MY JOB FINDER GETTING ALBERTA HIRED 15

December 14 - 20, 2012

Dear Working Wise:

I keep hearing about a

shortage of labour in Alberta,

but I also know a few people

who are struggling to nd

good jobs, including myself.

Something doesn’t add up

here. Is there really a labour

shortage? Signed Suspicious

Dear Suspicious:

No, Alberta is not facing a severe labour shortage right now—our labour market is nearly balanced with an unemployment rate a little below ve per cent. Most experts consider a ve per cent unemployment rate to be a balanced labour market.

However, Alberta is facing a skills shortage and that is why you might be struggling to nd a job while employers are struggling to nd people.

Benjamin Tal, with CIBC World Markets, released a report at the end of November, called Assessing Labour Market Mismatch, that talks about the current mismatch of available and needed skills.

According to his report, around 30 per cent of businesses can’t nd people with the right skills

A second report, The Haves and Have Nots of Canada’s Labour Market, released in early December, identies 25 high-demand and 20 low-demand occupations. The report is available at: http://research.cibcwm.com/economic_public/download/if_2012-1203.pdf.

As you might expect, the reports found that high-demand occupations not only oer more opportunities for employment, they also found that salaries tend to rise faster in high-demand occupations.

Our current skills shortage is a big problem for Alberta businesses, but it presents a tremendous opportunity to Albertans who are willing to seize the day.

Your rst step should be to research your career options and nd out which of the high-growth occupations interests you.

You could start with Benjamin Tal’s top 25 “have” occupations.

I also recommend that you check out Alberta’s Occupational Demand and Supply Outlook 2011-2021. The outlook predicts the labour demand and supply for more than 500 occupations in Alberta over the next decade.

For example, the outlook forecasts a demand for 15,000 Heavy Duty Mechanics in Alberta by 2021 and a shortage of around 775, leaving a gap of around ve per cent.

The 10-year outlook is similar for Truck Drivers with demand for 51,098 drivers and a shortage of 2,635 drivers.

Once you narrow down your list of potential careers, you can learn more about them, including any required training, through the occupational proles on the Alberta Learning Information Service (ALIS) web site at http://alis.alberta.ca.

Finally, any Albertan who wants help nding a job or help researching a more rewarding career can visit their local Alberta Works Centre. You can nd your nearest Alberta Works Centre at http://humanservices.alberta.ca/oces

Do you have a work-related question? Send your questions to Working Wise, at [email protected]. Charles Strachey is a manager with Alberta Human Services. This column is provided for general information.

Maple

Maple (Animal ID: 56386) is a shy but charming

bunny seeking his forever home. He came into

the shelter with his brothers and sisters when

they were just a month old. Maple loves running

in his exercise pen and playing with empty

boxes. Since he is still a baby, Maple is in the

process of learning which objects are acceptable

to chew, as well as learning to remember to use

his litter box all the time. Maple gets along well

with his siter Jasmine (who has tufts of fur on

top of her head), and the two would do well

together in a single home. Included in the adoption fee:- Spay/Neuter surgery - Microchipping- First set of vaccines- Complimentary post-adoption vet exam- And so much more!
