of new technologies, new forms of presentation, changing expectations, and the economic and social pressures which require every part of the theatre to be as productive as possible. The book takes the reader through the whole process of planning and designing a theatre. It looks in detail at each area of the building: front of house, auditorium, backstage, and administrative offices. It gives specific guidance on sightlines, acoustics, stage engineering, lighting, sound and video, auditorium and stage formats. Aspects such as catering, conference and education use are also covered.

The book contains around 100 high quality full colour images as well as over 60 specially drawn charts and diagrams explaining formats, relationships and technical details.

Biodiversity for Low and Zero Carbon Buildings A Technical Guide for New Build

Dr Carol WilliamsRIBA Publishing/March 2010Code 70194/Paperback/128 pages/£30.00The built environment has the potential to have a major impact on biodiversity, not least with the increasingly demanding requirements to design more energy efficient and airtight buildings, leaving less space for species to inhabit. Up until the publication of this book, there was no one place where all those involved in low and zero carbon buildings could find out about how to incorporate provision for biodiversity within their developments. The author has specially commissioned architects to produce some much needed model designs and practical guidance for the industry and provided a useful summary of all the legislation and regulations relating to biodiversity and sustainable construction in the UK.

Pinpoint: Key Facts + Figures for Sustainable BuildingBruno Keller and Stephan Rutz Birkhäuser/April 2010Code 69001/Paperback/288 pages/£45.00

This manual presents the most important information on all the key aspects of sustainable building in concise and clearly organised form; makes it easy to put it into practice with the help of graphics, tables, and step-by-step instructions; illustrates it with examples; and supplements it with practical tips. That is not to say that Pinpoint is intended to replace a textbook or standards collection. On the contrary, it is meant to help practitioners who already have a grasp of the basics make rational use of their expertise while keeping their focus on the essentials.

LEED Materials: A Resource Guide to Green BuildingAri MeiselPrinceton Architectural Press/May 2010 Code 72120/Paperback/223 pages/£28.00

Taking a focused, material-based approach to sustainable design, LEED Materials: A Resource Guide to Green Building presents almost 200 innovative materials, products, and services, and shows how to use them to achieve the best results. Organised by the CSI MasterFormat Division system for ease of use, the book also takes the reader inside the code for new construction (the broadest code), revealing the pitfalls and bonus moves of using the products for maximum credits (certain products can even be used to achieve several LEED credits in the way the material is applied) and putting that coveted Platinum rating well within reach.

LEED Materials does not focus on the philosophy of building green or the reasons why it’s a good thing. Most people understand why going green is a good thing, but in the end it is the decisions that people make, the products and materials that are applied, that make a difference. This book is the first step toward a healthier, more environmentally sensitive way of building. Steven Winter, former chairman of the U.S. Green Building Council, contributes a foreword.

Timber in RefurbishmentRuth SlavidTRADA/RIBA Publishing/June 2010Code 72722/Paperback/80 pages/£34.00SPECIAL OFFER: RIBA Bookshops is offering £6 off this book (for a limited time only). Now only £34.00 (rrp £40.00)

A combination of recession and new environmental awareness has focused attention on existing building stock. New buildings, while often eye-catching, will only ever represent a relatively small proportion of our total asset. Demolition and replacement can be wasteful activities; in most cases it is more environmentally appropriate to restore, refurbish or extend existing buildings. In some cases, with listed buildings for instance, there may be no alternative.

The reasons for using timber in refurbishment can be summed up in environmental and human terms. The environmental argument is strong, provided that the timber is sustainably sourced. Its association with a recognised level of craftsmanship makes timber seem particularly appropriate in older buildings, and it is also a natural complement to other construction materials. Timber in refurbishment draws on TRADA’s and other specialists’ experience to demonstrate how timber is used to restore historic buildings and refurbish modern buildings. It explains the best ways to realise timber’s benefits in floors, panelling, doors, windows and cladding. Illustrated with some 60 photographs and drawings, this book is a rare combination of imagination, flair and sound technical advice. A selection of case studies, demonstrating the use of timber in refurbishment, feature in the book, including: Ightham Mote, Windsor Castle, ‘Out of the Hat’, Derby Roundhouse and Garden Museum.

The Architecture of Emergence The Evolution of Form in Nature and CivilisationMichael WeinstockWiley/February 2010 Code 65927/Paperback/280 pages/£29.99

This scholarly and radical book expands the conventional worldview by placing human development alongside ecological development: the history of cultural evolution and the production of cities are set in the context of processes and forms of the natural world. The emergence of the human species and the evolution of culture are shown to be closely coupled to the changes in climate and ecology, while it is described how humans have extensively modified the surface of the earth, the ecological systems that exist upon it, and the climate.

The Genius of DesignPenny SparkeQuadrille/October 2009Code 69713/Hardbook/256 pages/£25.00This landmark book takes a unique, original and engrossing approach to design. Whether or not we are consciously interested in it, design is omnipresent; it affects and influences us all in every aspect of our lives. The Genius of Design illuminates what design is, how it works, and how it has shaped the world we live in. Taking a broadly chronological approach, the book shows how the story of design has developed and explores major themes, with chapters including the birth of mass-produced design, domestic design and the contemporary home and the legacy of wartime design. The book shows how design reflects the political, cultural and economic themes of our times, how it connects both to the macro forces of history (industrialisation, consumerism, technology) and the micro forces (taste, money, desire) and how it manifests itself everywhere, from battlefield and boardroom to supermarket and schoolroom.

Sci-fi meets low fi; Risk is a reflection of our troubled times. As the old decays and collapses, our post industrial society embraces the beauty in dereliction, while melding it with the modern and futuristic. In terms of architecture this takes the form of renovating industrial buildings sympathetically, patching with ultra modern repairs that deliberately jar against the original architecture. Look too for bright plastic coatings that redress tired municipal buildings.

Risk is a dystopian fantasy that plays with toxic colour and science fiction references. Here finishes and materials combine rough and smooth, mixing lead crystal with industrial concrete for example. LED light panels move into the domestic setting as science fiction combines with handcraft techniques. The overall effect is unnerving and edgy, perfect for pop up projects or the domestic use of industrial spaces.

12 Landscape 13 Theory

The Houses and Gardens of M. H. Baillie Scott

Ian MacDonald-SmithRizzoli New York/March 2010Code 72107/Hardback/239 pages/£35.00Baillie Scott maintained a characteristically English dedication to the domestic landscape, designing houses and gardens whose exterior forms and interior details were rooted in a romantic vision of vernacular construction and craftsmanship. But his spatial planning signalled a revolution in the organisation of interior space, with the development of the open plan—and the introduction of the demotic, modern living room—around the same time that Frank Lloyd Wright was engaging in similar experiments across the Atlantic.

Photographer Ian MacDonald-Smith has captured 30 of the most characteristically innovative and charming extant houses designed by Baillie Scott, as well as their delightful gardens, in spectacular full-colour photographs taken for this book that express the vibrant craftsmanship and prescient planning of this early 20th century master.

Catching the very first instant of nascent space, Making Architecture shows how very young architects formed at the ETH Zurich are developing their relation to the substance of architecture and unfold it gracefully, concentrating on the embedded, the implicit filigrane or massive potential contained in materials. The publication unveils scale-less creations, fragile architectures, subtle objects, reopening a field thought to be fully explored.

Illustrated History of Landscape DesignChip Sullivan and Elizabeth BoultsWiley/March 2010Code 71066/Paperback/260 pages/£33.99

For thousands of years, people have altered the meaning of space by reshaping nature. As an art form, these architectural landscape creations are stamped with societal imprints unique to their environment and place in time.

This book takes an optical sweep of the iconic landscapes constructed throughout the ages. Organised by century and geographic region, this highly visual reference uses hundreds of masterful pen-and-ink drawings to show how historical context and cultural connections can illuminate today’s design possibilities.

Directing both students and practitioners along a visually stimulating timeline, Illustrated History of Landscape Design is a valuable educational tool as well as an endless source of inspiration.

Awarded Best in Show at the 2009 Chelsea Flower Show for his dynamic blend of Swedish modernism and English romanticism, Ulf Nordfjell is one of the world’s leading contemporary garden designers, and this is the first book in English about his work.

A master when it comes to composing with perennials, grass and bulbs, Nordfjell also has a deep engagement with the surrounding landscape. Materials such as Swedish granite, steel and timber give his gardens structure and a powerful identity, animated by water and light. Every detail of the composition is meticulously worked out, and the gardens reveal new aspects through the seasons.

This book covers 14 gardens, including the 2009 Best in Show and the 2007 Gold Medal gardens at Chelsea. Accompanying Ulf Nordfjell’s thoughtful and lucid text, Jerry Harpur’s superb photographs, taken over several years, represent the gardens in all seasons in both general views and details.

ReviewThe book shows above all that garden architecture is about much more than just plants. Ulf Nordfjell puts the focus upon structure, light, colour and form. Be inspired and enjoy yourself!Elle Interior

Architects have often looked to philosophers and theorists from beyond the discipline for design inspiration or in search of a critical framework for practice. This original series offers quick, clear and accurate introductions to key thinkers who have written about architecture and whose work can yield insights for designers. Each book is by an expert architect-researcher and summarises what a thinker has to offer for architects, locates their architectural thinking in the context of their work, introduces significant texts, helps decode terms and provides quick reference for further reading. If you find theoretical writing on architecture difficult, or simply don’t know where to begin, this series will be indispensable.Series Editor: Adam Sharr, Cardiff University, UK

What makes the world’s top architects tick?

Through discussions with 16 leading architects, including Frank O Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Greg Lynn and Wolf D Prix, unrivalled access is provided to the formative experiences, creative processes and motivations of some of the most influential design figures today. The articles bring us up close to these creative minds with such widely differing positions and opinions, each expressing a very different point of view on aesthetics: whether they think beauty is integral or non-essential to architecture. Most significantly Architecture and Beauty raises poignant issues regarding the place of beauty, aesthetics and self-expression within the psychology and the design process of the architectural avant-garde.

Evolving from graffiti and street art, urban interventions are the next generation of artwork to hit public space. Using any and all of the components that make up urban landscapes, these mostly spatial works bring art to the masses. They turn the street into a studio, laboratory, club, and gallery and challenge us to rediscover our environment and interact with it in new ways. This is the first book to document these very current, personal art projects in a comprehensive way. It shows the growing connections and interplay of this scene with art, architecture, performance, and installation as it turns public spaces into surprising and provoking individual experiences.

Le Corbusier’s masterplan and buildings for Chandigarh, capital of the Indian federal state of Punjab, is a landmark of 20th century architecture and urban planning. The Swiss photographer Ernst Scheidegger, founder member of the Magnum agency and famous for his pictures of the artist Alberto Giacometti, travelled to India and to Chandigarh several times in the 1950s, where he took a large number of photographs of the growing new city, its government buildings and also of the local people and their living conditions. From this material he made a mock-up for a book, Chandigarh 1956, illustrated also with sketches and drawings by Le Corbusier. These equally striking and illuminative photographs are published here for the first time.

This publication aims to spread the work of these architects, while defining the informative and cohesive task of the Col·legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya (COAC, Architects’ Institute of Catalonia).

Book reviewBritain’s Lost Cities A Chronicle of Architectural Destruction

Gavin StampAurum Press/April 2010Code 71851/ Paperback/185 pages/£16.99In his book Dr Gavin Stamp recounts the destruction of so much of our cities, emphasising that rather than the Luftwaffe the real villains were here at home. Many a city’s appeal has been undermined by thoughtless town-planning and a desire to accommodate the motor car, while simultaneously failing to create anything of contemporary merit: a state John Betjeman described as ‘international nothingness’.

There are accounts of fine buildings being bulldozed, whose sites now remain as car parks. While praising the architecture of Newcastle Dr Stamp is unlikely to make friends amongst the female inhabitants, who apparently lack the appeal of their surroundings. The story of Liverpool Customs Hall is depressing: demolished after wartime bomb damage in a bid to lessen unemployment – doesn’t logic dictate that the same hands might have been employed in its rebuilding? The town-planners’ Utopia had a short life: the innovative Quarry Hill estate in Leeds was built to replace late eighteenth century slums but survived only forty years, not even making the half century Pevsner predicted it would take Manchester’s tower blocks to degrade into slum-housing.

This is a sad book, but one that imparts a great deal of understanding about the urban landscape of Britain today.
