It is important to have an education, but it is more impor- tant to use what you have learned and to be able to pass that knowledge on to others as a gift. Our Member of the Month, Tom Lewis, has accomplished just these things. It all started in the summer of 1984 while attending Inkster High School. Tom was asked by a teacher to help him with his lock business. The teacher sustained a disabling injury and needed Tom’s assistance for the summer. This launched Tom’s locksmith career taking him to several corporations, two states, and ownership of his own shop in Plymouth, Michigan. During his tenure that summer, Tom simultaneously worked with his mentor and enrolled in the Locksmith Institute School of New Jersey. The following year he worked with the Heritage Lock & Safe Co. but had to seek other employ- ment when that company dissolved. Unlike our current times in the job market, he quickly found another job with I.D.N. Hardware Sales. This stint was short-lived (only six months) because Karl Hopfner, of Town Locksmith, offered Tom a job. For three and a half years with Karl, Tom gained locksmithing skills and business experience which was a much needed platform for his fu- ture. In 1993 a call came from …………………………………….. BEST MX8 - BEST has introduced a new patented SFIC called MX8. The principal is based on a slider mechanism at the back of the core which correlates to a side milling on the key. Some of the keyways in the product line are backward compatible. No housing (throw pin) modification is neces-sary, thus true interchangeability is maintained.

LOOKING BACK INTO THE LOCKING PAST…RETRO #12 To follow is another page from the now defunct Locksmithing Institute of New Jersey Home Study Locksmithing Course, started by the late Leonard Singer (Master Keying Expert). The program went out of business in the early 1980s. This lesson excerpt on “Duplicating Bit Keys” is circa 1973. Some illus-trious graduates who are LSA members include: Ray Sinai, Theo Schultz, Dan Meggison, Nick Pal-ise, Tom Lewis and William Lynk.

LET’S TALK BUSINESS

The word “serendipity” in the locksmith trade could be defined in a scenario such as this: You have just finished a job and are headed back to your shop or “home base” when you re-ceive a call from one of your biggest clients with an emergency. Your travels, at this particular moment, have put you less than a mile away from them. They excitedly tell you that they are will-ing to pay an extra $200.00 if you can arrive ASAP to open a file cabinet containing important documents that are needed im-

mediately. You arrive there in minutes, stunning the customer, and you immediately open the file cabinet. You actually do charge and collect your normal fee plus the $200.00 bonus. Now, that’s serendipity! Serendipity for me is writing this column every month! In order to gather and pass on more information, I have begun to read more books on business. I feel it has helped me enormously. I want to share a story I just read from the book “Swim with the Sharks (without being eaten alive)”. It is somewhat of an older book, written in the 1980’s by Mr. Harvey Mackay. But by no means are the lessons to be learned old fashioned or outdated! Remember the four-minute mile? People had been trying to achieve it since the days of the ancient Greeks! In fact, folklore has it that the Greeks had lions chase the runners, thinking that would make them run faster. That didn’t work too well. Nothing seemed to work. They decided that it was just impossible, the human body structure, lung capacity, wind resistance -- there were a million reasons. Now comes Roger Bannister. The year after Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile, thirty seven other runners did it. The next year three hundred runners broke the four minute barrier. Did the human body change, no it didn’t. Did the human attitude change, yes, it did! If you believe in yourself, then, there’s nothing you can’t accomplish. So don’t quit. Don’t ever quit. It doesn’t matter if people say you can’t do it. Prove them wrong. Thank You, Mr. Harvey Mackay for this motivational story!

Member of the Month—continued

Continued from page one………….…….H.P.C., Inc. for him to work in Chicago training others. His job was to develop and refine the skills of locksmiths in the use of old and new car-opening tools. A-1 Lock & Key hired him and kept Tom working in Illinois until late 1994. Then, Tom returned to Michigan. He kept in contact with Mr. Hopfner in Plymouth, Michigan and was drawn to become a shop owner himself. Karl was retiring, so Tom bought his Town Locksmith business. Tom felt he was ready to be a mentor of a different kind……that of “Boss.” At that time, he was in his mid 30’s and had come full-circle from working for others to having others work for him. The company now has five full-time locksmiths, each with his own truck. As I ended the interview, Tom was driving home (on a hands-free cell phone!) from a productive day in the business. He arrived home to his wife, Allison, and step-daughter Marie. Tom stated: “I have no funny or amusing work stories since I have been behind the counter since 1994”! I am hoping Tom Lewis can pass along some of his business knowledge to other LSA members in the form of a class. What do you say, Tom?
