Guided by the teachings of Christ, the staff and students strive for high academic standards where all members are encouraged to develop 21st century learning skills and opportunities in order to become adaptable, global citizens who aspire to a life of faith filled service to others. We, the Catholic school community of École/Escuela Father Leo Green, will ensure that all members are treated with dignity and respect as we learn together in the light of Christ. Administrators’ Message Welcome to the 2017 – 2018 school year! The staff of École/Escuela Father Leo Green extends a warm welcome to our new and returning families. We are happy that you have chosen to be a part of this wonderful school community. We look forward to an exciting year of learning and growth. Our district theme for the year, “Rooted in Jesus… Hearts to Love, Hands to Serve” calls on each of us to be the hands of Christ in our school and in our community. In reflecting upon this theme, we are reminded of the words of St. Teresa of Avila. Christ has no body now but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks with compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. We invite our students, our staff and our community to use their beautiful hearts and hands to emulate Christ in all that they do and to see God in one another. We are excited about working with you to ensure we create the best possible learning environment for your children. May God’s blessing be with us all this year. École/Escuela Father Leo Green is a Christ centered community that provides a Catholic learning  environment celebrating the French and Spanish languages and their cultures.

Please ensure that your child arrives at school on time.

Supervision of Students Prior to First Bell Supervision of students begins at 8:10 am. Please do not drop off your children at school prior to that time. Any students arriving prior to 8:10 am. will need to remain outside. Four staff members supervise the bus drop off zone and the school’s playground where all students wait for the 8:29 a.m. bell.  There is no after school supervision as all students are either picked up by parents or board the yellow

bus.

School Building Safety All school doors are locked at all times. Visitors must

ring the bell at the front entrance to be granted access

by the office staff. We kindly ask parents who are

picking up their children to please wait outside their

child’s entrance for pick‐up. It is important that we are

able to easily identify someone who does not belong in

our school building. In addition, we want to ensure instructional time is protected and students are not

distracted by family members standing outside the classroom door. Your cooperation with this would be

greatly appreciated.

Medical Alerts Upon occasion, parents request that staff members administer medication to students who are not

sufficiently mature or reliable enough to care for their own needs. In order to administer medication to

a student, we require a “Request for Administration of Medication/Treatment Form” to be complete

and on file in the office. A copy of this form may be obtained from the school office. It is the parents’

responsibility to keep us informed of medical conditions and correct information regarding treatment

and emergency contact information.

School and Transportation Fees School fees are now due. We encourage parents to pay online through School fees are directed toward consumable items for students, cultural and Co‐Curricular school activities, site licenses for educational applications. Every effort has been made to keep school fees as reasonable as possible.   School fees have been posted to our website.  https://www.ecsd.net/schools/8003/school‐information/Pages/School‐and‐Transportation‐Fees.aspx

Parents will have two options for paying school fees:

1‐ Pay online through the PowerSchool parent portal. 2‐ Pay in person at the school. We accept cash or credit

For the 2017‐ 2018 school year, cheques will no longer be accepted for school fees and school activities.  Bus passes ($32) can be purchased from the main office. Kindergarten bussing is free. Transportation fees can also be paid by logging into PowerSchool on‐line.

Chapters Indigo Adopt‐A‐School From September 18th to October 9th, Indigo, Chapters and Coles employees, customers and their

communities will raise money to help

rejuvenate underfunded elementary‐

school libraries across Canada.

We have signed up for this program again

this year. In the past, we have received

thousands of dollars which has been used

to provide books to our school library. At

École/Escuela Father Leo Green, we have the challenge of providing books (at all levels) in 3 different

languages. If it were not for the help of this program, we would not be able to offer the book selection

that we currently have.

This year, we are extremely excited to announce that we have been by and will be working with the

Chapters bookstore in St. Albert.

It is free to “adopt” us and we also appreciate any donation that you can make.

School Office Hours Our school office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily during school operational days. Parents who call the school after these hours are asked to leave a clear message and we will return your call as soon as we are able.  Please remember that we will be happy to give your child a message at the end of the day. We thank

you for your understanding of our wanting to protect learning time for all students by not interrupting

classes for messages.

Student Entrances All students are asked to use their assigned doors in the morning, at breaks and after school. We ask

that parents wait for their child/children at the door of the school and not the door of the classroom.

Thank you for helping us promote independence and self‐sufficiency in our students.

Class List Construction Each year our teachers put a great deal of time and effort into grouping students based on years of teaching experience. Teachers use both, their academic expertise and years of experience in the area of group dynamics when making up class groupings. Gender, academic needs and ability, behavioral dynamics and special needs are just a few of the many variables considered in constructing class groupings. As such, all parents are asked to respect that there is a lengthy process in which all staff are involved, as they construct class lists that ensure the best possible learning environment within each class for the benefit of all students.  As such, please refrain from requesting class changes. Parents are asked to consider the big picture ‐

that being the importance of demonstrating to our children the need to be flexible, and adaptable and

to learn to work and play in a spirit of cooperation. These skills, we believe are not only important life

skills, but are also fundamental to who and what we stand for as members of a Catholic community.

Registration, FOIP, and Responsible Use Forms Copies of the registration information we have on file have been sent home on Friday, September 8. Parents are asked to check this information over carefully, make any necessary changes, sign and return the forms to your child(ren)’s teacher by Friday, September 15th. Please cross out any incorrect information and provide the correct information visibly and clearly. We also ask that parents of students who are of First Nations, Metis, or Inuit descent identify this on the registration forms. In some cases, this enables us to access additional supports.   It is extremely important that we have accurate information regarding our students in the event of an

emergency. As per the information above, parents of students who are new to our school, as well as

parents of students in grade four, are asked to also complete FOIP forms and Responsible Use

Agreements (for access to school computers) forms. Thank you!

Student Agenda Books Each student in our school must have an agenda book. It is very important that parents read the opening

pages of the book to familiarize themselves with school policies and procedures. Parents are asked to

sign the agenda book to indicate that they have read and understood our school expectations on page 4.

Students are expected to use the book to help plan their class work and homework, and to facilitate

communication between parents and teachers. For all students, the agenda book will also be used to

stamp late admittance. If the book is lost, the student will be required to purchase another as it is crucial

in day to day activities.

Lunch at School All children eat lunch in their classrooms. Eating lunch at school is a privilege

and a convenience for our families. However, it involves the organization and

scheduling of grade six monitors to assist the students, and requires extra

supervision for staff. Therefore, appropriate behaviours on the part of all

students is greatly valued and appreciated. We would like to take this

opportunity to thank the “lunch monitors” and staff who will organize the

monitors and who will provide wonderful service to our community. We ask

that students please bring required eating utensils (forks/spoons) from home

so that we can reduce the amount of plastic waste at our school. Please be sure to pack enough

nutritional food for your child for the entire school day.

Bus Transportation All bus route information can be found by logging into PowerSchool. Routes and times can change

without notice so it is a good idea to check regularly.

Keeping Up‐To‐Date Our newsletters will be published electronically and posted on our school website on the first Monday

of each month. You will be able to read about all the news and activities that are happening at the

school and also have a calendar of events to go to in order to check on up‐coming events. Our school

website is: www.fatherleogreen.ecsd.net

In addition to these newsletters, we will continue to sharing information through the Father Leo Green

Twitter Account.

Safety Drill Practices In general, we will be practicing our fire drills in the Fall and Spring. We will

practice lockdown and shelter in place procedures in the winter months.

There valuable exercises are required so that the staff and students are

aware of what the procedures are should one of these events occur. For

some of these practices, the students will be aware that they will occur.

@FatherLeoGECSD

Other practices will be surprise events. In all cases, the office will make an announcement following the

practice.

Protocol for Parent Concerns – Policy of First Contact Our staff believes that open and collaborative communication is most important in order to maintain a

positive learning environment for our students. Please feel free to contact us to discuss any questions

you might have. Edmonton Catholic Schools recognizes the freedom of all members in the school

community (students, staff, parents, and neighbors) to voice their concerns in an appropriate manner to

the appropriate school personnel. The principle of “first contact” needs to be followed. This means that

the person(s) who have the concern, have the responsibility to begin addressing the concern directly

with those persons with whom they have the concern before taking their concern elsewhere. Parents

who contact school administration prior to speaking with the persons with whom they have a concern

will be directed to that person first. Thank you for your collaboration in this matter. It is working

together that we create an excellent learning environment for our children.

Mass – School Opening and Teaching Mass Faith is an integral part of Catholic Schools. We are

pleased to work with St. Dominic Savio Parish and look

Little Caesar’s Pizza Kits Fundraiser by Father Leo Green School Council

We are once again selling Little Caesar’s pizza kits to raise funds to partially subsidize the cost of field trips for students at FLG. Students may start selling kits on Monday, September 11th using the order form provided. We will accept cash or cheques made payable to Father Leo Green SAC. New this year, there is an online ordering option at http://www.pizzakit.ca/ - click on “Products”, then “Shop”, select “Ship Order to the Group” and enter fundraiser ID #334584. Please note that the order form and payment are due on Wednesday, September 27th. Pizza kit pickup will be held in the school gym on Thursday, October 19th from 12 pm to 5 pm.

Our goal is to sell 750 kits, so we are asking each student to sell 2 kits. When we reach 750 kits the whole school will celebrate with wild hair day and a fun filled hour of playing board games.

The top selling family will receive a family gift basket valued at over $110 (FLG shirts for FLG family members, a bonus pepperoni pizza kit, Toys R Us gift card ($50), board game and admission for all family members to the Halloween dance). The second-place family will receive a family gift basket valued at over $90 (FLG shirts for FLG family members, a bonus pepperoni pizza kit, Toys R Us gift card ($25) and admission for all family members to the Halloween dance). The two top selling families will also receive second row reserved seating at the Christmas or Spring concert.

Students who sell 10 or more kits will be invited to a pizza party (if the family has more than one student at the school and sells 10 or more kits all students from that family will be invited to the pizza party).

The top selling classroom (based on average # of kits sold per # of students in a class) will receive an extra 15 minutes of recess, gym or library. Your class gets to choose!

The classroom(s) who manage to get 100% of their order forms handed in (even if the order forms shows no kits were sold), on or before the deadline of September 27, 2017 will receive an extra 15 minutes of recess, gym or library. Your class gets to choose!

August‐September 2017

Welcome to the 2017‐2018 School Year!  Our theme for this year is Rooted in Jesus…Hearts to Love and Hands to Serve.  This beautiful motif illuminates the mission of Catholic education, to lead our students to come to know that they are members of the Body of Christ who are called to serve one another.  St. Teresa of Ávila, the great mystic and Doctor of the Church, provides us with a beautiful vision of our Christian calling to serve the world: “Christ has no body but yours, no hands, no feet on Earth but yours.” It is empowering for our students to know that they are Jesus’ hands, feet, and heart in the world today.

On August 31, our staff gathered as a community to renew their commitment to Catholic education and to celebrate the Eucharist together.  This special way of beginning each school year declares to all that Christ is the reason for our being, and that he is our model and teacher as we help our children to reach their God‐given potential.

As we fulfill our mission to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another, we have established our District Plan for Continuous Growth (2017‐2020) to guide our work. This year, we begin with a District goal that is grounded in our special foundations and identity as a Catholic jurisdiction, followed by five goals that focus on teaching, learning, and student experiences.  We have also included the measures and targets that we will use to assess our work to add clarity and focus.  I invite you to visit our website to learn more about our goals and the key strategies that we will be implementing to achieve them at https://www.ecsd.net/AboutUs/annual_reports/Pages/District‐Plan‐for‐Continuous‐Growth.aspx .

District Goal  Live and enhance the distinctiveness of Catholic education Goal One  ECSD students are successful Goal Two  The achievement gap between First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students and all other students is   eliminated Goal Three  ECSD is an inclusive school district Goal Four  ECSD has excellent teachers, school and school district leaders  Goal Five   ECSD is well governed and managed

Edmonton Catholic Schools will see unprecedented expansion this year.  We are delighted to be opening 5 new schools this fall and to be re‐opening St. Margaret School to meet the increasing demand for Catholic education in the City of Edmonton. We welcome Bishop David Motiuk, Christ the King, Corpus Christi, Father Michael Mireau, and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Elementary/Junior High Schools to our District.  It is a testament to the amazing Catholic educational experiences that we are providing to families to see flourishing enrolments in our new schools as they open their doors to serve their communities!

Pope Francis offered uplifting words of encouragement to those gathered at his first World Youth Day, and they resonate deeply with our theme.  “If you follow these three ideas (go, do not be afraid, and serve), you will experience that the one who evangelizes is evangelized, the one who transmits the joy of faith receives joy” (July 28, 2013).  This is what we aspire to for our students, that they go fearlessly into the world to serve God and each other, building a better future for all.

I wish everyone an incredible year of learning and growth, deeply rooted in the love of Christ!

Sincerely,  Joan Carr  Superintendent

Happy New School Year

Welcome to the 2017‐2018 School Year.  In the Eastern Catholic Churches (Byzantine Rite) the

liturgical year has a formally designated beginning on September 1st, rather than the first Sunday

of Advent (Roman Rite). What a blessing it is that we are starting a New School Year at the same

time as the Eastern Christians are starting a New Church Year.

We  read  in  St.  Paul's  letter  to  the  Colossians,  “Make  the  best  possible  use  of  your  time”

(Colossians 4:5). The key word in this statement by St. Paul is the word "time." New Testament

writers use two Greek words for time: chronos and kairos.

Chronos time is chronological time, calendar time, time that moves along moment by moment,

day by day, year by year. But kairos time is another kind of time, a special kind of time; time which

is crucial;  time which determines history.  Jesus  lived a  life of kairos  time. He never  ignored a

single moment or opportunity for doing good, for serving, for healing. He used time to the fullest:

teaching, comforting, loving, preaching. Even when He was alone, He spent His time in prayer,

communicating with God as to how best use the time that was left in His life.

The Lord gave us chronos time, calendar time, that we may turn it into kairos time, salvation time,

time filled with opportunities for us to respond to God's gracious invitation to the Kingdom; time

for bearing in our lives the fruit of faith, hope and love.

The principal meaning of the word kairos in the New Testament is: the right time, the ripe time,

the proper time, the opportune time for salvation. It is in this sense that St. Paul uses the word

kairos in the second letter to the Corinthians: "Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now

is the day of salvation" (II Corinthians 6:2).

Because the Church does not want us to lose the kingdom, it takes chronos, calendar time, and

turns it into kairos, salvation time. It does this through the liturgical year which we also call the

church  year  or  the  church  calendar.  Every  day  in  the  liturgical  calendar  is  dedicated  to  the

memory of some event or saint in the history of salvation. The Church has taken the Bible and

placed it, planted it into the chronos or calendar time in order to turn the calendar into the kairos

of our salvation.

So let us live out our salvation by taking the words of the theme for this school year Rooted in

Jesus ... Hearts to Love, Hands to Serve and make them into actions filled with opportunities to

respond to God's gracious invitation to serve and to love Him, our students, and one another.

Have a Blessed 2017‐2018 School Year!

Helping Kids and Youth in Times of Emotional CrisisWe want to make meaningful changes to how kids, youth, and their

families experience going to the ER for mental health concerns.

Talk to ER and Addictions and Mental

Health staff to hear what’s working and

what isn’t.

Understand what the data and literature says about services being provided.

4

To do that, we need to:

Once we have collected all of this information, visual maps will be created that show how

patients, families, and health care staff experience care in the ER.

The maps will be used to identify times in the patient’s journey where changes would make

a big difference.

Emergency SCN & Additions and Mental Health SCN.

3

Hear from kids and youth about what their experiences

have been like.

1

Listen to families share their experiences of

seeking help for their loved ones.

Helping Kids & Youth in Times of Emotional Crisis

What is this about? Across Alberta, more children and youth than ever before are going to the emergency room (ER) when they are experiencing an emotional crisis, often related to substance use or a mental health issue. Alberta Health Services (AHS) is running a research project which has been approved by the Research Ethics Board from the University of Calgary (REB17-0924) to better understand experiences in the ER. We want to hear from you! AHS has created surveys for children, youth, and their families. Two surveys are available:

For individuals who visited the ER between the ages of 15 and 24

For families who have visited the ER with a child between the ages of 7 and 24

Each survey will ask what led to the ER visit, what help you hoped for and received, and what happened when you left. This will help AHS map out a patient’s journey to improve care for children, youth, and their families. Thank you for your time! Addiction and mental health care for children, youth, and their families is a priority for AHS. The survey results will be used to identify opportunities for improvement that, once implemented, will create meaningful change. Do you have questions? We really appreciate your time in helping us understand what people experience when they go to the ER. If you have any questions or would like additional information, please contact Marni at [email protected]
