SYMPOSIA SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

The Agile BAKenneth Howard, Improving Enterprises Business Analysts can play a key role on project teams, but when adopting agile software development it’s often unclear how to best use the skills of a Business Analyst (BA). This session will provide a description of key skills and tools that skillful BA’s often use. These will be aligned with the approach used in typical agile software development methods such as Scrum and Kanban, and best practices for maximizing the value of your BA will be offered.

Learning Objectives:• Understand how to perform the BA role as a member of a

Scrum team

• Learn the 12 Agile principles and how the BA role is best performed to support each of them

• Understand the 4 VARK learning styles and learn strategies for best communicating with other team members in each of these styles

Having Difficult Conversations with your ClientDiane Buckley-Altwies, Core Performance Concepts As a business analyst you have control of the scope of the project. You are critical to ensuring that the project delivers on expectations and that requests that naturally happen during projects are not the cause for scope creep or project delays. In this workshop you will learn how to have those difficult conversations with clients, whether internal or external. Telling a client that they can’t have something and not have them disappointed requires expertise in understanding stakeholders and excellent influencing skills. This workshop takes a hands-on approach to learning the concepts. Lots of exercises and sharing of experiences are key to everyone walking away with some great knowledge and new skills to use in the office.

Learning Objectives:• Identify when client request are out of scope

• Strategize on how best to communicate to stakeholders the bad news

• Deliver the news in a way that everyone understands the situation and can agree to it

Consulting Secrets for Business AnalystsJeffery Davidson, ThoughtWorks There is a difference between a great business analyst and a great consultant. Both ask questions, dig for details, and the very best can make a big difference in the workplace. The question is, what are the differences and can I master them? The answer is, “Yes!” Help dispel the idea that Analysts are just order takers that are only seen as being able to capture good notes during meetings. Good analysts drive out the underlying requirements and value proposition while good consultants can use the same analysis and their influence to shape the opinions and actions of people around them. Come learn how these “soft skills” are used to maximize the beneficial impact while minimizing the divide between Analysis and Consulting. This session will give you practical tips for making an impact that shouldn’t be ignored. If you want to impact your project, team members, stakeholders, and executives, then come to this session. Stop walking into work as an employee and start leading like a consultant!

Learning Objectives:• Explain how consultants learn to use expectation and

perception for managing situations

• Define “soft skill” techniques you can use for making a bigger impact at work

• Quantify your skills to make you more marketable

Connect! The Art And Science Of Connecting With People, Staying Connected And Managing Those Connections To Better Yourself And Others!

David Barrett, Solutions Network This presentation could easily be called Relationship Portfolio Management – the art and science of managing our relationships. As we manage our financial portfolios, so too might we manage our portfolio of relationships. Your portfolio of relationships consists of relationships with people: professional and personal, simple acquaintances and true sole mates, buddies from school and friends from church, your child’s friends and your best friend’s friends, your family, your boss and employees, your clients and your suppliers. Managing this portfolio is all about how you manage these relationships: how you connect with them and manage them. And it is about making something of these connections: leveraging them to create something new in your life or in other’s lives – to the benefit (financial or otherwise) of yourself or others.

Learning Objectives:• How to create and manage relationships in your job and your

Life

• How to make your ‘Portfolio of Relationships’ work for you

• How to build your network to succeed in business and in life

The Role Of The Business Analyst In The Development Of Automated Acceptance Tests As Living Documentation

Dan Beauchamp, Southwest Airlines The emergence of Domain Specific Languages as a means of writing automated acceptance tests readable by the business presents us an invaluable opportunity. If properly crafted, organized, and shared, these automated acceptance tests can serve as a single source of true living documentation – accessible, comprehensible, and accepted by both technology and business teams. This simple technology has the potential to improve communication and clarity not only by providing a common source of truth, but also by eliminating our dependence on static requirements documents and manual tests whose accuracy can never be entirely trusted. Unlike Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, and Wiki pages, these living tests confidently describe precisely what the system is doing now and why, while at the same time providing a common language for stating how it should change, and where. As expert liason between the business and the technology teams, the Business Analyst is uniquely suited to guide this elevation of mere automated tests to successful living documentation. Success requires a delicate balance between comprehensive and concise, the ability to comprehend both big picture and fine detail, and most of all an ability to understand and reconcile both business and technical needs. This presentation will focus on principles involved in writing such living documentation, emphasizing why the Business Analyst is crucial to its success, and sharing tips, pitfalls and challenges to overcome.

Learning Objectives:• Envision the true potential of automated acceptance tests as a

repository of living documentation shared equally by Business and Technology teams

• Understand why the Business Analyst role is absolutely crucial to the success of this vision

• Overview tools, keys to writing successful living documentation, pitfalls to avoid, and discuss how to overcome some inherent challenges and limitations

And most of us are exceptionally adept at managing the day-to-day incremental adaptations that move our careers and our organizations forward month after month, year after year. But when significant transformation is needed, the game suddenly changes. The standard models of organizational change break down and no longer produce the results we expect.
