Thank you to Miss Wiseman, Mrs Hynes and Mrs Blumer who provide our students with such memorable opportunities in the areas of choir and dance. They certainly presented very well and were outstanding ambassadors for our school. And please make the time to view the static displays of student work which are on display for this week at Erina Fair and are situated outside of Go Lo. Thank you to Renee Harbach for assisting with supervision for the time our work is on display and Miss Whitty and Miss Sammut for coordinating the Chertsey students’ work. Again, thank you to Leanne Rijff and her son Dylan, for providing a face painting service to the pre -schoolers who attended our Erina Fair promotion with their parents. All in all it was a fantastic promotion for our local public schools. Please try to visit our school this Thursday, 2 nd August. The Chertsey staff have issued an open invitation to our school community to visit our great school for Open Day and Book Fair. It is a wonderful way for our families to come together and celebrate the many tremendous things that happen at Chertsey. As you can see by the flyer, our staff have been busy organising activities for this special day held to celebrate Education Week at Chertsey Primary School. Activities planned include the Scholastic Book Fair and performances from our Choir and Dance Group and students from Erina High School’s music faculty.

EDUCATION WEEK CELEBRATIONS

As is clearly evident from the photographs in this edition of the newsletter our Chertsey school community can be very proud of our students who represented the Erina Learning Community yesterday at Erina Fair for the launch of Education Week. Our public schools brilliantly showcased the tremendous talent at our local schools with our own dance group and school choir doing us proud. Thank you to Miss Wiseman, Mrs Hynes and Mrs Blumer who provide our students with such memorable opportunities in the areas of choir and dance. Also very impressive were the students who hosted this event. Well done to Aithne and Khalid who were selected to be hosts for the performances and guests and did so well in what can be a daunting role. Please try to visit our school this Thursday, 2nd August.

And remember, if you are able to donate a book from the Book Fair to our library, it will benefit students for many years to come. I appreciate the work that our teacher/librarian, Mr Twyman has done in the lead-up to promote the Book Fair. Thank you to Miss Sewell for once again putting together a great program of events which will promote our school so well across the school and wider communities. We look forward to seeing a large number of families at school to help students and staff celebrate Education Week 2012. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND COMMUNITIES APPRECIATION AWARDS Congratulations to Mrs Gail Palmer and Mrs Julie Eather our DEC Appreciation Awards winners for 2012. Mrs Palmer is a long time classroom teacher at Chertsey Primary School & Mrs Eather is a long time volunteer helper at the school. C BLOCK REBUILD Last Monday I met with our Department of Education and Communities and Public Works representatives to discuss the plans and time-frame for the rebuild of C Block which was extensively damaged after the fire in April. As is now clearly evident, the building remediation of hazards has finally been completed during the last school holidays and it is now ready for building works to commence. I have been assured that the new classrooms will be refitted with materials to a contemporary level putting them on par with our newest home-base block of classrooms (K Block). This will include wall linings with sound insulation and display properties and wiring to accommodate a wireless hub along with brand new furnishings. Once the tendering process is completed in the next 3-4 weeks, I expect work to commence soon after. Given that this was one of the school’s original blocks, built over 40 years ago we should see a significant change in the internal fittings once the rebuild is completed. Although it will have been a lengthy wait for the students and teachers in classes K/1H and K-6 JV to get back to their classrooms I know they will appreciate the new features of these rooms. PORTRAIT FUNDRAISER If you have been considering a family portrait I urge you to consider the P&C Fundraiser which is coming up soon on Saturday August 11th at Chertseydale Cottage with local photographer and Chertsey parent, Gary Champion. Please see the flyer in this newsletter for more information. I saw some of the portraits from a similar fundraiser last year and can highly recommend the quality of Gary’s work. And whilst having a lifetime memory captured it is good to know that you are supporting our P&C which in turn supports your children. STUDENT FUNDRAISING FOR WORLD VISION Well done to Hope of 5/6W, who has decided to support the World Vision 40 Hour Famine this year. Donations for this worthy cause to support children in third world countries can be made by accessing her special 40 hr famine website: http://40hf.com/hoperendall. SUNSAFE and PROUD HAT DRAW This week our Sunsafe and Proud Hat draw winner is Anton of 2S. He wins a slushy from the school canteen. I thank Mrs Dyer and our P&C for supporting this student welfare program. Please ensure your child has a school hat with their name marked clearly on the inside to be eligible to win the slushy . I am extremely proud of how smart the students look in FULL school uniform. Let’s keep it up! John Anderson

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL RIBBONS Just a reminder that ribbons from our Athletics Carnival at Mingara late last term will be handed out at a K-6 Assembly once the field events have been completed. Unfortunately the weather has not been kind to us and we still have several field events to run. We are hoping to hold a half-day carnival this Friday to complete these as long as the oval is not too soggy. I will announce on morning assembly when ribbons will be handed out and I will also include a notice in the newsletter so watch this space! The Brisbane Water PSSA District Athletics Carnival will be held Thursday and Friday of Week 6 (23rd & 24th August) at Mingara Athletics Centre. Athletics representatives will receive a note about this in the next week and field reps will receive one as soon as possible following the completion of their events. Transport to and the venue will be by private arrangement. Miss Wiseman (Carnival Co-ordinator) CHOIR and DANCE GROUP NEWS On Monday, our choir and dance group performed at ‘The Hive’, Erina Fair to celebrate Education Week in the Erina Learning Community. Many schools from our local community also showcased the talents of their students as we promoted public education. The standard of performances was extremely high and our students were certainly no exception to this. They are to be congratulated on not only their wonderful singing and dancing, but also their behaviour. Our students were a wonderful reflection of the high standards we expect here at Chertsey and they should be very proud of themselves. Well done! If you missed their performance, the dance group and choir will both be on show again this Thursday at our Education Week Assembly. We hope to see you there! Mrs Hynes, Mrs Blumer and Miss Wiseman (Dance Group/Choir Co-ordinators) STAGE 3 “ACTIVE EDUCATION” PD/H/PE EXCURSION The major excursion for Stage 3 students is organised for Week 10 of this term (Wednesday 19th to Friday 21st September). This sport and recreation camp is run by “Active Education” at their Gosford Centre, Somersby. The cost for this three day/two night excursion is $250 per student. Student assistance is available to those families experiencing financial hardship. Just a reminder that the $50 final payment is due by Friday 17th May (Term 3, Week 5). ***ALL PAYMENTS FOR THIS EXCURSION MUST BE FINALISED BY THE END OF WEEK 5*** Last Tuesday, an Active Education staff member (‘Pom Pom’) came to Chertsey and told us a little more about the program and facility. The students were very excited by the activities on offer! It was a great opportunity for students, parents and staff to ask questions and we appreciate his visit. Stage 3 Teachers

TRIVIA NIGHT (repeat)

Book your table Our Trivia Night committee is currently organising the P&C’s major fundraiser for 2012, which will be held in the evening of Friday 19th October in the school hall. The cost is just $10.00 per person (8-10 people per table), so get some friends together and put on your thinking caps for an awesome night. With Troy Henderson and Ross Nicol as your hosts there promises to be a great deal of fun and laughs. The theme will be “Music Across the Ages.” There will also be lots of prizes to be won, including “Best costume” and “Best Table” and don’t forget to bring lots of gold coins for mini games! BYO beverages, nibbles and brains trust! Donations for our prize pool will be gratefully accepted.
