The mystic land of lofty hills wrapped in milky white snow, rolling green meadows adorned by stately pines and ferns with occasional apple orchards and strawberry farms and orchid and rhododendron decked valleys personify Jammuand Kashmir. While no hyperbole can expound the state's natural beauty, Jammu and Kashmir Literacy however is a matter of grave concern of the government.

The beauty and tranquility that is characteristic of Jammu and Kashmir is currently being disturbed by the insurgency operations of the militants. As adverse fallout of this, Jammu and Kashmireducation is being severely hampered.

According to the indices listed in the 2001 Census Report, the net literacy rate in the state is around 54.46%. The men lead the literacy figures with a commendable 65.75% literacy rate while the female follow at 41.82%.

The average rural literacy rate of Jammu and Kashmir is 48.22% while the urban literacy rate marks an exemplary figure of 71.27%. In order to promote,Jammu and Kashmir literacy, the state has come up with as many as 15000

schools and 41 colleges and 5 universities that foster higher education.

The Jammu and Kashmir government is facing the challenge of widespread proliferation of education in the state. Nearly 2000 literacy centers have been established in t he various villages of Azad Kashmir. The government is hoping to

change the fate of the country by eradicating illiteracy and facilitating higher education.
