BusinessDrever selected to supply CGL#2 furnace at Severstal – ColumbusShortly after the commissioning of the rst galvanizing line at its plant in Columbus (MS) in November of 2007, Severstal chose Drever Interna-tional to furnish an L-shaped annealing furnace for its second CGL.

Focus on Drever’s Water Cooling System (WCS)With its technical and environmental advantages, the WCS developed by Drever International is today’s reference technology for annealing lines used for hot-rolled stainless steel sheet. Studies now being undertaken by the R & D Department will further optimize the system and extend its use to cold rolling.

The furnace is designed to process CS, DS, HSLA and FH material at a maxi-mum production rate of 90 metric tons/hour. The line processes low carbon steel with a thickness range of 0.53 to 2.5 mm and a width range of 900 to 1,850 mm.

The strip enters a vertical Preheat section where it is preheated by the re-cuperative e ect of the hot waste gases owing from the Direct Fired Furnace (DFF) section.

The strip changes passline by moving over two top turn rolls and proceeds downward into the vertical DFF where it is heated with open ame burners in a reducing atmosphere that accomplishes thermochemical cleaning of the strip surface.

The heated product then changes to a horizontal passline and enters in the Radiant Tube Furnace (RTF), the strip is heated to its peak metal temperature by gas red radiant U-tubes arranged above and below the strip.

Waste gases from DFF and RTF are discharged from the building through an exhaust ue and stack equipped with a tubular recuperator for preheating DFF combustion air. A mixing station is also supplied to provide the HNx at-mosphere required by the process.

The strip passes through an electrically heated soak section and into a ve zone Jet Cooling Section where it is cooled down to pot entry temperature.

The product enters an electrically heated equalization section equipped with a two roll hot bridle where strip tension is increased for processing in the

coating section. After passing through the zinc bath, the coated strip is cooled using ltered, outside air in the After Pot Cooling Section.

As the strip passes over two turn rolls mounted to the top of the cooling tower, it is directed into the Final Cooling Section and then into the water quench section equipped with a Quench Tank, Wringer Rolls and a hot air Strip Dryer.

These two new contracts give Drever International the opportunity to fur-ther improve the cooling capabilities of its roller pressure quench equipment, considered today to be among the most sophisticated available.

Thanks to the use of lower pressures in the high intensity section, the Drever quench system attains the required cooling performance while consuming less energy than conventional installations. This provides substantial savings in operating costs.

Improved roller design ensures better uniformity of cooling over the width of the strip.

In the spray lines situated above the metal, an edge masking system limits water consumption to the quantity strictly necessary for the width of plate concerned.

The hot commissioning phase started at MMK at the end of August 2009. In the case of Yingkou, erection commenced at the end of July 2009.

A recognised technology

It was in 2003 that Drever and von Karman Institute developed the WCS for the POSCO HAPL no. 3 Project. The technology has since been sold to nume-rous clients who have incorporated it in their APL’s, including TISCO, TPCO, ZPSS (POSCO), TKAST, BAOSTEEL and THYSSEN KRUPP. 5 lines are now in pro-duction.

Combining many technical and environmental advantages, the Drever WCS has rapidly become an essential component in cooling technology. The mo-del is applicable to all types of lines, including those of large capacity produc-tion.

Technical advantages : • Higher cooling rate than with air cooling giving better mechanical properties• More scale removed in the water cooling technology that makes the further

processes easier • Shorter cooling section length (half of the classic section length)

Environmental advantages : • Much easier to separate scale particles than with classic air cooling techno-

logy (they are directly collected in the water)• Less electrical energy needed to cool the strip (only a quarter of the energy

consumption of a conventional installation (no blowers))• Less noise due to blowers

Objective : performance optimizationAt the moment this water-cooling technology is used for hot rolled strip cooling. Drever International is investigating the use of this technology for cooling cold rolled strip. Some successful tests have been performed on

The concept is based on the integration of the synchronised control of the furnace and production line. The Mathematical Model incorporates thermody-namic physical models, with online calculations of the equipment setpoints, aiming to strictly adhere to the thermal cycles.

Advanced Transition ManagementIn the mathematical model, the transitions are calculated and managed in re-gard to any kind of variations, which are all incorporated into the calculations: width, thickness, heat target, limits, etc. The transition management traces the optimal routes to manage the furnace and the line. Process behaviour is fore-cast in the transition calculation. Operational transparency is achieved through a dedicated HMI interface, Movis ©.

Model Precision

In order to manage severe transitions, the model needs to provide accurate set points. The integrated learning system is very accurate: on steady state, the standard deviation is typically 1.4°C on the target temperature.

Transition management

Data collection from installation sites shows the management of complex situa-tions with strict adherence to the quality limits at the maximum production rate.

Operators’ acceptance

With the mathematical model, new habits have to be taken. The transitions are triggered in advance, in order to cope with the thermal inertia and the line is driven automatically. The model is shown to be used at 99.4% to control the line and the furnace together.

Productivity increase is aimed by the continuing focus on maximum produc-tion rate. A productivity increase of several percent is within arm’s reach.

MMK and Minmetals Yingkou choose Roller Pressure Quench System from Drever Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) and Minmetals Yingkou Medium Plate Co. Ltd. have selected Drever International to install a roller pressure quench system on their austenitising line. Drever has vast experience in the design of this type of equipment, and new technological developments have produced bene ts in terms of performance.

The line processes low carbon steel with a thickness range of 0,25 to 2,5 mm and a width range of 800 to 1.600 mm. The furnace is designed to process galvanized and galvalume coated products at a maximum production rate of 105 tonnes/hour.The line is now operating at full capacity. The annual process capacity is over 370,000 tons.
